Pro Pundits

Why I’m considering a triple-up on Sheffield United’s impressive defence

In Tom Freeman’s second Pro Pundits article for Fantasy Football Scout, the five-time top 1k finisher talks Sheffield United, Theo Walcott, Liverpool v Manchester City and this week’s captaincy, as well as bringing us his Gameweek review and team reveal.

In pre-season, I wrote a Hot Topic on Sheffield United’s approach, suggesting Jack O’Connell (£4.6m) and Enda Stevens (£5.1m) should be on our Watchlists.

As an Aston Villa fan, I’d seen first-hand how good they are in the Championship. Following our play-off final victory in May, Jack Grealish (£5.9m) was interviewed by pundit for the day Chris Wilder, and told him: “Your boys were the best team we’ve played this season”. It’s hard to argue otherwise.

By the time Gameweek 1 had arrived, my selections had changed but my thoughts on the Blades remained the same: that they’d be a team pushing for a top-half finish. Both Dean Henderson (£4.7m) and John Lundstram (£4.8m) were installed in my squad, and what an impact they’ve made.

Before this season, Lundstram had only scored two goals since the start of the 2018 calendar year. Against Burnley, he had two by half-time. Has there ever been a better Fantasy Premier League budget asset? Probably not.

Their recent performances have made me consider tripling on them from Gameweek 13, with a favourable run of fixtures ahead:

Stevens, John Fleck (£4.8m) – who like Lundstram, looks like he’s been given a bit more license to push forward recently – and Lys Mousset (£4.9m) are all under consideration, but the defensive triple-up is what I’m currently leaning towards. This is a team with the joint-best defence in the league, they’re yet to lose a game by more than one goal and they have only conceded 37 shots on target all season, which is only bettered by Liverpool and Chelsea.

Lundstram’s 21-point haul, combined with 12 points apiece from Martín Montoya (£4.5m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.9m), contributed towards my Gameweek 11 score of 73 points, which has seen my overall rank rise to 15,827.

Re Theo Walcott (£6.2m), you can read more about my thought process behind the move in last week’s Hot Topic. How do I feel about it now? A little frustrated.

He was hauled off on 67 minutes against Spurs, despite Alex Iwobi (£5.8m) playing his poorest game in an Everton shirt, and now has 14 shots without scoring this season – only Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m), Andreas Pereira (£5.0m), Miguel Almirón (£5.8m), Felipe Anderson (£6.8m), David McGoldrick (£5.4m) and Ross Barkley (£5.6m) have had more without finding the back of the net.

A few moments for Walcott stood out – he almost registered an assist on a couple of occasions – but his average position and poor final ball are a concern. I’ll no doubt give him a second chance against Southampton and Norwich City but again, I’ll be monitoring his and Everton’s performance carefully. With no André Gomes (£5.3m) for the foreseeable future, I think they could lack a player capable of dictating play from deep and controlling games, but let’s see.

Sunday’s game between Liverpool and Manchester City has the potential to be a classic, and I can’t wait to see what Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have in store for us tactically. The Citizens have issues in defence, and you can see the Reds pressing hard, high up the pitch, trying to force them to make errors. I see a score draw but you can make a case for either side winning.

In Gameweek 12 I’ll likely roll a transfer, despite the temptation to turn Montoya into Çağlar Söyüncü (£4.8m). This is largely because I have an eye on Gameweek 13 when I won’t have a playing keeper (Henderson is ineligible to face parent club Manchester United), and two transfers will give me a bit more flexibility in my choices.

In terms of captaincy, it’s Jamie Vardy (£9.4m) – again. He scored his tenth Premier League goal of the season against Crystal Palace on Sunday and is scoring at a rate that would surpass the 24 he racked up in Leicester City’s title-winning season.

Here’s a nice stat: since Brendan Rodgers first took charge, Vardy is averaging 7.43 FPL points per match. With only Aston Villa and Norwich conceding more shots than Arsenal this season, I see it being a long 90 minutes for the Gunners, in what could be a defining moment for Unai Emery.

Also, a quick word on Wolves. I’ve been pretty down on them in recent weeks due to a lack of creativity going forward, but it was great to see a player I talked up in pre-season, Diogo Jota (£6.1m), back to his best at the weekend. It was a match where he did everything but score. For anyone who likes Wolves and can’t afford Raúl Jiménez (£7.2m), Jota could be a good shout.

Here’s a look at his shot locations from the Emirates, which is encouraging:

This is how I’ll likely line up heading into Gameweek 12, barring any injuries between now and Friday.

Thanks for reading… until next time.

Kept CS against Arsenal and conceded a mere Goal against Pool. They will keep CS's against many teams imo.

Even without the additional striker last season he was taken off around 60/70 minutes mark too many times for my liking.
Prefer Maupay in that price range. Mousset can be a nice cheap punt too

      McGinn to a cheapo
KDB to Sterling, I don't know where you could get the extra money to do that, possibly Maddison to Tielemans or Perez.

All great options mate, I have Tielemans and Soyuncu and Vardy do cart get Maddison, but think I may to Mount to Martial this week, one tactic could be to get Martial initially as United have the fixtures over the next few then it’s an easy downgrade to the others if necessary?

    Hello geniuses!

I'm having a bit messy team and would love to hear your comments on my tinkering.

    My team

    4.0/Pope
    Taa/Frederics/Rico/Lundy/Tomori
    Salah/KDB/Mount/Guendouzi/Cantwell
    Abraham/Kun/Vardy

Formation: I've forced myself to play 4-3-3 because two weak mids. That's something needs fixing, specially because so many players are not secure starters.

I try find longer term replacements for these players:

Fredericks - got him in back 2 gw, just before Zabalette reborn as a starting footballer. What a mistake.
Kun - maybe keep this week (and as Liverpool fan) and hate outcoming what ever they are
Salah - many people switched to Mane. There is only 0.3m price difference, so probably keep him as differential and hope he get his form back.
Gendouzi/Cantwell - I'd like to ditch them for better options before December when wide bench is needed.
Mount - waiting for news and probably keep over ib even if he doesn't play this GW.

Any thoughts anyone? Have 2ft and 0.0itb. It would be ideal to have 2ft also during ib.

I am hoping for the same with Salah.
I would consider getting more Leicester in with their form and fixtures right now.
      Fredericks to Soyuncu.
Mid (whichever works cost wise) to Tielemans or Maddison. Not sure price wise if Kun to Jiminez would be needed to fund that so maybe just Fredericks this week and move two next gameweek.
Hold for Mount as it didn't look bad.

So this 'pro pundit' will be tripling up on SHU defence from GW13. No mention of one of his defenders being ineligible that GW. Writing a whole article on a treble up when the reality is that it will be a double up and he will be down to 10 players in GW13

Fair, I stopped reading at 'Theo Walcott' thinking he had started on a different topic. That part came below that.

Anyway, the point stands. He said: "Their recent performances have made me consider tripling on them from Gameweek 13, with a favourable run of fixtures ahead: MUN wol etc". You're not really tripling up from GW13 if one of your defenders is ineligible.

Maybe it's pedantic but isn't that half the point of this site? We're all looking minor details here and there trying to improve our fantasy teams.

Firstly it's not a triple up from GW13. Secondly they'll be without their goalie which obviously will disrupt the defence. Just look at the state of WH defence after Flappy got injured.

Okay, just catching up on this.

Sorry if I didn't make things clear in the article. Probably best to read it in full, but whatever, if I own three Sheffield United players in GW13, ineligible or not, I'm still tripling on them, no? Then there's the next six fixtures I highlighted where three will be involved.

Also, comparing West Ham losing Fabianski, to Sheffield United losing Henderson probably deserves a post in itself, which I haven't got time for right now.

    1. Tempestic
      • 5 Years

Idk where it originated from but I believe its just the team u have when u sort out ur team for next week immediately after deadline before any transfers. Something like that.

      1. Evasivo
        • 13 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

Yeah I guessed it was the team you select at midday Saturday once game updates. But wondering what Bus means....
The guys you send on the bus to the ground?

On the last scoutcast I think Jonty said something about u never know when u could get hit by a bus (implying its good to at least sort ur team out after deadline just in case?) but irdk if that was a joke or not. 😛

Park the bus, in other words stick 10 men behind the ball and challenge the opposition to break them down and score.

No attacking intent, just there to frustrate the opposition.

Either that or it’s a group of people who service public transportation vehicles.

Sorting your team ASAP after the update on a Saturday morning for the following GW incase you were to get hit by a bus and not be in a position to sort it later in the week...

Sort it to the best you can, incase life gets in the way later in the week.

It’s from the Always Cheating podcast, the bus team is the team you will be playing if you get hit by a bus at some point in the week and are therefore unable to make any transfers due to the bus wiping you out.

Allows me to get Robbo in after they play City. It would have been a hit either way and Boly may drop in price and Cantwell already did. This was the best way for me to avoid getting priced out. I know that t's not ideal and that it's risky.

What if something else changes in your team? It's an unnecessary risk just to save a bit of tm value.

It's not just a bit of team value. It's the key to getting Robbo in next week without another hit.

It's still risky just as I said before.

what degree of certainty do you need of a liverpool clean sheet and/or robinson attacking return in order for the hit to repay itself vs your first sub?

It's a long term move. It's not just about the next game week. The hit will pay itself back in a couple of weeks. I don't where your going with this. I'm not even sure I understand what you mean.

There is a chance that one of your other players(or robbo) gets injured this week, and you might not need a hit to free up funds next week though.

Good stats, passing eye test recently and has been VERY unlucky to not come away with returns recently. When he goes on a streak he’s brilliant to own.

Bettered mane/salah for shots in the box and penalty box touches at times this season.

Catch him right and he is far from garbage.

3 goals in 17 games despite performing well generally. has some ground to make up to even match the 12 league goals he scored last season. blocks other liverpool options who outperformed him last year and are outperforming him this year.

streaks are random, variance - i dont really believe in them.

    If I did this:
Ota, Mount, King > Willems, Donck, Vardy (-4)

Would that be too bold? Pretty much means a 4-3-3 like this:

    TAA, Rico, Lunds, Willems (Lowton)
    Mane, Sterling, KDB (Cantwell, Donck)
    Vardy, Jim, Tammy

I'd love to know. I think Norwich were so flat v Brighton that he may at least get some decent minutes, 30 plus. It's a 6 pointer, surely they need to get back to doing what they did at the start of the season especially at home, attacking.
