Learning to stick to my guns in challenging FPL season

When you’re still struggling this far into a Fantasy Premier League season, it can be easy to ask, even now, what went wrong?

I’m currently ranked 910,047 in the world, albeit with 10 players left to play in Gameweek 26.

After a season-high 97,729 rank in Gameweek 3, I haven’t been higher than 506,273 since Gameweek 10.

Even though we’re not at the end of the season yet, and there’s plenty of points to play for, I’ve still been looking back at I could have done differently.

Overthinking

It’s fairly common knowledge that my FPL account was compromised between Gameweek 6 and 7. This resulted in me having to use one of my chips early. I haven’t used that as an excuse, but it is where the overthinking began.

Lundstram benched again as unchanged Sheffield United face Bournemouth

Because John Lundstram (£5.0m) wasn’t £4.0m any more I questioned whether he was still worth a place in my team. I’d have to pay £4.4m, which looking back I have to laugh at how I even questioned it.

He’d even scored 12 points for me the week before. When you see a player like this you buy them, simple. Instead, I looked to try and play the fixtures and looked at defensive rotations that saw me buy Fikayo Tomori (£4.4m) and Issa Diop (£4.4m) instead.

A player listed as a defender, playing in midfield. Genuine attacking threat and clean sheets to boot. In the past there’s no way I’d turn this down, I’m still not sure why I did this year.

Ignoring Form

In Gameweek 23 I wanted a Marcus Rashford (£8.9m) replacement. I need to take money out of my attack to use in defence and looked at both Neal Maupay (£5.8m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.1m).

The Everton man had scored three goals in the previous four matches, Maupay had one assist.

There wasn’t even anything in the underlying statistics to say that Maupay was the better choice either. Below is Gameweek 19 to 22.

andys-article

14 shots in the box versus just two should have been all I needed to tell me who was the better pick.

Instead, I turned to the fixtures. I don’t think that using fixtures as a basis to bring players in is wrong, but I tried looking too long term and ignored the clear difference in form between the two.

Maupay’s next seven – Aston Villa (home), Bournemouth (away), West Ham (away), Watford (home), Sheffield United (away), Crystal Palace (home), Wolves (away)

Calvert-Lewin’s next seven – West Ham (away), Newcastle (home), Watford (away), Crystal Palace (home), Arsenal (away), Man United (home), Chelsea (away)

Although the next seven fixtures at the time were better for Maupay, Calvert-Lewin had a nice short-term run and given the form should have been the obvious choice. While long-term picks are nice it’s clear that a mistake was made here – ignoring form, and also the shorter-term fixtures.

Short Term Transfers

Back in Gameweek 12 I made a fairly big move by taking Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) out as part of an eight-point hit to bring in the in-form Jamie Vardy (£9.8m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.7m).

It worked well. Since then Sterling has only hit double figures twice, and has one score of seven outside of that.

This is where tunnel vision kicked in. Because a risky move had worked once it would definitely work again, right?

In Gameweek 18 I wrote an infamous article about why I was taking Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m) out for a hit. I gave it a good bit of thought. He had a blank, Leicester (away), Wolves (home), Sheffield United (home), Tottenham Hotspur (away), and Man United (home) to come.

Not the most ideal fixtures, but I didn’t take into account that I’d almost certainly want him back at some point and mostly ignored the fact that Liverpool were the best team in the league, using their full-backs to attack and also had plenty of clean sheet potential. This was a short-term move that didn’t work out.

Going Forward

I think what I’ve learned from the above is that I’ve ignored my own advice of sticking to your game-plan even if things are going wrong.

I haven’t reacted well to doing badly and have been overthinking, ignoring form and making moves that are too short term at times.

I Wildcarded in Gameweek 26.

andys-article 2

I feel I’ve picked a team that fits in better with how I like to play, and eliminates some of the bad decisions I’ve made above.

No Kevin De Bruyne (£10.8m) was a big decision (I owned prior to Wildcarding) and it does feel a little like the Alexander-Arnold call but I feel with Son Heung-min (£10.0m) I’ve made a calculated risk to get a player who I hope can keep up with De Bruyne in the coming weeks at a lower ownership.

Up-front, I’ve picked two players in Jiménez and Roberto Firmino (£9.7m) who have both the form and fixtures. As you can see below both are in the top six forwards over their last four matches for Expected Goal Involvement.

andys-article 3

And while Danny Ings (£7.0m) doesn’t feature there it’s worth noting that he’s played Leicester, Wolves, and Liverpool in the last four fixtures and was rested for most of the match versus Crystal Palace.

I’m expecting him to find form again with the upcoming fixtures.

Conclusion

I think whatever happens from here I’m probably going to have my worst ever finish in FPL.

There’s been some bad luck like the Sadio Mané (£12.2m) Triple Captain in Gameweek 24 but ultimately I’m in this position because of some bad decision-making.

My only hope is that it will allow me to remember how I like to play FPL and what has worked best in the past.

I’m inspired when I see people like Lateriser who make big decisions like betting against Jamie Vardy when the crowd isn’t necessarily thinking the same way, but that’s not how I play the game and I think I need to stick to what I know.

This fascination with 'pro', 'expert' etc. over the last year has gone out of hand - a fair few of these self proclaimed people, mainly on Twitter/YouTube and less so on here, aren't consistently good at FPL.

I don't read much of them, but I like to read LR12's as he's what I'd class as a very good FPL player.

          Recent ranks of 189, 2212, 77, 49211, 8621, 12202 and currently 3459 - he knows what he is doing! 🙂

This is true, some discussions I’ve seen give some really poor advice. I checked one guys rank history and it was pretty bad year upon year. Oh well it is what is it. If people like it they’ll continue to watch.

One thing I've tried to do this year is not to put too much emphasis on what the "Pros" say.

That really translates as not considering them Pros. I do better at FPL then most of them anyway (big man over here :p) so i try to just play my own game and make my own moves before looking at their content.

I don't mean that in any disrespectful way to any of them, i still subscribe and watch Andy's videos and the scout cast etc but just view it as entertainment and people discussing FPL rather then "advice/tips". Always interesting to hear other peoples opinions.

You've hit the nail on the head.

It's just opinions - same as someone posting there's on here. People get tagged with pro or expert but I've never seen someone self proclaim that as Berbinho mentioned above. I'd be interested to see if anyone has an example though.

No-one is saying you have to listen to every single thing someone says. Listen/read the opinion and if you don't agree....that's okay.

Flødeboller, interesting, looks not dissimilar to a Tunnock's Tea Cake. Do enjoy a cinnamon bun, if you're in the UK get yourself the bake your own ones by Jus-Rol and you can have them hot and fresh out of the oven... boom!

Tunnocks tea cakes may look like them, but the flødeboller has nice chocolate, marzipan base and often contain a naughty twist like salted caramel or liquorice (they know how to get that right). Yum!

If you are a Tunnocks fan - the original bakery/tea room is still in Uddingston near Glasgow (go to the village for work occasionally) and if you do the factory tour - another couple of streets away - they give out carrier bags worth of the stuff (although website seems to be down at the moment).

I think it would be 1st team players, but they have a squad so most/maybe all of the top FLP assets would get a rest/benched for either that game or LEI, with Real Madrid in mind. The CL is City's main priority, not the PL which they are realistically out of the running for.

I've just taken a look at Arsenal's fixtures, if they progress to the later stages of the Europe League and FA Cup they will have three fixtures to rearrange (mci, sou, LEI) and only two free midweeks before the end of the season (GW34 and GW37). So potentially their fixture congestion is worse than City, who have up to four games to rearrange (WHU, ARS, che, NEW ) but enough midweeks to play them in (next week, GW29, GW34, GW37)

Off topic Erling Brut Haaland of Dortmund is so lowly priced at just 4.7m in the Uefa Champions League fantasy game and has been scoring for fun. No brainer to get him over Lewandowski (10.8m) right? Gives me funds to upgrade elsewhere. I have intention of captaining Lewa if it comes to it as Lewa and Messi play on the same night so I would captain Messi

The EO makes him an amazing differential. The key to that is he and Mo fairly rarely score in the same game (think it’s well under 20% of last 50 matches from memory).

      Probable one pointer mind 🙁

Yes, kept him, but I'm not sure about excited. If he's fit I'd expect him to start as he'll need a run around to ensure he's OK to start the ECL match a few days later. However, even if he is fit I wouldn't expect him to play 90 minutes agianst Norwich.

KDB & Ederson should be most likely to play given their status as Pep's untouchables this season

Let's not forget the reason why the prized assets wouldn't play if on the 19th Feb.

          4 years, 1 month ago

With Leicester 3 days later and Madrid 4 days after that it'll be open season for rotation

Id say only his untouchables will be safe in KDB & Ederson

            • 4 Years

Reason for not playing on the 19th is because of lack of training after holiday resulting injury risk. Therefore, logic suggests saving the prized assets.

It takes a while to lose match fitness - I'd say it'll be the same pep rotation as normal (I. E. Untouchables start - open season on everyone else)

If you say so. If the whole squad had a holiday for the whole week, I can't see the said squad playing a competitive match after 2 days training. A couple of players maybe, not the whole squad.

Well I don't know for sure obvs - no one does

But they play after 0 days training at various points on the season - a 5/6 day break is no issue in terms of causing a massive loss of fitness - but Pep rotates wildly anyways so id just expect his normal pattern to continue

If it was a 6 week break instead of 6 days - then would come into the equation I'd say

If you assume Liverpool get either Palace or Brighton in 34 then the FH 34 looks less enticing perhaps - you only need 8 DGWs and you should be able to get 2/3 on FTs. Assume further you have one or two 34DGWs anyway and the FH then may get you only 3/4 more.

Means people don't get Lundy off the bench (started him) and I get to play Mahrez instead of Rico, so yes, I do. Not getting away vs the Aguero captainers makes the gw more thrilling, too, how it should have been from the start.

I have same players 1st and 2nd in my bench. Aguero vc with KdB and Salah C. Really hope Salah plays. If Traore or Mane will be out then I will get Lundstrams points even if ManCity game goes on..., so many options at the moment how GW might go / end up so not sure what to think...

We could be STUNNED by team news once again!

50mph+ winds again on Sunday in Norwich - perhaps more given that it's near the river.

lol - more of a stream than a river. Lovely Mediterranean restaurant there though (or at least there was 10 years ago)

Reports coming in that Storm Dennis could well be as menacing as Ciara and the worst will hit Britain on Saturday.

That scenario had already occurred to me and that would be my worst nightmare with Salah(c) and TAA(vc) - and Mane. Ugh.

Always more fun when your captain plays - or doesn’t play - in the last game of the week.

    PLEASE HELP!

Hands up if you factored in the weather forecast before buying/selling/Capping /Vcapping City assets. Just want to know how many people paid attention for my research please.

I like how you disregard the option some have factored in the weather without reading your post. Good on you you tried to warn people tho, hopefully it will be played next week and it doesn't change much. Cancelled games/injuries are more about '(bad) luck' than skill
