Meet the Manager #17 – Always Cheating’s Josh Landon

Last season’s finish of 1,224 was Josh Landon’s third within the top 5,000 during his nine-year Fantasy Premier League career.

But the Always Cheating podcast co-host’s campaigns haven’t always looked so easy.

In Joe’s latest Meet the Manager interview he finds out Josh’s strategies for success and how he has learned from his mistakes.

The demons of what he calls “that Yaya Toure and Aaron Ramsey season” loom large in his thinking years on. This has helped him snap up emerging bandwagons quickly, and especially before they become the template.

Other ghosts from the past such as Watford striker Odion Ighalo are also revealed during Josh and Joe’s chat about how psychology affects Fantasy managers’ decisions.

As listeners to Josh’s podcast will know, the eye test is crucial to his decision making. After all, the best manager to trust is often ourselves, as Josh describes how he navigates his way through the noise of FPL content, most notably on social media.

Latest football trends, which defenders to select and the ability to spot when a Fantasy game is “throwing a bone” are also explored in detail during this latest episode of a series that began last season to focus on the thoughts of managers with a stellar track record of success.

The chat with Josh is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

It is also available on Soundcloud and through other notable podcast outlets. Embedded versions of these are also available below.

Not totally sure about that, but watch out for Muriqi tonight - massive lump of a striker who will try and bully England's defence - doing well in Turkish league and looked a handful against the Czechs at the weekend.

Crazy that Kosovo haven't lost a game of football in almost 2 years. I'm expecting a tough game.

Will look out for Muriqi, thanks.

WC after a disastrous 2 weeks...

Don't have it in me to not have an LFC attacker in the side so I've sacrificed Sterling for KdB and managed to get Son/Aguero with spare cash.

Any thoughts before I press the button?

    Pope (Henderson)

    TAA Digne Soyuncu (Kelly, Lundstram)

    Salah Son KdB Cantwell (Dendoncker)

    Pukki Aguero (Greenwood)

Looks fine although I wouldn't drop Sterling

I don't know how to avoid taking him out, that's the problem I have got.

Playing catch up now and have bad FOMO with Aguero and KdB :-S

Maybe Aguero for Firmino... Who to take out for Sterling though?!

I've dropped Salah. That may not be sensible either
Was planning on Firmino but real risk he gets benched this gw (when I'd def want him playing) with Brazil game tomorrow

So essentially it is one of Salah or Sterling isn't it, if you want KdB and Aguero in?

It's doable, but requires sacrifice everywhere else esp premium defenders. e.g.

                    Pope
                    Matip 4.5 4.5
                    Sterling KDB Salah Cantwell
                    Aguero Haller Barnes

                    4m Lundstram 4.5m mid 4m def

Wouldn’t want Son this week - go Pepe. Spurs have scored 16 goals against Palace in the last 12 head to head. 1-0 best guess - it normally is.

Watford is juicy and he’s playing really advanced. Lovely fixtures going forward.

Fair point. I am trying to build a core side though that I don't have to tinker with too much, which is always my downfall!

Pepe could be a nice differential.

Zinchenko to play LW in games sterling is rotated for anyone :O can’t think of anyone else in the squad who has played that role. Would be perfect with mendy coming back no?

Mahrez more likely - started on the left against Brighton last day of the season, although Pep moved things round once they fell behind.

I'm pretty sure it lasted till they fell behind on 20 whatever minutes, so yeah not long, then Bernardo moved more central with Sterling left, Mahrez right. Pep isn't going to play Sterling every game tho, so he needs to find a solution.

Why you so obsessed with Jimenez?

B for me, Lanzini is a good option but not sure on Jimenez unless you're a Wolves fan and, like me with Liverpool, let your heart rule your head haha

Please detach yourself from last season's points

Europa is clearly affecting Wolves. Bournemouth's attack isn't the flat track bully of last season. Both have clear cheaper options who've clicked with their teams this season and have good fixtures

When Wolves find their feet again (or drop out of Europa), their assets will most likely return to what we knew them for last season. Wilson is still Bournemouth's talisman and will come good when Bournemouth impresses again... But you're betting on two hopeful situations and also convincing yourself that the following will ALL become Mitrovic-like: Haller, Pukki, Barnes, Abraham. Heck, you could push funds a bit with your other moves and get Vardy if you refuse to trust these guys

This is my view on things long term but struggling to see past the short term wins that everyone seems to be enjoying in my leagues with the likes of Pukki etc in there. I think he will drop off a cliff personally. Norwich can't keep playing their expansive football if it doesn't get results and keep conceding goals the way they do surely?

You will have transfers to move if Pukki stops firing. You will also have options to move to if Pukki stops firing

Also, your competition who's enjoying the short-term wins will also have transfers to move to other options if Pukki stops firing

There's a line between patience and stubbornness, and being on the wrong side of that line hurts ranks

Even those who had Mitrovic or Moura last season got some benefits and then moved 'em on when they fell off their cliffs. I did something similar with Rashford. It's 38 GWs with one FT per GW, one FH and two WCs anyway... Except if you're in a zombie-team league or draft league

Well in the leagues I am in, it seems like absolutely essential, given that I haven't had him and everyone else has haha

I broke two personal FPL rules to get him for GW5:

                  1. No sideways moves: Zinch to Ota to raise 0.1
                  2. Don't sell an OOP in-form midfielder: Martial to KDB

Add a -4 to this and that's how essential I consider him to be

With people sacrificing terrific value Liverpool defenders, and missing out on good value midfielder players like Martial, James, and Mount, I don't think it's that cut and dry. He is expensive, and you are unlikely to captain.

He will get a lot of points, but will it be enough to offset the sacrifice? Probably... but he's not as essential as people make out imo.

This is why I went without him for 4 GWs

But there's the problem of ownership. Few people capped him but just owning him was keeping them at par with or above me, and that's the relative nature of FPL. You'd need your (mid + the other option with the funds) to match or beat (him + the cheaper option others have). Added to this mix is the S + S royalty, from whom it is difficult to deviate and cap other players, so even the other option won't be capped as often as you try to convince yourself you will... Meaning KDB's overall points count counter the gain you get from capping Son/Pepe on the odd week

It's a fine balance, can swing either way and depends on timing. I just feel safer on the KDB side now

Essential? Probably not. I suspect, however, that KDB could outpoint Kane, Aguero and Auba this year. Good value.
