FPL Question Time – Consult our panel ahead of Gameweek 3

It is a short but important week coming up for Fantasy Premier League managers.

There are some big decisions to be made ahead of Gameweek 3 as some prepare to spend their two free transfers, others consider the Wildcard and that’s before we even get on to the captaincy.

So we’ve put together another panel of fine FPL minds to help you with any dilemmas.

Who’s on the panel this week?

Simon March – Former FPL champion who won the title in 2014/15 and has provided excellent advice ever since.

Always Cheating – The USA’s number one FPL podcast duo comprising of Josh and Brandon.

Gregor – Long-time Fantasy Football Scout moderator.

Doosra – Fantasy Football Scout user with some rather popular custom tables.

    The Review - GW 2

Having written a piece on how the action unfolded in GW 1, I once again cast my eyes on the Premier League action played this weekend. Here are 8 important takeaways for FPL managers post GW 2:

    1) Much has been said of the Liverpool defence since the season began but the signs of regression are apparent. Liverpool are ranked 6th worst for xGc (expected goals conceded) and have conceded 5 big chances in two favorable fixtures so far. That was unthinkable a year ago, but it must be kept in mind that their full backs are still posting good numbers. Robertson has the highest number of touches in the final third of all defenders in the league. Meanwhile, Trent is ranked 2nd for big chances created of all
    players in the league.

    2) Sheffield United and Man Utd both had an xGc (expected goals conceded) of just 0.27 over the weekend. Both defences gave up minimal shots inside the box including zero big chances to their opponents, which was very impressive given that Sheffield United are a promoted side while Man United have historically struggled against Wolves. Worth noting that Sheffield United’s opponents, Palace, are now up against Man United so Man United on paper are looking good for a clean sheet.

    3) Out of all defenders who have played 180 minutes so far, no defender has been accumulating bonus at a faster rate than Aston Villa’s Ahmed El Mohammady - his minutes per baseline baps ratio is an incredible 3.9. Brighton’s Lewis Dunk and Man United’s Aaron Wan Bissaka have a really impressive ratio for bonus as well and should be amongst the points
whenever their side is to keep a clean sheet.

    4) Leandro Trossard was Brighton’s most advanced player in the game vs West Ham. He recorded the highest number of shots inside the box in the game, including one big chance. Montoya once again was involved in the final third, and even created one big chance but was unlucky not to get an assist.

    5) No forward has had as many shots inside the box as Teemu Pukki over the first two weeks. He sits joint top for big chances as well, with Ashley Barnes the only other forward with as many big chances. £4.5 Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell sits 2nd for midfielders for chances created as well, suggesting that there could be plenty of bargains from the men at Carrow Road.

    6) A look at the xGc table (expected goals conceded) for matches played so far shows the very familiar sight of Man City sitting top with least xGc and shots in the box conceded. A closer look at the table further suggests that the Everton defence with an xGc of 2.18 (with 0 goals actually conceded) is overperforming while the Watford defence with an xGc of 1.51 (with 4 goals actually conceded) is underperforming.

    7) No player in the league has created as many chances as Kevin De Bruyne so far. His numbers for chance creation are astounding as he has already created 12 chances, including 5 big chances in just over 2 games – one of them against a top 6 side. Of all players in the league who have started 2 games, De Bruyne ranks best for bonus accumulation with his minute per bps ratio sitting at an unworldly 3.1. An interesting point to note is that he was the most advanced player on the field against Spurs which coincided with David Silva missing out. With David Silva in the team, he was playing considerably deeper and posted inferior stats to when the Spaniard was left out. Could be a trend, could be an anomaly – I guess we need more data to find out.

    8) Bournemouth are ranked 3rd worst in the xGc table (expected goals conceded), which is extremely telling because they have will face far more potent attacks than the likes of Sheffield United’s and Villa’s that they have faced so far. With City ranked comfortably best for expected goals scored (and Sterling ranked highest for big chances of all players in the league), this could be a fixture where the likes of De Bruyne and Sterling look primed for points. With Sterling having an incredible record against Bournemouth and form to back it up, he looks to be the best captaincy option on paper.

Thanks for taking the time out, I hope you enjoyed the read!

Nice post, and that point re David Silva's effect on De Bruyne is interesting and something I'd been looking at this morning. It's definitely a trend I expect to continue when both paired together.

This is rapidly becoming my favourite weekly content on the site! Thanks again FantasyFreak.

Btw - nice point on Sterling against Bournemouth but one question: do you think it may actually be because Bournemouth were playing sides they expected to beat that they left themselves so open? Just thinking that the last two seasons City have actually relied on last gasp winners down there (Sterling 2 years ago; Mahrez last year). Last year in particular, Bournemouth were so defensive they didn’t register a single shot or even get a corner.

On the other hand, Newcastle look pretty demoralised and face golden boot favourite Kane at his new stomping ground. I’m leaning towards this!

Highly value your feedback mate thank you! 🙂

That's a very interesting point you raise. I think the 0-1 win came at a time when City were fine with grinding out wins. With the chances they are creating right now (coinciding with De Bruyne being in supreme form), I expect them to score quite a few - particularly if they get an early goal.

Yeah you’re right. I just checked and they were disrupted by losing KDB and Stones to big injuries during the game too. For what it’s worth, I’ve also looked at Bournemouth’s defence at home from last season - stats are not great reading for them! I was thinking Kane was a no brainer this week, not so sure now

      Fantastic TFF as usual

On Bournemouth, I think they will concede a lot of chances relative to most other teams if not all ... over the season. For this weekend though, I think they are in a good place to give City a game: they have 4 points on the board (going well) and they have quality players all over their team who are in good form: Ake, Fraser, Wilson come to mind.

City are almost guaranteed to score in every game against all teams bar Pool but I think Bournemouth could score in this one as well. City would settle for another 2-1 win; I don’t think Bournemouth will get hammered.

I have Trossard. Brought in Mount for Perez. Ignoring West Ham attack until they have regular starters

The GW3 game is enough to pay back. Chelsea vs Norwich should be high scoring. This is football, so it could end up 0:0, but it looks high scoring

What are people’s views on having a strong 11 with 3 benchfodders vs. a strong 12 with 2 benchfodders

What are pros/cons of each strategy? At the moment I am mulling on Kane/Wickham to give me a strong 11 vs Rashford/Pukki for a strong 12

You can probably be a little more aggressive with the amount of fodder if you have your WC up your sleeve still. Donkey fits the role nicely as both fodder in terms of price, and playable (although with limited expectations).

There was an article here in pre-season on using your bench.
It's sensible to have 2 active subs - a third will very rarely be used so is unimportant.
so basically a Strong XI and 2 active subs, prob being a 4.5 def and 4.5 mid.

    How's this draft chaps?

    Pope
    VVD, Dunk, Lundstram, Soyuncu
    Mane, Sterling, KDB, Martial
    Kane, Pukki

    (Button, Dendoncker, Pieters, Greenwood)

Rotation between Dunk, Lundstram, Soyunku, Dendoncker & Pieters seems to be good for the next 4 or 5 weeks.

    Alternatively, Kane, Dendoncker & Soyuncu (4-4-2) -> Wickham, Son & AWB (4-5-1).

    Cheers

Do you not think that the VVD money could be shared around defence? 2 of Coleman/ Mina/ Zinchenko/ Emerson over VVD and a 4.5?

Have the same front 8 exept Cantwell instead of Dendoncker so I like it.

Looking at Pool's and Man City's fixtures I prefer Zinchenko over a Pool Defender for the moment.

My backline is: Pope, Digne, Zinch, Lundstram, Kelly, 4.5 (probably Villa or Brighton)

No players or teams can have form in two games. Better of taking a few hits at this stage, wildcard will km be much more valuable after a couple of months when the boys and men, football wise, are clear.

taking hits on a Monday/Tuesday (if you have playing bench players) has always been my own game 😀 I'd recommend it tbh

      Your team full of differentials?

No just a team I picked to set me up for 6-8 weeks. Not picking the likes of Perez and double Bournemouth to lead me to want to waste a WC this early in the season.

I've got double Bournemouth (Wilson & King)

          I'm not wildcarding until December.

Go on Twitter. Most accounts wildcarding or strongly considering it!

Twitter is a classic breeding ground for those with little patience or tolerance and demanding instant gratification in a me me me fashion.

I play another game without the transfer rises feature and you play that completely different. The transfer market creates the herd mentally because building (and protecting) team value is incredibly important for the 2nd half of the season.

In this game I'm bringing in Barnes & Pukki, I'm fairly confident both are poor to average picks benefitting from statistical variance. Make bank and move on.

In the other game the strategy is about maximising points. My transfers are more long term, minimising hits and I'm bringing in Kean & Haller as I genuinely think they are the mid-priced strikers to own if you look over the next 10 GWs.

More like crapping himself over everyone else wildcarding and getting a big jump

Only need use 1 of my 2 FT’s. Looks like everyone is crapping themselves and using their WC (water closet) though

Are you a Utd fan by any chance with the triple up? Not a huge fan of double Utd attack at all tbh, they just don't look threatening enough final 3rd. Don't see how 3M is gonna get you one of Salah/Mane without losing one of Sterling/KDB which you're unlikely to want to do over the coming weeks with those fixtures?

Wilson, Moura, Perez > Pukki, KDB, McGinn -4? Yay or nay? Thanks.

which UTD defender would you want:

    A) Wan B
    B) Maguire
    C) I wouldn't want a UTD defender

I have 2FT's. Wanting to bring in Martial for Fraser. Current defence is TAA, Vvd, Digne, Zinc, Lund. Looking to downgrade Robbo to find the extra 0.2Mn for Martial, so happy for other suggested defenders up to £6.8mn

The TAA in my defence is actually Robbo.

Thanks both, not very conclusive so far

    Pope Button
    TAA Robbo Digne Montoya Lundstram
    Salah Sterling Fraser Perez Drinkwater
    Vardy King Greenwood

    A) Robbo + Fraser > VVD + Martial
    B) King + Fraser > Pukki + Mount
    C) King + Fraser + Robbo > Pukki + Martial + VVD
