Man City v Arsenal postponed as ‘precaution’ amid coronavirus fears

Double Gameweek 29 is officially off. That’s because Arsenal’s rearranged trip to Manchester City has been postponed amid fears of a coronavirus outbreak.

The news comes after it was revealed on Tuesday that Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis had recent contracted COVID-19.

As the Greek side were at the Emirates Stadium for a Europa League match less than two weeks ago, it has now emerged that several Arsenal squad members met Marinakis.

These players, who have not been named, are now self-isolating at home for the remainder of the 14-day period after the meeting.

Arsenal announced the news in a statement in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“The medical advice we have received puts the risk of (these players) developing Covid-19 at extremely low. However, we are strictly following the Government guidelines which recommend that anyone coming into close contact with someone with the virus should self-isolate at home for 14 days from the last time they had contact. As a result, the players are unavailable for tonight’s match against Manchester City and the Premier League has decided the game should be postponed. The players will remain at their homes until the 14-day period expires. Four Arsenal staff – who were sitting close to Mr Marinakis during the match – will also remain at home until the 14 days are complete.” – Arsenal statement

The postponement of Wednesday night’s match means that Arsenal v Man City will need a new date once again.

It also means that Gameweek 29 has now concluded so anyone who had Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) in their starting line-up will see their first substitutes come in.

It also means those who took a hit for Arsenal players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) or Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m) will have to make do with the blanks they registered against West Ham.

As things stand, Arsenal’s trip to Brighton in Gameweek 30 is still going ahead, as the self-isolating players can return to training on Friday.

“Everyone at Arsenal Football Club wishes Mr Marinakis a swift recovery and we look forward to the players and staff returning to work on Friday in preparation for our match at Brighton.” – Arsenal statement

Decided to not go with any DGW players as I trusted my SGW players over them. Got lucky.

Really feel for the guys though who tore their team apart to get in the Arsenal and City guys. Extremely unlucky.

Probably the best thing now for everyone would be holding on to their free transfers and waiting as late as possible, Friday night or even Saturday morning.

You can't scrap a season over 1 match getting postponed. Over the years matches get cancelled on the day all the time mainly down to weather does that mean almost every seasons fpl should be cancelled

No complaints on my part risk was always there. Though can see the rate this is developing at in England that the whole season could be in jeopardy by the month end.

As someone who is having their worst ever season by a distance I’m not going to just blame luck. I had triple captain mane, captain Son for red, Captain vardy misssed pen, captain Auba this week loads of bad luck but it’s no way near 90% and I have to take responsibility for my decision making after I get bad luck which is where I’ve got a lot wrong. A lot of people crying when they don’t do well and then claim it’s all skill when they do. I’d say 30% Luck, 30% effort/planning, 40% skill personally.

Regardless of who's in your team, FH31 is surely now an optimal strategy. Allows FTs this week to target form teams like Chelsea Man U or Leicester, gives best possible chance of getting 11 out in 31 accounting for postponements, and if the season is ended early, we've had an advantage by playing the FH

It's effectively next week. If we're 2 weeks behind Italy then GW31 would be the last GW, they'll reassess in the IB.

Nah. If anything, this postponement increases the need to save Free Hit (IMO).

Who knows how many more cancellations/postponements there'll be? If the Premier League want to get the finished, we could see more DGWs than what there already is.

No really. Valencia played Atlanta last night behind closed doors and the score was 3-4.

Behind closed doors could even help the team who is more motivated/has more to play for, especially if they're the away team.

Um, no. 2 reasons why it's worse than normal flu. First, it's new so no-one has immunity and so it spreads more quickly and more thoroughly through the population (immune people don't spread flu). Second, the death rate for Covid-19 is currently around 3.5% (around 4,000 deaths from 116k cases worldwide though this varies greatly with age and underlying health issues) while the estimated death rate from flu is around 0.1% (based on the US figures of around 45 million cases a year, 61,000 deaths). Another point is that we have an effective vaccine against most forms of flu which can be given to high-risk groups, but nothing yet for Covid-19.

For most healthy people it will probably be no worse than flu, for sure, but the overall impact could be pretty bad. The 1918-1920 Spanish Flu pandemic infected around a third of the global population and killed somewhere around 50 million (maybe more). While that disease was probably much more dangerous than Covid-19, it too was just 'a flu variant'.

Death rate of 3.4% is based on the number of cases that are known and made official. It's estimated that the death rate is actually less than 1.0%. A lot of the cases with milder symptoms are not diagnosed and hence not taken into account in the calculation of the ratio.

Sorry can't bother to find the link now, but there is an article published by Imperial College on it, among many others.

However it is still higher than the common flu which has about 0.1% death rate.

Apparently it's closer to pneumonia than the cold with the destructive impact it has on the alveoli

The latent carrier phase is also so elongated that its actually difficult to tell for another few weeks how bad it will be...

Declared cases also grow relatively slowly until the 500-ish mark - which gives a false sense of security and the impression of a big fuss over very little... But then growth starts to explode exponentially from there (500 becomes 1000 in the same space of time it took 1 to become 2... 1000 becomes 2000 in the same length of time it took 2 to become 4 etc etc)

There's a school of thought that given all these characteristics its possibly a genetically engineered virus - various motivations being speculatively put forward - including an intention to thin out China's aging population

There are many schools of thought though, not just one

There are also many (sometimes mildly interesting and thought provoking) conspiracy theories, many known, many unknowns...

Have you seen the picture of the whiteboard that s posted outside a GP practise showing the outbreaks in each election year, starting with SARS, going through Ebola, Zika etc right up to Covid19

            No I haven't.

Search engines are your friend 🙂 also check reddit - some of the more outlandish theories can be found in other locations too im sure - as I said, mildly interesting to some folk

It must have been an equally bewildering time when tobacco companies had the public reassured by qualified healthcare professionals as to the safety of cigarettes all those years ago!

Hopefully we're long past those days though 😉

Those asking if Premier League games could move into the International break if the friendlies are cancelled... there are also Euro 2020 play offs going on on at that time:

    Play-off semi-finals
    Thursday 26 March 2020
Path A: Iceland v Romania, Bulgaria v Hungary
Path B: Bosnia and Herzegovina v Northern Ireland, Slovakia v Republic of Ireland
Path C: Scotland v Israel, Norway v Serbia (18:00 CET)
Path D: Georgia v Belarus (18:00 CET), North Macedonia v Kosovo

    Play-off finals
    Tuesday 31 March 2020
    Path A: Bulgaria/Hungary v Iceland/Romania
Path B: Bosnia and Herzegovina/Northern Ireland v Slovakia/Republic of Ireland
    Path C: Norway/Serbia v Scotland/Israel
    Path D: Georgia/Belarus v North Macedonia/Kosovo (18:00 CET

Surely no way will Premier League matches go ahead with these matches too.

the best outcome for fpl is all matches behind closed doors. expect we'll find out before the weekend.

The players will remain at their homes until the 14-day period expires. Four Arsenal staff – who were sitting close to Mr Marinakis during the match – will also remain at home until the 14 days are complete.” – Arsenal statement

As things stand, Arsenal’s trip to Brighton in Gameweek 30 is still going ahead, as the self-isolating players can return to training on Friday.

    Hmmm. Isn't that contradictory?

14 days apparently expires this Thursday or Friday. It is the West Ham players now that may need to be quarantined for 14 days possibly

Given that I have written this season off, would taking a -4 hit to do KDB → Fernandes this week worth it? Do we expect Fernandes to haul against what seems to be the worst Spurs side in recent history?

Have KDB as (C) and Salah (V) and no other City or Arsenal players so this is a decent result for me I think albeit will only get 1pt off the bench replacing KDB.

Crazy stuff... definitely no merit in early transfers now. I have a feeling COVID will continue to impact the season in unusual ways.

Any chance of a triple gameweek?

Think that almost certain now unless they use international week as lots of international games will be getting called off.

Gutted about the game tonight but in the context of what's coming, this will be insignificant. I fully expect the season to end in the next few weeks. You only have to look to Italy over the last few weeks to see the acceleration in their health deterioration and the measures they've put in place to try and delay the spread of infection. That's coming here, it's just a question of how far behind we are. It seems like a matter of a few weeks. Games will soon be played in empty stadia and then eventually teams will withdraw from fixtures as players display symptoms of any sort and self-isolate. Where FPL is concerned it will be even more of a lottery than usual for a while, then the season will be cut short.

If you think FPL is "all about luck" you are actually very wrong.
How do some FPL managers get good ranks every season? Lucky all the time? No, just accept that you have had or are having a bad season and move on.

I think there have been a number of key moments this season that we’re luck based and they have benefitted some and hurt others. Two examples:

      1. Many TC Salah or Mane back in GW 24. Mane got injured in the first game. Salah = 48 points, Mane = 3 points.

      2. Many played chips this GW and loaded up on City and Arsenal players (having carefully planned for the GW). The second game is cancelled. This has cost players a lot of points, for example a popular transfer was Vardy out for Auba (captained at the expense of Salah).

How I wish for 0 pointers when starting injured players and not having the benefit of the doubt from your bench but still having an option before each match to decide if you want to go ahead with an injured player or use someone from your bench.

That would make the thinking behind your 11 starters alot more tricky plus it disolves luck and bad luck as points will be solely down to your decision making re who starts for you.

Cat amongst the pigeons. Nowhere to hide.

If the season ends up getting finished early then there may be no point to holding onto chips
