How the Champions League and Europa League could affect FPL assets

The UEFA Champions League and Europa League group stages get underway on the other side of the international break.

The first ties take place in between Gameweeks 5 and 6, with the final group matches scheduled for mid-December.

The seven Premier League sides involved in European competition will also enter the Carabao Cup at the third round stage and, if these clubs progress to the quarter-final of that competition, they will play twice a week, every week, from now until the turn of 2020 – with the exception of the international breaks.

Four of the “big six” sit in the top seven of our Season Ticker over the next six Gameweeks (we’ll be Frisking the Fixtures over the international break) and players from these teams may be dominating Fantasy managers’ thoughts when it comes to transfers and Wildcards.

With that in mind, we thought it was worth a look at the fixture schedule for Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers over the next two months, given that all of these teams are still involved in European competition.

We have stopped at the end of October as the TV fixtures for November and beyond have yet to be announced, so there is a lot of rejigging to the Premier League calendar still to factor in.

We’ve had a fairly easy ride in the first month of 2019/20 but rotation may start to become more of an issue with all seven of the aforementioned sides competing on multiple fronts.

Jurgen Klopp said of his squad ahead of Gameweek 4:

We need them all, we need them all 100%. It is the very first part of the season, the first four Premier League games, and we had a busier schedule than other teams but still not that busy during the week.

That will all come afterwards, so no reason for resting players at the moment. It is about finding rhythm, finding the mood again, that we do the right things in the right moment. It is not the moment for a lot of changes.

After this international break, that will change completely. In the moment, the defensive set-up or whatever, as always, it is about who is in the best shape.

We have had a full week to train and when the boys won the last game and showed me then that they are still in their best possible shape, then we will only think about a couple of really small changes.

Pep Guardiola, when asked about Joao Cancelo (£5.4m), also said last week:

When we come back from the international break, we have Norwich, after three days, we have to travel to Ukraine, after three days we have a game here, then Carabao Cup. Start the real season in terms of a lot of games.

Joao, we’re delighted what we have seen but arrived late so was not in pre-season. Joao started to understand what to do. And now, maybe tomorrow, maybe after the international break, he start to play. He has to be ready.

Wolves, one of the most settled sides of 2018/19, have already been in midweek European action this season and some Fantasy managers have already suffered the consequences of Nuno Espirito Santo’s Europa League-influence rotation: Diogo Jota (£6.4m), Jonny (£5.5m), Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) and Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) have all been benched once in the league already.

Below is a club-by-club itinerary for September and October, with the fixtures in italics Champions League/Europa League/Carabao Cup ties.

triple city midfield with Dilva instead of Ota KDB Sterling anyone? Defence would be a rotation of Lowton Lundstram Montoya and Aarons (which is quite perfect) alongside TAA. Worth a shot or is it wrong to trust Dilva

I've just gone double (Sterling & KDB) and put the other money elsewhere. Think double is enough.

      Get Digne in alongside TAA

Don't have to with Digne, even if he loses his CS he still has a great chance of attacking returns.

It would mean you are either going without salah (nailed and selfish every game with pens for > 80mins), sterling or having an unbalanced team so I believe it would be yours sir

yeah, Ive never been here in 12 yrs! I went as high as 169 OR midway through gw 2 with Cantwell and Pukki.

                        *gulp

It's early days and the ranks are very very congested at the moment. 15-20 pts makes a hell of a difference in a GW.

It's really difficult in the 1000s, mate. I finished 833OR in 2015/16 and it's so hard just watching your rank fall and there is nothing you can do about it. Small margins make a huge difference.

Have very low hopes of it making any difference but on a WC and trying to make/save a bit of money.

Eventually want Dendonker, Guilbert & the cheapest defender available (don't care if not playing, for 3rd bench).

Dendonker looks like he may drop so taken him out just incase, hopefully get him back for 4.4.

I've put Guendouzi in for him + Rico & Mings.

          What are the chances of:

          Dendonker > 4.4
          Guendozi > 4.7
          Rico > 4.2
          Mings > 4.7

I have little hope for the last 3 spots. Any better options in those spots for possible double rises?

Dendocker seems very unlikely to drop this GW. 34k transfer out is a lot and would imagine the bulk that are would be doing so on WC.

Those double risers all look pretty unlikely as well. Sorry

Yeah very little hope of it making a difference.

Dendonker I'm hopeful of, 103k transfers out last week for 34k is achievable over the next 10 days.

That could be put down to his reduced minutes in GW3 but even after GW2 he was nearly 20k out, twice as long till the deadline so could see twice as many transfers out.

              Figures firmly crossed!

              1. AndyCook
                  4 years, 6 months ago

Free transfers are not time based though so twice the time more likely means transfers twice as slow and probably means more wildcards as people target the international break under the illusion that it has more price changes

So stuck in terms of what to do and don't like the structure of my team. too late to WC given that i have missed price rises? 1ft and 0.4m

            Pope -- Heaton
Taa Vvd Digne Zincheko -- Rico
Sterling Kdb Perez -- cantwell dendocker
            King Kane Pukki

            A: Perez >> 6.7m mid
            B: Perez + Kane >> Fanderson + Firmino (-4)
C: Perez + Kane >> Salah + J.Ayew (-4) and rotate ayew/cantwell but both have a tough fixture this gw
D: WC and bring in Salah; get Haller and Barnes; get rid of heaton to a 4m gk

I need you to answer this carefully for me please. It would mean a lot, I am having an awful lot of trouble deciding.

            A) Haller + Martial + Trossard
            B) Wood + KDB + Cantwell/Ayew rotation

            1. Kaiser123
              • 4 Years

Probably B. I think Ayew/Cantwell will be a little less than Haller points. KDB should smash Martial and if KDB is injured easily changed to good alts. Son etc

I am a little worried about Haller smashing it. Being a West Ham fan will make it easier. Trossard vs wood not too much to worry about but I guess it is time I realise KDB is too good to miss

B here imo, would have been so good if you could get Barnes instead of Wood though. But the goals will come for wood. That Cantwell/ ayew rotation will outscore trossard imo and then you're left with KDB vs Martial and I think there's a clear winner there.

OUT THE LEAGUE CUP (free midweek 24/25 Sept - between Week 6 & 7)

Having been knocked out already, Norwich, Palace, Burnley and Newcastle have a nice midweek with no league cup between GW 6 & 7.

Burnley/Norwich fresh for their match up in 6.
Palace/Norwich both fresh for their game at Selhurst in 7.

But Palace v Wolves is attractive for Palace as Wolves have game after game after game. Wolves Chopping and changing like mad I expect.

Don’t fancy Newcastle much home v Brighton and away Leicester in 6&7.

Burnley away to Villa in 7. Will Villa be tired and play strong team away v Brighton a 3 days before in Cup?

What players are you bringing in to help move up the ranks?

I feel that are a few that haven't been discussed as much that all play for top 6 teams:

Aubameyang/Lacazette- absolutely incredible fixtures. Will no doubt get returns if kept until December with their fixture schedule. I'm finding it hard to bring in a premium striker with my current team but Auba seems as solid a pick as any (despite my preference for mid priced strikers)

Eriksen- at 8.8, I feel that he actually has a bit to prove if he wants his preferred clubs to come swooping for him in the summer. Spurs have solid immediate fixtures in the next few. I'm hoping for more minutes from Lucas Moura but tempted to do the upgrade.

David Silva- has been discussed a bit more than others on here. I'd definitely be worried about rest for him with CL starting, but with the Lapore injury, it opens another slot for a City attacker (besides 2 of Sterling,Kun, Kbd) that may bring in more points than just a hopeful CS from Zinchenko/Otamendi etc.

I think there are a lot of Zin/KDB/Sterling teams doing well out there so Aguero (c) can help move you up the ranks for the time being.

Agree with Aubam and Laca... Also would throw pepe in there. I like all 3 but atm going KDB so no Pepe and just changed to cheaper forwards so Laca and Aubam not an option atm.

Don't trust Tottenham tbh, if any I'd go Son. Eriksen not bad but too inconsistent imo right now.

Prefer KDB, Kun, Raz and a few of the defenders over Dilva tbh. Too risky imo.

Vardy, Maddison are great but fixtures not the best. Struggling to think of those I'd trust. Currently got Wesley upfront myself with the basic Pukki, Raz, KDB and Salah but not doing too great so far.

I've had Stones since the start, not gotten around to getting rid of him yet but now that he's back fit and Laporte is out, I think he might be a good differential. Should get plenty of minutes and City should keep clean sheets with their great fixtures.

Hoping Lanzini can be a good differential.

Jimenez has barely ever been mentioned on here despite all the talk of mid-price strikers. But I think he might be a good steady point scorer and is still good value at 7.4. On pens. Just don't know how I'd get him in as I'd have to find a few mil to upgrade Wickham.

Sterling. No high quality replacement in his position. Nailed for 90 mins when starting. Main beneficiary from pep

Really not sure. Sterling for me atm as had him from the start. However, with the CL coming I honestly think Jesus may play as they aint the trickiest of fixtures and Kun in the league which could be ideal. Won't be too far behind eachother I don't think

Sterling because of how well the mid priced forwards are doing. Plus Jesus back soon could mean that Kun back to being subbed of at 65, one goal and no baps.

Mid priced mods are doing well too. I don’t see that as an argument for one or the other.

I think Pukki, Barnes, Haller and Abraham are comfortably outperforming mid-priced mids, in points, stats and the eye test. When you check, do remember that abraham and Haller have only played 3 each.

I'm just speaking from what I've watched. All 4 are terrific options and I'd happily have 2 or 3 of them in my team. Cant say the same about mids in the same price bracket

Until Sterling is benched/rotated/rested everyone is going to say Sterling.

I’m going with Aguero as I think he’s marginally a more explosive captain option.

                  Sterling.

Extra point for a goal and CS point. Will probably play more minutes over the season than Kun. Also, I already have Sterling and getting Aguero in would require at least one hit, so it's easier for me to stay with Sterling at the moment.

                  Both obviously great options though.

Whether you are able to get Kun in easily isn’t really the question though, is it?

It was quite an open-ended question. The fact that I have Sterling already is 100% a consideration in the context of my team, that's how I interpreted it.

Over the course of the season Sterling will score more points. Even in Aguero's most explosive campaign 14/15 (26 goals, 10 assists) its still below what Sterling's achieved over the last couple of season. That's not to say Aguero won't outscore him over certain periods tho.

                    4 years, 6 months ago

I feel that they will get a similar number of attacking returns per game played, Aguero’s will be more goals but at only 4 points a goal and Sterling’s closer to an even split between goals and assists. By the time you factor in clean sheets and assume similar minutes on the pitch Sterling will probably just sneak by Aguero by 0.5 or so points a game

If anything I think Sterling will see more overall minutes

Going to have to try and make decisions on City attacking players by looking at lineups/minutes in league and CL. I know Pep mixes it up but a pattern may present itself.

Sterling because imo over the season he'll play more min and score more points and when jesus is back Aguero will be rotated quite a bit.

I’m planning to bring dsilva in as a straight swap with moura (although I could see moura getting decent minutes) . I’m planning to keep him until a downgrade or upgrade emerges that I want to jump on. I’m worried about his rests definitely but with Laporte injured, I’m using dsilva as a route to triple city attack

FFS so upon being asked to make a draft for maximus’ Fantasy above I have found a dreamy WC team. What do we think? It might be my favourite so far. Dendoncker and Lundstram rotate perfectly on bench in case of Aguero no shows.

Ah. I'd assumed you meant this thread.

Anything worth changing here? My big problem is lack of funds/flexibility up front, I'm in quite a rigid 4-5-1.

If you're unhappy with one player, add a cheaper team player with good fixtures.

You can then upgrade to a bench option with good fixtures and you then have... flexibility!

Who's the more pressing transfer, WB or Heaton?

Its heaton to Pope that should come first, right?

Heaton fine for the best fixture so I’d wait, Pope already risen in price

Dont fancy a clean sheet against an attack heavy west ham. I also should have said I have 0.8 in the bank so although not hitting it earlier is a pain the price rise doesn't kill me

In the same situation as you, I’ll be offloading AWB first as Pope has an away fixture and Heaton plays home this week, should suffice

No. Just means more transfers out are needed for a drop. Players are price protected if they are newly added to the game or they have a red flag that gets completely removed, not downgraded to yellow or orange.

I am really thinking of going KDB for Sterling. Guy is on bloody fire. He will top assist ranks this season and plenty bonus and chip in with goals. My team just will not feel the same without Salah and have Aguero for now so easy to bring in Sterling for Aguero if need be at a later stage. Plus KDB opens up a slot in midfield for another midfielder who I reckon is going to haul this season, Tielemans who has been under the radar and seems to have turned the corner. KDB and Tielemans bound to score much more points as a combo than just having Sterling. If KDB hits 200+ and Tielemans 150+ then BOOM!

Leicester are starting to look good at the moment, dark horse this season. Would not trust them defensively but good attacking football on offer. Tielemans and Vardy players to have from there.

Most important thing is to be happy with your team and make your own decisions. Seems fine- you can’t own everybody. I’d prefer sterling and kbd over kun long term but that’s just me. I actually started the season with kbd instead of sterling (missed his hatrick) but that’s fpl for you

I like this outside if the box thinking. I have KDB and Sterling but I'm not sold on the pairing because of the other options you could have.

KDB is the value pick. What can you do with the rest to find value?

                                Excellent post.

If I do KDB for Sterling then I can do Boly for Digne and I have VVD and TAA already. So that is essentialy one hauler out for 3 haulers.

Did people watch the Leicester game? I did and Tielemans did not look good. If you owned Tielemans then well done you got lucky, but if people bringing him based on that game then I suggest you rewatch it.

The goal was impossible to miss, literally impossible. The guy should have got a red card. If all you see is goal and assist, Tielemans is good then thats not great logic to go by.
I have Vardy but if I didnt and was going for a mid, it would be Madison 100%

Out of the four below, which two are the most pressing transfers out:

                                Rashford
                                Martial

                                Walker Peters

Currently thinking Martial and Perez out, for free.

                                Team:
                                Pope
                                TAA- VVD-Lundstrom-Montoya
                                Sterling-Salah-Martial-A Perez

                                    On a WC.

Any thoughts? Would quite like to retain Salah over Mane but can't squeeze the 1m needed.

robbo to digne can enable salah?
otherwise a litle weak on attack but thats because of heavy mids

Have held Robbo from start so that 6.9 - 6.1 so doesn't quite work.

Another option is Wesley for Pukki to enable Salah. Just can't see any fwds providing better value than those 4 premium meds. Augero too rotatable for me, Kane looking sluggish. Salah / Sterling basically playing the same position as Auba.

As a Kelly owner, I'm not sure about the Kelly pick.

Me neither, I think his time is done - but there's little else playable at 4.0 (other than Hanley - who quite frankly may be more likely to score a negative than haul).

VVD, Robbo > Digne, TAA imo
I would also do Son, Greenwood > Trossard, Haller but that's more personal preference

I would do the first option and prefer the threat of TAA to Robbo, but as a Lpool fan, know he is far more susceptible to be rotated (Klopp will like to mix Gomez in for TAA and Matip IMO). Lack of alternatives makes Robbo largely undroppable.

Haven't watched much of Trossard, but that seems a decent option to get rid of fodder.

                                        Am now sitting on:

                                        Pope

                                        Digne, VVD, Zinch, Lundstram, Kelly

                                        Salah, KDB, Sterling, James, Cantwell

                                        Ayew, Haller, Abraham

Think its a little more well-rounded. Robbo and Son have freed up the dollar.

                                    Current WC team.

                                    Ryan Pope
                                    TAA Zinch Digne Pieters Lund
                                    Salah Sterling KDB Mount Cantwell
                                    Haller Barnes Greenwood

I think the team above is solid but looking for your thoughts on whether to upgrade Greenwood to a Pukki/Abraham/Wilson by downgrading at the back?? I just feel there are good options in attack now and wondering if 343 is the way to go?

Ryan, Greenwood > Button, Ayew if possible
But if not, still very strong and g2g

Ya I had Ayew initially to catch his price rise but then just thought he could easily be benched soon and don’t feel he’s strong enough to start every week.
I’d rather one of the more expensive 3 mentioned or Greenwood A’s bench fodder and rotate Cantwell with a DF

U dont need 2 keeps tbh so you could save 0.5 there and TAA>VVD another 0.5 saved. At least u can rotate between those 3 bench guys for the 11th place so on paper it doesnt seem bad, but picking the right one out of the 3 gonna be tricky. If you couls somehow stretch to Robinson or Ayew they could roate better with Cantwell maybe.

I think Wilson could be a great pick over the next few weeks and if he and Bou look poor over the next two, I can easily downgrade to Pukki or Abraham.
Rotating the 3 cheap DF wouldn’t be an issue for me to be honest. I just don’t know if I should downgrade Digne or Zinch. Saving the extra 1mill like you said helps too

yea im stuck with Wilson and Vardy for how long idk, im trapped LOL. Not a bad problem to have I guess but cant get KDB until I downgrade at least one of them but neither given me reason to do so(and I just see Vardy as covering KDB if im honest). Infact some people bringing them in. I like Wilson and he seems under-rated on here this season so far imo, i think he hasnt hit form yet and still returning good. He has good fixtures coming and can only improve surely?

Vardy and Wilson are the two players stopping me wildcarding really, just dont see the point in taking either of them out and it will probably hurt me to do so. I want Barnes though that would be nice
