FPL lessons learned from Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Norwich

Liverpool got the new Premier League campaign off to a flying start on Friday night with a 4-1 win over Norwich City.

In this latest Scout Notes article, we have assessed the key Fantasy talking points from Anfield as we start making early preparations for Gameweek 2.

Also, there is a new feature for Scout Notes available to Fantasy Football Scout Members this year.

Each Scout Notes article will end with an analysis of the match data, which, more often than not, can give the best insight into the Fantasy implications, in combination with the eye test, of course.

Liverpool 4-1 Norwich City

Goals: Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m), Divock Origi (£5.5m) | Teemu Pukki (£6.5m)

Own Goals: Grant Hanley (£4.0m)

Assists: Origi, Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) | Emi Buendía (£6.0m)

Bonus Points: Origi x3, Salah x2, Pukki x1

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) rewarded the faith shown in him for the Gameweek 1 captaincy by registering a 12-point haul in Liverpool’s Friday night win.

Owned by 43% of Fantasy managers, and captained by over 60% of those who voted in the Fantasy Football Scout poll for the armband, the Egyptian was most obliging at Anfield.

He scored the second goal in the rout, latching onto the end of Roberto Firmino‘s (£9.5m) through ball and slotting cooly under Tim Krul (£4.5m).

Salah then provided the assist for Virgil van Dijk‘s (£6.5m) goal with a corner. The fact that he took the set piece will be of further encouragement to those in possession of the Egyptian.

Salah celebrates scoring Liverpool’s second goal against Norwich

However, we should not get too carried away by his involvement in the corners at least, as it appears at this early stage of the campaign that he is sharing them with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m).

The left-footed Salah took the responsibility for corners on the left side of the field, while Alexander-Arnold took those on the right, creating out-swinging crosses on both flanks.

It must be said that, despite producing some excellent crosses from open play, and getting an assist from them, the right-back’s delivery from the corner flag was relatively poor against Norwich.

However, those who opted for Alexander-Arnold over Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) were still satisfied with the outcome of the game, as he outscored his colleague by five points to two.

Alexander-Arnold provided the assist for Divock Origi‘s (£5.5m) goal with a trademark cross from deep and should have arguably registered a second assist on the night, were it not for a Firmino miss.

The right-back was played in behind the Norwich defence by a skilful Salah backheel and his ball across the goal was wrapped around the post from very close range by Firmino.

Alexander-Arnold also could have scored as he slammed a second-half direct freekick towards Norwich’s goal, only for Krul to produce an excellent save to keep him out.

Against Norwich, Alexander-Arnold had the edge over Robertson offensively

Robertson owners were perhaps the most disappointed of all considering that van Dijk registered eight points from scoring in the first half.

The Dutchman has now scored six goals in his last 18 appearances for Liverpool as he continues to extend his threat from set-pieces.

The disparity between the three key Liverpool defenders’ Gameweek 1 scores was very much rooted in the fact that Liverpool lost their clean sheet in the second half.

The Reds did not look their usual assured selves at the back in this opening match of 2019/20, even before they were forced into a goalkeeper change in the 38th minute.

Norwich did not make it easy for Liverpool as they, as promised by manager Daniel Farke, refused to park the bus and asked some questions of their illustrious hosts in the first half.

Half-way through the initial period, Norwich had registered more than double the number of Liverpool’s shots (five to two) with Marco Stiepermann (£5.5m) responsible for three of those efforts.

From the off, Norwich looked to get on the ball where possible and pressed Liverpool high up the pitch.

It was this pressure that led their first chance, ensuring that Alisson‘s (£6.0m) wayward pass in the first five minutes was pounced upon by Teemu Pukki (£6.5m). His cross into the box was fired over the bar by Stiepermann but was certainly a warning sign of what Norwich are capable of this season.

Pukki busted the Liverpool clean sheet in the second half

Just as they did on their way to winning the Championship title last season, the Canaries played the ball out from the back as often as possible, even if, at times, it left them a little exposed.

When in possession at the back, the full-backs pushed up the pitch and the centre-backs split across either side of the penalty box to receive passes from goalkeeper Krul.

Even when they were 4-0 down, Norwich were determined to press and prod Liverpool from the front.

That led to substitute Moritz Leitner (£6.0m) finding the space to shoot inside the box around the hour mark, seeing his effort cannon off the crossbar.

These elements of their play are bound to have both positive and negative effects for Norwich this season. It was this energetic insistence on moving the ball and putting pressure on opposing defenders that helped Pukki score their first top-flight goal of the campaign but it is likely to lead to plenty of shots given up – good news for captain candidates set to face the Canaries.

As for the implications on Liverpool, there will certainly be further concern over their defensive assets.

What Norwich were able to do at Anfield was akin to the test Manchester City gave the Liverpool back-line in the Community Shield final.

Klopp did make one change from that match, starting Joe Gomez (£5.5m) at centre-back instead of Joel Matip (£5.5m) but even at this early stage, those with a Liverpool defensive double-up may already be considering their options.

Once again, Liverpool looked especially fragile down Alexander-Arnold’s flank, and Norwich enjoyed most of their work in the first half in his area of the pitch.

The fact that has happened both against elite opposition in Manchester City and a lesser-side in the Canaries might just increase concerns over Alexander-Arnold’s role in the team moving forward.

Alisson had to come off injured in the 38th minute

Those who had grown unfamiliar with just how cruel FPL can be were given a sharp reminder in the first half.

Alisson came into the 2019/20 season as the most selected goalkeeper, in 32.5% of squads, but he was withdrawn in the first half.

The Liverpool shot-stopper went down with a calf problem in the 38th minute and had to be replaced by Adrian (£4.5m), who was added to FPL at £4.5m.

There seemed to be a suggestion from the media that Alisson was not quite ready to come back into the side so soon after returning from Copa America duty over the summer.

Either way, those who signed him for Gameweek 1 will be bitterly disappointed as they scored just one point and may now have to make an unwanted goalkeeper transfer for Gameweek 2.

Alisson has already been ruled out of the European Super Cup clash with Chelsea midweek and is, therefore, a doubt for the trip to Southampton next Saturday.

“The Ali situation is madness. It’s a calf injury. He felt as if something hit him from the back. He will not be ready for Wednesday, I can say that already. It’s probably more than a strain. We will have to see. It does not look too good.” – Jurgen Klopp

In the meantime, could former West Ham man Adrian become an incredible set and forget option for our Fantasy teams? We’ll have to wait for more information on Alisson’s injury but Adrian does have some potential.

“(Adrian) is a very confident guy and he came in and I don’t think he wanted to sit only on the bench for the next couple of years. He made himself ready. It is a situation, but if you are in a situation like this you want to have somebody who has played the league and who is experienced. He is 32, a calm guy, emotional as well, good with his feet – how we saw – and that’s really important for us. There are a lot of good things, but you still don’t want to have a situation where one goalie is fit. That’s how it is, but we have to see.” – Jurgen Klopp

Finally, as expected, Sadio Mané (£11.5m) was missing from the Liverpool starting line-up following his late return from African Cup of Nations commitments this summer.

That allowed Origi feature on the left flank of Liverpool’s 4-3-3 system, and get two attacking returns.

It was his first-half cross that was deflected into the Norwich net by Grant Hanley (£4.0m), and Origi connected with an Alexander-Arnold cross before half-time to make it 4-0.

Whether Origi is involved in Gameweek 2 remains to be seen though, given that Mané replaced him in the 73rd minute.

More importantly, the Senegalese international looked incredibly sharp, bearing down on Norwich’s defence from his position on the left flank. The energy he showed in his 17-minute cameo suggests he is probably raring to get back into the starting line-up.

Ozil and Kolasinac not travelled to Newcastle: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49299414

Pepe more likely to start I'd guess.

I understand that it's scary but surely if they travelled with the club they would be fine. Or are they really that concerned about their safety that they won't go on the pitch for fear of being attacked?

            I don't get it :-/

It's more that their minds may not be focused on the game I believe. Their families probably frightened too.

6 extra things that the stats won’t necessarily tell you about last night game (written whilst waiting for a cancelled Northern Rail train!):

      1. Robbo needs Mane to be effective down the wing. He didn’t get his overlapping runs because Origi is essentially a striker, so the link up play wasn’t there. Origi was poor in defending/tracking back as well, so Robbo spend most of the time playing deeper. No luscious crosses on the overlap. So this meant...

      2. Everything went down the right, good and bad. The switch of play seemed to be emphasised on getting Trent on the ball for the cross, and one-two passing to get Salah into positions. As usual Salah tried to hard, but it was noticeable that without Mane, there was an emphasis on the right. This also meant that when Norwich attacked, they tended to target that side - Trent will have to up him defensive game despite his nice cross.

      3. Norwich played with no fear. They played very well out of the press multiple times - impressive considering the occasion. Yes they will get caught out, but something to notice; they will not necessarily be a team that’s a ‘get rid!’ type of defenders (a la Burnley). See what happens when the first choice back line returns.

      4. Second half Norwich’s aim wasn’t to get Pukki on the ball necessarily, but get him on the ball in the right positions. He spent most of the first half running wide channels but then had no one in the box before Liverpool could win it back. Second half he stayed more central, and got his goal. He looked sharp.

      5. A word on set pieces (as mentioned above) every time there was a free kick, Salah and Trent were straight on it, discussing, unless it was deep when generally Liverpool played a quick short ball. Any corner that wasn’t a ‘routine’ also tended to be played to Salah/Trent as well. Something to keep an eye on.

      6. Liverpool will 100% take their cut off the pedal to ‘rest’ whilst a game is on. 4-0 up in 40 minutes would make you think that it was going to be a cricket score, but second half looked like a team going through the motions (hence the goal). Good for rest and recovery, bad if the 4 players that scored were not the ones you wanted.

TLDR: Robbo needs Mane, Trent looks a season keeper, Norwich and Pukki will score goals. But we knew this already!

He was pretty advanced at times, wasn't he? Up by the corner of the box; sometimes in the corner.

Found himself with space for a cross/shot often, although deliveries were a tiny bit rusty (not bad, though) and that the space won't happen again every team.

Have a look again. He pretty much stops at the penalty box. And none of those touches were the lovely sprint curlers. Most of it was waiting for Origi to pass the ball, and when it didn't happen, back he would go. Or receive a pass that meant he would play backwards. Didn’t look dangerous at all, but good defensively.

        Nice write up Squishy!

I thought Robbo looked a little off the pace during the charity shield; there wasn’t his typical barnstorming runs. That and the little hip niggle he picked up was enough for me not to start with him.

Thought he was much better last night but still another 5% to go. I saw plenty of overlapping but maybe the chemistry isn’t quite there with Origi and he wasn’t played in.

He wasn’t linking well without Origi. In the same way that Lucas got an assist for spurs by just playing the ball backwards, there wasn’t that chemistry.

He’s always going to have involvement, but the difference is quality. I could hit 20 crosses from a standing start and never beat the first man, whereas Trent’s assist was run and cross, easier to generate the whip.

Conjecture sure, but clear numbers don’t show this.

Its fishy that Lyiz left a ucl club for europa. Does he have issues with Lamoard? With transfer ban I dont think lampard is stupid to not have a defender like Luiz who is bit of wildcard. Even Rudiger is out I think, Cahill free sell, that only leaves Azpi and Zouma as fit CBs. As Manutd fan I am relieved as now we have chance for top 4 even with light midfield and attack

I reckon Luiz realised he won't be playing much under Lampard.

Lampard seemed to indicate that no one was guaranteed a starting place and he wanted competition. Plus for Luiz at his age another move with a hefty signing on fee makes sense.

In the CB department we have Rudiger, Zouma, Christensen & Tomori.

Azpi can play backup CB. Rudiger is nearly fit.

We do still have some depth, so it's not that bad. Plus, the players will only improve with regular game time.

Well technically we do have Zappacosta still (I think he's in the Squad List still), short-term.

We also have Reece James as RB. Currently injured, but also not too far off. He's an extremely promising player. Played at Reading last year and was one of their best & most adaptable players.

He was told his game time would be reduced and it was Luiz’ choice to leave...but there wasn’t much choice for him in terms of which club.

Arsenal was the most suitable option being so late in the window, in London, with previously good working relationships in Emery at PSG and Edu with Brazil.

It's the sort of transfer that will inevitably frustrate when the player you just transferred out scores next time. Get one and stick, or get an extra one.

I assume you already knew TAA takes most of the corners/free kicks and still went for Robbo? Nothing in last nights game provided anything new in terms of surprises between the two.

I liked the look of West Ham's attack in pre-season. Haller, Fornals, Lanzini, Anderson and Wilshere all gelled well together, playing beautiful football at times.

I punted on Haller, so I'm hoping they can cause City problems in the early kickoff today! 🙂

The attack has looked a lot better than its ever been in the last few years. I've gone for Haller too. Was going to double up with Lanzini but decided it was a little too risky in the end. Can see lots of goals at both ends today

            Haller on the City game:

"What a s*** game to start with!” joked Sebastien Haller. “I go there for a lot of money, now first game City! Why?

“There are better games to build your confidence! Hopefully I will touch the ball! We will see.”

I've started the season with 1.0 ITB and if Jimenez out-scores Jota it'll of course be annoying, but there's so much I can do with that 1.0m

              - Jota/Wood > Jimenez
              - Jota/Wood > Haller
              - Wilson > Vardy/Rashford
              - Perez > Fraser/Martial
              - Barkely > Maddison
              - 4.5 DEF > 5.5 DEF
              - 4.0 DEF > 4.5/5.0 DEF

              Etc.

Hopefully the flexibility come in handy and I'm not cursing at Raul 😀

I’ve left 1.0ITB aswell. You’ve hit the nail on the head with those potential moves. The reason i did it was potentially:

                Adams > Kean
                King > Haller
                Perez > Martial
                Montoya > 5.5 Defender

Plenty of flexibility with 1.0 ITB

Probably a wise decision, I'm a big fan of money itb at the start of the season. There are just so many unknowns and the flexibility it gives you is pretty significant.

Kept 0.5m itb, and I'm already eyeing up a few players.

How do you cancel your future captain picks in the SKY game.
For example if I want to keep my captaincy on Salah and stop it going on Kane?
They seem to have changed it slightly from last year or am I missing something ?

Not sure I follow- you can have different captains each game day and Kane is playing today and will get double points- keep it on him. You can change back to Salah when he next plays.

I mean I had it on Salah for yesterday's game.

But with the scheduled captain picks Kane is going to be picked next for today.

But if I want to keep it on Salah how do it?
Last season I would just select Salah for each gameday afterwards that option no longer seems to be there.

It becomes available when the next game week is live and then you choose him again- I thought that was the same as last year- your last pick stays as captain unless you change it.

I can't see any Hot Topic on how Sane's injury affects City's attacking assets...

This will be my main focus in today's match - if it allows KDB more license to roam forward, solidifies Bernardo's position as an attacking winger (rather than working between the lines) or affords Mahrez a prolonged run in the team we could be looking at some value for City's run of fixtures from GW3 onwards. Who have people got their eye on today?

Just needs patience, people make changes before the game week is even finished
By Monday values start dropping . Yet players need to start to consider midweek matches too.
So for players like me I suffer with price changes in the long run .
So my advice to the sheep, impatient players or newbies, is wait until Thursday this week to make any transfers, unless it’s an obvious injury like Allison, but still WAIT and see how long he is out for .

So, how many of you made last minute changes ahead of the deadline and
                  a) had a huge win (eg bringing in Salah or switching Robertson to VVD)
                  b) wish they'd put their hands in the blender before taking that last look at their FPL team?

Personally, i went blender and left my team unchanged for pretty much 2 weeks. Almost 3© Salah but bottled it. Dendonker is still in my XI and i have Zinchenko. Lundstram is my only 'viable' sub so will be an anxious wait for some of those team sheets!

This game was always set for pool players for me, Salah , Robbo, TAA. At no point did I take those 3 out.

However, I did change from Siggy and Lucas to KDB and Perez, so that may be my blender moment!

My overall points are showing as 26 so far but when I go into my team to see the points under each player - it’s not displaying. Anyone else seeing this?

If Allison is out for a while does anybody think this could have a negative effect on TAA. I dont mean in regards to CS's which would almost certainly be affected(don't know how much tho), but more in terms of already in question minutes. With Adrain, a clearly weaker shot stopper, between the sticks Liv will have to tighten up in def and given his shakey defensive stats maybe his rotation will be more apparent than before? All conjecture of course, just food for thought.

Will be interesting how Klopp handles the RB / RCB positions; Liverpool looked vulnerable there. It’s not helped by Salah staying forward of course, but looks like it will need addressing with Henderson providing more defensive cover perhaps.

Henderson didn't seem to have much interest in his defensive responsibilities last night.

He’s so intense all the time! If he calmed down a little and thought how he best he could position himself to help the team, it would make a world of difference. I don’t like criticising him as he’s clearly improving every year and is critical to the way Liverpool press.

                          Grade 2:

Grade two calf muscle tears result in partial tearing of your muscle fibres. Full recovery normally takes several weeks with good rehabilitation. Return to high load or high-speed sport should be guided by your physiotherapist to prevent an unnecessary retear, which is reasonably common in moderate calf tears.
