How AFCON 2019 could affect Liverpool’s start to the new season

Liverpool could be without two of their most important attacking players for most of their pre-season campaign.

Both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané have been selected for the Egypt and Senegal squads respectively at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

It gets underway in less than a week from now, on Friday June 21, and lasts well into July.

The final takes place on July 19, eight days after Liverpool start their pre-season friendlies on July 11.

The quarter-finals last from July 10 to July 11, while both semi-finals are scheduled for July 14.

Crucially, hosts Egypt and Senegal top the betting odds as the outright winner of the competition.

So it seems, even at this early stage, that both Salah and Mané could still be on international duty less than a month before the 2019/20 Premier League campaign kicks off.

If either or both of them make it to at least the quarter-finals, they would definitely miss Liverpool’s trips to Tranmere and Bradford on July 11 and 14.

They would also likely be absent for a meeting with Borussia Dortmund in Indiana (USA) on July 19 as it takes place on the same day that AFCON 2019 reaches its conclusion.

Salah could be missing from much of Liverpool’s pre-season campaign

International players are typically given a few weeks of leave after major tournaments, delaying their return to pre-season with their clubs.

It would, therefore, be likely that Salah and Mané would miss the entirety of Liverpool’s tour of USA if they make it to the closing stages of AFCON 2019.

After playing Borussia Dortmund, the Reds face Sevilla in Boston on July 21 before Sporting are their opponents in New York on July 24.

Liverpool’s full pre-season fixture list can currently be found on our Pre-Season page.

It is entirely possible that the first club match either Salah or Mané become involved in, if they go far at AFCON 2019, could be the Community Shield final against Manchester City on August 4.

That’s why we’ll be tracking all the Premier League assets that are competing in Egypt over the next month or so.

Here is a list of them, sorted by clubs.

Arsenal

  • Mohamed Elneny (Egypt)
  • Alex Iwobi (Nigeria)

Aston Villa

  • Ahmed El Mohamady (Egypt)
  • Jonathan Kodjia (Ivory Coast)

Brighton and Hove Albion

  • Leon Balogun (Nigeria)
  • Gaëtan Bong (Cameroon)
  • Yves Bissouma (Mali) – pulled out with injury

Crystal Palace

  • Cheikhou Kouyaté (Senegal)
  • Jordan Ayew (Ghana)
  • Wilfried Zaha (Ivory Coast)

Everton

  • Idrissa Gueye (Senegal)

Leicester City

  • Admiral Muskwe (Zimbabwe)
  • Wilfred Ndidi (Nigeria)
  • Kelechi Iheanacho (Nigeria)

Liverpool

  • Naby Keita (Guinea)
  • Sadio Mané (Senegal)
  • Mohamed Salah (Egypt)

Manchester City

  • Riyad Mahrez (Algeria)

Newcastle United

  • Christian Atsu (Ghana)

Southampton

  • Moussa Djenepo (Mali)

Tottenham Hotspur

  • Serge Aurier (Ivory Coast)
  • Victor Wanyama (Kenya)

West Ham United

  • Arthur Masuaku (DR Congo)

Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Romain Saïss (Morocco)

Thankfully, no Premier League side has more than three players present at the tournament – so the disruption should not be on the same scale that the 2018 World Cup caused.

Liverpool are one of the clubs to have a trio in Egypt, Guinea’s Naby Keita also set to participate in the tournament.

However, his country is not expected to go as far as Egypt or Senegal – plus Jurgen Klopp has more cover for him in central midfield.

Crystal Palace might also be a little concerned about their players at the tournament.

Wilfried Zaha will be heading to Egypt with the Ivory Coast, and he’ll fancy his chances of taking them to at least the last eight.

The Eagles begin their pre-season campaign on July 9 with a trip to Swiss club Luzern.

They then face Young Boys on July 13 and Nottingham Forest on July 19. Find out the rest of Palace’s pre-season matches HERE.

If Senegal do go far with Mané at the helm, it would also mean an extended leave of absence for Zaha’s colleague Cheikhou Kouyaté.

Ghana striker Jordan Ayew could also be at risk of missing pre-season matches for Palace.

Serge Aurier is in the Ivory Coast squad for AFCON 2019

Meanwhile, if Zaha does fire Ivory Coast into a serious bid for the AFCON title, that would see compatriot Serge Aurier missing much of Spurs’ pre-season campaign.

That could be good news for those looking at Kieran Trippier, as Aurier’s absence would certainly boost his chances of a start for Gameweek 1 – although Kyle Walker-Peters will likely still pose a threat.

The same goes for Raheem Sterling hopefuls, as Riyad Mahrez arriving at pre-season late for Manchester City could see the Englishman face less competition in the early stages of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

AFCON 2019 could also affect the clean sheet potential for some teams.

Idrissa Gueye‘s role with Senegal could see him miss a large chunk of Everton’s pre-season campaign ahead of some favourable fixtures in the early FPL Gameweeks.

He is a vital part of the Toffees’ squad and he was one of the reasons why they were so defensively solid at the back-end of 2018/19.

Fantasy managers considering the likes of Jordan Pickford, Lucas Digne or Seamus Coleman for Gameweek 1 might have to track Gueye’s role in pre-season over the summer.

So in summary that whole article, is Mane/Salah could miss all of preseason.
    Maybe.
But it failed to mention that they would be more match fit than those who just played preseason as they would have played competitive games.
    Bit of a non-story.

Yeah but they still need a break. They will be given time off whilst everyone is training so might not be match fit for GW1. Personally I think they'll be ready though

The community shield is a real help here. Its a bit more competitive than the usual pre season friendlies so strong sides tend to be fielded. If Mane or Salah play in this then we can be pretty sure they're fine for GW1.

and if they don't play in that game but then play GW1? 😀 refreshing Liverpool twitter before GW1 is going to be fun, fake lineups everywhere too probably

If they don't play in the shield then I'd probably still go for one of them in my squad, however the captaincy may switch to someone else. But you're right of course that paying attention to the presser will also be essential.

Yep, hard to think they'll start in gw1 if not involved the charity shield. The tricky decision will be if they are on the bench, although guess i'll get whichever one in for week 1 so at least they're in, can still get points off the bench.

People always overthink these things. Unless they are injured there isn't a chance in hell that Liverpool will start the season without two of their most important players, their main goal scorers.

Of ALL the places Liverpool could get a backup goalkeeper, guess where they decide to go? We gave you VanDijk to last the century without more player from us. Alex isn't even going to get a game, you're just buying him to add to the agenda that we're your feeder club or something. Come on now.

Form much more temporary than class though - he’s one of the most gifted CM’s in the world, ridiculously marketable, the right age...

It’s a shame that like Ronaldo, Utd will almost certainly miss out on his best years (even though he already has a better minutes per G/A than both Lampard & Gerrard from an FPL perspective)

But I’d be genuinely shocked if they didn’t make a profit - PSG, Bayern, Real possibly Barca, Juve - many blue chip clubs likely interested & may decide to overlook Raoila & back themselves to bypass/improve his questionable mentality

I agree. He managed to garner 180 points and only missed 3 PL games last season. Would easily have reached the 200 mark had he player every game. Thats great value when starting at £8.0m. The talisman at Utd.

Yep he was way underpriced because of the hamstring injury that kept him out for 10 games the prior season - he also missed three pens this season - that’s a -6 instead of a +15 so somewhere in the region of 15-20 points with baps...

Easily a 10.0 in FPL if he stays - if you could time him right he’d comfortably justify it too

It wasn’t exactly a flash in the pan though it was an 11 game spell in fairness - almost a third of a season where he was basically unplayable

And in the 6 games prior to that MouMou and him were at each other’s throats & he was hauled off early in one/didn’t start the other 4... then he had 6 attacking returns in the 11 games prior to those...

Where things went south imo was the 94th minute home to Southampton - if he’d scored that penalty who knows

But he’s a piece of work, no doubt, him & Raoila are perfect for each other, two fairly dislikeable characters

18 was his max last season so in fairness very unlikely considering in his own opinion that was his best ever season.
More likely to get three 2's although his average for the season was 5.1 but that was boosted by that 8/9 match purple patch.

The three missed pens were a 21 point swing before baps... he’s demonstrated ability to score 15 or more points in a game on 4 occasions this season (including the 18 pointer as you rightly say)

I wouldn’t interpret the comment literally - but on his day he could score 20 points in a single game

He was seriously underpriced and will get a massive rise if he stays is probably the overall point - and has the ability to easily justify the price rise *if* you can time him right as pointed out above

And he’s also a piece of work as pointed out elsewhere, him and that scumbag agent

"he already has a better minutes per G/A than both Lampard & Gerrard from an FPL perspective"

What do you mean already? Minutes per G/A almost always drops as the number of games grows larger..? So even without considering the various positions played by all three players it's hardly fair to compare Pogba to both of them when they've played so many more games than him...

“Minutes per G/A almost always drops as the number of games grows larger..?”

No unfortunately this statement is not true if a player improves and become more prolific as they progress through their career (Gerrard & Lampard both did)

Look at Lampards first 6 seasons and then look at the following 10 seasons - they were his most prolific and brought his average up

Same with Gerrard - his final 3 seasons were his most prolific again bringing his average up, not down

Despite that, and despite Pogba not yet reaching his prime (we assume) his numbers to date still better Lamps/Gerrard by quite some distance (~150 mins per G/A Pogba vs. 170 Lamps & 190 Gerrard IIRC)

If you did an adjusted minutes per G/A for the two lads (two of the best FPL players in history) at Pogba’s age - the gap would be even greater

**When I say Lamps & Gerrard averages were brought “up” by their more prolific seasons as their careers wore on - I mean the numbers “improved” which is actually “down” when I taken literally - but you get my point

After Lamps first 4 - 6 seasons his minutes per G/A was much higher than Pogba’s, and also much higher han Lampards own final minutes per G/A, which benefitted from his profligacy seasons later in his career - it’s not a topic very conducive to easy written discussion due to the havoc uni te tionally saying “up” instead of “down” can cause to a literal interpretation - but you catch my drift hopefully

                Maybe easier to illustrate:

                Lamps 176G, 109A, 48909 mins, 172 mins per GA

                Gerrard 121G, 96A, 41159 mins,190 mins per GA

                Pogba 24G, 27A, 7760 mins, 152 mins per GA

Give Pogba the same amount of minutes as Lamps/Gerrard and he’d be right up there, if not exceeding them... and vice versa, take Stevie G/Lampards 7760 mins from 23-26 & they’d be lagging Pogba

Yeah understood, when I said mins per G/A "drops" what I meant was rises/ gets worse. Fair point about both of them being more prolific as they went on, my bad. But aren't these exceptions rather than the rule? Genuinely don't know but that's what I figured intuitively..

Regardless of that though, since it's an assumption that Pogba hasn't peaked in terms of mins per G/A, my point was that it isn't fair to compare around 100 (?) Pogba games to 500+ each of Lampard and Gerrard... might as well wait and see how his career pans out and assess afterwards rather than base these comparisons on forecasts of what he may or may not achieve.

Yes on both fronts - lamps and Gerrard are outliers in a hugely positive way that is difficult for most players to get near, yet Pogba exceeds them

And yes in terms of the fairness of comparison - thats why we use average as it normalises the comparison for the vastly increased minutes Lamps & Gerrard were able to score G& A over compared to Pogba

On straight G & A he’s obviously light years behind them as he’s only played three seasons - but in those 3 seasons he’s smashed their records out of the park by some considerable distance

It’s an uncomfortable truth that doesn’t sit well with many who watch Pogba lethargically stroll around that he is up there statistically (to say the least) with the best attacking mids to ever be available in FPL

Not in denial at all about his record so far, it's world class. But for me, longevity is a massive part of what made those guys two of the best ever so I prefer to wait and see how "permanent" Pogba's class is rather than use the avg to normalise the comparison

Yet what better way to illustrate just how prolific he is than to compare him with greats? And when he’s actually exceeding he greats... it’s a powerful message

Utd got a ridiculous amount of pens this season 12 - the most in the league, with palace second getting 11

Taking penalties is definitely one of the big reasons why Lamps, Gerrard & Pogba were/are so deadly from an FPL perspective

The scary thing is Pogba missed three of those pens which got him a 6 point deduction... had he scored them that would have been plus another 15 points (before baps), around a 20 point swing boosting him over the 200 point mark (!) at 8.5 & from central mid he was seriously underpriced from an FPL perspective & if (big if now) he stays he surely gets a huge price hike - likely to double figures/10.0+

                        Whatiffery.

Pogba is a little rubbish at spot kicks - there’s no way of adding notional points for if he had scored.

An alternative view is to look at the proportion of his points that come from pens. I haven’t looked it up but I’m willing to bet it exceeds Lampard for one.

Could he lose pens to Rashford? Probably not given ego but there’d be a fair footballing case to be made.

It’s certainly whatifferry until we see the prices for sure, but if I was a betting man I’d say 10.0 or possibly 10.5 (if he stays of course). I think 9.5 might be a little low and 11.0 too high

I suppose what’s not whatiffery is him statistically outperforming Lamps & Gerrard on minutes per goals & assist which is a frightening thought

Lampard and Gerrard were both one-club-for-life players who would give their all for their club.
Pogba by contrast is a mercenary gives the impression that he can't wait to get away (or is that just his agent?).

His form since his purple patch ended has been terrible FPL-wise - (-1)-1-2-2-15-2-2-2-2-1.
And his FPL returns against big six opposition last season were no better - only 18 points from 8 matches.
HIs first 9 matches under OGS only included one against big six opposition, and his double-figure returns during this period were all against weak defences - Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth and Fulham.

Perhaps he needs better players such as French internationals around him and to be loved more or to have a different function in the team in order to produce his best,
But he needs to produce his best form over a far longer period and to be able to turn it on against strong as well as weak opposition before he deserves to be compared with those two Premier League greats.

He polarises opinion and people get very emotional when discussing him, he does himself no favours with his attitude and entourage, and given the choice no one in their right mind would choose him over a Lampard or a Gerrard for an actual football team.

But statistically his record holds water with the best of them - from an FPL perspective he was dramatically under priced and will get a huge hike if he’s still there next year, and will easily justify it if/when he plays to his abilities

The stereotype of Lampard being a one club man is also something I find fascinating - he was born & reared at West Ham & their fans turned on him when he went to Chelsea for what was big money back then. He also played for chelsea’s Huge rivals Man City.

Similarly Stevie G had Liverpool fans literally burning effigies of him outside his family home after he agreed to sign for Chelsea

But they were true greats of the game and a joy to watch - the fact that Pogba is currently exceeding their minutes per GA after 3 seasons, 2 & a half of which were under MouMou is scary

OK, I stand corrected about Lampard being a one-club Chelsea man - but he did stay there for 13 years.
Stevie G was briefly tempted to leave Liverpool before thinking better of it, but he did stay there for 17 seasons before retiring to the MLS.
It's a bit difficult to imagine Pogba having that sort of longevity with United, but you never know, he just might surprise us.

Pogba was 23 when he returned to United in 2017 after 4 years at Juventus, the same age as Lampard was when he joined Chelsea.
He's made a good start but shows signs of being streaky or a flat-track bully - so all he has to do now is to become more consistent, produce more in the bigger games and keep it up for another ten years!

Yeah I’d be shocked if Pogba had that length of tenure at any club...

The funny thing is though that he could actually afford to regress significantly for the next 10 years and still come out statistically better than Lamps/Stevie G - were he to even just maintain his average of the last 3 seasons he’d exceed them... were he to maintain this season’s averages he’d be posting records.... but I’m not a fan of him personally.

I dislike the mercenary aspect, in the same way that Stevie G actually handed in a transfer request to try to force liverpool’s hand (who could forget the ironic “he kisses the badge on his chest, hands in atransfer request” chants!), Pogba hasn’t yet done that, but he looks like he’s not far off it

Who knows, maybe the Utd fans will do what Liverpool fans did to help Stevie “change his mind” and start burning his shirt outside his house and carrington!

To be honest, most would be glad to see the back of him from a footballing perspective, as good as his FPL record is

Nice effort but you know it doesn't make sense to draw parallels here. He was there all his life and was obviously tempted when that opportunity initially arose in 2004, like any player would've been under the circumstances. Despite all the statements he's made since then we can't be sure why the move didn't materialise at the time, just that it didn't..

You're talking about what could have happened not what actually did, so what is he then, a hypothetical mercenary?

The way you talk about the effigies and shirts makes it sound like mass riots 😆 of course there was anger and disbelief what else would you expect, it was right after Istanbul and it was Chelsea!

Maybe guilt tripping Pogba like that would've been an option for United fans if it had been his hometown club and he'd just won them the CL 😉

Hmmm... I’m just stating facts really, he handed in a formal documented transfer request to the club, fans burned his shirt in public, and he backtracked and stayed - we could potentially see similar scenes with Pogba - but he hasn’t yet formally handed in a transfer request... it may come soon though, who knows...

                        According to Wikipedia,
"Houllier resigned as Liverpool manager after a trophyless 2003–04 campaign, and Gerrard was linked with a move to Chelsea during the off-season. He admitted he was not "happy with the progress Liverpool has made", and that "for the first time in my career I've thought about the possibility of moving on."[32] In the end, Gerrard turned down a £20 million offer from Chelsea to stay with Liverpool and new coach Rafael Benítez.[33]" and
"In regards to his contract issues with Liverpool, Gerrard told the press after the final, "How can I leave after a night like this?"[44] but negotiations soon stalled and on 5 July 2005, after Liverpool turned down another lucrative offer from Chelsea, Gerrard's agent Struan Marshall informed Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry that Gerrard was rejecting a club-record £100,000-a-week offer. Parry conceded the club had lost Gerrard, saying, "Now we have to move on. We have done our best, but he has made it clear he wants to go and I think it looks pretty final."[45] The next day, Gerrard signed a new four-year deal as Parry blamed the earlier breakdown of talks on miscommunication between the two sides. Gerrard stated upon signing the contract that he would rather win one Premier League medal than win multiple titles at Chelsea as it would mean more to him.[46][47]"

Fans did protest strongly against his going, but it sounds to me very much like another case of exaggeration by his agent, who was probably more enthusiastic about the move than Stevie G was himself, especially after he had had a bit more time to reconsider how much the club and its fans meant to him.

Yeah obviously we can’t say for sure why Gerrard did what he did - but equally we can’t dispute the facts that he handed in a formal documented transfer request to the club, that fans burned his shirt in public, and tha he backtracked and stayed?

As I say, we could potentially see similar scenes with Pogba - but I don’t see it personally - he hasn’t yet formally handed in a transfer request... it may come soon though, who knows...

It was such a chaotic time, many Liverpool fans were shocked and appalled that their own homegrown captain leader legend figure would even entertain the idea of leaving - let alone formally handing in a transfer request to leverage the club they love - he was a one club man after all! Some even resorted to showing their feeling at the betrayal by burning his shirt in public

Such a strong reaction was to be expected, it got quite heated at the time:

                        https://www.theguardian.com/football/2005/jul/06/newsstory.sport6

It was also bizarre/one of life’s great ironies that fast forwarding a few years it would again be Chelsea who would pop up to haunt him when Liverpool were inches from that precious first league title in 30 years - after all, in the previous game when the cameras were rolling he had ensured he had given a very public teamtalk gathering his teammates in front of the media so footage of his leadership could be broadcast to the world:

                        https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/liverpool-news-steven-gerrards-fairytale-3414519

It was even more bizarre that it was gerrards slip that handed Chelsea the game - was it perhaps a bit of karma? I doubt it, I don’t believe in karma personally, I’d say it was just coincidence. But cruel and bizarre nonetheless.

To get 121 G & 96 A in a premiere league career spanning 17 seasons was phenomenal, that’s an average of 7 goals a season and nearly 6 assists per season, in his prime seasons he did even better, being up around the 13 G & 10 A that Pogba delivered this season

I hope to they’re affordable - in particular TAA

      His averages are downright scary:

      - Player Points/Minutes/Appearances:

      - Robbo 213/3219/36 = 5.96 PP90, 5.91 PPA
      - VVD 208/3384/38 = 5.53 PP90, 5.47 PPA
      - TAA 185/2460/29 = 6.76 PP90, 6.38 PPA

I’d class affordable as anything under 22.5 for the trio

If you are choosing to spend a little more on defenders with attacking prospects and less on your midfield/forward line, i think theres still scope for balance.

The triple up is made feasible because by definition it means you can’t have Salah, Mané (or Haz)

Over 50% of last seasons big hitters are out of the equation instantly when you triple up - the money has to go somewhere

I’m not too excited by Kane, Kun or Auba

Personally I’m banking on Salah, TAA, Robbo being 28.0 or less, and will accompany them with Sterling & Laporte for another 18.5, and Vardy for another 9.0 with the bare minimum on the bench and possibly some rotating cheapies all being well

Fraser & Wilson are off the menu for me -I’m not paying 7.5 & 8.0 for them when I got them for 5.5 & 6.0 on early WC last season -could be a blind spot admittedly but it is what it is - I don’t think they’ll offer superb value this year

I’m not currently shaking in my boots at not being able to afford Rich at 8.0 or Siggy at 8.5/9.0 a season I don’t think they’ll be good value

Digne will be first name on teamsheet along with the Liverpool double up & Laporte - IF Gueye & Zouma stay etc

Prefer the quality of TAA, Robbo, Laporte, Digne, Sterling, Salah, Vardy + cheapies to hoping Bournemouth & Everton score 3 & 4 in their early games and hoping their 8.0-ish attackers are amongst the 3-4 goals

I think you overestimate the prices for Everton midfielders. I think Siggy should still be at 7.5, but might get 8.0 due to history. Sigurdsson is not a great FPL asset in general. He's too inconsistent, and loves to haul against better team. He's a season keeper type of player, but that requires him to offer decent value, something he doesn't do at 8.5+ while playing for a team outside the top 6. He had a total price change of -0.1 during the season, and never went above his original price of 7.5 I don't see why a player like that would warrant a price rise.

Hmmmm, I’m actually full sure Siggy will be minimum 8.5 - he almost broke 200 points, even while missing 3 pens, never misses a game, and has the set piece factor - I wouldn’t be surprised if he is 9.0 & will be very interested to see...

What price was he the year spurs bought him? I think he was above 8.0 that year & didn’t do well at all...

Richarlison I think minimum 8.0 as he was just too destructive when on form - either that or a reclassed up front

I could be wrong on both fronts of course, it wouldn’t be the first time (nor the last lol)

Will be interesting to see both prices of siggy and Richarlison. I can definitely see siggy at 8.5. Losing FK’s (and corners I think) to Digne put me off last year, although I still owned him for a bit. Penalty record is also pretty poor as was alluded to. Would love him at 8

Not only cool with it -looking forward to it - a 3/4-way rotation is eminently feasible

I’m not feeling the love for many attackers this season outside of sterling, Salah, (as long as they're not reclassed to forwards) and Vardy - maybe JWP, Tielemans, Maddison & H-Barnes also... possibly Redmond as I think Southampton will be good under Ralphie

Kane doesn't interest me really at the minute
Pogba will get a massive price hike
                      As will Rashford
                      Son & Moura same
                      Eriksen probably gone
                      Mane's price will rocket
                      Haz will be gone
Richarlison & Siggy big price hikes
Good luck trying to afford Jiminez
Same with Jota, who could also be a forward
                      Deulofeu big price rise
Mili will be priced out of it
Zaha might be good if he gets popped back to midfield & doesnt price rise
Fraser, Wilson, King, Brooks - need to keep an eye on them
Mahrez, Dilva, Bilva, Sane - nothing but rotation headaches

And then we have TAA, Robbo, Digne, VVD, Mendy, Laporte all just sitting waiting ready to make a mockery of the vast majority of these attackers, for much cheaper into the bargain

Don't think you can afford 4 players to rotate with the setup you're suggesting.

I wouldn't have an issue with it. The guy who came 2nd overall went into GW1 with Pedro, Richarlison, Mitrovic and King last season - all 6.5m.

It’s onviously all dependent on prices - but it’s doable - Matt Ritchie’s reclassification not withstanding:

                        Henderson(4.5)
                        Robbo(8.0), TAA(7.0), Laporte(6.5), Digne(6.0), Ritchie(6.0)
                        Salah(13.0), Sterling(12.0), _____
                        Vardy(9.0), _____
                        (4.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5)

This would leave 11.0 for two outfield attackers, either 2 striker or 2 mids, or 1 of each... or 10.0 for two attackers and a wee bit more of a bench etc -maybe a 4-way 5.0 attacking rotation even to pad out the two blank spots

If there happens to be one or two decent playing 4.5 mids/strikers then Could actually afford a 6.0/6.5 in one of the blanks - Dwight McNeil at 4.5 would be interesting for example

That leaves 10.5m so you'd have a 5.5 and a 5.0 attacker starting for you every week with fodder on the bench. Not exactly a 3/4 man rotation is it? If you go with two midfielders, which you might have to because the 5.0 strikers are usually fairly useless, you have no bench whatsoever.

I started the season with Hughes (5.0) in my 11, many had Neves at the same price. Fraser, Deulofeu and Jimenez were all 5.5 - there will be real value in some of the cheaper players again.

Funny I thought a certain couple of 5.5m strikers and midfielders did quite well at times this year 😉

It’s easily doable - although my original point was TAA’s price - that’s the biggest risk to it

His averages blow even VVD & Robbo’s out of the water so a mega price tag isn’t out of the question

                        True

But the early runners may be in the 6.0 - 7.0 category and so out of reach. There’s a danger in not being able to swap in. And out of players in different price brackets.

One thing to be cognisant of is that with VAR the all defenders but cheaper defenders even more so are likely to concede more goals as they will either concede penalties on VAR or at set pieces where they will be forced to not hold in the box leaving people more able to score goals against them from set pieces.
I think this will have the effect of making penalty takers even more valuable in fpl and also make the differential far wider between attacking defenders from teams who don't have to defend often like city and liverpool and defenders from more defensive teams like Burnley and Newcastle.
This differential may not be fully priced in this year imo so their could be a real advantage to going premium def starting this season before everyone cottons on.

I hear you, and intuitively it can sometimes seem that VAR = more pens = get penalty takers even more than you normally would for FPL

But there is actually no evidence to support the hypothesis that there is a VAR-driven material increase in penalties - In the 1,140 games from Serie A, Bundesliga, and La Liga directly after implementing VAR there were 347 penalties... in the 1,140 games directly before VAR there were 348 penalties

        https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2019/05/25/var-impact-on-fpl-may-not-be-straight-forward/

That’s not to say there won’t be more penalties next year of course (there were 103 this season, the highest ever premier league count has been 106, twice, in 2009/10 and 2016/17 and lowest ever was 52 in 2001/02 so we can have wild swings in quantity of pens without VAR) but if there is an increase/decrease, it’s going to be difficult/impossible to attribute it to VAR

The timing aspect could muddy the waters, but there really doesn’t look to be a lot of objective support for penalty takers being any more or less valuable than they would have been without VAR

Note: The World Cup is not fit for comparison - it has zero useful relevance for FPL, not only is it a tiny sample (~60 games - about a months worth of premier league fixtures) but the sample is contaminated by absolute dumpster fire teams such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Morrocco, Peru and others of that ilk

So I’m not queuing up to sign penalty takers any more (or any less) than I would have been without VAR

Interesting info thanks, I would have thought instinctively that there would be more penalties but if there are not more penalties does this not mean that defenders are no longer fouling as much which should in turn mean more goals?

There are many different factors that seem to balance out to no material change to the net amount of penalties awarded in a pre- & post- VAR environment

I just had a look there and the number of goals conceded and obviously scored in the bundesliga last season compared to the season before rose by 118 or 13.8%. This is hugely significant imo

I was talking on two points, one was the differential between cheap defenders who mostly rely on cs and attacking premium defenders which I think is going to be bigger this year due to VAR

Have a look at this review of the VAR, it breaks things down much better than simply comparing one season to another.

In the bundesliga it says there were 76 decisions overturned by VAR with 13 extra penalties awarded and 23 disallowed goals were overturned.

In Italy there were 59 penalty decisions reversed (it doesn't say whether they gave penalties or disallowed penalties given incorrectly), 16 red cards and 42 goals again it doesn't say whether these were goals ruled out after var or allowed to stand and the same with red cards.

          https://www.espn.com/soccer/blog/espn-fc-united/68/post/3624367/how-var-has-performed-in-la-liga-serie-a-bundesliga-ligue-1-and-mls-this-season

Good info - the net of all these decisions though amounts to no material change in quantity of penalties awarded before & after implementing VAR?

As we said though, that’s not to say there won’t be more (or less!) penalties next year of course (there were 103 this season, the highest ever premier league count has been 106, twice, in 2009/10 and 2016/17 and lowest ever was 52 in 2001/02 so we can have wild swings in quantity of pens without VAR) but if there is an increase/decrease, it’s going to be difficult/impossible to attribute it to VAR

You simply can't say there is no net effect of extra penalties, there may have been far less penalties were it not for VAR and a mere coincidence that it looks like there was no difference in Germany and Italy due to VAR.

What I mean is if say there were 100 penalties awarded one season and the next season there was only 80 awarded by refs but VAR intervened and awarded an extra 20 how does this show in the seasonal comparisons? You are not comparing apples with apples when just comparing one season to another.

The point is that there is no evidence that penalty takers are any more (or any less) valuable with VAR than without.

                There are no guarantees

The point is in that article 26 penalties were awarded after VAR in the bundesliga period they were looking at and 13 penalties were overturned leading to a net increase of 13 penalties given. This is significant imo and on both sides you need to look and see where teams were getting penalties last season and was simulation by players a part (zaha/sterling?) and was there honest players who were not getting penalties who may get more with VAR. Personally I think Zaha is less likely to get pens now as he will be less likely to simulate.

I generally start with a set and forget keeper and 4.0 GK fodder as well as a non playing def/mid/fwd. This allows me to have maximum utilisation of funds elsewhere and I can field a strong two autosubs from bench as well.

When it comes to a non - playing player, how do you select that player to ensure that their price don't fall over time? Sometimes I am left with 0.1m short of a transfer I want to make which haunts me later in terms of team value as well.

Do you select those on the basis of ownership? Like own a least selected player as a non playing player?

This has happened to me so many times last season and I am on the road to correct it this season.

On the basis of active ownership - which is probably impossible to gauge pre GW1, but possible on your first wildcard. Ideally you want a player selected by casuals who create a team and never login again... it isn't necessarily true that the least selected player won't drop or takes longer to drop 0.1 as he'd require fewer net transfers out than all the other players who have more ownership than him
