Who are the best Watford players to consider under Pearson?

Nigel Pearson’s arrival at Watford has triggered a much-needed resurgence at Vicarage Road – but can Fantasy Premier League managers trust their assets just yet?

The former Leicester City manager has been in charge of the Hornets for a month now, which is more than enough time for us to assess the impact he has had.

We will go over recent matches to find out, as a result, whether or not there are any viable options to invest in for Fantasy managers.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who are signed up either on a season-long or monthly Membership can access it in full.

What has Pearson changed?

After experiments with a three-man back-line under Quique Sanchez Flores, Pearson has lined up Watford in a 4-2-3-1 formation in every match so far.

Following his return from injury, Troy Deeney (£6.2m) is leading the line again while Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m) and Ismaïla Sarr (£6.2m) have most often chosen to flank the attacking midfield either side of Abdoulaye Doucouré (£5.6m).

At the back, Kiko Femenía (£4.2m) has started every match at left-back with Craig Cathcart (£4.3m) and Christian Kabasele (£4.3m) the preferred options in central defence, although the latter is now suspended for Gameweek 22 following a Gameweek 21 sending off, his second of the season.

The right-back spot has been less settled, especially with Daryl Janmaat (£4.1m) out injured. In his absence, Adrian Mariappa (£4.2m) has largely deputised although his Gameweek 20 sending off saw Craig Dawson (£4.8m) feature there last time.

Crucially, these team selection decisions have helped Watford drastically improve their fortunes from Gameweek 17 onwards, when Pearson took charge of his first game.

During the last five Gameweeks, they have won all three home games, against Manchester United, Aston Villa and Wolves, proving that they can arguably record a positive result against a range of different teams.

Gameweeks 1 to 16 (left) compared with Gameweeks 17 to 21 (right)

The Hornets only scored nine goals in the first 16 matches of the 2019/20 campaign, a period which saw them managed by three different men, Javi Gracia, Flores and Hayden Mullins.

By contrast, in the last five matches, Pearson’s men have found the net eight times, a drastic improvement.

Assists between the two periods have also risen, from four to five – and from 0.2 per game to 1.0.

The defence has improved too. Goals conceded per game has halved from 1.9 to 0.8 while clean sheets per game have doubled from 0.2 to 0.4.

While the results have been impressive, the question is whether or not they are sustainable – which is where the underlying statistics come in.

In order to do this, we have run comparisons between the first 16 Gameweeks of the season against Gameweeks 17 to 21.

What has happened to Watford’s Goal Threat data?

    Hi lads,

    Thought on this below:

    Ryan (Button)
    TAA Soy Rico Kelly Lund
    Salah KDB Martial Grealish Maddy
    Rashford Vardy Ings

    2FT , 0.3m itb

Hope that the only option is not to burn a transfer.

    Thanks,

Honestly your team is fine. Now unless you want another Pool player then you can shift around. Drop Rash to fund a mid to Mane or a def to Robbo/VVD (can maybe even drop Martial instead for this). Thats what I think.

Would front 3 of Ings DCL alongside Vardy be OK to go with if allows midfield including Salah Mané KDB. ( Grealish Cantwell other 2) and defence with TAA?

Hi guys, looking for more opinions on this:

    Pope - Button
    TAA - Chilwell - Lundstram - Kelly - Rico
    Sterling - KDB - Martial - Moura - Grealish
    Vardy - Jimenez - Greenwood

    2 FT, 1.3 ITB

    A) Moura to Hayden, Greenwood to Ings
    B) Pope to Fabianski
    C) Hold
    D) Other

Despite the fact that I've got 2 transfers and no Liverpool attackers or Ings, I'm leaning more towards holding for this week. It's not like I have any rank of note to protect and I think I want to roll the dice on Lucas Moura a little bit more now that Kane is out. I'm happy to be convinced otherwise though.

With those 5 in midfield, you will have benching issues now that you bring in Ings up front, making it three playable strikers.

Holding means losing 1 ft. It cannot be optimal. When are you planning to use Kelly? You could either downgrade him or upgrade for future purposes. B is also decent option for gw24 now imo. You need to get Liverpool players in also. Sterling to Mane?

      1. Greek Freak
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 2 months ago

Not averse to losing a transfer - the fewer transfers you make, the higher your OR is for tiebreak purposes. I think I got Kelly for 4.0 or 4.1 so it's not like I paid lots of money to get him. If I'm to have a 4.0 defender on the bench it might as well be someone who plays.

Oh Lucas is definitely playing if I don't get Ings. No way would I play Kelly (because of defensive injuries) or Rico (because Bournemouth) over him.

Considering there is 7 million fantasy teams why are the prizes so bad? Its like a blue peter goodie bag. The only decent thing is the TAG watch and its probably cheap and nasty compared to any other TAG.

I know there isnt 7 million unique users but the prizes are lame. Surely first place should win 100k, its not llike they dont make money off fantasy.. you see that ad on your team page.

Near on identical rules, apart from you don’t get TC, BB, FH.

          2 x wildcards
1 x new transfer per week.
          -4 for additional transfers.
All the usual stuff is still there.

first one was still Ljungberg but Arteta already signed, said he will be judging by performance and was sitting in the stands.

It would be Auba I would drop personally. Vardy is a keeper especially with his fixtures and a little rest too. Arsenal will
Improve but I don’t think Auba is better than Vardy and or Mane even though he is slight differential.

Yes but who would be the third? It gets to a point to a point you are ripping your whole squad apart. For me the less moves the better. Jimmy is consistent too.

On a different take, I watched the Arsenal game against Utd. The fact Auba was way out of the left made me feel uncomfortable for him. He needs to be central for him to be the player I think he could be.

Looks like Vardy falling in price tonight according to fpl stats. Presently at -100.2. Hard to understand but as per earlier posts should be good for owners as ownership falling ( provided gets through Villa Caribou tie unscathed!)

I am seriously considering this also. Gomez has meant clean sheets and TAA can be also explosove. Many have TAA and Robbo + Mane/Salah so TC Trent + Salah + Mane shouldn't fail badly. But everything is naturally possible.

    1. Baps hunter
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Probably everyone 😉 but it isn't easy. Salah has only one away goal. Firmino has been decent away. Liverpool has started to keep clean sheets with Gomez. Trent had his super haul not so long ago, yet it may make his life more difficult.

    2. Netley Lucas
      • 8 Years

Yes. Double midfield is best for those who already have them or can get them easily. Double defence is best for the rest.

My analysis is that I have (at great pains) gone out of my way to get a Liverpool triple up with double defence - only to see good players go with the Salah and mane double up.

Interested to also know if people will use their triple captain too

Yes they will. Liverpool with two decent fixtures that are not within 72 hours etc means TC time for the majority of managers imo. People would hope these were not away, but difficult to ask much more.

Yep true and don’t want to wait for that better time in the season that may never come around. Loving the idea of TAA triple C, but perhaps Salah with pens now may be the way forward, cheers

Most of the time when you predict a player to haul, he blanks, that didn't happen with Vardy in the first half of the season. But I am sure from now on, most of the teams will play deep against Leicester. The goals will come from set pieces more. We will not see Vardy's back to back hauls again.

    1. Baps hunter
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Maybe. When other teams noticed how dangerous Pukki is, he was kept with 2 defs snd Cantwell and others started to benefit from that.

Speaking as a spurs fan, we could play deep with a 10-0-0 formation and he would still probably score 2. Astonishingly, there are teams that are even worse at defending than we are.

Or other players will have more space and start to improve, Perez, Maddison and H Barnes for example. Yet Ings and Vardy have been able to continue getting goals.

MCity are pretty safe with this factor and so is Liverpool attack. No team is able to defend against their five best attacking players.

The main reason is the full backs for Liverpool and Mancity. We have seen some regression with Mancity in the abscence of Sane and fit Mendy and Zinchenko this year.

I was all set on selling Aurier, but the more I look, I am not so sure. As bad as he is, he still poses a threat of getting assists, and I bought him at 4.9. I also have TAA, Evans, Lunds, and Kelly. The other options out there are not great. I like Dunk, but I have Ryan and don't want to double up on Brighton defense. I had determined to get Sidibe, but now he has gone up to 5.4. Is he really worth that? Is Everton's defense really that good? Maybe Holgate is an option. I don't know if it is my imagination, but I don't recall a season so lacking quality defenders. Am I missing something?

TAA, Robbo and Lundstram are quality defenders. Doherty and Pereyra (or was it Pereira) also, but expensive.

Yet, I wonder if clean sheets have been rare or hard to predict this season. Alonso being dropped for Emerson means one option less. Is Azpi getting old?

    Current team:
    Hendo (Button)
    TAA, Pereira, Sidibe, Lund, Rico
    Salah, KDB, Maddison, Martial, Traore
    Vardy, Ings, Abraham

    Would you:

    A) Pereira, Martial, Abraham to Soy, Mane, 4.6 forward like Long or Greenwood

    B) Rico, Martial, Abraham to Robertson, Grealish, 6.6 forward like Delofeu or DCL

Would be over the next few weeks for the double Liverpool gw. Any ideas/thoughts appreciated.
