Scoutcast Episode 305 – Searching for the missing FPL template

Fantasy Premier League managers are feeling particularly lost at the moment.

The template, of premium players and cheap assets alike, is simply not delivering. Arrows are turning red for most.

Has the FPL template disappeared? Or, is it there but so poorly performing that we can’t even see it.

In this latest Scoutcast episode Joe, Neale and Karam attempt to find this absent  FPL template.

A change at the back is needed, according to Neale, while Karam looks at the heavy hitter let downs and Joe proposes some new faces to spark the existing, template back to life.

Along the way they attempt to find this year’s ‘Jiménez’ and realise they don’t have far to look.

Manchester City rotation also tops the bill, as the crew look to decipher Pep Guardiola’s latest team sheet clues.

Elsewhere, Joe takes his turn to choose a differential, Neale reveals the best teams for clean sheets and another smooth week for FPL’s world number one also comes under scrutiny.

There’s still time for the trio’s transfer and captain plans to be unveiled as they hope the controversial template can finally deliver.

Unless it was from gameweek 1-3 when I got hammered by a horror start by not having 'the template'
A good start is half the work - I will be playing it safe at the start next year.

A good start is half the work is a myth. Why do points in gw 1-3 count more than the rest of the season?

A sterling hatrick etc at the start.
I still have not recovered from by bad start at least 60-70 points behind most on here.

Think you overestimate ranks on here. PLenty between 500k and 1.5m I guess and a few even worse off.

Plus if you are careful and the start you will not shoot up the ranks, but more than likely will not lose ground on the consistently active managers.

Having a shocker. How does Son + Saka > DSilva + Maddison for a hit sound?

Always try and avoid hits when possible. Could just do it over the next two weeks and keep my 4 points.

Sounds like a sensible hit but I would be prepared for dsilva rotation. A half decent first sub would be wise.

Cheers boys. These two comments are exactly what’s getting me in a pickle though, haha.

I’d rather Silva than Maddison this week, but if he’s rested I’ll have Saka as first sub who I’m not sure will keep playing.

Making both moves my first sub is either Diop or Soyuncu, whoever I decide not to play, which I’d be happier with as a fall back.

LEI Xg second worst in the league, Vardy Xga90 0.34, compared to 0.8 last season, points unsustainable.

If you're a stat man here it is:

Vardy averages 170 pts per year. Rashford averages 90pts per year.

Tielemens and Maddison are top 5 for through balls, Maddison is 3rd for crosses, and Vardy is tied for 4th in goals (two behind Tammy). LEI as a whole have played VERY VERY well + played CHE, Man U, Spurs, and Pool so far. Vardy doesn't need 5 chances to get a goal, he's extremely efficient.

That is not how they dress it up though. They go on about 'underlying stats' as if they are the main factor is telling whether a player will do well. Then if it does not work they are snookered and claim others who do well despite the holy grail of 'underlying stats' are exceptions - therefore 'stat busters'.
Rarely is the acutal accuacy of the type of shots discussed for example. Or a players body language etc.

I've been talking about the importance of the often disregarded 'ear test' alot this season, as opposed to stats. Also speaking alot about posiitioning and body language.

Underlying stats though are important, espeially expected stats used by real life clubs and us fantasy managers alike.

Been very useful to many who get top ranks over many seasons.

I assume you mean 'eye test' - actually watching the games?
I suppose there is an 'ear test' of sorts as well where you can listen to the whole fantasy community of influencers move towards a certain direction and copy each other? 😀

Underlying stats are important in a sense, but should not be solely relied upon,
Back when Paul Rideout was a decent fantasy football pick and you had to register your picks by touch tone phone.
The only info people had was by watching the games.
I feel the 'old ways' have being lost in the 'underlying stats' 'expected goals' info overload.

Yep. Picked up Pep shouting at Sterling to stay wide prior to Mendy being back through that.

Stats are great....eyes are great... but pays to keep an ear out too 😉

I listen to a lot of games as I'm in Canada and we don't always get the live feeds. I find the 'ear' test can be more helpful at times as the commentators are much more descriptive.

I have to say I disagree with underlying stats being on the same level as eye/ear test. I believe that they are nice to affirm what you see or ear on the pitch but other than that I don't use them much. Tadic completely took me off them and as a Vardy fan and owner (for years) if I relied on stats I'd never have drafted him in. Of course I understand these are mostly exceptions to the rule but I haven't found stats to be as consistent as other methods.

reminds me of the joke about the Indian chief putting his ear on the railway line and saying: "Buffalo come".

When asked how he knows, he said: "Sticky ear"

What do people reckon is the best midfield differential for the next 3 GWs?

Some I'm thinking about right now, with money no issue:

    Richarlison/Siggy
Martial/James (these two play in each other's best spots however)
CHO (on top of a CHE doubleup w/ Mount and Abraham?)
    Dilva/Mahrez
Alli/Lamela (if Tot can get their ducks in order)

    Any other?

David Silva is reaaaally tempting me right now. He hauls whenever City wins and he gets good minutes, which is setting up well for this Villa game.

Yes Everton and Tottenham assets are not poplar atm, but shouldnt we get on them before they start hauling and bandwagon forms?

Richarlison's free role up top looks really refreshing for Everton and Tottenham had some swagger against red star. Yes I know early days but looks encouraging for both sides if they can maintain momentum.

I remember it very differently from you haha Richarlison did me very well at the beginning last year

The old spurs wouldve struggled against Red Star I think, but its more of a monitor and see I guess.

There's too much of "i want to see players do well before I get them" and half the time its too late when a team starts doing well. Just trying to spot the upward trending teams and players early, because no way Everton and Tottenham will struggle for the entire season

    Off-topic, just a question.
If you were a Saints fan coming to the Friday game, would you join in with the Leicester support in paying tribute to Vichai in the 60th minute? Raising scarfs, that sort of thing?
Obviously a minute's silence before the game is compulsory, but do you think going further than that is over the top, or is it appropriate?
Context, we lost our greatest owner to a heart attack a few years back.

Despite the hype of Lundy, think Rico with his setpieces/chance creation will be the better pick to play this week.

Lundy truly deserves all the hype. He's the top scoring fpl defender ffs

So how many people woke up this morning thinking ' what was I thinking getting Auba over Sterling, I need Raz back in my life'

    1. Salah’s Sonnet
      • 12 Years
      4 years, 5 months ago

Lol certainly not me? What reasons are there to think such a thing? Sterling has three goals and one assist since GW 1, Auba has 6 goals one assist since GW 1.

Arsenal look pony last few games and city are winding up to some good form again, Mendy now takes the flank so Raz can cut inside more

But Mendy isn’t gonna start every game, likely not even this weekend along with Sterling. Arsenal can switch it on for all we know this GW and Auba is assured, nailed, and on pens.

Sterling will play this weekend and i think Mendy will be pretty much nailed from now on

Will he though? How can we possibly know that?
I really don’t think Mendy is nailed at all, all just assumption and only Pep knows, and he doesn’t even know half the time.

peps statement about sterlings regeneration being amazing makes me think he will use him again at the weekend, and besides it was only tuesday and not wednesday or thursday.

of course not 100% about mendy but i think i am going to get him in regardless , i think he will play the majority of the games from now on and i'm going to have a decent bench cover to accomodate for when he is dropped...i doubt he will do many cameos

im really torn about Sterling tbh....i was so convinced by my auba switch a few weeks back and the defeat to SHU and last night has just thrown it up in the air! do you prefer son over sterling after the liverpool game?

When I was a kid for years I alternated between Coventry City home games and AP Leamington ( used to play in the old Southern League and then founder members in The Conference) and enjoyed the non league games as much as the the old First Division games. I went regularly to Cov games until the kids arrived. It was very affordable then and I am sorry to say there is little incentive to attend any matches live now when there is so much coverage on TV. Also the days are gone when I want to sit freezing my knackers off outside in mid winter.
