Vardy and Barnes back with a bang as Pérez misses out on Villa rout

Leicester 4-0 Aston Villa

  • Goals: Harvey Barnes x2 (£6.1m), Jamie Vardy x2 (£9.6m)
  • Assists: Marc Albrighton x2 (£5.1m), Barnes
  • Bonus Points: H Barnes x3, Vardy x2, Albrighton x1

Jamie Vardy (£9.6m) was in a punishing mood on Monday night as he put both Aston Villa and his Fantasy Premier League sellers to the sword.

The Leicester striker missed out on the starting line-up for the second Gameweek in a row but was electric when he took to the pitch in the 59th minute.

Having lost 435,775 owners since his last start, Vardy took full advantage from two Aston Villa defensive errors to register an 11-point haul.

“He’s suffered a wee bit in the past six weeks with injuries and that has curtailed him but he was back to being aggressive on the backline and being a real threat. He’s showed really good composure for the penalty, because he’d only been on the pitch a few minutes. He showed confidence and calmness.” – Brendan Rodgers

They were his first goals since Gameweek 18, leading to a first double-digit score since Gameweek 16 – Leicester’s last game against Villa.

That will probably beg the question as to whether Dean Smith’s contributed to the 4-0 scoreline more than Vardy and his Leicester colleagues.

It’s hard to suggest that Villa were not the masters of their own downfall and Vardy’s brace, considering that both of the centre-forward’s goals came from errors. Even though Smith’s men ditched the back-three and used a four-man defence for the first time since a Gameweek 20 defeat at Watford, there is only so much a system can legislate against individual mistakes.

The most important one occurred when Tyrone Mings (£4.5m) made the questionable decision to throw his shoulder at a Harvey Barnes (£6.1m) cross in the box, resulting in a Leicester penalty with the score at 1-0.

While replays showed that contact with Mings was arguably on his shoulder, it was still a suspect decision to hurl himself at the cross in the first place – capping off yet another poor performance from the former Bournemouth man.

Vardy went on to score the penalty, putting the game out of sight for Villa, before Frédéric Guilbert (£4.4m) provided the so-called assist for his second.

Barnes played a ball over to Vardy on the left whose shot was blocked by the right-back but Guilbert was far too slow to respond to the rebound. By the time he’d got his bearings, Leicester’s talismanic forward had snuck a shot inside Pepe Reina‘s (£4.5m) near post.

The goalkeeper was also at fault for the opening goal of the game. After Marc Albrighton (£5.1m) had played a fantastic chipped through-ball to Barnes, not unlike those Danny Drinkwater (£4.4m) regularly produced in Leicester’s title-winning season, Reina rushed out of his goal in what could only be described as a moment of madness. Barnes found it far too easy to leave the goalkeeper stranded and slot into a largely unguarded net.

Seeing Villa practically gift Fantasy points on Monday night, owners of Ayoze Pérez (£6.2m) will have watched through gritted teeth as the former Newcastle man remained on the bench all evening.

Even though Leicester’s players have Villa to thank for their big scores, there is still plenty to like about Barnes, especially in home matches.

Adding three attacking returns to his tally for the season, 64% of these have been produced at the King Power Stadium. While Barnes will almost certainly receive plenty of transfer attention ahead of the Gameweek 30 trip to Watford, it must be remembered that the Hornets are joint-top of the Premier League for home clean sheets this season, while Leicester don’t play in front of the Foxes’ fanbase until Gameweek 33 when Crystal Palace visit.

However, Leicester assets across the board should be boosted by the return to full fitness for Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) who made his first appearance since New Year’s Day.

The holding midfield player has been such a crucial cog in the Leicester team this season, winning the ball back to protect the defence and reliably distributing to the creative midfielders quickly to trigger the counter-attack.

Without Ndidi this season, Leicester have won just twice, drawn two games and lost on eight occasions from a possible 12.

Consequently, Leicester defensive assets finally rewarded the patience shown in them by their owners, as they kept a first home clean sheet since Gameweek 15.

There was a particularly encouraging display from James Justin (£4.7m) who, stepping in for the injured Ben Chilwell (£5.7m) at left-back, offered plenty of penetration down the left-flank.

Owners of Çaglar Söyüncü (£5.0m) and Jonny Evans (£5.2m) may also feel a little disappointed that they did not take more from the game as both players were handed plenty of chances to score when unmarked in the penalty area by Villa’s questionable defence.

Smith’s insistence on using zonal marking for set pieces, if it continues moving forward, could be very good news for Chelsea and Wolves defenders in Gameweeks 30 and 32 respectively.

That said, Leicester’s clean sheet was certainly helped by Aston Villa’s continued struggle for goals on the road, as they were unable to construct many clear cut opportunities at the King Power Stadium.

There was some nice overlaps from Matt Targett (£4.4m) and Guilbert early-on and a Conor Hourihane (£5.7m) free-kick flashed across the face of goal just out of the reach of Mbwana Samatta (£5.9m) but, apart from those incidents, Leicester looked very comfortable.

With Samatta isolated for extended periods at Leicester, such a display bodes well for the defences of Liverpool and Everton, who host Villa in Gameweeks 33 and 36 respectively.

Leicester City XI (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel; Justin, Soyuncu, Evans, R Pereira; Ndidi (Mendy 83′), Praet (Tielemans 76′); Barnes, Maddison, Albrighton; Iheanacho (Vardy 59′).

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Reina; Targett, Mings, Engels, Guilbert; Hourihane (Davis 67′), Nakamba, Luiz; Grealish, Samatta, El Mohamady (El Ghazi 63′).

How has your GW gone so far?

Which of your players were benched? Did you get any injuries? How did your bench perform? Did your captain return?

Rough: 30k drop from no Leicester, no Lundstram, no Mane, no returns from Sarr, Ings, Jimenez, TAA, McCarthy pen save on the bench, Lascelles on the bench, and on top of it all, this HT came too early for Auba(c) to turn things around!

Lundstram & Mccarthy's 24 points laughing at me from the bench

Faith in Vardy (c) combined with scepticism in the uber-troll that is Aubameyang thankfully proved to be sound judgement though

With Ndidi back hopefully Vardy goes on another streak for the run in starting with (c) Watford

      Rough

Transfers were Robertson > Ritchie, Vardy > Auba (-4). Net total 3 points (so far) Ritchie missed pen lost probable 11 points.

If I had done nothing I would have had Saiss autosub for Robertson (8), Vardy (11) and Salah captain rather than Auba (extra 9). Total 28. Currently 25 points down on the deal.

Unless Auba gets at least a brace then it’s wildcard time!

      Dreadful.

Sold Vardy (who I’d had since GW1) for Auba, who I captained.

47, clinging on to the slim hope of Auba scoring at City and KdB featuring to stop my ML rivals from getting Lundstram off the bench.

      Soyuncu - 6
      Martial - 8
      Lundstram - 12

With Jimenez, Ings, Jota & Sarr all on 2 points in my first XI.

      Smooth:

No Robertson or Perez so Souyncu & Martial points are guaranteed. Maximum jam will be enabled for Lundstram if KDB doesn't play.

        Not over yet, but

Rough: Auba TC. Minor things: Perez no show, McCarthy on the bench (it almost cancels out with Guaita from below).

Smooth: Keeping faith in Guaita, Mane and Barnes. Also, that -4 from 3 GWs ago to bring in Doherty looks pretty good now (10, 12, 6 points).

First time since GW 3 that i see a 5 digits rank.

WCed in gw29 so it felt good getting some points from newcomers like Alonso, Doherty & Fernandes, who also look good going forward.
Unfortunately sold Vardy & Soyuncu but can't blame the decision too much, seeing Vardy benched.
Luckily for Vardy owners, he had just come on to take the pen after that non-handball, but that's luck for some, or lack of it for others.
A very pleasant surprise was Leno's 11 pointer, not sure what to expect from him, Auba(C), Saka & KDB tomorrow.
No Mane also, which hurt, but if Pep keeps not caring about the league, KDB may make room for the Senegalese.
      Sarr's 2 & Saiss' 8 on the bench.

Was set on Salah Captain and Vardy and Barnes in my team before the DGW announcement.

Sold Vardy for Aubameyang and got in Saka for Traore who wouldn't have played anyway. Also benched Barnes as first sub.

If I'd kept to my original plan would have finished last night on 100 points with KDB to play. Currently on 57 (including hit) with Auba captain, Saka and KDB to play. So currently down by 43 points.

If KDB doesn't play will have 19 Barnes points but expect him to make a one point cameo and expect Auba and Saka to do nothing (what was I thinking? 😀 ) Predict about 7 points Wednesday.

Wish me luck or have a good laugh. 😀

Rough: Wallowing around in 750k place so took a last gasp attempt at climbing the rankings which backfired massively, dropping back down to sub 1m.

Played my FH and hoped and prayed that Liverpool wouldn't do anything. Ended up costing myself 31pts on FH with some still to play. Took out McCarthy, Salah, Mane and Fernandes to name a few for Adrian, Sterling, Mahrez, Perez.

      McCarthy 12 - 2 Adrian

      Fernandez 7 - 6 Doherty
      Digne 0 - 6 Pereira
      TAA 2 - 2 TAA

      Salah 9 (VC) - 2 Sterling
      Mane 13 - 1 Mahrez
      Fernandes 6 - 0 Perez
      KDB 0 (C) - 3 Pepe

      DCL 2 - 1 Aguero
      Ings 2 - 4 Aubameyang (C)
      Jimenez 2 - 1 Bellerin

      Old Team 51 (-4) - 28 New Team

In hindsight it was stupid, desperation is a cruel mistress to those around the million ranks.

      Smooth:
I was caught up with work throughout the week and hence do any research for GW29. I knew about the DGW29 and thought I would make last minute decisions post all the information from pressers was available. However, I ended up going out and got pretty wasted, thereby making no transfers at all for the week. I had only 1 player playing DGW and I knew he has a doubt for both the games (KDB).

So this is how it played out:

      McCarthy
      Soyuncu TAA Saiss
      Richarlison H.Barnes KDB Salah(c)
      Ings Firmino Jiminez

Current GW Score: 73 (with KDB left to play)

Sometimes it makes sense to ignore these DGW (not that I had planned to ignore it but still). Turned out to be a good week 🙂

Rough, 8 point BB fail with just Saka left, it was not helped by a double Burnley defense conceding from a penno and a last minute -4 transfer of lascelles to Masina since i had Ings up against the former so i did that transfer with gw 31 in mind too 🙁

smooth, a decent week anyway, helped by Firmino to Laca who i captained, with also Mccarthy and Saiss with hauls too, so currently on 71-4 with Laca(c), Saka and hopefully KDB still to play

      Season killing rough.

Only had 5 players for 31 and no dgw'ers so wildcarded to take advantage of both.

Took out Ryan, Saiss, Soy, Alli, Mount, Barnes, Vardy.

Have no idea what the points loss is. Absolutely petrified to look tbh.

      Smooth:

96 points. NO DGW players as I backed myself to go without any dgw as I didn't think it was worth the transfer with me not FHing in 31.
      Gw23: 1.1m OR
      Gw29: 29k OR

BB fail. All bench players getting 2 points each.

Rough - I was on 35ish points last time I looked, the lowlight being starting Saka ahead of Barnes.

      Played Free Hit from

Never put up a rough & smooth.

But just want to get it off my chest. Vardy & Zaha > Aubameyang & Saka hence dropping Barnes to the bench & had Lundstram 2nd sub [in fairness he was never planned to play] KDB back in training & inevitably preventing Barnes points coming in!! Drops outside of top 100K.

On the upside just about holding onto top spot in cash mini league

Oh, y'all are going to love this.

On a WC (so bear in mind that this is with one eye on the future, especially BGW 31)

But it's all rough so far.

      Took OUT:

      Alli (7)
      Vardy (11)
      Barnes (19)
McCarthy (12) (benched because I brought in Pope)

Currently on 38 points with an Auba (c) and KdB (maybe) to come, but my pre-WC bus team, with no transfers made, would have scored MORE THAN DOUBLE: A massive 81 points. This is the same team which has limped along doing absolutely nothing for a month, giving me four red arrows in a row. That team.

      Wildcarded. Disaster.

3 City, 3 Arsenal (Aguero, KDB, Mahrez, Auba, Pepe, SAKA) NO returns.

In fact Doherty clean sheet was my ONLY return full stop.

      25 points overall.

100k down to 250k. Led my mini league almost all season, 3 below me scored between 70-103 points. Now find myself 2nd and only just ahead of 3rd.

Pretty smooth: Barnes, McCarthey, VVD, Salah (c), Pereira, Doherty 75 points so far, OR up to 10k. Hard to resist the charms of Arsenal assets in advance, but Liverpool losing in the FA Cup pushed me down the path of riding GW31 without a FH. I think I dodged a bullet!

      Rough. So. F***ing. Rough.

Total bench score of 39: Dubravka; Barnes; Lasceles; Williams.

Took Mané and Ings our for Mahrez and Auba.

      Triple captained Auba.

To cap it all, taking out Mané and using the banked free on Auba rather than Jota (which was my pre-double announcement plan) leaves me with only 4 for 31 and commits me to a free-hit 31 I might otherwise have avoided.

      - Brought in 2 "D"GW players and have 4 in total. 2 of those 4 (KDB and Walker) didn't even play.

      Smooth:
      - Barnes saving the GW with his 19 points.
      - Boly coming off the bench.
      - TC Auba for 2 points was still twice as good as last year's TC Sané for 1 :).

We're on the look out for another Scout Picks Champion to try and beat the Scouts.

Think you have the eye to pick the differentials and form a winning team vs the Scout Picks? We need a Community Champion to represent us vs the Scout Picks for Gameweek 30.

The Community Champion picks a team including a captain to go up against the Scout Picks, within a budget of 85m and in a playable FPL formation. Whichever Gameweek champion beats the Scout’s team by the largest margin will win a £100 Amazon Voucher!

If you're interested in applying, email Geoff (geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk) with your FFS username and FPL Team ID.

The Champion will be picked by Thursday at 10am, so make sure to enter by then! The Champion then has until 11am Friday morning to send in their team.

    Good luck!

        Yeah, he's been so good!

        Completely transformed Man United.

Been quite good for those that got on early as well, think various different circumstances has stopped TOO many people getting on (obviously plenty have)

        - Generally waiting to see how he did

thankfully I have barnes and made strong gains this week, Im now thinking about players for the rest of the season rather than just 1 or 2 fixtures so ill keep an eye on sarr but wont swap out to get him. Barnes realistically could do nothing for the rest of the season but I have him as I dont have Vardy, needed a LEI place keeper and barnes is a good shout. hey all, I currently only have my BB and FH left,
im thinking of FH in 34 and BB in 37 (as ill have time to slowly add players to my team over the weeks to hopefully have 15 starting players in 37 for the BB.

I know this is difficult to answer but does anyone know if any teams are a clock for DGW 37 and playing in 31?

    Vardy+Doherty+Salah(C)

Wavering a little after a terrible week but I can still engineer a decent BGW31 team out of this lot without FH?

Might have to take a hit but currently have 7 players playing in 31 (and might change one of my rubbish Wolves midfielders in order to get a Wolves defender). Not ruling out the FH.

    Players with 31 fixture capped

    1FT 1.0ITB
    Ryan McGovern
    TAA VVD TAYLOR Soyuncu Williams
    SALAH TRAORE DENDONCKER KdB Martial
    JIMENEZ Ings Auba

    Thanks!

Yeah, Traore and Dendoncker really bringing it down. All looked in order about two weeks ago.

The other plus of a FH is that it allows you to keep the likes of Auba and KdB for 32 and onwards.

Then I envisage my FH team and there’s a certain ceiling to its points potential.

What are you thinking of doing?

Traore seemed quite a sensible transfer when I brought him in a few weeks ago. Dendoncker’s been on my bench pretty much all season, just fodder but as consistent a (usually low) points return you can expect from a 4.4 midfielder. So that’s just unfortunate he’s taken up a Wolves spot.

I still have my WC so, all things considered after a terrible fortnight and how my 31 FT plan is falling apart, I’ll probably FH in 31.

    Alonso, Trent, Stevens
    Salah, KDB, Barnes, Martial
    Ings, Jimenez, Auba.

    Lascelles, Soy, Cantwell

Got 1 ft I have to use as FH 31. 0.9 itb.

    A) Ryan to literally anyone
    B) Kdb to Bruno.
    C) stevens/soy to wan-bissaka

Just to give a little more colour - you have a lot of players I think Are desirable post 31 that you may need to sell if you don't want to FH (auba, Bruno etc). If you free hit you can delay your wild card a bit for a more successful bench boost. In theory...

I'm going to try and hold mine until 35 or 36 so I have the most information possible when setting up my bench boost. On the whole I am pretty happy with my team I only have a couple of issues to sort (my team is above) so I don't think it warrants a wild card at this stage.

All depends on how you strategize. If you want to wildcard 32 I don't see why you'd free hit 31, but looking at your team I don't think it needs a wildcard.

Some good points made by others here. Like you, I thought I was set for GW31 with long term planning and FTs, but there might be just too much upshot in a FH not to.

You look in a healthier position short term too (Barnes, McCarthy etc).

I was thinking of using WC 32 as well. That way we’ll have more information about blanks and doubles, and the advantage of a whole international break to tinker. Is that your thinking too?

Rory Stewart is already saying that all schools must close sooner than later.

It’s more about preventing the spread of the virus any further. If it spread like Italy. The NHS will collapse, and that’s not an over exaggeration. We are at breaking point at the front line already. And influx of patient due to the Coronavirus would break us.
Outpatient clinics are already limiting appointments for the future. In case the departments needs to close.

Yep agreed. The NHS is seriously underfunded as it is so if the UK did reach Italy levels of risk, it would get very worrying. I just think the very first thing that should be 'closed' is the thing that poses the biggest risk - the transport system.

Its still a illness. Very much like a flu

The death rate for kids is very low. Like 0.1%

But kids, well, they’re kids. They will spread the disease like wildflower. Bless em. Sharing toys, laptops, sniffles, wiping their faces/nose and touching other objects.

I only have 5 BGW players for GW 31.... These are the ways I can approach.... Need some opinion....

    A. Take -4 next two GWs & have 9 players...
    B. Use FH....
    C. Or use 2FTs & have 7 players

Can’t wait to wildcard to get Bruno in.

Or should I do it now?

If KDB doesn't play tomorrow I expect a mass KDB->Fernandes move, by the logic of "not risking him v BUR 3 days before Real".

Not yet. May reconsider ahead of SHU's dgw.

Pep on De Bruyne: ‘He feels better but he doesn’t feel 100 per cent. And we don’t take risks.

‘We have three important games in the Premier League, but of course the position that we have, Madrid and Newcastle are the real important games for us.’

Reading between the lines, it will be a no show tomorrow for KDB.

That was several days ago. He's since been pictured in training. Not that it matters anyway can't do anything about it

The way Villa are now, he may even be a captain option.

    How does this plan look?

    GW30 Save FT
    GW31 Sidibe,Ings,KDB > Sarr,Taylor,Deeney
    GW32 Traore > Fernandes
    GW33 Deeney > Vardy
    GW34 FH Chip
    GW35/36 WC
    GW37 BB Chip

    GW30 team:

    Foster
    TAA Boly Soy
    Salah Mane KDB Barnes
    Jiminez DCL Ings

    McGovern Traore Williams Sidibe

    Current squad:

    McCarthy
    TAA Soyuncu Lascelles
    KDB Mane Barnes Sarr
    DCL Ings Auba

    Subs: Ryan Cantwell Gomez Simpson

    £3.5m ITB

    This week:
    Gomez + KDB -> Doherty + Salah (-4)

    Next week:
Either Auba -> Jimi or Ings -> Jota

Would leave me with (for GW31) :

    TAA Doherty (Simpson)
    Mane Salah Sarr
    Jimi/Jota

    Seem like a reasonable plan?

I can get 7 players playing on BGW31 without a hit. Worth a couple of hits for quality players and save FH for after a dgw, or use FH?

Do you still have other chips to play? If so, FH imo

Similar position (team above). I already have 7 but two of those are Traore and Dendoncker. I’ve got double Liverpool defence rather than attack, so I’m veering away from my original FT plan and edging towards FH.
