Allsvenskan Fantasy

Fantasy Allsvenskan Defenders

After Meltens’ review of Goalkeepers, it is time to take a look at defenders ahead of the Allsvenskan season. Unlike many other Fantasy games, the Allsvenskan Fantasy game heavily favours defenders over attacking options. Not just in terms of value, but also in absolute terms: eight players still in the game scored 150 points or more last year – whereof half of those are defenders! While focusing on defenders in this article, it is interesting to note that no forward still in the game reached 150+ points.

As a result, the “Park the bus” chip – which provides x2 for all defenders in a chosen GW – is often the season-defining chip in Allsvenskan Fantasy, and many defenders are viable captain options most weeks.

Two teams stood out last season as the main sources for returns from the back: Djurgården and Norrköping

Djurgården

The champions returned an impressive 16 clean sheets in 30 games. Captain Marcus Danielsson was the heart of the defence but has left for China. There is however much speculation around a return on loan if the Chinese league fails to start due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The prospect of Djurgården defenders is heavily boosted if Danielsson would come back. Aslak Witry (7.0) is the most expensive defender in the game having registered 3 goals and 7 assists last year but his value is debatable, however, as Elliot Käck (6.0) is available for a full million less, being on set-piece duties and having registred 6 assists last year. If Danielsson is not available for Djurgården again,  Jakob Une-Larsson (6.5) could be partnered by former Sweden international Erik Berg (5.5) who is ongoing rehabilitation for an injury that kept him out for the majority of last season and the season before that. Should Danielsson return, Berg is likely to move up to play as a central midfielder and could prove great value for money!

Main picks: Käck (6.0), Witry (7.0)

Norrköping

After a slow start, Norrköping really picked up pace last season and equalled Djurgården for clean sheets (16).

The highest scoring defender in the game last season was Lars Grogh Gerson (6.5) with 174 points, 4 goals and 5 assists. Having been a million cheaper last season, Rasmus Lauritsen’s (6.5) 5 goals and 154 points has seen him increase in price and join Grogh Gerson at 6.5. Having offered a cheaper route last year, Lauritsen is only chosen by 11.9% of the teams compared to Krogh Gerson’s 31.5% ownership. At the same price point, Krogh Gerson seems like the better option as he’s on set-piece duties and from time to time penalties too. For those with a slightly lower budget, Dagerståhl (6.0) seems like the last nailed Norrköping defender and comes in at 6.0 – which is still a heavy price tag.

Main pick: Krogh Gerson (6.5)

Malmö

Malmö actually got 15 clean sheets last season, but their squad depth and rotation when combining Europa League with Allsvenskan meant only Eric Larsson (6.5) took part in all 15 with Rasmus Bengtsson (6.5) behind in second with 10. Those following the Europa League closely, however, noted that new coach and former AC Milan player Jon Dahl Tomasson favoured Anel Ahmedhodzic (5.5) to partner Bengtsson in both of the round of 16 games against Wolfsburg. Having spent last season on loan in the Danish Superligaen, Ahmedhodzic seems like the value pick from the Malmö defence – something registered by 25% of all submitted teams to date.

Häcken

Adam Andersson (6.0) started last season with a bang and quickly became a popular pick. This year all of the nailed Häcken defenders are priced at 6.0, meaning both Ekpolo and Lindgren are 0.5 cheaper than last year. For an attacking side that kept 11 clean sheets last year, they could all become viable options.

AIK

The best defensive force over the last few years seems a bit shaky at the minute. Karol Mets (6.5) is providing a decent option but there is a lot of uncertainty around the other spots. Not even Per Karlsson (6.0) seems completely nailed as Robin Tihi (not added to the game as he is still to sign a professional contract) was preferred in central defence in the must-win cup game against Kalmar. Many were curious about Erick Otienno (5.5) who was the standout pick in AIK’s pre-season, but an injury on the same day the league was announced to return means a spell on the side-line for 6-8 weeks. That could, however, open up a left wingback slot for Eric Kahl (4.0), who many AIK supporters think will start ahead of Rasmus Lindkvist (5.5). Having said that: keep a close eye on both Tihi and Kahl!

IFK Göteborg

IFK Göteborg’s Wernersson (6.0) has seen a 1.0 increase from last year having registered 6 assists and 12 clean sheets, but teammate Calisir (5.5) had 2 goals and 2 assists last year and will likely be preferred by those picking premiums from the other clubs. Da Graca (5.0) and Toko (5.0) could offer even cheaper options into a solid defence which should be further strengthened by the return of Jakob Johansson (5.5) in midfield. Johansson was a regular starter for the Swedish national team and scored the only goal in the playoff that sent Sweden to the World Cup in 2018, beating Italy. Johansson injured himself ahead of the tournament and has since been struggling with injuries playing for French side Rennes, but is known for his hard defensive work which could prove gold for those investing in the Göteborg defence.

Other picks

Jakob Voelkerling Persson (4.0) is looking likely as a starting CB for Helsingborg, who together with the Swedish national team captain Granqvist (5.0) and Figueroa (4.5) are the only CB options, although Figueroa normally plays as a left-back.

Simon Sandberg (5.5) managed 7 assists last year in an attacking Hammarby side that struggled to keep clean sheets – if they manage to shut up shop he can prove the be a great pick (selected by 22%) but as for now we will have to rely on attacking returns for points. The same goes for Kalmars’ Aliti (5.0) who registered 2 goals and 3 assists but only 3 clean sheets.

Falkenbergs’ Jacob Ericsson (5.0) broke the 100 point barrier with 5 assists and 7 CS and looks like one of the more appealing mid-price options again this year.

Johan Larsson (5.5) is an attacking full-back that was part of the Elfsborg side that won Allsvenskan in 2012. He has now returned after a short session in Ligue 1 and a longer spell in Bröndby

The Allsvenskan premium defenders are as always appealing, but who are you picking? And which of the cheaper options are you turning to initially? I’m personally looking at 4 at the back given the plethora of options – let’s see if it works out.

Great read thanks Hansel, I've shuffled around my squad many times but keep coming back to 5 at the back for the first three fixtures, the value is outstanding. It may mean a WC in GW 4 but a 5-3-2 over the first three may just give me an edge, we'll see.

        Hi Wolves

Gerson. Lauritsen, Kack, E Larsson and Da Graca

with Rieks, Nalic and Kacaniklic in the middle

It's a punt for the first three GWs and if it fails then Wc GW 4

That's an extremly strong defence! No worries about the Norrköping doubble-up? From what I understand, they might roll out a 4-4-2 this season, probably meaning less attacking threat from Gerson. Also, Haksabanovic seems to have been given more set-pieces. They also face AIK and Djurgården in the first 3 games. Who have you put in goal?

I've gone a little cheaper with Wernersson, Da Graca, Käck, Berg and Ahmedhodzic, with the latter two minor doubts regarding theire place in the starting XI. That still allows me to have a strong midfield.

Yeah I've been reading what you and Meltens have been saying about Gerson and it's a concern for sure but a risk worth taking early doors I think. I will also have two free transfers by GW 3 and it may be that I ship one or maybe both of them for that game.

Goalkeepers are my weak spot as I've went with 2 x 4.5m in Jonsson and Johansson, maybe that's something I address in GW 3 as well,

Still a strong back 5 you have there Bob and the latter two are worth the risk to start off with freeing up some cash.

Sounds like a good plan, although it's always a bit risky having to plan for specific transfers. Having both Gerson and Lauritsen against Kalmar in the first game will be dynamite!

I've never tried 2 x 4.5 keepers since it would always leave me with a decision to make and a potential benching headache. It seems like a nice idea though, and I'm not looking forward to playing Hägg Johansson every game.

With the schedule giving us 3 games in 8 days, Erik Berg is now out of my team since there's slim chance he'll play more than 1-2 of them, and defenitly not the first two games which are the most interesting ones. I could eighter do a straight swap for Sandberg, giving me at least two Hammarby players. Or I could downgrade Berg to Voelkerling-Persson and swap Hägg to Dahlin for the first 3 games. I could also downgrade Berg to Okumu (4.5) and upgrade Hägg to Anestis, but that means I'd have to remove another Göteborg player, likely Da Graca to another 5.0 defender.

My first drafts had Dahlin and the first three look very good for clean sheets for him, I think he's a great pick for the first three. I only opted for the two x 4.5m as I needed an additional 1.0m. Like you, in other games I usually have one decent keeper but I'm okay with switching these two 4.5m around each week for a while, my expectations of them are low and if I get five clean sheets from the first ten fixtures I'd be over the moon.

I should probably try to fit Dahlin in somehow, it would feel a lot better to have him as a set and forget keeper than Hägg Johansson. It would leave me with a defence of Käck, Da Graca, Wernersson, Ahmedhodzic, Voelkerling-Persson. If V-P plays, he's got decent early fixtures, so hopefully it could work out.

Big thanks to Hansel for this superb round-up! I wasn't aware of Voelkerling-Persson, he very much seems like a viable option to free up some cash. From what I understand, Helsingborg are having a bit of a midfield crisis, which could even open up a spot at defensive midfield for V-P, which would further increase his chances of playing. I'm more sceptical of the cheap AIK defender, as the competition for the spots there are much tougher.

Hansel will be covering mids while I’m looking at forwards but I’ve had a few glances at Max Svensson as well, think he could do well. I think we might need to plan for rotation central with most teams though so keep that in mind if money’s tight, the bench needs to be in good shape!

Thanks and yes I saw the earlier comments about the first three gameweeks being played in nine days. I'm thinking given the fixtures Svensson will likely play more minutes than Nalic and Malmo do seem to have a wealth of mids. And that 0.5m could help bolster my bench which is pretty thin.

Nalic will get gametime, but except for AC the Malmö midfield will be a nightmare to predict. I wouldn't risk 7.5-9-0 on players like Nalic, Rieks or Traustasson until we have more information. Svensson seems like a better option, or Jonathan Levi. Ajdarevic has been praised by the managers and could be a dark horse this season, but probably not a gamble you'd wanna make early on.

I'm sort of on the opposite side with Nalic, think he could be a steal at 7.5m! 😉 That said you probably can not expect him to start more than 2/3 of the games but with plenty of subs and rotation he still has a great chance of points most games in my opinion. He's loved by the bonus point system and could be looking at a role as a number ten on a semi-regular basis...

Everyone will get rotated (more or less) in the first three GWs with that little space between the games though. Kind of cooled my interest in Söder because of the initial schedule but upped it in Sargon Abraham.

Hehe, I expect Nalic to be one of the biggest traps of the game. I know he was prefered in the Europa League games, but with competition from AC, Antonsson, Traustasson, Rakip and Rieks I can't see him getting any regular game time. He had a good start last season but his stats in the second half of the season was far from impressive, and his stats average in the end.

Why the cooled interest in Söder? Do you see him as a rotation risk?

An easy downgrade/switch if it pans out badly though 🙂

Yup Poya has said multiple times that Söder can’t play three times in a week. No way he starts all three and if they can spare him minutes in general, I think they’ll try initially. Long term when it becomes more one game a week he’s a very interesting option again for me!

Thanks a lot for that info about Söder! That makes the forward selection a little easier for me. Seems like Göteborg have offered a contract to Forrem, which could be bad news for Da Graca. Also, Wernersson is being chased by foreign clubs.

And btw, Nahir Besara is back at Örebro! Was a magnificent fantasy player a few years ago, will be intresting to see his price tag!

I have somewhat of a soft spot for Besara as a Hammarby-supporter but not sure how good he is nowadays. Think they might price him a bit too high given his history but definitely one to keep track off!
With AIK and Djurgården in the first two GWs it's a complete stay away from the off unless he's like 7.5m haha.

I didn't really care much for him last season, but he's in my team now, much due to the fixtures, and will be for the first 3 games at least. Helsingborg were disappointing last season and scored very few goals, but I expect them to improve this season with a few more attacking options in van den Hurk, Jönsson and Mbo.

Svensson is young and I expect him to improve as well. His tally of 117p last season was equal to Irandust, and he had a PPG average of a decent 4.52. In that price bracket he's one of the best options IMO.

I don't rate Helsingborg as a team, yet here I am sitting on 3 Helsingborg players atm...

Back in early May coach Mellberg said he only really had Voelkerlin Persson and Granqvist as regular CBs, with Figeroa also able to do a good job centrally. https://fotbolldirekt.se/2020/05/08/mittbackskris-i-hif-soker-interna-alternativ

Randrup hasn't done that many games as a CB and Figueroa very rarely plays on the right so chances are good for playing time for JVP (unless they sign someone), though he might not get all games he should still get quite a lot hopefully 🙂

Helsingborg seem to have all kind of problems with injuries right now, both in defence and central midfield. I might be a biased owner but I expect JVP to start, probably as a CB but could even end up as a defensive midfielder.

    Allsvenskan mini-league:

I set up an Allsvenskan Classic and H2H league for the lads on Koh Samui where I live hoping to entice them into something new but they are all consumed with their FPL teams and the EPL restart and they think I'm just trying to distract them so it's just me in the Allsvenskan Koh Samui leagues. If anyone would like to join me I'd be most grateful, the codes are below.

      Sure, I'm in 🙂

How's the team coming along? Would be nice if we could get more games to plan ahead for but I guess a lot is going to be quite different this season. I find myself drifting towards a Tank/Kaca double up as long as Tankovic stays, which to be honest we don't know now at all with his contract running out at the end of June. I guess it will depend on what clubs come sniffing, he himself has said it's all open either way. On the one hand it creates a captaincy conundrum but on the other, both are likely going to score a bunch of points like Mané/Salah.

Wow, that combination looks lethal! I might concider the same further on, but the early Malmö fixtures made me go for AC instead of Tankovic. The contract situation is an issue for many players, especially those on loan like Haksabanovic, so I'm staying out of those player to begin with.

    GW 4-6 games announced! https://www.fotbollskanalen.se/allsvenskan/klart-sa-spelas-omgang-4-6-i-allsvenskan-och-superettan/
No exact dates yet though but it's clear that AIK's tough schedule continues with Malmö at home in GW4 followed by Göteborg away.

Big thanks Meltens, I completely missed this! Back to the drawing board for me, but at least it will make things more clear now, especially for me who usually plan for at least 6-8 gameweeks.

Söder and Khariashvili are apparently injury doubts for the start of the season, with the latter out of training for this entire week. Even if he'll be fit for the start, I find it very doubtful that he'll go straight in and play 3 games in 8 days. Kujovic popped up in my mind yesterday when I realized he, unfit, scored 4+3 in only 281 minutes last season. He could potentially be on pens as well, and with Djurgårdens decent first 3 games now followed by home games against Kalmar and Helsingborg, that switch is a no-brainer for me.

What's more worrying is Hammarby playing Mjällby and Varberg in GW 4 and 5. I realized I could make a doubble switch of Max Svensson/Levi + Ring to Tankovic and Isak Jansson (very hyped 4.5 Kalmar midfielder). Would you do that switch for an attacking Hammarby doubble-up and avoid a Djurgården doubble-up? And if so, would you take out Max Svensson or Levi? Cheers!

Yeah it does mean we have a lot more to go on and some teams have it really tough, while others get a pretty smooth start. I saw that article about Söder and Khara as well, very troublesome for investing in them from the start, I think I'll steer clear for now.

Hammarby's fixtures now look pretty enticing and I think an attacking double up in some way is going to be pretty important. I'm currently on a treble up but it changes daily (Kaca/Bojanic/Jóhannsson). There are drawbacks of course and it means expecting/hoping them to score at least 3 goals most games.

About this Isak Jansson, do we really want to be starting him on a regular basis? I know too little about him, heard something about set-pieces?
I'm kind of starting to doubt Levi given the schedule both in tightness of games but also the opponents, so I guess I'd keep Max Svensson in that case.

Thanks Meltens! I kept tinkering with my team last night and ended up finding a way to keep Ring and still get Tankovic. Leaves me with a midfield of Kacaniklic, Tankovic, Ring, AC and Jansson. Had to downgrade a defender and found no better option than Sandberg, so I suddenly have a triple-up from both Djurgården and Hammarby, combined with a duo from Göteborg and Malmö.

I usually preach that an expensive defence and squad depth is the key to success in Allsvenskan fantasy, and I now kind of lack both. A cheaper defence (6.0, 5.5, 5.5, 5.0, 4.0) now is much due to the fact that many premium defenders like Gerson, Lauritsen and Larsson have a tough schedule, and I can cover theire teams with cheaper options. I also hope that more substitions allowed will mean more game time for cheap squad players.

About Isak Jansson, I know nothing more than that he scored a few goals in pre-season and Kalmar got a decent schedule. He's one of my 4 cheap enablers this season, and I'll be forced to play one of them every game to begin with. Still, I hope that big scores from my premium players will make up for it, and that a premium+cheap duo will score more points than a midpriced duo like Levi and Svensson.

Very solid midfield! What cheap strikers are you looking at to complement that?

Sandberg is returning from a long time-injury so I'd be slightly wary of that https://fotbolldirekt.se/2020/05/21/bajen-kan-redan-ha-stangt-sommarfonstret-vi-har-en-fantastisk-trupp

Right yeah the midfield premiums look enticing this season and some of the budget strikers as well to go along with them! I'm looking at probably going in with a flexible 3-5-2/3-4-3 to account for early rotation. Defenders are a bit tricky given there are question marks surrounding most of them but I don't think I want to start the season without "Allsvenskans TAA" Witry 😉 I'd rather downgrade him if it doesn't work out than try to find the money later on.

Big thanks for that information, I wasn't aware of his injury. I'll probably look for another solution then, or just make a straight swap for Widgren. There arn't many cheap otpions upfront, but Moro feels like a must have given his price and pre-season form. Apart from him, perhaps Ahl-Holmström or Mbo who got some gametime in pre-season as well.

Witry is always an excellent pick, and I'm sure I'll own him later on. No worries about playing 3 at the back? 5-3-2 is historically the most sucessfull formation in allsvenskan fantasy, while the strikers find it more difficult to justify theire price tags. For example, Söder scored 14+4 last season and was the 3rd highest scoring striker, yet there were 5 keepers, 10 defenders and 10 midfielders that outscored him.

Mjällby has a pretty tough schedule to begin with though, are you going to start him or rotate in and out of the bench? Sargon Abraham at 6.0m should get a lot more gametime for Göteborg given the schedule and Söder/Kharaishvili injuries. Same for Alexander Farnerud at 7.0m classed as a midfielder.

Yeah I know but I like the premium mids a lot this season and feel reluctant to not invest in attack at all so I'm trying to find semi-cheap defenders to rotate to get the same points as premium options, will see how that pans out 🙂
I agree in principle though but Söder still helped me personally a lot, especially when I captained him in games he hauled at the end of last season. I feel reluctant to captain defenders barring possibly Witry 😉

The early fixtures for Mjällby are tough as you say, but I don't intend to play Moro unless it's necessary. I expect him to start most games for Mjällby, and that's important to me since I got a few other slightly uncertain starters. I'm not impressed by any striker below 8.5 (no, not even Abraham 😉 ) so I figure I could just as well go for Moro and save some cash. Farnerud is a gamble. He was an absolute key player in my very successful fantasy team 2016, but that was a long time ago and he hasn't been able to reproduce that form since.

I think trying to "cover" a premium defender with a cheaper one from the same team (Da Graca for Wernersson, Ahmedhodzic for Larsson, Berg for Witry etc.) is a common mistake in fantasy. I'm well aware of if, yet I can't seem to stop making that mistake myself. And this season is no exception 🙂

I don't know, there's something about Farnerud that just sits right with me. Maybe it's the fact that he can play almost everywhere in midfield but has been brought in to provide cover for Robin Söder as a striker, I'm a sucker for anyone playing OOP 🙂

Yeah I don't think we can expect cheaper options to provide the same as Wernersson etc., but there's also a case for what the money saved can do in other spots. They can still be good options on their own even though at times, you might want to try to find the extra cash for the upgrade. Malmö will rotate like crazy so in that way, going for the cheaper option will hurt less when they're inevitably benched from time to time.

If you still have FH, WC and BB intact, is the perceived wisdom to use FH for the DGW, then wild card shortly afterwards to set up for the remainder of the season?

I have got all chips but not tempted to use one in this game week.

So long since I've been here but not surprised that I'm more excited for Eliteserien and Allsvenskan than the return of PL.

Gone for a slightly cheaper defence in my first draft although last night I did manage to fit in Martin Olsson who will surely be quality even for a weaker team making my defence:

Olsson, Käck, Eric Larsson, Wernersson, Björnström

Got 3 from Malmö and Göteborg for early fixtures.

      You're very welcome back!

Going for wingbacks is surely a shrewd move, and Käck, Larsson and Wernersson are all solid picks. I'm extremly sceptical about Olsson though, 6.0 is a fortune for a player who hasn't played a game of football for god knows how long? Especially in a team likely to struggle at the bottom of the table. Perhaps a Häcken defender like Adam Andersson could be an option? Got great early fixtures and some set-piece dutys as well. Cheers!

I have to side with Bob on this one, Olsson will have a tough time justifying that price-tag in my opinion. Helsingborg will most likely concede most games and I'm not sure he can make up for it in attacking output.

Käck has become a minor rotation risk given Augustinsson's fine form, I think he'll still get plenty of games but not sure he's a nailed-on starter like most of last season. As long as Eric Berg is out Augustinsson most likely plays CB which makes Käck take up the LB-spot but unless they intend to play Berg in defensive midfield (which they could), Augustinsson will push Käck hard for LB.
