Grealish back on the FPL radar after eye-catching return from injury

Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Conor Hourihane (£5.7m), Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Jack Grealish (£5.9m), Hourihane
  • Bonus: Hourihane x3, Frederic Guilbert (£4.4m) x2, Matt Targett (£4.4m) x1

The final match of Gameweek 13 was the story of Conor Hourihane‘s (£5.7m) dead-ball expertise and Newcastle United’s inability to deal with it.

A non-descript game seemed to have all the hallmarks of a goalless draw in the first half an hour, with the Magpies’ trademark backs-to-the-wall approach to away fixtures initially working well.

There hadn’t really been a chance of note until Conor Hourihane (£5.7m) struck a superb free-kick past Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) after 32 minutes, with the Irish midfielder turning provider soon after when assisting Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m) from another set-piece situation.

During the international break, we discussed how Villa had struggled at free-kicks and corners with Hourihane out of the side.

For all his limitations as a central midfielder, Hourihane’s dead-ball deliveries do give Villa an extra attacking dimension and they were ultimately the difference between the two sides on Monday.

He could indeed have had another assist late on, had Wesley (£6.0m) not fired at Dubravka from point-blank range.

Dean Smith said of the Ireland international after full-time:

He wasn’t happy when I left him out of the game against Manchester City away and I understand why, but it’s a squad game and I have decisions to make.

I knew we’d spend an awful lot of time defending and today I knew we’d have a lot more of the ball.

He’s answered me back in the best way. He scored against Norwich, he scored against Brighton and he’s scored again today, so I’m really pleased for him.

The Magpies, meanwhile, have conceded from a set play in each of the last three Gameweeks.

No side allowed more headed chances or efforts from set-piece situations in 2018/19 and a change of regime hasn’t improved much, with Steve Bruce’s outfit again joint-bottom for headed opportunities conceded this season and in the bottom seven for attempts from corners and free-kicks conceded.

Indeed, over the last six Gameweeks, no other club has allowed more of either.

This may well be of interest to owners of Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m), with Manchester City up next for Newcastle in Gameweek 14.

Aston Villa assets may not be top of many Fantasy managers’ shopping lists at present, with the Villans third-bottom of our Season Ticker over the next four matches.

There are some appetising matches beyond that, though, and Jack Grealish (£5.9m) and John McGinn (£5.9m) may well be key midfield targets come Gameweek 18.

The returning Grealish, back after a month out, was at the centre of most of Villa’s play on Monday, having more touches than any other player on show.

It was a little ironic that, for all of his creativity and goal threat against the Magpies, his sole attacking return was an assist for a lay-off for Hourihane’s free-kick.

That was his fifth FPL contribution in six starts and the move to a narrow left-wing role from Gameweek 7 has only boosted his appeal.

Grealish is also the most fouled player in the Premier League this season, which, as we’ve seen with Wilfried Zaha (£6.6m) at Crystal Palace, can be a source of Fantasy assists.

Unsurprisingly, it was Grealish who won both of Villa’s free-kicks for the goals.

Smith said of his talismanic midfielder after full-time:

He’s a constant threat and he moves around the pitch really well into positions where people don’t want to come and tackle him.

The opposition get frustrated and two free-kicks against him end up with two goals for us.

Knowing Jack, he’ll be disappointed he hasn’t got on the scoresheet himself.

McGinn, the highest-owned player in the Monday night game, blanked for the fifth time in six Gameweeks but he too was a threat, if only in the last quarter of an hour when the game opened up.

The Scotland international fired narrowly wide from inside the box as the match entered stoppage time before striking the woodwork with the final kick of the game.

The fit-again Tom Heaton (£4.5m) and Villa kept their first clean sheet since Gameweek 5, meanwhile, although one look at the short-term fixture list will deter many from reconsidering the Villans’ defensive options for now.

Newcastle themselves have a tricky double-header against City and Sheffield United coming up and will likely not appeal to FPL bosses until Gameweek 16.

The Magpies had scored six goals in the three previous Gameweeks but five of those strikes were by defenders; not a sustainable source of goals, you’d think.

The occasionally brilliant Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m) was by some distance the pick of United’s players, registering more than three times as many take-ons as anyone else at Villa Park and testing Heaton with a curling, 46th-minute effort.

With a continued lack of support around him, however, attacking returns may be irregular at best, despite his eye-catching trickery.

A Federico Fernandez (£4.4m) header and an Andy Carroll (£5.4m) volley – both of which were saved – were as close as the Magpies came to ruining Heaton’s clean sheet but in truth, Villa looked more likely to score a third than concede a consolation.

Bruce cited the absence of skipper Jamaal Lascelles (£4.4m) as a mitigating factor, saying:

The first half, in particular, we did not do enough with or without the ball. We felt we were harshly done by with two free-kicks, but the way Conor Hourihane has executed them made it a difficult night.

Conor is very good, I have seen it many times and he has the accuracy and power to score. The second one, our defenders have to defend better, too many stood and watched it.

Jamaal Lascelles is our captain and has been playing very well. Last week the defenders were excellent but you are always going to miss your best players.

Thoughts on Ings as a third striker? He has a few very good games coming up and he is in nice form (5 goals in last 7 gw). Could that pay off or I should just ignore Southampton (because it is Southampton)?

I've taken a punt on him as my 3rd striker. Southampton showed a bit of fight against Arsenal which will hopefully carry them forward over the next few weeks.

I have Vardy, Mane, Sterling and KDB though so could only really afford Ings. Happy to see how he does though.

Those three home games look juicy and even Newcastle away isn't necessarily an awful fixture. If you're going 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 then he's a great third striker option ...... as long as he stays fit.

Thats my thinking also, those next 5 fixtures can hardly be any better and he is fixture proof (he alraedy scored against Che, Ars Liv and Tot). So I really think the guy is a real deal just playing for bad team. If I am going to take a punt on him its now. The transfers would be Auba and Mousse(injured) to Vardy and Ings.

Looks good to me. Ings might be on pens too. It's often better to have a big fish from a small pond rather than a mid-range offering from a bigger side. Those old ones amongst us remember Charlie Adams in Blackpool'd relegation season with much fondness.

      He's a fine option.

He just is a bit annoying because he's at an annoying price point and is a forward. I just don't like forwards as much as mids so would rather play 3-5-2.

I know, but just looking at his form and next 5 fixtures makes me very optimistic about that move.

          The front 7 would be:

          Salah KdB Son Madds (Dendoncker)
          Vardy Tammy Ings

        This is a good point.

I'd considered Cantwell > JWP (3-5-2) but Cantwell's goal and performance at the weekend has swayed me to keep him over Connolly.

So I've done Connolly > Ings (and playing 3-4-3).

Can always jump to a 3-5-2 in a few weeks and downgrade Ings to Greenwood and upgrade Cantwell, but would mean 2 transfers.

Thats the thing, his fixtures are great and Mousset is injured so want to do a swap. Auba Mousse to Vardy and Ings. Think that Auba had his chances.

It didn't look good to be honest. I like him and he was delivering for me but if he is out I think Ings is the best replacement. Will wait till deadIine tho.

Have 1.4 ITB and the following for this GW. Should I keep my FT and use 2 next week to get more effective changes or is there something that needs immediate change:

    Pope

    VVD Lundstram Soyuncu Kelly
    Mane KDB Martial
    Auba Vardy Tammy

    Button Hayden Dendoncker Rico

    Thanks!

Hey! What would you do here? Option A and B will give me a benching headache, at least for this week. Will probably downgrade Tomori later, but great fixtures coming up.

    Pope
    TAA Soy Lund Tomori
    Mane Sterling KDB Mount
    Abraham Vardy

    TAA Soy Lund Tomori

A Sterling, Rico > Son, Robbo

Roberto, the gift that keeps giving:

      GW7: C Wilson, King, Aké
      GW8: PVA, Ayew, Kelly, Kouyaté
      GW9: Siggy, Bernard, Rich, Walcott
GW10: Mousset, Stevens (how did Lord Lund manage a blank?)
GW11: Fernández, Clark, Shelvey, Hayden, Joelinton, Willems
GW12: Barnes, Wood, Tarkowski, McNeil, Westwood
GW13: Kane, Son, Moura, Aurier, Alli

I'd say he's right up there with Lord Lund as gifts of the 19/20 season

Not quite true - he makes some outstanding saves but he can't catch a ball for toffee - those punches could send the ball anywhere, including the back of his own net.
Anyway, this week we might be seeing the emergence of 4.0 Martin

To be fair though, over these GWs, those were his saves:

        GW7: 3
        GW8: 1
        GW9: 9
        GW10: 2
        GW11: 6
        GW12: 10
        GW13: 3

I reckon he does save from time to time and can have a good game in which he'll concede only 2 goals XD

        Their defense is SHITE

I somewhat agree. 10 saves against Burnley is a sign that he had 10 cut-outs ahead of him on the pitch, not players

          Burnley, ffs

There's the fact that Norwich just kept a CS with two CBs playing and DMs playing as DMs...

Auba was far from explosive when he was doing well as a striker earlier in the season, and is now hopeful of the same 5 to 9 points range as a winger

Then there's Vardy having a Salah season in so many other squads that can keep your rank low

Coin toss? I'd make the move

          Just do it.

Else you'll keep procrastinating the move.

What has this cost you so far? Money and Points.

Do it, what's worse that can happen? A low ownership player in Auba scoring 2 goals then going on a dry spell again.

That's your worst case scenario, and it's not enough to put me off Auba --> Vardy.

Vardy, Tammy, Lundy, Mane. Those 4 are insurance.

You play with the other 7 players, but you do not touch those. for now at least.

Pukki > Firmino (Have Taa, Mane, cant afford Salah)

Alternative is Pukki to Jiminez bank the difference.

Yep, that's why I'm hesitating. Guess I'll keep track on Salah's ankle situation and if need be, straight swap for Mane.

No Mane, Pulisic, Son or Vardy is a bit risky.

Maybe there is a better transfer you could do. This is still not the best move, even with Mount getting benched. They will all rotate

                  4 years, 4 months ago

That's obvious. It's about who scores more when they do play. Right now that looks like Pulisic hands down.

              Current team:
              (3-5-2)

              Ryan / (Button)
              TAA, Söyüncü, Tomori, (Lundstram, Rico)
              Mane, Salah, Mount, KDB, Tielemans
              Vardy, Abraham (Greenwood)

I got 2FTs and was thinking of changing:

              a) Salah and Mount > Son and Pulisic (1.5 ITB)
              b) Save

Anyone fancy giving me some wildcard suggestions? Reckon I've got something pretty strong here.

              Hendo, Button
              Trent, Lundstram, Soy, Aurier, C.Taylor
              Mane, KDB, Son, Pulisic, Dendoncker
              Vardy, Abraham, Jimenez

              Cheers 😀

Probably Maddison over Pulisic but thats it... I think you'll have benching headaches at the back too

                Looks fine.

Although I doubt you'll want to play Aurier or Taylor so they might as well be Reid + Williams which could help you fund Jimenez > Rashford.

At least that's what I'd be looking for. You have literally 0 differentials in that front 7.

                  Thanks for the reply.

For me, the 'differentialness' of any player is not really that high up the list of things I'm looking for.

I'm also much more comfortable having bench players who can come in for me and score well, especially over the Christmas period. Also, since I'm not planning on wildcarding again until double gameweek season, I need a structure that can last beyond the current setting that Leicester and SHU both have a run of excellent fixtures.

I'm also not convinced Rash is a better option than Jimmy anyway.

                  Appreciate the comment though.

unfortunately, I have a beaching dilemma this week as I imagine many others do!

              Who would you bench...

The Mother of all questions - please help

Who's the best budget striker? looking at the below i think we have 2 seasonal set and forgets, and 1 short term mega punt!

              () means hard fixture
Ive looked 17 GWs in advance (YES 17! we might have 3 special cases here)

              Ayew - Mousset - Ings

              Ayew
              5.1 - 48 pts - 951 mins - NAILED 100% 90 mins mostly - Bonus Point Magnet (11 Points)
              bur/BOU/wat/BHA/new/WHU/sou/nor/ARS --- (mci) --- SOU/SHU/eve/NEW/bha/WAT/bou
16 theoretically good games in the next 17 !!!!!!!!!!!!! (only mci away is the exception)

              Mousset
5.0 - 44 Pts - Injured???? (updates pls) - Never plays a full 90 - 415 minutes played only. (I think he has the highest value/minutes of all players!)
              wol/NEW/nor/AVL/bha/ --- (TOT/mci/liv) --- WHU/ars --- (mci) --- cry/BOU/BHA/avl/NOR/new
13/17 theoretically good games. not a bad shout!

              Ings
              6.0 - 58 pts - Injury prone - amazing short term fixtures - 821 minutes played - 10 BPS not bad!
              WAT/NOR/new/WHA/avl --- (che) --- CRY --- (TOT/lei) --- WOL/cry --- (liv) --- BUR/AVL/whu/NEW/nor

13/17 theoretically good fixtures! for Ings id definitely be interested in the short term though and not 17 GWs for such an injury prone player.
