Euro 2020 postponed until next year after UEFA talks

This summer’s European Championship has been postponed until 2021, which could help the current Premier League season be eventually completed.

The month-long tournament had been due to get underway on June 12 but has now been put back a year following a meeting involving UEFA, its 55 member associations, the European Club Association, the European Leagues and FIFPro on Tuesday.

The news had been widely expected, with football on the continent having been brought to a halt following the recent coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The announcement first came not from UEFA themselves but the Norwegian FA, who posted the following tweet on Tuesday lunchtime:

UEFA confirmed the news later, issuing the following statement:

CONMEBOL, the governing body of football in South America, swiftly followed suit by announcing that this summer’s Copa America, which was scheduled to run at the same time as Euro 2020, would also be put back until next year.

The postponement of the European Championship and the Copa America raises hopes that domestic club competitions can now be seen through to a delayed conclusion, with the summer now freed up to accommodate the backlog of fixtures.

Indeed, UEFA said in the above statement:

The move will help all domestic competitions, currently on hold due to the COVID-19 emergency, to be completed.

A working group has been set up with the participation of leagues and club representatives to examine calendar solutions that would allow for the completion of the current season.

The spread of COVID-19 and the uncertainty over when the pandemic will peak means that doubts still exist over when any kind of sport will be able to recommence but the lack of international football in June and July does give the Premier League (and its counterparts on the continent) some leeway in order to complete the 2019/20 campaign.

The Premier League are set to hold their next emergency meeting on Thursday, to firm up their own short-term plan of action.

Fantasy Premier League will likely follow suit thereafter.

Currently, top-flight football in England is due to restart on April 4 – though that appears increasingly unlikely given the escalating COVID-19 crisis.

The Gameweek 31 deadline looks set to stay as is, with no fixtures taking place (as happened with Gameweek 30), although it remains to be seen how FPL deal with the Gameweeks to come after the decimated international break, especially if a resumption of play is not possible until the summer.

When and if the Champions League and Europa League will be able to restart is another question, with movement between a number of countries now restricted and the UK’s Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, announcing today:

UK travellers abroad now face widespread international border restrictions and lockdowns in various countries.

The FCO [Foreign and Commonwealth Office] will always consider the safety and the security of British nationals.

So, with immediate effect, I’ve taken the decision to advise British nationals against non-essential travel globally for an initial period of 30 days and of course subject to ongoing review.

We’ve heard nothing official from UEFA yet as to how they plan to proceed with the Champions League and Europa League, although Spanish newspaper Marca reported that the finals of the two competitions have been put back by four weeks.

Expect them to be axed and domestic leagues to be given priority, if that can even be possible.

With most European countries now operating a global travel ban I can’t see how they can continue with it.

Unlike domestic leagues there is no real implications for the following season. And no team currently involved in the CL or EL can say they are at a clear advantage (in the same way teams like Liverpool, Leicester, Leeds etc are from a domestic point of view).

No Implications! Tell that to Man City.
It’s totally irrelevant how far Liverpool or Leeds or Leicester?! are ahead, as it is how far Norwich and Luton are behind.
Games must all be played or season canned.

Maybe read what I said again?
I’m saying domestic football needs to be completed.
European competitions can be sacrificed this season to allow that to happen.

Well at what point this summer do you think the govt (and it is them that decide now) will think it will be ok to start playing premier league football again. It’s just not going to be happening.

Unless the virus mutates, the peak should be over by the end of Summer and next season should be fine, at least behind closed doors.

There won’t be any crowds until it’s gone....When it peaks is neither here nor there, not unless they want another peak....and even bigger.

Football won’t play a season behind closed doors...

I disagree, financial implications are bigger if it’s not played at all. If it comes to it, they’ll play it behind closed doors.

Also there won’t be a peak that’s even bigger as more people will gain immunity for the virus over time.

                  Did she say that?

We have to be realistic. This government is not going to sanction the return of sport like football for a long time to come. Further...once this thing is beaten I think it very likely restrictions will stay in place for a good period of time afterwards to ensure it really has gone...it’s inconceivable to think they would rush to return things too quickly....

She said a week or so ago that the season should be null and void. Lots of people jumped on it as obviously WHU aren’t in the best position right now.

I really don’t know enough to comment on how long this will go on for. I mean I’ve seen the French open has been postponed today, they suspect Wimbledon too will be cancelled.
Can’t see the olympics going ahead, so based on those timeframes that puts us into September before we can even think about it.

Like I say, I don’t know enough, but the UK government seems to have switched strategy from ‘the more people who have it the better/quicker our immunity will be’ to ‘stay at home unless you need toilet paper....and if you need toilet paper, tough luck!’

I’m just reading now Patrick Vallance has advices that the measures currently in place (so mass gatherings etc) will be in place for months rather than weeks. (In response to a question speculating they could be in place for 18 months)

He says the measures won’t be relaxed until we’re able to keep the virus at a level the NHS can manage below capacity.

Yep. That sounds right....and....As I just posted elsewhere.

When this thing I s beaten the floodgates won’t be open end to resume straight away. Restrictions will be lifted over a period of time. Public Transport restrictions, getting people back to work, opening schools back up etc...

Opening 50,000 seater stadiums will be absolutely bottom of the list.

I have a serious question @mods and owners of this site.

We dont know when football will return so for all of us FPL managers its just like not ending international break torture. I think we must find something to focus on and have some fun.
Is it possible to run eFantasy Premier League here? Games could be played (more watched) on FIFA 2020 for example (or any other football game) where all games are played by computer (no human game playing skills involved).

I know it sounds crazy but many of us are really bored and even for you it is time where you dont have ideas for new posts here.
You could try to make hot topic or atrticle and find out how many people would be interested as I know few people who would defo play.

There are few things that need to be discussed like game rights for example. Can FIFA 2020 or any other football game can be shown in public? I think it does as there are many movies on YT etc. So games could be shown on YT (people can watch it full or just check the result).
Than we need an app to pick team, make transfers, count points etc (that would be perfect!) or just use FPL site. Using FPL would be more difficult as someone must count points somewhere plus before GW starts managers must pick their teams and post it somewhere.

Rules would be almost same as in FPL but no price changes and no bonus points to make things easier. GW can be every day or every 2-3 days or just during weekend - that is open thing to discuss.

So @mods. Can you just try to think about that idea please? Could you make HT or article and ask what people think? Finally could you think about how this could be done and is it possible for you to run it?

    Thank you.

Hey Stoichkov - I don't think at the moment it's something that we would be able to run but I've made your post a sticky if people want to add their thoughts about whether they'd be interested.

Obviously we'd be happy to edit a community article if it ended up going ahead and someone wanted to submit that every "Gameweek" or similar.

FIFA 20 can be shown on YouTube - I don't think you'd run into too many issues there.

For how could this be done - I'm not entirely sure what the easiest way would be. It sounds like it would be a lot of admin / manual inputs. Maybe this could be done quicker if someone could create an app or a spreadsheet that works it all out but that is really above my level of knowledge.

Can't see this working tbh as inevitably it would rule out the unexpected ( a simulated prediction model for example is not going to produce a Watford 3 Liverpool 0 result). The end game becomes overwhelming predictability and eradicates any benefit derived from differential picks. Not a bad idea but ultimately I think that it would end up being tedious .

I'm not so sure. ESPN runs a FIFA computer v computer simulation of an upcoming game about once a week, and the underdog wins more often than you might think. For example:

        http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=4071015
(their prediction: Liverpool 0-2 Atletico Madrid)

Hi all, as I am very bored too, I am working on building an FPL-like game like that, without FIFA or any video game. I built a game simulator that simulates every game based on many factors and shows the events/result as text. I am now building a simple user interface on LiveFPL so that people can pick their teams, transfers, chips etc. Hopefully in 1-2 weeks, it will be ready! We will then be able to play a full season from scratch, with something like 2 GWs every week.

And about the unpredictability point raised above, I can tweak the level of random surprises in my simulator to any level, we can discuss more about how unpredictable we want it when the game is ready.

This is why I wrote that post, to find people who can/want do it.
FIFA 20 or any other game would give as something to watch not only final result as this may be a bit boring but any idea is good at thid point.

I agree that watching would be more fun.. Trouble with FIFA is that you have to do lots of manual labor to keep track of events in the game and then convert them outside to FPL points. Also if you want to watch a simulated FIFA game, it probably won't be part of a season, where lineup rotations and injuries happen etc so you lose continuity of events. Also FIFA player ratings are sorta different than FPL ratings while the built simulator relies heavily on how players are performing FPL wise.

I would love it if many will sign up for the game since it is requiring a lot of effort on my end.. Hopefully I will release some simulated pre season friendlies so that you can all get an idea about how the simulation works and see if you like how the events are presented.

That said, the simulation is not just final result but more like a minute by minute script of big chances created then missed or scored, yellow cards, penalties etc

The almost immediate change in sentiment that will come with a few more countries getting a hold of this can’t come quick enough

Suprised more isn’t being made of the way China have managed to contain things too - in 4 months from 1,500,000,000 people, to limit fatalities to 3,000 is an unbelievable success (If it’s true)

Worldwide deaths still a good bit below 10,000 too (7,520) which is also a positive - hopefully stays that way & we don’t start seeing explosions in cases/deaths coming in the next days & weeks

I suppose we have to take the numbers at face value though and (if true) it’s surely encouraging to see such low fatality rates from such a massive population who have supposedly been exposed to this for much, much longer than he rest of the world

Our government knew the situation many weeks ago and their advice was to go home and die. Their interventions or lack thereof will be in great part responsible.

The death toll in the countries you mention will rise very significantly soon

Apparently the Chief Scientic Adviser "says it would be "a good outcome" if the number of coronavirus-related deaths in the UK can be kept to below 20,000."

I think this is due to them having f*cked up in the first place.
Other countries have warned UK and said that any delay in taking drastic measure leads to exponential cases in 2-3 weeks time.
Hence now UK says the number will start dropping in 2-3 weeks time based on things taking into effect since yesterday.
          But they wasted valuable time.

              Either they are

              Or
              B) they do not care / have a hidden agenda.

I'm leaning towards A, as B would be just too bad and sad.

Possible because if a pub/cinema/restaurant is ordered to close by the government, then the government or insurance firms need to pay out to those businesses for loss of earnings.

If it’s just a strongly worded government recommendation, then they can’t claim for those losses.

The UK government want manufacturers to make ventilators including car makers. Might be a leap from making aircon units for cars to high spec ventilators in ICU cleanroom environments but ye have top engineers and designers so it should definitely be feasible.

Compared to Germany, the U.K. already has nearly triple the deaths (56 vs 20) from less than a quarter of the cases (1,950 vs 8,750) 🙁

But Germany do seem to be an outlier(at present) in how they’re avoiding fatalities

Even South Korea (who are managing very low/sub-1% fatality rates with 84 deaths from 8,320 cases) are way behind Germany in terms of being able to save lives of Covid19 cases

I don't believe the figures being given out, I think the Coronavirus is far worse than being stated in almost every country and governments are trying to downplay it's seriousness. Even the official figures suggest that the death rate is far higher than the 1% we are being told. Worldwide 80874 have officially recovered from the virus, and there have been 7513 deaths, that's a 9% death rate. Active cases are a little more promising if the official figures can be believed 94767 (94%) in a mild condition and 6514 in serious or critical condition (6%).

which is misleading because we don't know if those who have not recovered are going to die or not, and of those who have yet to recover 6% are in critical condition according to the official figures.

and that's part of the reason I don't believe the figures being given out, which even at the 3% you mentioned is 3 times higher than quoted in the PM's statement yesterday.

Death rate worldwide is currently approaching 4% - but it’s measured as deaths versus diagnosed cases, not deaths versus recoveries

Worldwide there are currently 190,499 diagnosed cases, 7,523 of which have resulted in fatalities (3.95% mortality rate), with 81,025 cases having recovered, and the remainder still active cases

It would be interesting to see how many have been tested in total though - is it in the millions, tens of millions etc - as less than 200k cases worldwide seems very low for a 7 billion population, 1.5 billion of which (China) have allegedly been exposed to this for nearly 4-5 months since Nov/Dec’19

Sensible decision, given the amount of time that people have been asked to self isolate, I can't see professional football of any type being played again in Europe before June the 12th.

Do we know if the 2020 World Cup is going to be put back a year as well ? If not it's going to be a logistical nightmare trying to fit international fixtures in a football programme that was already over crowed before the Coronavirus struck.

Actually, if this situation exposes some of what you are talking about then it will perhaps do a service.

In the USA, around 25% of the population either have no health insurance or insufficient health insurance, simply because they cannot afford it. Even those who have it need to pay part of the cost of treatment in most cases (they call it co-payment). People pay exorbitant prices for procedures and prescription drugs whilst health insurance companies and pharmaceuticals make mega profits.. That means that many cannot even afford to see a doctor if they are ill and then have to think twice about whether they can afford any treatment or medicine prescribed if they do.

The amounts charged are huge by European standards, this little video show British reactions to being told what medical procedures cost in the USA.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kll-yYQwmuM

Not to say that Europe is perfect by any means. Although most/all European countries technically guarantee healthcare to all, even in those that do there is invisible rationing and a fast-track availability for those that can afford to pay for it (or have private insurance).

Those are just facts. I won't express an opinion about them.

Our situation here is untenable. And the candidate who wants to expand medical care is losing to the one who doesn't want to. Private insurance running our health care industry is criminal.

Yeah. Trouble is that Bernie's plans are such a huge leap from where you are - and you have to start from where you are and carry people with you.

Far as I can see, the biggest deciding factor will be who controls the Senate from 2021 because the President can't do anything about this without Senate consent, no matter who he/she is. Look how long it took even to get Obamacare approved.

That's why - from outside - Biden looks your best option. Not because he's more right but because he's more moderate than Bernie and stands a much better chance of carrying the Senate as well. You may not then get everything you want but you will certainly get substantial movement in the right direction (for example the Public Health Insurance option and a clamp-down on pharma prices).

That's how it looks to me as an outsider anyway.

I know the finances of the lower leagues isn't the problem of the top teams and they aren't allowed to 'help out', but under the circumstances wouldn't it be the right thing to do. Filter some of that money down to help clubs in need?

    1. HamezMace
      • 9 Years

Absolutely. Especially as those clubs rely much more heavily on gate receipts.

FA has finances in reserves, what better example of when that’s needed than now.

Lawrenson was ilon the radio last week saying that PL players should donate their wages at this time to lower league clubs. I wouldn't agree with much he has to say, and it's very unlikely, but a good idea nonetheless.

From what I understand it's in the rules that they can't even if they wanted to. The FA would either need to relax their rules, or ideally simply cough up themselves.

Yeah, might not suit everyone's tastes. I only made it through one episode of Black Mirror, at least partly from its very formulaic approach (see this to understand what I'm talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1aSqZ23ydk).

The resolution features a commitment to complete all domestic and European club competitions by the end of the current sporting season, i.e. 30 June 2020 at the latest, should the situation improve and resuming playing be appropriate and prudent enough.

    Seems a bit ambitious.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
      When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am
      I have become comfortably numb

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
        A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
        They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
        In such a jocund company:
        I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
        Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
        And dances with the daffodils.

          Lovely stuff 🙂

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
          The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
          Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
          The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
          Are full of passionate intensity.

          Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

It was the originall line-up at Earls Court. I'm fairly sure that it was 1980. My ex brother-in-law got the tickets and we had really good tickets near the front. Comfortably Numb is an all time classic track.
I actually prefer their earlier stuff and I also saw them at Bingley Hall in 1975. My mum and dad went too! Fast forward to 1994 they went to see Floyd (minus Waters) on the Divsion Bell tour. My dad had become blind by then, but he really liked Floyd. He was 77 at the time!

They played at UEA (Norwich) on June 22nd 1968 but I didn't start at UEA until September that year. I have spoken to one or two who were there - apparantely becuase there were so many spliffs on the go you could quite stoned by simply breathing. I'm sure that somewhere I have one of the early vinyls with Syd on. 😀

Those must be great memories 🙂

I’ve never seen them live but still can’t believe the run of albums they had in the 70s - it was awe inspiring:

              Meddle ‘71
Dark Side Of The Moon ‘73
              Wish You Were Here ‘75
              Animals ‘77
              The Wall ‘79

It must have been surreal to see a legendary group at the peak of their creative powers

Nothing can match the Stones 68-72; Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street. Especially when you consider that they left the singles off the albums, Jumping Jack Flash was recorded during the Beggars Banquet sessions and Honky Tonk Women was really a Let It Bleed track.

You'd be hard put to find one filler track on any of those 4 albums and no-one could beat them live during that period either.

We all have our favourites don't we? I always really liked the Stones singles but I was distinctly underwhelmed when I bought Sticky Fingers and Beggars Banquet. Even I thought that was very strange - so it must be me. I even had tickets to see them in the 70s but couldn't go - my brother inherited them instead.

The Stones are a band i have never really gotten into as much for some reason... but Gimme Shelter never fails to inspire Goose Bumps - i only found it through The Departed as well - shame on me!

Whereas, even though I only got into Pink Floyd a few years ago, I was just instantly blown away by Echoes for some reason - its like going on a trip without taking any psychedlics lol & it acted as a hook into Meddle - which led to Dark Side of The Moon - Which led to Wish You Were here & so on & so on all the way through those '70s albums

I still don't know how a single band can string those 5x albums back to back in an 8 year period, almost as if they tapped into something supernatural - some of the songs still sound light years of us ahead even today

Then there's the whole mythology side of Pink Floyd's journey through time - the story of Sid is just so tragic & scary - it could happen to anyone, yet the band kept going

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I think the first 3 of those Floyd albums especially were great and I have a very soft spot for Wish You Were Here. But I could put albums from other bands in the same vein alongside them quite happily whereas what the Stones achieved in those 4 albums more or less created a pinnacle of their genre (blues-rock, blues-country) that will probably never be surpassed. They also showed a fantastic level of invention they don't get wide credit for.

I guess there's some strange chemistry in what types of music speak to you and what passes you by. Wouldn't be surprised if brain circuitry had something to do with it because there's no doubt that 'substances' can also affect your perception of music significantly. For example, I have never liked Country music (or so I thought) and only after 50 years have discovered that it's Country & Western that I don't get; the original Country music (Carter Family, Bill Monroe, Jimmie Rodgers) is just a delight to me now I have discovered it. Maybe because it has its roots in Irish/Scots folk music as well as African-American Blues, influences that sit very easily with me.

Anyways... nice to be able to ramble about such things when locked down at home. 🙂

Overewatch league will resume on Saturday.

Under normal circumstances you would all scoff at eSports, but right now this is the biggest sporting event available.

London Spitfire won Season one, struggled last year so built an entirely new team from scratch this year.

Manchester United have released a statement in response to the UEFA announcement

'(We) note the decision to postpone Euro 2020 to hopefully allow domestic and European competitions to come to a conclusion as a priority.

'We will continue to play an active role in discussions through UEFA, the European Club Association and Premier League and we will monitor developments closely.'

    Cancel the season *evil laugh*

Its gonna be MGW38. M stands for MEGA. All in! Its gonna be fun. You cant play BB, FH and TC all at the same time, so I guess more or less everyone will have the same chances. Even if you have Zero chips left you just take hits and if you get your (c)hoice right....

All yous who were begging for LFC not win the League, LFC only need 3 more points for it to go to a points draw and GD.

Let's just get that straight and for us to not be crowned Champions even if the season was cancelled would not even save VAR.

    Simple.

I hope the season can complete, no matter how long it takes (I'd even delay the next one). Until Liverpool actually win the title they haven't won it. If it was awarded now it would never be classed as a real win. The same goes for all the other things that may be decided.

Don't be daft, Liverpool have effectively won the title.

But they haven’t. They’ll be desperate to get it confirmed officially.
