Scoutcast Episode 328 – FPL and Mental Health

In this latest Scoutcast Extra, we focus on how Fantasy Football can impact on our mental health.

Joe, Andy and Neale consider the emotional challenges of being a Fantasy manager and how we can tackle them. This ranges from serious gaming addiction disorders to coping with the fallout from a poor Gameweek.

The impact on social media on Fantasy Premier League managers’ mental health is also discussed as our Scoutcast trio also look at the positive benefits of Fantasy management.

They consider how the FPL community can be a great source of comfort, especially in tough times such as the current Covid-19 lockdown.

The community’s views about the emotional impact of being a Fantasy manager also take centre stage, as they candidly take us through their highs and lows of the game.

Community regulars like Ragabolly are proving an enormous comfort to FPL managers, having ingeniously created games to keep us happy during lockdown. His Virtual FPL game has already attracted thousands of players, including Andy, Joe and Neale. They chat about their contrasting fortunes playing the game and top tips for the coming Gameweeks.

This in the real thing is it? TV is pretty high if so.

DDG and Pope seems excessive, I'd downgrade one to McCarthy. Midfield looks perfect, would leave that as is. I'd probably switch out Jota rather than double up with Jimi. I have Doherty and Stevens over Egan and Boly though they are all decent picks, rest of my defence is the same as you.

A bit of a strategy shift here - I'm considering going with only TAA from Liverpool for the next few fixtures in vFPL. Very risky I know (mainly due to Salah's high ownership), but we are seeing other premium attackers performing consistently well (KDB, Auba, Kane) and they all have better runs of fixtures than Liverpool.

Salah is the top scorer in the game as expected, but he isn't as clinical in away matches and 4 of his next 6 are on the road. Also getting rid of him gives me so much cash to play with...

I'm in a similar position, my trying to decide between Salah and Ayew (1ft) or Fernandes and Vardy (for a hit) which would leave me with just TTA as Pool cover. OR is 86 so am edging towards playing safe, but if you need to make up ground going Pool mid less is worth a punt.

      Pope (Button)
      TTA, Alonso, AWB, Lescelles, (Saiss)
      Mane, KDB, Perez (Saka, Hayden)
      Kane, Rashford, Ayew

it all depends on how klopp sees it. if he wants to set premier league records for points, he wont be rotating a lot. if he sees it as preparation for next season, then there will be plenty of rotation for TAA by gomez and williams the youngster.

I'm actually pretty close to you in the ranks (84th), but I've mainly gotten there by playing a bit more aggressively, so why not continue?

This is going to be a tough decision. Thankfully I have another day to think it through.

If there is no news about additional GW's being added before the GW37 deadline, I would concentrate on getting a playing 15 otherwise you are going to be in big trouble if a mega GW38 is announced before that deadline.

If we do get news, I'm not keen on the City defensive double up. In fact I don't think you need another defender, you already have a good starting 10, so I'd get a cheap defender (Taylor or Lescelles), downgrade Cantwell to Hayden (or Saka) which would give you enough ITB bank to get your choice of Alli, Richarlison or Mahrez, or if you not keen on that you can do B with Doherty (or Alonso if you fancy a punt)

cheers mate, thanks for the thougths Alli is in my mind but not mahrez as city there will be tons of rotation playing 3 games a week...the thought on laporte and ederson was that they seem to be the most nailed...laporte is fit and need matches to gain sharpness so i see him starting most matches. But you are right Doherty might be a good shout

Mahrez would be a punt, I like the Alli option but only if you can do it for free using your GW37 and GW38 FT's, otherwise Doherty.

the only way i could get alli is if i have two defenders of 4.1. One would be Hanly of Norwich not sure who the other one would be. i will keep cantwell as surely one of the other 7 will be missing due rotation and they have good fixtures and motive to play. Who else would you have for 4.1? Tanganga?

When did they say that ? If GW38 is going to be a zero pointer then that leaves only two options extra GW's being added or FPL is over for the season.

Any help with a possible transfer? got two banked so going to lose on of I don’t use it.

    Current team

    Leno
    TAA Boly Lord
    KDB Salah Bruno Barnes
    Auba Jimi DCL

    Martin Cantwell Lascelles Simpson

I’ve got a wildcard left so I can use that before hitting Bench boost later or in 37 if it does turn out to be a joke of a massive GW38 so I don’t need to replace Martin.

    Cheers for any ideas

That is up there in my thoughts. Not sure I’m ready for double united attack but very hard to argue with Rashfords ppg and those fixtures. I only really have Auba in case they get an immediate DGW or even play their outstanding extra city in its own GW. You’re right though Auba is why I’m stuck on doing anything will give it some thought.

Time is running out fast to WC in GW37, then BB GW38, the GW37 deadline is only three days away ! With two FT's I'd replace Simpson and Martin, then if an announcement that no more GW are going to be added comes before the GW38 deadline you will be well placed to BB. Have you got any money in the bank ?

Unfortunately I’ve no money in the bank. So could only replace one of Martin or Simpson by downgrading someone else. I was thinking I could wildcard nest week if needed but you’re right it would have to be now! I may downgrade Leno and upgrade Simpson I think. Thanks for your help!

See above - BB38 should be a non-runner as GW38 will be zero points for everyone

You'd need a Mega-GW39 announcement to engage BB - but if they can do a GW39 then they have the ability to add extra GW's which again lessens the likelihood of a Mega-GW (i.e. why stop at one extra GW)

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Ah I didn’t know that. If 38 is confirmed as a zero pointer and they are saying that there will be an announcement on further fixtures I agree it will finish after 38 or there will be multiple GW. there’s no reason to do a massive 39. Thanks Maximus that helps

      2. Wild Rover
        • 13 Years
        3 years, 11 months ago

I'm not so sure it's that cut and dry. Yes they do say that each week will be zero points, but GW38 starts on 17th May and they also say that 'We will make a further announcement on any fixtures scheduled for after 17 May, 2020.'

They don't say that the announcement will be after 17 May, so they could make an announcement before and once gw38 is open it could stay open indefinitely.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          3 years, 11 months ago

Don't think we'll ever have the luxury of cut & dry information for another while yet unfortunately which is why BB38 *should* be a non-runner, rather than BB38 *is a definite* non-runner

But FPL did state in this article that for everyone GW38 will be a zero-pointer: https://www.premierleague.com/news/1646851 - so the logical interpretation is that Mega-GW38 is ruled out here (*unless *they go back on their word that GW38 will be zero points for everyone)

Mega-GW39 is a possibility of course, but by definition that means they do have the ability to add extra gameweek/s, so why stop at one extra gameweek...

So basically the possibilities look like being:
          1. Extra Gameweeks added (if games actually go ahead in the real world)
          2. FPL Season finishes with the closure of GW38 (regardless of whether or not games go ahead in the real world)

i.e. - Any form of "Mega" GW looks extremely unlikely based on what FPL communicated above

      3. DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 11 months ago

I think the biggest issue the game has is with the BB and TC chips that are still held by many (myself included). In fairness those chips should only really count in a big DGW like they traditionally are. Having them live for 7-8 weeks is not in the spirit of the game. This is why they need to go 39,40 etc. if at all possible.

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 14 Years

In all likelihood I'd expect the GW38 deadline will be kept and GW38 will be run until all matches are played, i.e a bumper multiple-GW. FPL Towers don't have to make any changes to the gameweek structure in this case.

          1. DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy
            • 10 Years
            3 years, 11 months ago

I guess in that case you play your chip(s) before and in 38 and hope. FPL towers will effectively be damned with whatever they do.

If FPL comes back with a mega 38 who do you captain? Im guessing KDB would win a poll with having the extra game.

I think if the FPL season ends after GW38 then the entire season should be removed from FPL history. There would be too much left unfinished in terms of chips etc. for anyone to fairly have a rank, be it good or bad.

I also think it will sit badly with most managers if FPL are not able to record the season if it ends up getting completed in reality. If someone like Ragabolly can work the magic he does it should not be beyond FPL to produce something for a one-off solution.

I suspect they have their motives for providing no information on a finishing format yet. In fairness they may be waiting as long as possible for more information themselves, but they could quite easily at least set out the scenarios they will follow e.g if Premier League do X we will do Y.

Germany's top football league - the Bundesliga - can return this month behind closed doors after Angela Merkel confirmed it had been given government approval.

The league will decide the exact return date tomorrow, with the weekend of 16-17 May a possibility.

Germany has banned large events with crowds until 24 October, so games will be behind closed doors, but the DFL has developed a health and safety plan that would see only about 300 people or near the pitch during matches, to minimise the risk of infection.

The Germans have got the Coronavirus under control from a similar peak of case numbers as the UK (5887 to 5517 rolling 7 day average) they are now averaging around a 1000 a day, the UK still has a 4835 rolling average number of cases for the last 7 days. So their cases numbers have dropped over 80% from it's peak, the UK has only dropped just over 12.5%

If the Premier League didn't restart then the results of all matches for the 19-20 Season will be null and void and will be erased from the official records including Leicester's record 9-0 win at Southampton. What a blow for Leicester.
