Play safe or take risks? The Gameweek 12 dilemma I face as I aim for the top 5k

FPL Family’s Sam Bonfield is gunning for a spot in the top 5,000 in Gameweek 12 and guides us through her current strategy in our latest Pro Pundits article.

Fantasy Football is all about taking the rough with the smooth and Gameweek 11 was definitely the latter for me.

When Caglar Soyuncu (£4.8m) gave Leicester the lead against Crystal Palace this weekend I was not a happy manager, having made the decision to leave him on my bench as first sub.

However, the news of Harry Kane’s (£10.8m) omission from the Spurs squad with a virus meant that Soyuncu’s 14 points came off my bench.

With Soyuncu languishing on my bench, my rank would have dropped from 14k to 20k. However, after his auto-substitution, the 80 Gameweek points I achieved in total meant that I found myself inside the coveted top 10k.

Now sitting at 7,985, there are two possible strategies.

The first is to default to a protective stance, bring in the well-owned players and play it safe to protect that top 10k finish. However that’s just not me and isn’t the way I want to play the game.

So onwards to the next target: the top 5k. In order for that to be achievable, there needs to be an element of risk and getting on the right differential players before they hit a purple patch.

With two free transfers heading into Gameweek 12, there are a number of players who I am considering changing. Having transferred Nicolas Otamendi (£5.3m) out for Diego Rico (£4.3m) ahead of Gameweek 11, I already have £1.4m in the bank in which to upgrade my squad.

This season I have been really stubborn where Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) is concerned. I truly believe that over the course of the season, Sadio Mane (£12.0m) and Salah will counter each other out in terms of goals and Fantasy points scored.

But Salah’s problematic ankle is making it very hard to stay with him now, especially with him being substituted early on Saturday with two points, while Mane went on to score 12. The price difference between the two players is now down at £0.3m at the time of writing and before long it seems likely that they will be level in terms of cost.

Having already lost £0.2m in team value by holding Salah, I am starting to believe that now might be a good time to transfer him out for Mane. This would also free up a little more in terms of budget to make some other, more differential, changes to break in to the top 5k.

Callum Hudson-Odoi’s (£5.9m) position in the Chelsea starting line-up seems to have become a problem. He is a player that I really like and who adds another dimension to the Chelsea team, but as a Fantasy manager, him coming off the bench in the last two Gameweeks for zero and one-point returns is frustrating.

At £5.9m, with potentially £1.7m in the bank if I do the Salah to Mane swap, there are a lot of good options available.

I also have Todd Cantwell (£4.8m), who I would like to transfer out, and Mason Mount‘s (£6.9m) possible injury could benefit Hudson-Odoi’s minutes – so I might lose the Norwich midfielder instead.

My transfer options this week include Anthony Martial (£7.6m). Martial’s return from injury ahead of a lovely run of fixtures for Manchester United against Brighton, Sheffield United and Aston Villa should see good points returns for him and at only 6.5% ownership, he has the potential to be a great differential.

However, his injury record makes me wary of owning him. Other options that would be differentials include a sideways move to Christian Pulisic (£7.2m) at 7.3% owned; however he played Champions League football on Tuesday and so there is potentially a risk of rotation there this week.

Another option I am strongly considering is Harvey Barnes (£5.9m). Only selected by 1% of managers, he is the height of a differential and as such could be a great option for me in the push to move up through the overall ranks.

Leicester’s fixtures look excellent until Gameweek 18 and therefore now Barnes seems to have nailed down a starting place, I think he could be an excellent pick.

Wolves are a whole team that are a focus for my transfer thoughts.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side started the season poorly with a European hangover and a small squad who seemed to struggle to keep up with the pace of both Europa League and Premier League football.

In recent Gameweeks, we have seen a resurgence in the Wolves team and as such they are a side I definitely want to bring in a player from. I would ideally like to own, in my opinion, the golden boy of Fantasy Premier League from last season: Raul Jimenez (£7.2m).

However, as long as Kane recovers from his virus, I am happy with my front three. This means that I am looking at a Wolves midfield that are all differentials, with Leander Dendoncker (£4.4m) the highest owned at 9.6% – although this is mostly as a result of his price point.

For me, I’m looking at Joao Moutinho (£5.3m). Having watched him over the last couple of Gameweeks, he has definitely passed the eye test.  Whilst he has only registered two assists so far this season, the heatmaps look promising for more attacking returns, as do his xA stats which sit at 1.25. He is a player who I am definitely looking at as I look to board the Wolves train ahead of a nice run of fixtures.

Ahead of Friday’s deadline, I am likely to use both of my free transfers.

However, I am waiting until Wolves play their Europa League fixture on Thursday evening and for news on Kane’s health before finalising the transfers.

At the time of writing, Salah to Mane and Hudson-Odoi or Cantwell to Moutinho look like being my preferred options.

His record against Liverpool is pretty good so I'd hold and I certainly wouldn't be selling for Deulefeu. I'd be more inclined to wait a week and maybe do something like Aguero to Vardy and KDB to Mane.

    Which 2 to drop? Stuck!
    TAA Soy Lund tomori Rico

Liverpool will concede so that means TAA has to get attacking returns to justify place right? I've benched 15 and 20 points last two weeks due to these five defenders and picking wrong 3 hence need some responses. Thanks

    1. AllINeedIsCoffee
      • 9 Years

TAA is getting attacking returns and his upcoming fixtures are great after city so you can't drop him.

      You can't drop Lundstram.

You can't drop Soy, pretty much mandatory play after the Arsenal game. You'd really want to play one of Rico or Tomori for that game.

Tomori is going to be warming the bench and is too expensive considering you got Rico. You shouldd op Tomori and if you have to drop 1 then it's rico but it doesn't really make sense.

        Thanks for the thoughts man

So if I have to drop 2 your saying tomori and Rico? I'm actually gonna sell tomori next week for a second Shu defender. I just have this feeling need bourn may be 0-0 and Rico will haul again and beat TAA. So for me it's TAA or Rico but gotta go TAA right.thx

I see. This week I'd play TAA, Rico and Tomori, if I wanted to play it safe. I'd strongly consider Lundstram over Tomori if I'd be feeling frisky.

Can you spare a moment to figure what you'd fancy doing in my position?

    Pope (Button)
    Lund - TAA - Otamendi - (Soy - Pieters)
Salah - Sterling - KDB - Mount (Cantwell)
    Pukki - Ings - Abraham

0m itb but 2 FT. Most obviously one is Otamendi -> Rico to free up 1.0m (or someone like Kelly at 4.1m) and play Lund & Soy. Assuming I go that route, which option do you fancy to fix the issues with my team? I consider it an issue not having Leicester assets like Maddison and Vardy and having Pukki is quite an issue, especially after next GW. I don't mind Ings staying in with his upcoming fixtures. Mount injury is a bit of a concern too. Probably keeping Sterling for possibility of Mané swap but its an option for sure.

    a) KDB -> Maddison & Pukki -> Vardy (next gw OR wait with Otamendi to Rico for next GW as I have exact funds)
    b) Pukki -> Jiminez
    c) Mount -> Maddison & Pukki -> Jiminez (next gw)
    d) Mount -> Maddison & KDB -> Martial (then next GW Pukki -> Vardy & wait with Otamendi to Rico for -4)
    e) Something different, if so, what?

Mount transfer might be a bit pessimistic and short term thinking due to his injury but nevertheless its worth considering the options. Thank you so much! 🙂

Williams I'm assuming. Yes, that's one option I'm taking if I need the extra 0.3m instead of Rico but if I don't need them then I'm going for Rico.

      Keep mount
      Keep kdb
Keep sterling (for now) if you want mane and I'd be tempted to do Salah for mane as city whilst have tough fixtures on paper are still city and will beat most teams.

I'd like to say otamendi out defo and pukki to vardy tho you can't afford that in 2 moves hmmm... Could be done in three if u downgraded Ings too I think. Perhaps just Otamendi this week Rico and then two moved next week to get vardy. If not I'd prob just accept I can't really afford vardy and just get pukki to Jimmy

Tried getting advice on this yday without luck so I’ll summarise

Palace have a prolonged run of good fixtures on paper coming up and Sheffield United also look to be good assets at the back

Who offers better value for their price point, Guita or PvA?
Considering Guita or Henderson as my keeper on wildcard
Is pva good investment at that price? He’d replace Digne
    Cheers

Lost patience with PVA and sold him this week, as much as I love him as an asset Palace seem very lack luster. Fixtures do turn soon but I prefer the LIV double up so no room for PVA with value options like Lundstram & Rico about. Also prefer Henderson to Guita myself.

Yeah that’s definitely a concern, however we know that Son is a streaky player I just wonder if two goals tnite sparks a run like last year where he was ruthless!! Therefore I think I’m willing to risk the possible benching or no show 1st week back for international break.

Is Willems the Newcastle defender of choice?

I'd say so. He gets in forward positions when he can.

Was close to 2 assists against West Ham. Is he nailed though?

Not nailed, place holder until Ritchie gets fit imo.

Nope he's nailed. Richie will not replace willems. No way Bruce drops a player who's playing out of his skin.

Ritchie is by far the best dead ball taker at the club, corners, free kicks, pens, the lot. When match fit he is back in, with Willems most likely to miss out.

    A) Jim, Salah, Son, Robertson, Soy/Tomori
    B) Firmino, Mane, Son, Soy, Tomori
    C) Laca, Salah, Son, Soy, Tomori
    D) Kane, Salah, Martial, Soy, Tomori

Was set on D. .. But Kane no show today and Son scoring a brace makes me lean towards A or B. It's doing my head in.

Already got TAA, so Robertson would be a double up on Pool defensively

    Pope
    Chilwell Rico Lundstram Robertson
    Mount KDB Sterling Salah

    1. Salah >> Mane
    2. Robertson >> TAA
    3. Pope >> Ramsdale

    Ryan
    TAA Alonso Dunk
    Sterling Mane KdB Dilva Mount
    Abraham Deulofeu

    Button Soyuncu Lundstram Wickham

Is this move the best I can do this week? I feel Vardy has the potential to be a rank killer...

Alonso, Dilva, Wickham > Willems, Hayden, Vardy (-4)

Absolutely love to see people ditching Sterling and Salah for hits.

Also, those holding KDB over Sterling because they have value tied up in him is complete nonsense.. always go for the explosive asset.

So if you have to ditch kdb or raz, who would be?

        KDB obviously

Its not nonsense when you bought KDB for a bargain and can easily bring back sterling for the same price you got him...

Getting rid of sterling or Salah for a hit is nonsense though

kdb can patch sterlings bigegst haul tho anyway, they have the same ceiling imo and kdb more consistant. Sterling in theory is the better captain pick tho maybe

sterling has to get a hatti to beat kdbs highest, and sterling has been bad in the pl this season.
kdb can get 2 assist and max baps any game
