Vardy and Barnes back with a bang as Pérez misses out on Villa rout

Leicester 4-0 Aston Villa

  • Goals: Harvey Barnes x2 (£6.1m), Jamie Vardy x2 (£9.6m)
  • Assists: Marc Albrighton x2 (£5.1m), Barnes
  • Bonus Points: H Barnes x3, Vardy x2, Albrighton x1

Jamie Vardy (£9.6m) was in a punishing mood on Monday night as he put both Aston Villa and his Fantasy Premier League sellers to the sword.

The Leicester striker missed out on the starting line-up for the second Gameweek in a row but was electric when he took to the pitch in the 59th minute.

Having lost 435,775 owners since his last start, Vardy took full advantage from two Aston Villa defensive errors to register an 11-point haul.

“He’s suffered a wee bit in the past six weeks with injuries and that has curtailed him but he was back to being aggressive on the backline and being a real threat. He’s showed really good composure for the penalty, because he’d only been on the pitch a few minutes. He showed confidence and calmness.” – Brendan Rodgers

They were his first goals since Gameweek 18, leading to a first double-digit score since Gameweek 16 – Leicester’s last game against Villa.

That will probably beg the question as to whether Dean Smith’s contributed to the 4-0 scoreline more than Vardy and his Leicester colleagues.

It’s hard to suggest that Villa were not the masters of their own downfall and Vardy’s brace, considering that both of the centre-forward’s goals came from errors. Even though Smith’s men ditched the back-three and used a four-man defence for the first time since a Gameweek 20 defeat at Watford, there is only so much a system can legislate against individual mistakes.

The most important one occurred when Tyrone Mings (£4.5m) made the questionable decision to throw his shoulder at a Harvey Barnes (£6.1m) cross in the box, resulting in a Leicester penalty with the score at 1-0.

While replays showed that contact with Mings was arguably on his shoulder, it was still a suspect decision to hurl himself at the cross in the first place – capping off yet another poor performance from the former Bournemouth man.

Vardy went on to score the penalty, putting the game out of sight for Villa, before Frédéric Guilbert (£4.4m) provided the so-called assist for his second.

Barnes played a ball over to Vardy on the left whose shot was blocked by the right-back but Guilbert was far too slow to respond to the rebound. By the time he’d got his bearings, Leicester’s talismanic forward had snuck a shot inside Pepe Reina‘s (£4.5m) near post.

The goalkeeper was also at fault for the opening goal of the game. After Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) had played a fantastic chipped through-ball to Barnes, not unlike those Danny Drinkwater (£4.4m) regularly produced in Leicester’s title-winning season, Reina rushed out of his goal in what could only be described as a moment of madness. Barnes found it far too easy to leave the goalkeeper stranded and slot into a largely unguarded net.

Seeing Villa practically gift Fantasy points on Monday night, owners of Ayoze Pérez (£6.2m) will have watched through gritted teeth as the former Newcastle man remained on the bench all evening.

Even though Leicester’s players have Villa to thank for their big scores, there is still plenty to like about Barnes, especially in home matches.

Adding three attacking returns to his tally for the season, 64% of these have been produced at the King Power Stadium. While Barnes will almost certainly receive plenty of transfer attention ahead of the Gameweek 30 trip to Watford, it must be remembered that the Hornets are joint-top of the Premier League for home clean sheets this season, while Leicester don’t play in front of the Foxes’ fanbase until Gameweek 33 when Crystal Palace visit.

However, Leicester assets across the board should be boosted by the return to full fitness for Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) who made his first appearance since New Year’s Day.

The holding midfield player has been such a crucial cog in the Leicester team this season, winning the ball back to protect the defence and reliably distributing to the creative midfielders quickly to trigger the counter-attack.

Without Ndidi this season, Leicester have won just twice, drawn two games and lost on eight occasions from a possible 12.

Consequently, Leicester defensive assets finally rewarded the patience shown in them by their owners, as they kept a first home clean sheet since Gameweek 15.

There was a particularly encouraging display from James Justin (£4.7m) who, stepping in for the injured Ben Chilwell (£5.7m) at left-back, offered plenty of penetration down the left-flank.

Owners of Çaglar Söyüncü (£5.0m) and Jonny Evans (£5.2m) may also feel a little disappointed that they did not take more from the game as both players were handed plenty of chances to score when unmarked in the penalty area by Villa’s questionable defence.

Smith’s insistence on using zonal marking for set pieces, if it continues moving forward, could be very good news for Chelsea and Wolves defenders in Gameweeks 30 and 32 respectively.

That said, Leicester’s clean sheet was certainly helped by Aston Villa’s continued struggle for goals on the road, as they were unable to construct many clear cut opportunities at the King Power Stadium.

There was some nice overlaps from Matt Targett (£4.4m) and Guilbert early-on and a Conor Hourihane (£5.7m) free-kick flashed across the face of goal just out of the reach of Mbwana Samatta (£5.9m) but, apart from those incidents, Leicester looked very comfortable.

With Samatta isolated for extended periods at Leicester, such a display bodes well for the defences of Liverpool and Everton, who host Villa in Gameweeks 33 and 36 respectively.

Leicester City XI (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel; Justin, Soyuncu, Evans, R Pereira; Ndidi (Mendy 83′), Praet (Tielemans 76′); Barnes, Maddison, Albrighton; Iheanacho (Vardy 59′).

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Reina; Targett, Mings, Engels, Guilbert; Hourihane (Davis 67′), Nakamba, Luiz; Grealish, Samatta, El Mohamady (El Ghazi 63′).

    For GW30, play which two:

    1. Soyuncu (wat)
    2. Grealish (CHE)
    3. Traore (whu)
    4. Lundstram (new)

Very well done to Vardy and Barnes owners (I own neither)!

Some people don't follow the ITK twitter accounts so wouldn't have seen Vardy not starting vs Norwich and Villa, and so would have kept him for both games. I feel like owners got richly rewarded.

And Barnes too. I could have done Grealish > Barnes but didn't, and thought I got away with it until last night. Congrats to those who chased the upside!

Barnes has played 700 minutes less than Maddison and has out assisted him and scored the same as him now this season. Kid is a talent. Looking forward to watch him develop. HAS to go to EUROs for me personally. He's been my saving grace (bar the past few weeks when LEI haven't been at it).

I wanted Vardy back after I ditched him for his poor run seeing this Villa game but Auba DGW blinded me.

Vardy back is possible for me but he’s been horrid for a long time now and the fixture run is almost gone.

Was that Villa or Leicester? Even Spurs put 3 past them. Not in any great rush yet.

I have been trying, without WC to get strong enough team for 31 (with as many double players as I can). Plan had been Barnes to Sarr this week and Wood/Deeney in week 31 for 9 players. But not sure can get rid of Barnes now. With .9 m in bank what move would you make this week?

    A Barnes to Sarr
    B Ings to Deeney
C KDB to Alli (or Sarr)
D Mooy to Doucouré would work although bench issue for this week
E Any other suggestions welcome? Clearly would like Fernandes but no point pre 32

    * play blank

    Pope* Henderson
    TAA* Boly* Stevens Fernández Stephens
    Salah* Mané* KDB Barnes Mooy

i would possibly just do Stephens to a cheap def in 31? Buti think i would just save, i did B myself though so maybe b if you don´t fancy Ings anymore. Southampton have fallen off a cliff lately, and norwich are fighting for their life so actually my gut feeling says Norwich will win this one, last chance saloon for them, a win here and they are not that far off the other bottom teams. Redmond injury and southampton turns into bad again? After that Leicester game Ings have been both sparsely used and also not shooting much.

main reason is i think Watford now goes into desperate time mood, they need to win and need to score.

that was my thinking with double Leic mid against them last week, they did nothing. They (Norwich) have been in better form and Saints are pants at the moment. Watching Norwich two last games made up my mind, they have been much improved defensively. Saints on the other hand has been abysmal since that Leicester game.
Ings can surely bag a goal, but then he blanks in 31 and the games after that is a mixed bag. Southampton with 34 points is almost on the beach, my move is based on what the team has left to play for, deeney and watford in relegation fight, saints almost on the beach and in awful form. Ings looks more fatigued lately also.

How dire were Aston Villa last night, by the way?

They face Wolves, Liverpool and Utd in GWs 33 - 35. Can't wait to target those fixtures with the likes of Jota, Jimenez, Mane, Salah, Martial and Fernandes.

Think Villa will struggle to survive.

awful, not just defense it was all over the shop. but were in it for the first half but they concede so easy on set pieces and they seem unable to defend in general, better home though. Not sure why they removed the 3 at the back system.

It’s been a decent season so far, especially considering how so many of the guys who usually do very well have struggled. Still a lot can change over the last few weeks, especially as there isn’t a uniform chip strategy like last year.

Chelsea and Leicester could be good. But I’m more likely to FH them in for DGWs.

Everton under Ancelotti are almost as poor as Villa in defence so not reading too much into either result right now. Even Arsenal shone against Everton

I agree btw, hence the knee jerk part. Still looking to FH in 34 unless the virus causes mass disruption. But it's a mixture of several matches why Chelsea are now looking good, they were great yesterday but also didn't give Liverpool a sniff last week in the cup and also they play Villa next, almost a perfect storm. Hoping to ride it out since they don't have any highly owned assets!

You can get up to 8 with transfers before 31.

FH on getting a full 11 with two fixtures in the upcoming DGWs should have a much higher upside.

poor away, better home and it is a derby. People makes erring when they translate from a 4-0 loss away to Chelsea and assuming it will happen again at Goodison in a derby match. Also, statistically a team that concede four in a game rarely do that in the game, former coach of norwegian national team Egil Olsen often pointed to stats that said after a team concede four goal statistics showed that the chance of that happening next game was below 10%. In fact, in 90% of the cases the team concede only 1.

      Play Soyuncu or Stephens?

Why did I sell Vardy to Auba for -4?

    a) I´m tard
    b) should stop reading this blog
    c) always go with gut, never follow the masses

because Auba had a double, and got a run of fine fixtures after blank. Sound reasoning, but it just fell on the wrong side this time.

For those using wc 32/33 how many pool players do you intend on keeping ?k suppose this might depend if they progress in Europe or not

Klopp tends to stick with a 'core' of players that get played in most games Allison, VVD, Fab, Firmino, would be a good examples. He may rest/protect some of the others. I do think they have gotten out of the clean sheet rhythm though and that would influence which ones i hold. But deffo 2, if not all 3.

no, selling perez instead. Barnes are pretty naied, perez is not. Not much appealing tbf, i had my eyes on Alli but Bergwijn also injured, puts me off him too. might just do a one week punt of Alli and Noble, just for the fun of 90 minutes on friday evening hoping for pens to be given-) I will most def check who the ref is in that game-)
