Lampard edges out Aguero in the final of our World Cup of FPL tournament

Our World Cup of FPL tournament has come to a conclusion, with Fantasy Football Scout readers voting Frank Lampard as the greatest Fantasy asset of all time.

The current Chelsea boss edged out Sergio Aguero to scoop that accolade, polling 52.64% of the vote in his match-up with the Argentine striker.

Lampard had previously seen off Branislav Ivanovic, Patrice Evra, Gareth Bale, Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah to reach the final of our user-driven competition.

The contest started back in March as we polled the Fantasy Football Scout userbase on 32 of the leading FPL players from the game’s 18-year history.

A group stage format initially played out before 16 assets were whittled down to our two finalists via knockout round head-to-heads.

Over 25,000 votes were cast over our two-month tournament, with a thousand of those coming in our Lampard v Aguero face-off – so a big thank you to you all for taking part.

Aguero had overcome Alexis Sanchez, Petr Cech, Leighton Baines, Luis Suarez and Thierry Henry en route to his showdown with Lampard.

The top-scoring FPL asset of the 2010s fell at the final hurdle against his counterpart from the previous decade, however.

Perhaps fittingly, Lampard had earned a place in the end-of-season Dream Team on more occasions than any other player in FPL history.

The retired midfielder achieved that feat seven times between 2002/03 and 2009/10, the first five of which fell in quick succession.

Lampard set a then-record FPL points total of 284 in the last of those seasons, with that tally subsequently being beaten by Suarez and Salah.

Final Results

  • Frank Lampard – 52.64%
  • Sergio Aguero – 47.36%

He was. I remember taking him out of my team the GW he scored 4 against Villa at Stamford Bridge. Think it was my first season playing FPL. Probably should try and get over it.

Will there be a Pukki party now he is back from injury in virtual fpl? I'm really tempted to get him instead of Pérez even though it will cost me two transfers (I have two free) and a formation change. He got an assist and was the player with most involment in attack in a 1-1 draw against Leicester in my Friendlies game. However Pérez also got an assist and 3 bonus points...

Tricky. I'm not sure the fixtures are there for Norwich: Newcastle don't concede many goals, and then it's Wolves and Man City.

From today's Sporting Life Paper Talk:

Liverpool will reassure any club that raises a concern about Jurgen Klopp selecting a youth team in the club's remaining Premier League fixtures that the claims are absurd and he will play his strongest line-up in every game in the event of a restart.

Agreed I don't think the players should be forced to play either for as long as social distancing is needed either, that is not possible in football and there is no test that will show if other players that they come into contact with have recently contracted Coronavirus.

It's funny how people are criticising the bottom 6 clubs in saying they're only interested in preserving their PL status (i.e. money) when the only reason the league hasn't already been cancelled is due to.... money.

Deserved winner and the GOAT without a doubt. Cannot believe Aguero reached the final knocking out Suarez and Henry along the was and even was a competition for Lamps in the final. He can be a brilliant player in real life but in FPL his season totals are not all that and it was never the case that he was essential to own over a season like Lampard, Henry, Ronaldo, RVP and Suarez.

I'm back to my normal team in VFPL, and have some tricky fixtures.

    Pope
    TAA, Alonso, AWB, Saiss
    KDB, Fernandes, Perez
    Auba (C), Rashord, Jimenez

    Button, Saka, Hayden, Lescelles

    0.9 ITB, 1 FT

Anything worth a hit ? Like

Saka to Snodgrass (bench Perez v mci)

    or

Lescelles to Egan (bench Perez v mci)

Can't be sure. I had a good conversation with Deadstar about it yesterday:

      https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2020/05/09/using-the-per-90-tool-to-assess-fpl-midfielders-with-the-best-goal-threat/?hc_page=1&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_21832864

We don't agree on the main subject - I think there will be a mega GW38 and he thinks more GWs will be added. But it seems we do agree that the other one might be right. And one thing is for sure, if there is a mega-38 then those who play their BB on that week have a massively unfair advantage.

I won't let you get away with that, fence-sitter. You have to go with one of null and void or current positions stand.

For the record (and I think you know this already) I'm with you with the idea that we'll see no more of season 19/20 - and FPL will go with the EPL on what happens next. If they finish the season with Liverpool as champions the the current FPL#1 will be declared winner - if they void the season then the FPL season will be voided, and you will get your ML money back despite the fact that you quit in, when was it, August ;)?

Ok ill go with null and void . Just based on that being the fairest option out of the 2 . I do think GW38 mega has weight but i am sticking to my own made up theory that they will concentrate on getting the game ready for next season and i don't think they will have time to finish.

If my prediction goes wrong , this wasn't me. I was hacked

Sure. As I've said to PH I'm in the season will be cancelled camp, if I'm forced to choose - I think that's more likely than any. But think if the season isn't finished then they'll go into 38. But, like I say, uncharted territory - so anything could happen.

Yep that's fair 🙂 . I think there's a chance they will do a big GW38 but I'm (perhaps stupidly) thinking they would also move the deadline to allow people to change their teams/activate chips etc. I can't think of anything more controversial than continuing the game but giving no one the opportunity to actually do anything to their teams. Of course that could happen but Wow! I'd be fuming with them in this approach.

That's a good point. I never considered that they might just move the GW38 deadline. That's probably the simplest thing (for them) that they could do to keep the game going.

              GW38 deadline: TBC

From the rules - "Deadlines are subject to change and will be 1 hour before the kick-off time in the first match of the Gameweek."

Although obviously they have 'broken' the part about them being 1 hour before kick off time.

To go one further, they could have delayed all game week deadlines from game week 30! The programming obviously allows that but they've clearly decided to play the game out. Too late for anything like that.

Why would they put anything out if they don't know themselves though? No point saying they will have a mega gw if it only leaves them with 3 weeks to get next season up and running.

I would do nothing. GW38 will be over and done, when this thing restarts they will just add a few GWs. I would say each team playing 2 times a week, we aill probably have 5-6 new GWS. So, if you play your chips you´re f***** big time

The default option is when the fixtures get announced they go in GW38. The rules say the overall league stops in GW38 so, if they follow the rules, this is the only option. FPL Towers have a history of not bothering to come up with innovative solutions when unusual things happen - they stick to the rules. This situation is unprecedented, though - so it's anyone's guess. But it would be out of character for them to put in some extra gameweeks.

It's is going to be tears. They have already given out a statement that includes GW38 so there is no need for them to provide anything more before the GW38 deadline, unless it contradicts what they have already stated (which would be controversial). So I expect they won't.

So obviously my FH team did great last night and now I'm in the top 50, but I think the one thing it taught me was to never doubt Salah. Obviously I sold him because of the upcoming 3 away games knowing fully that he would haul against Norwich. That was all part of the FH plan - I would have only gotten 54 points (well below average) had I not used my FH.

But now that I'm much higher in the ranks, maybe it's time to play it safe and bring Salah back? He could easily do well in these next games, but I'd have to rip my team apart and take a hit or two to get him back. Alternatively, I still haven't replaced Kane, so I could go with Firmino if I really wanted to cover Liverpool's attack. Maybe I should do that and just bite the bullet until my 2nd WC is available?

Thanks for your help with my FH yesterday, I had no Robbo so didn't score as many as you (91) but have moved up to 54 OR. I'm doing Kane to Auba, and am going to stay Salah free from now up until GW20 when Pools fixtures turn. I expect Salah will continue to score well despite the fixtures, but to get him I would have to lose Fernandes, and downgrade a forwards to Ayew. Unless you've got plenty of MITB you would have to do something similar, so the question you need to ask yourself is it worth downgrade elsewhere to get Salah. For me it comes down to who will score more Salah and Ayew or Fernandes and either Vardy or Rashford, I'm backing the latter.

    ON VFPL.....
Is there any index which shows individual player performance history game by game?
(as there is in the real game when you hit player info and it gives history and next fixtures)
    Thank you...

Thank you for your response and thank you for your brilliant game. It's kept me occupied for many an hour while the real thing is suspended.
I hope you find a way to keep it going in future seasons, perhaps with real commercial success as well, if that's what you wish to do.

Anyone going to give Bundesliga fantasy a try?
I guess it will be hard for people to manage it along with vFPL but I'm planning to do both!

I might since the games should be shown on TV here (USA). It would make watching them much more fun.

I found this quite amusing so I hope you do too. I emailed FPL to ask two questions (kept in simple but in relation to GW38):

    1. Can a game week deadline be moved even after the original set time has passed?
    2. Can fixtures be added into a game week after the deadline has passed?

    They replied:

Thanks for the email. These questions aren't covered in the rules as fixture changes are decided by the Premier League. We can't comment on hypothetical situations as any decisions made would be dependent on the specifics of that particular situation. Sorry we can't be of more assistance.

    Thanks FPL! 🙂

I replied again and they simply said they understand the uncertainty is frustrating but further statements will be made when more information is available.

I didn't expect anything significant of course but it just shows with less than a week left of the final deadline it's still anyone's guess what is actually going to happen with FPL.

Nice and vague and very FPL-like response.

Also they've already added a fixture into a GW after the deadline has passed this season with the rearranged Man City/West Ham match. I'm surprised they didn't remember this (Not that surprised).

Man City vs West Ham was a bit different, it was scheduled for GW 26 and remained in GW 26. Very different from having a team with no scheduled games for a gameweek suddenly having a game.

It is different yeah but the processes are still similar.

GW26 was 'closed'. GW38 will be too.

The game was rearranged in what would be GW26. If no GWs are added the same applies for GW38.

Regardless of where the fixture came from it was still added in post deadline.

This is true. And this was only possible because GW26 was a long one. It's very unusual because of the lead times for policing etc that a game can be announced and played in the same gameweek, unless that gameweek is a long one. In GW26 they could do it. In GW38 they can do it.

There's a big difference between having managers lock in their teams with players having no matches and then suddenly having 8 and City playing West Ham when teams are locked in and them still having a game vs West Ham when fixtures are rearranged.

FPL aren't stupid and they know their game! There was an outcry when a fixture got postponed due to some wind, imagine the outrage if however many games suddenly appeared in GW 38 after people locked their teams in.

I think people are vastly overthinking it, FPL aren't trying to trick you or slip in a massive DGW when you're not looking.

Most likely scenario - Extra gameweeks are added.
Next most likely - Game stops at 38
Very unlikely but possible - Mega 38 announced before the deadline
Extremely unlikely - FPL spring a Mega 38 post deadline.

Honest advice is just relax and see what comes up.

I agree with @ROTATION'S alter ego. Fpl are probably frustrated themselves about this. Imo, fpl is finished on Sunday or game weeks added. Can't see mega gameweek at all. PL itself, could be curtailed too.

Aye I agree with you. I'm just saying that the basic premise of the situation is the same. The difference is how big the impact is. With this being such a big impact that's why they may actually do things a bit different, but only because of how big the impact is. It's still a similar situation when you look at the basic details.

The difference between GW26 and GW38 was that in GW 26 the game was added before the GW had finished, so the usual post-gw processing wasn't done yet. Under normal circumstances GW38 will finish this Sunday and they will finish the gameweek, doing their usual post-gw processing like deciding the official fpl cup final with a coin toss. Seems strange that they can revert that process. And if they can't revert then they have to decide before Sunday.

Under normal circumstances you'd be correct. under bomb-scare circumstances the gameweek continued until all matches had been completed. Under global pandemic circumstances we still wait to find out.

The content and timing of the second stage of adjustments will depend on the most up-to-date
assessment of the risk posed by the virus. The five tests set out in the first chapter must justify
changes, and they must be warranted by the current alert level.
They will be enabled by the programmes set out in the next chapter and, in particular, by
continuing to bolster test and trace capabilities, protect care homes and support the clinically
extremely vulnerable. It is possible that the dates set out below will be delayed if these conditions
are not met. Changes will be announced at least 48 hours before coming into effect.
To aid planning, the Government's current aim is that the second step will be made no earlier than
Monday 1 June, subject to these conditions being satisfied. Until that time the restrictions currently
in place around the activities below will continue.

Badly worded by me. They haven't given it the 'green light', that is the Independent's wording. They have said it can go ahead after that date if the conditions are right and we are a long way off the conditions being right, both in health and footballing matters.

That's too simplistic a way to think about it.

Say for example a crap team playing a top team. Chances are they are going to lose that fixture regardless of where they play, but if they play at home they have a slight change. Not a good chance but a slight chance none-the-less.

If they play in a neutral ground that slight chance is all but gone. And it's those crap teams that need every slight chance they can get. The good teams not so much.

Hmm maybe but surely a case of swings and roundabouts as say Vila had to play away at Man City but now at neutral ground then they will have better chance of result.

This is what I mean though. Whether it's a neutral ground or an away ground the chances are they are going to get killed by City. It's only when at home will they get any sort of real swing in their favour.

Even if this is not the case though, if that's the way the team thinks then that's what they think. We can't really argue with subjectivity.

Maybe but still thinks it all evens itself out as say villa city as an example. Villa no chance at city but at neutral they have sporting chance of getting something from the game.

Well this is it. It's all down to opinion.

If there were 2 scenarios. Ignore the fact villa would probably lose all 4. If you were told that Villa had got 3 points from one of these scenarios which one would you bet on? It would be the former for me, possibly the latter for you, but what we think doesn't matter, it's what the club thinks of their chances.

                    Villa vs Man City
                    Liverpool vs Villa

                    or

Agree. If premier league does resume it should be at neural grounds otherwise you’ll get loads of fans congregating around the grounds, guaranteed. The only reason Villa, Brighton and Watford are opposing the neutral grounds is because they think if they do this then the league will be cancelled and they will massively benefit from that decision. Just seems a massive coincidence that the only opposing teams to this so far are teams in trouble at bottom of the league. They can site safely etc but that is just a ruse.

You’re missing the point as what they lose in home advantage they will be gain when they would not have have had home advantage. As I said, Brighton want season to be cancelled and will vote against neutral grounds as this will help that happen. Believe it.
