Fixtures

When the Blank Gameweek and Double Gameweek fixtures could take place

The first Double Gameweek of the season is just around the corner, with Liverpool and West Ham United enjoying two fixtures in Gameweek 24 thanks to the postponement of their Premier League clash in December.

It won’t be the last bit of disruption to the fixture schedule this season, of course.

We’ve already had a mini-Blank Gameweek in December because of Liverpool’s involvement in the FIFA Club World Cup and we are likely only six weeks from another, with the final of the EFL Cup set to be contested on the same weekend as Gameweek 28 in the Premier League.

Blank Gameweek 28

The two Premier League games postponed in Gameweek 28 are Manchester City v Arsenal and Aston Villa v Sheffield United.

We are still yet to learn when those games will now take place.

Blank Gameweek 31

Gameweek 31 will be a blank for some top-flight teams, with the FA Cup quarter-finals set to take place on the same weekend.

Given that the international break immediately follows these games, there is no chance of any postponed fixtures being held in the following midweek.

Blank/Double Gameweek 34
2019/20 FFS Cups are now open for entry

Gameweek 34 looks set to be an unusual one.

While some teams will possibly be without a Premier League match due to the clash with the FA Cup semi-finals, there is also a free midweek afterwards.

It could potentially end up being a Double Gameweek for a handful of sides, then, while other clubs may have just one or indeed no match at all.

That will all depend on earlier cup-influenced postponements.

Double Gameweek 37

Any outstanding fixtures would then be contested in Double Gameweek 37, given that all the other midweek dates that follow scheduled Premier League fixtures are affected by European club competition or the March international break.

There are other possibilities beyond that (Triple Gameweeks etc)- but we’ll keep it fairly simple for now.

Other Fixtures

Forward-planning is not just about navigating the blanks and doubles, of course, but factoring in which top-flight sides have a congested fixture schedule around their league games.

Involvement in European club competition could have an impact on rotation from Gameweek 26 onwards: the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea, Wolves and Arsenal recommence their UEFA Champions League/Europa League campaigns in mid-to-late February.

The winter break should offer some respite for Premier League sides, although it will be tough to navigate from a Fantasy perspective as the Gameweek 26 fixtures are spread out over ten days.

A dozen teams are in action a week or so after the FPL deadline for Gameweek 26, which means that Fantasy managers will have to keep their fingers crossed for injuries not occurring the interim.

We’ve cobbled together a calendar for the remaining Gameweeks of the 2019/20 season, though in some cases (Premier League fixtures from Gameweek 29 onwards, FA Cup from the fifth round onwards) the dates are subject to change due to the whims of the relevant television broadcasters.

It should also be stressed that the future Blank/Double Gameweeks after Gameweek 24 have not yet been confirmed by the Premier League and won’t be for a little while yet – but this would appear to be the itinerary at this early stage:

Early Thoughts on Chip Strategy

There’ll be more focus on chip strategy once we have ascertained the fixtures in the bigger Blank/Double Gameweeks to come but there’ll be lots of Fantasy managers considering using their Triple Captain chip in the first Double Gameweek of the season – the deadline for which is next Tuesday.

FPL bosses haven’t had the chance to deploy this chip on a Liverpool asset since 2015/16 and there will be a huge temptation to use it on Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) or Sadio Mane (£12.4m), among others.

Such is the uncertainty about future postponements, then we can’t really say whether there’ll be a better chance to use it in 2019/20.

Those who still have their Bench Boost chips will of course be eyeing up Double Gameweek 34 or 37 but there is, unlike last season, some breathing room in between the blanks and doubles for those who have already used it.

The Free Hit chip could potentially be used in Blank Gameweek 31 but, given that we will have a little bit of time to prepare for it, that set of fixtures could feasibly be navigated around with careful use of free transfers (and perhaps a hit).

When to use the second Wildcard is another discussion point and again, once the Blank/Double Gameweek picture becomes clearer, we will revisit the various options for this chip – some point after Blank Gameweek 31 is perhaps the preferred option at this stage.

So those quotes in relation to Ings make him a doubt for the Palace game rather than this weekend?

Hasenhuttl may have been laying the groundwork for a possible benching in the FA Cup next weekend, maybe? By stressing that it's a "busy week".

Boo, was thinking of selling Rashford for him and for him to be benched vs Palace.

Not sure, Ings is a transfer option I'm considering this week but those comments are unsettling, particularly as the game after Palace is Pool and not all that appealing a fixture.

Sold Button for McCarthy before Button's price drop & McCarthy's price rise.
Now considering up to 3 more moves. Martial to Doucoure, Traore to Trossard, Aurier to Robertson.

    What do you think?

    Current squad:

    McCarthy Henderson
    TAA Soyuncu Lundstram Aurier Kelly
    Salah KDB Maddison Martial Traore
    Vardy Rashford Ings

So... does this suggest free hit in 31, wildcard in 36 and bench boost in 37? Hope and pray in 34?

Free hit could work in 34 too, but then you need forward planning for 31. Very interesting indeed.

One thing this does suggest... use the TC now.

Free hit 34 could be mega if there are blanks and doubles in the same week.

Agreed. From the looks of things, it could be a mixture of blanks, singles and doubles. Definitely not a bench boost week, which means that almost has to be 37. Havent seen this type of GW 34 scenario before.

I had the same issue a few years ago. Saved the TC and then got stuck using it in a single week. Not the end of the world of course, but not optimal.

I have twice used mine in GW38 - once it went brilliantly (Kane hat-trick), the other time horrendously (Sanchez blank). I've been so used to playing chips in the final quarter of the season that DGW24 just seems so premature and I'm not mentally prepared for it, even though there's a good chance that this is the optimum time to deploy it.

    1) VVD- Martial Alli - Greenwood for -4 (play 3-5-2)
    2) Rico - Alli Fleck - FIRMINO (play 3-4-3) option to get Salah for gw26
    3) VVD - Grealish Alli - Maupay (play 3-4-3/ 3-5-2, a bit of benching headache)
    4) GOMEZ - Martial Grealish - Jimenez (play 3-4-3/ 3-5-2, a bit of benching headache)
    5) ROBBO - Alli Hayden - Jimenez (play 3-4-3)

Ok, so I decided to use my wildcard, because in our private league I am on 5th place out of 12 and when Aguero banged it I was like now or never. My team after WC:

    McCarthy, (Button)
    Robertson, TAA, Lundstram, (Tanganga, Williams)
    Mané, KDB, Martial (Cantwell, Hayden)
    Aguero, Vardy, Ings

    ITB: 0.00

What I modified last time is that I kicked Schmeicel and Soyuncu, to have Robertson (and McCarthy) in. I am also happy with Tanganga, because he looks good and feels like he will be a starter from now on in Spurs (I kicked Basham for him). I watched some Southampton matches nowadays and McCarthy was quite impressive, so I don't think its a bad swap (from Schmeicel), the fixtures also solid for Soton. The only thing I am a bit worried about is that I changed Fleck for Hayden. I think Fleck is a potential moneybag (so as Tanganga and Williams), but I cannot afford him in this lineup anymore.
What do you think about this wildcard?

    Thank you in advance guys!

Richarlison is definitely a good choice man. In case of rotating, I need at least one player on bench I am happy with if Aguero won't start (thats Cantwell). So I can't afford Richarlison.
Also need a covering for united attack, as I don't have Rashford.

After upcoming GW, can you ship Cantwell for Fleck? (Maybe you're in one of those grim 0.1/0.2 below situations.) Wouldn't want NOR on team after BOU imo.

I actually can! Because they are on the same price! I didn't consider it, as Pukki will come back from injury, and these two always can get some points. But its a great suggestion and I will think about it after the BOU match. Cheers!

Team looks good. Is Robbo over Gomez worth it?

      I'm on a WC:

      McCarthy (Foster) - Rotating
      TAA Gomez Dunk (Lunds Williams)
      Mane KDB Rich Grealish (Dendo)
      Vardy Ings Aguero

For me yes. Some weeks ago I may go with Gomez, but as both Lovren and Matip likely to be ready soon, its a concern of rotation that I would happy to avoid for the price of Gomez.
Not mentioning the potential of assists and bonuses for Robertson.
Imho, Gomez some steps behind from Virgil, TAA, Robbo, you can see it if u watch liverpool games. Its something that Klopp definitely know, and will rotate him when Lovren and Matip are fit.

My thinking is Matip or Lovren - prob both, will be reintroduced in the FA cup

Gomez has brought solidity to the back four - CS's literally came when he was introduced, and thats why he's got the baps on 3 occasions

What is the feeling on Williams at Man United? Is he on his way to being nailed, or is Shaw going to get his place back?

DCL or Tammy for the next 4 fixtures? Haven’t seen either teams play recently so no idea who passes eye test. Stats are similar

    - neither are on pens
    - neither are great baps magnets
    - Everton has the better fixtures but chelsea the better team

Matip is back on training, and you should consider Maupay too, better fixture than Dcl.So,gomez might be drop in one of the games.i would suggest making other ways to fund for a pool defence as they have some great fixtures.

Just focus on Liverpool DGW in 24 for now and keep and mind City V Arsenal is almost certainly off in GW28. After GW24 the game cup 4th round is played 5tj round drawn and the EFL semi finals finished so we’ll know loads more before GW 25 and it will read easier then

Just use your free hit in a blank or double for maximum gain

Yeah that’s the rough plan, to just use them in the doubles with no 2nd WC. Try to cover blanks with a couple hits possibly or just skip them altogether and plan in advance. All very much over my head atm though

I find using the FH in a blank can actually be just as effective as in a DGW - saves mucking about with trying to cover the blank

To use FH , BB and TC using this strategy you need 3 DGW's as a free hit in a blank usually results in bringing in crap players who frequently underwhelm.

We'll likely have 3. But sometimes a FH can be golden in a blank

Just like last year, when only Liverpool was playing against Bournemouth and everyone jumped on Salah captaincy + Mane and Bobby with the FH and most off all grabbed serious returns this GW

              • 8 Years

Disagree. Many planned for it without using the free hit.

Not for me in a blank. The likely big hitters you will hold already and it's not too difficult to have 8 or 9 players - the rest are usually crap who yield very little even with the FH.

              Always depends on the fixtures

But it's also the same for the double - you've got everyone thats decent anyhow - only takes a couple of transfers to max out since generally its strong clubs that end up being part of the double

              1. George Sillett
                • 8 Years
                4 years, 2 months ago

Not sure about this as for the double you have 20 teams to go at . For the blank choices are far more limited.

I think someone did an analysis last season that basically showed that free hit played in a bank vs. played in a DGW were roughly equivalent. Obviously it depends on what team you have and who is blanking.

Given we don’t know much about blank 31 and 34, its really hard to know the best strategy at this point, especially with 34 being a really odd one potentially.

Here is what we do know from Ben Crellin’s sheet.

In GW 31, the following teams have a >50% chance of blanking: Chelsea, Man U, Spurs, West Ham, Man City, Sheffield, Liverpool and CP.

In 28, Man City and Arsenal are 88% chance to blank.

The two conclusions from this: 1) the only super safe time to use your TC is now; and 2) GW 31 could be really really ugly.

Keep it simple and boil it down to a few key observations:

      1) there are only a three DGWs. 24, 34 and 37.
      2) you may want to other chips in 34 and 37, but you don’t really know yet.
      3) if you want to guarantee yourself a DGW for your TC, the only option is GW 24.
