The best FPL players to buy ahead of Blank Gameweek 31

Six-time top 5k finisher Utkarsh Dalmia – aka Zophar –  highlights some of the leading Fantasy Premier League candidates for a Free Hit squad.

Fantasy Premier League managers are just picking up the pieces from what was supposed to be a Double Gameweek 29 but we can waste no time brooding, with the season-defining run-in approaching and Blank Gameweek 31 looming large.

I’m not going into chip strategy too much in this piece, with that topic having already been discussed in a recent article.

Instead, I’m focusing on players who I believe are good picks for a Free Hit squad in Gameweek 31 or for you to acquire now.

Most of you will know this by now but the Premier League fixtures going ahead in Gameweek 31 are:

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Bournemouth
Liverpool vs Crystal Palace
Burnley vs Watford
Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham

First off, let’s have a look at the xGOT (expected goals on target) non-penalty data from the last four Gameweeks to see which of these teams are showing form in attack:

In terms of my own team, Ayoze Pérez (£6.2m) is likely to make way for Sarr ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

I’m unsure if I’m going to use the Free Hit chip in Gameweek 31 as I only have four active players right now (Alexander-Arnold, Salah, Doherty and Jimenez) but with the Sarr transfer this week, I can get to seven by subsequently transferring in Jota and Mané for a hit.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) and Harvey Barnes (£6.1m) are the candidates to drop out.

The only players I would likely miss out on would be Pope, Antonio, Wood and another defender, so that’s a decision I’ll be making closer to the date.

Hope you enjoyed reading and good luck with whatever strategy you decide.

An FPL veteran of 10 seasons, Utkarsh Dalmia has been a member of the site right since 2009 and has finished in the top 5k in six of those campaigns, with a best finish of 17th in 2010. A Chelsea fan based in India, he relies heavily on statistics for his FPL decision-making process.

Let's not get on Adrian's back too much guys. He's a backup. That's what he is. He came in expecting to play league cup games against Wycombe, not big champions league knockout games. Not many backup keepers would be up to it. That's why they're backups.

Nobody is expecting him to be Alisson but the mistake he made is pretty much unforgivable.

Rubbish. He's an experienced premier league goalkeeper.

Just not a very good one.

When compared to his counterparts performance at the other end of the pitch. He may as well have been blindfolded in comparison.

Any top flight keeper who is training with the likes of Allison every day and earning thousands a week should not make the mistake of kicking the ball into that area. Sunday league mistake.

Yes get on Klopp's back instead for not getting a better backup keeper. Thin squad that's screwed if Alisson, VVD, or one of the front three get injured.

As not having 2 of the front 3 vs Barca last season showed.

They came back from 3-0 last season against Barca with even more injuries. No better back up keeper to Alisson wasn’t the mistake. They didn’t take their chances and the keeper made a howler.

As a substitute keeper you have to be prepared for every situation, you have to be on your toes, that mistake was a monumental lapse of concentration that cannot be let off playing in such a high stakes game like this, regardless of how nice of a guy he is, it is completely unacceptable

If Liverpool doesn't have better keeper to play and he is well known to make this kind of mistakes, who is to blame?!? He did his best. Karius had concussion.

Disappointed with the result but hats off to Atleti, they did what they came to do, frustrate us, and defend for their lives.

Also, Oblak is an unreal keeper, one of the worlds best. MOTM

Tomorrow’s back page of the Times saying all games in England will be played behind closed doors, as opposed to postponing the season.

I’ve only seen a screen grab of the back page, but it’s good enough quality to zoom in and read the first few paragraphs: https://twitter.com/martynziegler/status/1237875834167242753?s=21

I wouldn't oppose that if it came to it. I think we all need our dosage of football, provided it's safe to play. I just find it infuriating that airports and tubes etc have no restrictions but football matches will.

        football is entertainment

FIFA, UEFA, FA or whatever authority don't care about the fans that's evident from past experiences. Why are they going ahead with games behind closed doors without the ones who make the game what it is? Just my opinion but I would think it's to fulfill contractual agreements, financial reasons.

Rugani was first of them. They will quarantine the whole team for two weeks now. Next thing is Liverpool derby postponed perhaps 🙁

You don’t bench Robbo surely. Everton defence is utter cack and he’s an attacking mid at heart.

SU attack is very dull -I’id fancy a result there slightly more than the WH match and well Southampton defence is horrid.

Ah glad your said A and C mate that’s who I am currently starting, only considered Robbo to hedge bets especially with Adrian being in goal, but I have to start him really especially as you said with Everton’s defence and Robbo of course has attacking potential too, thanks for your input mate, greatly appreciate it!!

Embarrassing from klopp to blame them defending with 2 banks of 4. Blame your attackers, particularly salah, for being wasteful, and you goalkeeper for making it too easy.

A centre forward can make numerous mistakes by not doing his job and putting the ball into the net but a goalkeeper just has to make one mistake to be the fall guy.

There’s no need for all the unnecessary travel around Europe for a Mickey Mouse trophy.

When also rans where allowed into it and not just the champions it was totally devalued purely for financial gain.

And i defended Adrian, praised Simeone and said i hope Liverpool (impossible) choke their pl lead

I never said I was happy that they were out. Off topic I said it is good for fpl because less likely that there will be rotation.

I replied to someone saying it wasn’t purely Adrian’s fault for his howler because they had enough chances which they didn’t take, that is hardly “trashing” their attackers. Also I said it was a bad mistake for an experienced pl keep, which it was.

You were making your comments to wind up and piss people off, I wasn’t. Big difference and absolutely no hypocrisy

    Liverpool's misery in stats

This was the first time Liverpool have failed to progress from a two-legged tie in European competition under Jurgen Klopp, having previously been successful in each of the previous 10.

Liverpool have lost a home European game at Anfield for the first time under Jurgen Klopp - with this their first defeat at home in Europe since October 2014.

Liverpool have fallen at the last 16 stage of the Champions League for the first time since 2006, also as the reigning champions after lifting the trophy in 2005 at this season's final destination - Istanbul.

This was the first ever Champions League game to see four goals scored in extra time.

Since the start of the 2017-18 campaign, Liverpool's goalkeepers have made more errors leading to goals in the Champions League than any other team's keepers in this period.

The writers over at Skysports had their Weetabix this morning.

How many players will end up testing positive for Covid-19?

Just takes 1 from a team and the whole match will be postponed.

Can’t see the behind closed doors policy working for long. Look at Italy as an example. Season will have to be delayed.
