Man City v West Ham postponed due to adverse weather conditions

One of today’s two Premier League matches has been called off.

Manchester City announced this morning that their meeting with West Ham United wouldn’t go ahead “due to extreme and escalating weather conditions and in the interests of supporter and staff safety.”

A date for the postponed match has yet to be announced (it remains to be seen if the winter break could still accommodate this clash) but City are facing a real backlog of fixtures, with Pep Guardiola’s troops also blanking in Gameweek 28.

Progression to the FA Cup quarter-finals (or Chelsea’s) would also force their Gameweek 31 meeting with Frank Lampard’s side to be rearranged.

City’s Gameweek 34 clash against Newcastle United would be postponed if either team made it through to the FA Cup semi-finals, although the free midweek afterwards would accommodate one of their outstanding games.

As it stands, the other Premier League match scheduled for today – Sheffield United v Bournemouth – remains on.

The Blades’ fan services account tweeted this update earlier on:

Millwall v West Brom being played. Taking 5 mins to take a corner because ball keeps moving off the spot.

It would just be like something that would happen if Salah picks up a niggle now and wipes out the bulk people who would have had Aguero(C) and Salah(VC)

Firmino(vc) here. Hoping to get lucky, but with Sarr injured, KDB postponed and Lundstram not starting I guess my highest hope is fielding 11 players in whatever formation. Holgate 1p off the bench seems better than 0 now...

Guardiola will obviously want to finish 2nd. He can get over the line with rotation.

Cups and CL will be priority. He cannot afford to go without silverware. League will take the back seat.

Double or even triple GW will be very risky if you want to triple up. Capping City assets as well. If anything, get in Ederson and cap him for double or tripple GW 😉

For cup and other competitions postponements which happen before the deadline?

Seems unfair otherwise, with cup postponements you can plan around, for postponements on the day you can't plan for so it should stay in said gameweek in my opinion.
Especially if they are 'set in stone' after a GW deadline.

they would then need to keep this gw in progress, change whole logic of the game and recalculate everything after that postponed game is played etc...

Aguero triple captainer here so maybe I am in denial but I am optimistic. City's last game was on 2nd Feb. They could surely rearrange this game for next Sunday or Monday as they have a full week to make the arrangements, it would easily fit into the broadcasting schedule due to so few games being played on those days, and City would still get a 2 week break and at least 5 days rest before their next game against Leicester on 22nd Feb.

It would be similar for West Ham too, but City are the primary concern from a scheduling point of view because they are likely to have a lot more postponements after the winter break due to cup competitions so it would make no sense to congest their fixtures even more by rearranging this game after the winter break.

    Just my two cents.

West Ham will force City to postpone so they can play Man City when they have loads of fixtures and put out a weakened side.

How would it not be? My understanding is the winter break is not one set of defined dates but rather a staggered period of 2 weeks off from competitive games for every team. According to my calculations above, both teams would still get 2 weeks off if they rearranged for next Sunday/Monday. Unless I am missing spmething?

FYI my vice is Salah who I would be reasonably happy to TC this week also, which is one of the reasons I picked this week to use the chip.

As for those saying West Ham will force the game to be rearranged later because it benefits them - I think this misses the point that while both clubs can make representations to the league, it is the league which ultimately makes the decision on when to rearrange. And City's argument that they are likely to have rearranged fixtures coming out of their ears due to being in 4 comps is more persuasive than West Ham's argument that they would rather play City later down the line when they have other priorities...

Just read this on FPL - https://www.premierleague.com/news/299988 ... nothing in the blurb about away fans, just the local environment

" conditions around or near to the ground"

    Postponements for fan safety
The decision to postpone a match is sometimes out of a referee's hands completely.
Often it comes from the ground's Safety Officer, who may have concerns about guaranteeing the safety of supporters inside the ground, or from the Safety Advisory Group, who may deem the conditions around or near to the ground to be dangerous upon the advice of the police.
In every instance the decision to postpone a match is never one that is taken lightly and it is only ever reached as a last resort.

Would people rather have a 4.5/4.6m Sheff U defender (Egan, Basham), or Watford (Kabasele/Masina) at 4.3m?

Whoever decided to postpone the Man City game has made a big mistake.
The storm has blown over in Manchester.
Tell the West Ham fans to turn around and head back north.

It was the Safety Officer - based on local conditions, not travelling fans ... what time was that decision made?

I'm trying to understand how a storm going west to east postpones a match starting after a match starting east of the postponed match

"Make sure to wrap up and wear appropriate clothing" says the Sheffield United information line.

For Northerners, I assume that means put a T-shirt on.

So first DCL and Doucouré haul after I took them both out on my WC, and now Mahrez, the player I only got for that fixture against WH, gets his match postponed. Still many games to be played but that WC already looks like a massive failure for that GW.

Indeed, but I considered waiting one more GW before activating it, and given how things are shaping up, I'd have been far better off.

Just looking 6 midweeks used for CL ... all because they wanted to spread their rounds over two weeks

Crazy for the PL to agree and also agree not to have any (televised) matches on at the same time

      From March 2017

The Premier League has defended its position over the clash of Manchester City's rearranged Premier League match against Stoke and Wednesday night's Champions League games.

It had been agreed there should be no domestic matches starting at the same time as any European ties, and that they should also finish at least half an hour before matches in either the Champions League or Europa League begin.

However, City will take on Stoke at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, kicking off at 8 p.m. -- just 15 minutes after the second-leg games begin between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund and Benfica.

There have been precedents where UEFA has issued sanctions in terms of heavy fines, although it is understood that would be levied against the national association -- the Football Association in England's case -- rather than a specific club or league.

The Premier League, though, stresses the availability of suitable dates is becoming more and more limited.

"The Premier League does not seek to arrange matches on the same dates as UEFA but the challenges of the fixture list occasionally make it unavoidable,'' a spokesman said.

"UEFA itself has exacerbated the fixture challenges that English football faces, taking more Champions League and Europa League dates over the years while our competitions have remained the same.'

Can a match be scheduled for 1st April - it's the Wednesday, 1 day after the IB ends (would be gw31)

No - most players won't even be back at their clubs by then and besides international managers aren't going to release the players back to their clubs until games are played

Under a section of the letter from March 29 last year entitled
"Activities Club are permitted to undertake during the Mid-Season Player Break", the Premier League has informed
"Clubs are expected to honour and respect the underlining rationale for the Mid-Season Player Break, namely to provide their players with a break
from the physical and mental rigours of playing matches during the season.

"Clubs should not arrange competitive or friendly matches with other clubs during the Mid-Season Player Break."

If MCI progress to FA cup SF they will have postponed fixtures from 26, 28, 31 and 34 to reschedule

The only possible weeks for additional matches seem to be

29 - non MCI CL week
    32 or 33 - CL QFs
    34 - Blanks but possible mid-week (slot 1)
35 or 36 - CL SFs (UEFA wouldn't be happy))
    37 - Already a DGW (slot 2)

There are two known slots ... but another 2 matches still need to be squeezed into the above

FA cup replays were recheduled during the first few days of the Winter Break for some of the teams so wouldn’t be surprising to see this one scheduled on Feb 19th. They’d be having the same number of days off as Liverpool, Spurs, Southampton, Newcastle.

It's likely that it will be played 18th or 19th Feb so it might stay in GW26. PL normally doesn't get rescheduled to CL nights but there is a clause for exceptions which include enforced reschedules due to extraordinary circumstances.

If not, then it would be rescheduled to 10th or 11th March in which case your auto subs would come in this GW.

From 2017 when they did reschedule on a CL night

"The Premier League does not seek to arrange matches on the same dates as UEFA but the challenges of the fixture list occasionally make it unavoidable,'' a spokesman said.
