Scout Picks

Premium midfielders with appealing matches headline Gameweek 26 Scout Picks

We’ve gone big in midfield and relatively light in attack for the Gameweek 26 Scout Picks, which may raise an eyebrow or two.

As usual, we deliberated over the Scout Squad submissions made by David, Neale, Paul and Geoff over the last few days before coming up with the final team.

We shape up in a 3-5-2 formation, with our team coming well inside the allotted budget of £85.0m.

GOALKEEPER

No goalkeeper received unanimous support among our Scout Squad panel but Alex McCarthy did get three votes ahead of Southampton’s clash with Burnley. The Clarets are in the bottom three for attempts on goal and shots in the box in away games and ranked 20th for shots on target. Southampton, meanwhile, have allowed fewer attempts on goal than all teams bar Manchester City over the last six Gameweeks.

DEFENDERS

All three of our defensive picks this week received universal backing from our Scout Squad panel.

Nine clean sheets in ten matches is reason enough to back a Liverpool defender in Gameweek 26, with Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s assist potential – he has already matched his total number of attacking returns from 2018/19 – another string to his bow. The Canaries have allowed more crosses per home game from their left flank – i.e. Liverpool’s right – than any other club this season.

While Bournemouth have admittedly picked up back-to-back wins at home, they haven’t scored in four of their last five games on the road and Enda Stevens could potentially profit from a Cherries defence that has conceded more chances from their right flank than any other club over the last six Gameweeks. Sheffield United have kept clean sheets in five of their 12 games at Bramall Lane, with only Liverpool conceding fewer goals on home soil.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, have not only scored fewer goals than any other Premier League side this season but they have also allowed more crosses from their right flank than any top-flight team over the last dozen Gameweeks. Lucas Digne, therefore, is our Everton representative, not least because 65 of his 81 FPL points have arrived in home fixtures.

MIDFIELDERS

How many top 10k managers played the Triple Captain for Double Gameweek 24?

Mohamed Salah, the leader in our captaincy poll, has registered 16-point hauls in each of the last two Gameweeks and averages 9.2 Fantasy Premier League points per match in 2020 so far. It has to be said that Salah hasn’t been prolific on the road this season, scoring only two goals away from Anfield – although he has supplemented those strikes with five assists. Salah bucked the trend in his last away outing, however, racking up 14 points in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over West Ham United. Norwich have shipped 25 goals in 12 home fixtures this season, meanwhile.

Manchester City’s home game against West Ham is arguably the standout fixture of Gameweek 26, with Kevin De Bruyne‘s security of starts – he has made Pep Guardiola’s starting XI for 17 league matches in a row – a big draw given the unpredictability of Guardiola’s selections elsewhere. David Moyes’ troops have conceded 14 big chances and ten goals over their last four matches. De Bruyne tops the league for key passes in his last four, meanwhile.

With Aston Villa the only side to have conceded more big chances than West Ham since Gameweek 21, Son Heung-min is our third premium midfield option selected. The South Korean may be in a more central role at Spurs following Steven Bergwijn’s arrival and he has fired 11 shots in the box in the last four Gameweeks since Harry Kane was sidelined.

Sergio Aguero was a first-choice pick for three of our Scout Squad but, omitted by Paul and with other £10.0m+ options receiving universal backing, the Argentinean was a luxury we simply couldn’t afford. Instead, we turn to Riyad Mahrez as our second City representative. Both Aguero and Mahrez have started 14 matches this season, with the latter proving the more explosive with five double-figure hauls to the Argentinean’s four.

We’re gambling on Graham Potter’s unpredictable team selection as we take a punt on Leandro Trossard extending his reliable home form against Watford. All three of the Brighton winger’s goals this season and four of his five assists have come at the Amex Stadium. When selected, he has been involved in 64% of the Seagulls’ efforts in front of their own supporters. Trossard has averaged 5.1 FPL points per home appearance.

FORWARDS

Crystal Palace are without a clean sheet in nine Gameweeks, so Dominic Calvert-Lewin has a chance to continue his fine form in the Carlo Ancelotti era. The Everton striker is joint-second for big chances when all FPL assets are filtered by their last four matches.

Danny Ings may have blanked for three Gameweeks in a row (one of his run-outs coming off the bench, in mitigation) but there is little wrong with his underlying stats, with the Southampton striker joint-third alongside Calvert-Lewin for shots in the box when players are filtered by their last four matches. The fact that he has racked up those attempts in just 270 minutes of football (out of a possible 360) makes that an even more impressive statistic. Ings has scored in five of his last seven home fixtures.

SUBSTITUTES

No goalkeeper has kept more league clean sheets than Dean Henderson this season and the Sheffield United shot-stopper was the first-choice pick for three of our Scout Squad panel ahead of the Blades’ clash with Bournemouth, who score at a rate of less than one goal per game away from home in 2019/20.

Mason Holgate is an ever-present under Ancelotti and David was keen to see us double-up on the Toffees, with Palace’s shot-shy attack visiting Merseyside.

Jack Stephens was Geoff’s preferred Southampton option, having recorded three assists and three clean sheets in the last ten Gameweeks.

Watford forward Troy Deeney – third for xGI among FPL forwards since Nigel Pearson took charge – this weekend faces a Brighton and Hove Albion defence with only one clean sheet to their name in 14 matches.

THE CAPTAIN

COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Representing the community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 26 is Haggis.

They have gone for a 4-3-3 line-up of McCarthy, van Dijk, Doherty, Digne, Stevens, Salah, Mahrez, Moura, Aguero (c), Jesus, Ings.

The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

Community Champion gwitbrock beat our Scout Picks 86-63 in Gameweek 25 and as a result, their winning margin of 23 points is now the target to beat.

Aubameyang as captain ahead of Salah, KDB, Mane, Ings.. worth the risk?

Around 11k but think its the kind of move that could push me up the rankings quite a bit (or drop big time of course) if it works out.

Could work out but risky..Arsenal playing 3 natural strikers upfront last match, kinda puts me off getting any of them to be honest..Salah, kdb much safer

I'm all for taking high reward risks but wouldn't go for this one personally. Newcastle have frustrated big teams on more than one occasion this season and Auba has this irritating unpredictability of hauling and blanking at all the wrong times.

i think i would rather have Alli and Wood if you want to maintain your structure, as Wood gives you a very good option both in bb and also plays in 31. Palace might play 31 but against Liverpool..

no need now, but Martial is just waste, Kun is easy downgrade to Vardy soon, then i´m not sure what you going to do with all the money, no Hazard tempting anymore-)

I guess, if not double Liv def, Mané for KDB, Vardy for Kun, and then just downgrade Martial to whatever liking in 6m bracket? Or, i´m not sure how the math works, but the same, but with Mahrez to Mané if you still want de Bruyne? My thinking is that he is City´s most important cog when they going in CHL, therefore he won´t start in all games in PL, like next week, is Leic and then CHL and just a week after Villa in league cup final. Then it is FA cup, then a PL game, and soon another CHL game, and priority will be CHL, League Cup, FA cup and then PL. I don´t think it will be many games he misses, but to me it looks like 1 in the next 5, and he blanks in 2. Thing with Mahrez is that he is cheaper and he is more likely to produce within 20 minutes if he is comes in from bench.

Cheers, nice reply, much to ponder! Think I just need to go with what I feel are the best options and not worry if I've a few mill in the bank. Think going without any Manchester assets would be completely fine but it's hard as seems to be poor choice of mids of late... bring back Hazard

Martinelli is no good if you plan to bb, KDB will preoccupied with so many other games than PL this spring, planning a move the next week after wc, no, paying 10m for a Spurs player, well Son is good but Spurs are not and fixtures after Villa are not good. Vardy will become must have in 28, so for me, Aguero on a wc is good because you then have an easy route to Vardy, for me, Alli over Son, saves you 1-5m so you don´t need to waste so much on a bad team with bad fixtures, i would perhaps want a Liv def instead of mané, as this makes things easier in attack to spread your money around on players such as Vardy etc.

      1. LE CHARO
        • 4 Years
        4 years, 2 months ago

Not planning to bench boost anytime soon, my team could change a lot until then, and I'd rather have Martinelli than, say, Hayden, who will rarely score more than 2 and 3 pointers.

Also, I don't really get why you think planning a move one week after a WC is bad, yet you're advising me to get Aguero, which I would need to sell 2 weeks after anyway.

Regarding Vardy, he might become a must have in GW28, but for now he's a very dispensable asset in terrible form, so I'd rather wait until he finds his form back before I get him in. Actually, I went Son over Alli because he's in the same price bracket as Vardy, so I can pretty easily get him back in 2 moves if I'm not happy with Son.

As for Mané, with the majority selling him, I think he could be a fantastic differential in the upcoming GWs. He definitely will be in mini-leagues.

Laporte very expensive defender for player with no goal/assist threat and low chance of CS.

Laporte was one of the most attacking defenders last season before his injury. He has lots of goal/assist threat. bonus point and all that other stuff.

Got 11.4m who’d you get in midfield?
Already got KDB Grealish Maddison Traore

Going to be swapping out Maddison and with a bit of cash over I’ll have 11.4

    Considering
    A - Son
    B - Mahrez
    C - Richarlison
    D - Bergwijn

Anyone else, who should it be?

    Thanks

B *could* do well if he plays (Pep rotation) this gw but he's very short term based on following fixtures & tough schedule with Real in it.
      I'd go A.

With a UCL game away v Atletico 3 days after NOR, I think Klopp won't risk him.

I think the opposite, imo if Klopp wants him to be ready for a high intensity CL game against Atletico, he'll need to give him minutes against Norwich. I can't see Mané being thrown in such a game after not playing for 3 weeks.

Ok even if he starts, it'll mostly be a return to match fitness. No form currently.

It's Norwich though, don't think he needs to be at his top level to get points against them. If he starts, selling him would be a waste of a transfer imo. Definitely wouldn't buy him though.

not a long term injury and mané is a sort of player that does not need games to gain matchfitness, he bare had any vacation and just marched right in, but also in that first game he was a sub, so a little bit similar so it is very hard to predict how Klop thinks, thing is that he has cover for him and is not afraid of using them. and 20 points lead means no urgency to play him.

            1. LE CHARO

Not a long term injury, but enough to lose a bit of fitness. He may have marched right in at the start of the season, but it was very different from now, when the top European teams are at peak physical form. The real danger for his fitness would be to throw him against an opponent that relies heavily on physicality such as Atletico. I could be wrong of course, but to me that means he'll get minutes against Norwich.

and my point is that he will most likely play but circumstances indicate it may not be from start.

my point in my advice was that i would rather have Kun now because it will get much easier to get Vardy that way,and that route will mean that you get a third liv assets now instead of having to use one ft in the future to get what you ultimately would want anyway. Anyway, if you rather want Mané, and behold that structure, i would actually just get him in now. You would want mahrez as much as Kun out after West ham. I guess it all boils down to preferations, i guess.

If I was sure he'd start, I'd get him in now, but that's exactly because there is this risk you mentioned that I'd rather have Mahrez this gw. He seems like a perfect place holder for Mané given his fixture, a good cover for Aguero as well, and I'll have no problem shipping him off afterwards. Think I can survive one week without a 3rd Liverpool player with that team.

I feel safer (C)ing a player from the 1st weekend, for which we've had press conferences.
A lot can happen till next weekend.
Another factor is LIV play away v Atletico 3 days after NOR.
They're so far ahead, they have the luxury to prioritise that game this time.

they need rythm so Klopp will play his best 11, wit some slight alteration, and that may be mané from the bench, he won´t go into Madrid with 2 weeks with zero games for most of his players.
