Eliteserien Fantasy season preview – Part 2

The teams who finished in the bottom half of 2019’s Eliteserien table feature tempting fantasy options at various price points. Some teams underperformed, some suffered poor late-season results and some saved themselves from relegation at the last minute. Ranheim and Tromsø were automatically relegated, while Lillestrøm’s 45 year stay in Norway’s top-flight came to an end after they surrendered a 5-2 aggregate lead in the final minutes of their playoff. They’re replaced by Aalesund, Sandefjord and Start, whose fortunes in the coming season could vary wildly. Let’s start by looking at last season’s ninth-placed team.

Brann

One of the league’s most vaunted defences put on a decent if unspectacular show, but the attack struggled for goals in 2019 – only Sarpsborg scored fewer than Brann’s total of 32. Vito Wormgoor’s departure sees Vegard Forren (5.5m) join from Molde. Ralf Fährmann had joined on loan, but left before playing a competitive match. Ali Ahamada (6.0m) looks to have the edge over Håkon Opdal (6.0m) in goal.

Winger Gilbert Koomson (7.0m) struggled for end product last season but is kinder on the budget this year. The more consistent Petter Strand, meanwhile, has seen his price rise to 8.0m. Robert Taylor (7.0m) joins from relegated Tromsø to add depth out wide, while former Lillestrøm man Daniel A. Pedersen (5.5m) is a deep-lying midfield option.

Daouda Bamba (9.0m) will hope to better last season’s tally of seven goals. He’ll be backed up by Marcus Mehnert (6.0m) who has scored goals in his young career but is unproven at this level.

Vålerenga

The capital club spent most of last season in the top half but slumped to a disappointing finish. Dag-Eilev Fagermo replaces Ronny Deila as manager.

Last year’s performances see left-footer Aron Dønnum (8.5m) closer in price to Herolind Shala and Bård Finne (both 9.0m). Fredrik Oldrup Jensen (5.0m) may not offer the greatest fantasy returns but could solidify the midfield.

Matthias Vilhjalmsson (8.0m) will lead the line but wasn’t the most explosive prospect for fantasy managers in his first season in Oslo. At the back, meanwhile, Ivan Näsberg (4.5m) could be a cheap route into the defence while Kristoffer Klaesson (5.0m) is now the clear first choice in goal.

Strømsgodset

Despite spending a substantial part of the season in the relegation zone, Henrik Pedersen’s arrival saw a change in fortunes. Last summer’s key signings Mikkel Maigaard, Lars-Jørgen Salvesen and Moses Mawa (all 8.5m) will look to pick up where they left off; the former providing set-piece expertise and bonus points from midfield and the latter pair a potent striking duo.

Herman Stengel (5.0m) enjoyed his best spell of form for Godset under Pedersen. Young Dane Marcus Mølvadgaard (7.0m) and Latvia international Janis Ikaunieks (6.5m) join Kristoffer Tokstad (6.5m) as the mid-price options in midfield.

Godset are the only surviving team from last season with no defensive or goalkeeping options to cost more than 5.0m – perhaps not surprising for the team who conceded the third most goals, with 54. Prosper Mendy (5.0m) faces a long rehabilitation after a knee injury.

Sarpsborg 08

Sarpsborg recorded only five wins last year and averaged just one goal per game, the lowest in the division. They were saved by their ability to keep games close, drawing half of all their matches, and only losing twice at home.

They’re an intriguing fantasy prospect this time around; new manager Mikael Stahre led AIK to a Swedish double in 2009 and will employ a 3-4-3 formation. Sulayman Bojang (4.5m) could provide exceptional value as a wing-back, with Magnar Ødegaard (5.0m) reverting to centre back.

In central midfield, Anton Saletros (5.0m) looks a popular pick at his price point, while Ole Jørgen Halvorsen and (7.0m) and Mohamed Ofkir (6.5m) could occupy attacking positions. The experienced Mos Abdellaoue (7.5m) will no doubt bag a few goals, but will this be the year that Jørgen Strand Larsen (7.5m) takes the league by storm?

Mjøndalen

Unless defender Sondre Solholm Johansen (5.5m) can retain both the goal threat and penchant for bonus points he showed last season, his price looks a bit steep. Newly signed Marcus Nakkim will compete with Quint Jansen (both 4.5m) for the other spot at the back.

Plenty of focus will be on Tonny Brochmann (7.5m) and captain Christian Gauseth (6.0m) who contributed a combined 13 goals from midfield last term. Lars Olden Larsen (7.0m) could add more of the same having scored nine from midfield for KFUM last season. Fredrik Brustad (6.5) was the hero on the final day as his goal kept Mjøndalen up, but had an otherwise indifferent season.

Sondre Liseth (6.0m) put in plenty of running, but he spends a lot of time in wide positions and even for a budget striker his three goals didn’t set the world alight. New signing Ibrahim Shuaibu (6.0m) hadn’t scored an Eliteserien goal for Haugesund since 2017, but has enjoyed two good loan spells at Kongsvinger since then.

Aalesunds FK

The runaway winners of 2019’s OBOS-ligaen won every home match and 17-goal Niklas Castro (8.5m) was the star of the show. Despite a hefty price tag, no player from the promoted sides features in more fantasy teams at time of writing.

Of the two 4.5m goalkeepers here, Gudmund Kongshavn is currently selected by more fantasy managers, but Lars Bohinen has stated that Andreas Lie will start the season as first choice. One-time FPL budget star Jordon Mutch (6.5m) and youngster Simen Bolkan Nordli (7.0m) bolster a midfield featuring the experienced Peter Orry Larsen and Fredrik Carlsen (both 5.0m).

With Torbjørn Agdestein (6.5m) injured, Sigurd Haugen (6.5m) and the 6’5” Holmbert Fridjonsson (7.5m) are the striking options. All three are proven in Norway’s second tier, with Haugen having spent time at Sogndal, but only Agdestein has had a meaningful impact in Eliteserien before.

Sandefjord

Heavily tipped to go straight back down, Rufo (6.5m) should be key if 2019 OBOS-ligaen runners up Sandefjord are to defy expectations. His seven goals in 2018 weren’t enough to save his side from relegation.

New signings Kristoffer Normann Hansen (6.0m) and Erik Næsbak Brenden (5.5m) are two more midfielders who could be tasked with attacking roles. Two young strikers are on the books; Sivert Gussiås (5.5m) joins from Molde having scored 12 while on loan at Strømmen, while George Gibson (5.0m) has been more prolific in pre-season.

Full backs Brice Wembangomo and Anton Kralj (both 5.0m) are the pricier options at the back, while Lars Grorud (4.5m) looks primed to feature in central defence as he approaches his 37th birthday.

IK Start

Martin Ramsland (7.0m), the scorer of the hat-trick which secured promotion in Lillestrøm’s infamous collapse, is injured to start the season, so Steffen Lie Skålevik (6.0m) returns to the side where he scored 10 goals in 11 games in 2017.

Damion Lowe’s contract was terminated after the defender travelled to the United States for family reasons. He was a key man in Start’s last top-flight season, but Vegard Bergan (4.5m) seems a reasonable replacement having featured heavily for Odd and Bodø/Glimt in the last couple of years. Goalkeeper Jonas Deumeland (4.5m) is still around, having been a good source of save and bonus points in 2018.

Aron Sigurdarson was a driving force behind promotion but has since left for Belgium. Can Kevin Kabran (7.0m), Kasper Skaanes (5.5m) or newly signed Eirik Schulze (6.5m) fill the void? Afeez Aremu (4.5m) is a more defensively minded midfielder, but could be a key player and scored three goals in his last Eliteserien season.

    Thanks for the feedback TallestJohn.

I have had a further tinker and come up with this team.

    Klaesson/(Nilsen)
    Bergan/Bojang/Borchgre/(Sivertsen/4.5*)
    Castro/Hauge/Eikram/Ibrahimaj/(Stengal)
    Borven/James/Ostensen

    0.0 itb.

What do you think? First season so any feedback welcomed.

*I need some suggestions on a nailed 4.5m defender.

Not sure I'd want a Start def. 4.5m - maybe one from Kristiansund?
Of the 4m defs Vogt seems more likely to play than Sivertsen according to predictions: https://www.eurosport.no/fotball/eliteserien/2020/forventede-ellevere-moldes-forsvarskabal-berntsens-hodebry-og-hvem-vraker-horneland_sto7776333/story.shtml
Saletros is another 5m mid option, or Berg at 4.5m to free up £

Thought it said Bjørkan for some reason. Yeah Start defender won't cut it. Overall that defence is less than ideal, needs more solidity. Ideally a 5.5 for a nice price point and added flexibility

Borchgrevink isn't really needed when you have Klaesson. I'd get someone like Solheim for him instead.

Saletros better option than Stengel imo.

Børven good opening fixture but long term I don't think he will be worth the price tag. Odd are going to struggle this year.

Here's my next try. Thanks TJ & MT for suggestions and there's good stuff at Tom The Dud's twitter account!

      Klaesson
      Hanche-Olsen, Desler, Hagen
      Kachi, Furdal, Sandberg, Wolff Eikrem
      Strand Larsen, Kallman, Børven (C)

      Haug, Salétros, Bojang, Borchgrevink

Sold Hauge & bought Børven and sold & bought some other guys too. Børven seems a tad expensive, let's see how he does. The Viking defenders were way too expensive for my taste. How did I end up with three Haugesund players?

      1. MTPockets
          3 years, 10 months ago

Decent. This is me (until I crumble and put Borven back in)

          Klaesson (or Myhra) 4m
          Holmgren-Pedersen, Solheim, Bojang, Ulvestad, Vogt
          Eikrem, Castro, Zachariassen, Sandberg, Saletros
          James, Kinoshita, Strand-Larsen (or Vilhjalmsson)

Like the Kachi and Furdal picks, two exciting players there.

I don't like the VIF treble up. Haug is a waste and as I said above Borch is a bit excessive if you have Klaesson.

You've trebled up on VIF, FKH, Odd and S08. That's almost all eggs in very few baskets.

If you are going for one premium striker, it has to be James ahead of Borven, which I'd find through a defensive downgrade or by moving Kallman/JSL to kinoshita. Odd are predicted for a tougher season so don't feel they warrant the triple up, particularly with Rashani out. I also wouldn't double up on VIF defence.

Thanks all, made some changes, this is my final.

          Klaesson
          Pereira, Desler, Ruud
          Kachi, Furdal, Sandberg, Wolff Eikrem
          Strand Larsen, Kallman, Børven (C)

          Haug, Salétros, Bojang, Vogt

Stuck with three Odd players, nice opening fixtures, checkpoint after that.
Sold Borchgrevink, bought Vogt -> money to bank -> upgraded Hagen to Ruud (set pieces) and got me a überpricey (bleurgh) Viking defender Pereira (~fixtures).
Furdal to Ibrahimaj (set pieces schmet pieces) crossed my mind but you got to have a differential in your team don't you. Or two, Kachi.
Bench is cheap but they are all probable starters so if there is heavy rotation that's fine by me. Although I hate to bench Salétros if he really takes his team's set pieces. Oh well.

          Good luck to all!

Seems to lack balance due to spending over a third of your budget on 3 players.

With the way players are priced this season I can only see long term value in having two premium players.

Personally I see it as James vs Eikrem.

I'd even go a step further and say there's some really good forwards for a lot cheaper than Borven.

Same can be said for midfielders.

I'd want a bit more cover in defence too.

              It's definitely a bold squad.

But like MTPockets has warned me - Bohinen is in the interest of clubs abroad and may not be around for long. Just bear that in mind too.

I am a Noob at this, but good idea not having Eikram and having the heavy hitters up front. More balanced midfield.

I've ended up with a similar selection. For a while I had Borven ahead of James but would prefer Islamovic and one of those two rather than both.
I keep seeing Kinoshita crop up every here and there - for 6m he could be a bargain but I'm put off by Azemi. But if those in the know more so than me think Kinoshita is good to go then it could definitely work.

It's a really lovely midfield. I like those four players and Saletros on the bench is the perfect 5th.

I like Bojang, Desler and Klaesson (I have all three of those players myself...) I'm just personally not sold on Solheim due to his age primarily. I know he's a recent signing jumping the border but I just feel uneasy having him in my team over say Hanche-Olssen for 0.5m more. I might be way off the mark though it just my initial reaction.

The cheaper defenders are what they are. You've prioritised a nice, balanced midfield with two of the most explosive strikers in the league. I like the team I'd just maybe question your defence as you're relying on a 33 year old to be playing week in week out.

            1. MTPockets

                Azemi - https://www.eurosport.no/fotball/eliteserien/2020/stabaek-kikker-etter-spiss-til-har-forhort-seg-om-azemi_sto7771043/story.shtml
Suggests he's not first choice but yeah still think there could be lots of rotation at all clubs given the fixture congestion, inc with Kinoshita.

I do have Vilsvik on the bench who can rotate in and the 4.0 Daland is expected to start for start. I like Solheim because of his attacking threat, but yes the age is certainly something worth considering. Thanks for the detailed analysis

Good morning gents, just wanted to chime in and say it's always a pleasure seeing these articles crop up at just the right time.
I've been umming and aahing for the last couple of weeks with my squad so it's been good to see what the usual crowd are going with.
I was liking the look of Odd's squad until I saw a few people saying they'll be struggling this season and especially with Rashani out that is a huge blow.
Not much love for Islamovic on here - why is that? I like the look of Rosenborg's squad this season and I think they'll be looking to make amends for an atrocious season last year.
Here's what I've got so far - as usual, any comments/advice would be helpful:

            Klaesson, Mhyra
Bojang, Desler, Eggen Hedenstad (Sivertsen, Jansen)
Sandberg, Zachariassen (V), Bohinen, Ibrahimaj (Saletros)
            James (K), Islamovic, Strand-Larsen

As is obvious from my setup I've sacrificed a midfielder like Castro/Pellegrino/Ulland Anderson/Shala so I can get the main man at Rosenborg in. I am aware having Bohinen as my 4th midfielder isn't the most foolproof plan but he did score 4 and setup 5 goals last season and is reasonably priced at 6m.

Any glaring errors that standout to anyone?

The only real moves I'm thinking of are these:

              Islamovic to Kallman
              Bohinen to Pellegrino
              Ibrahimaj to Castro
              with 0.5m itb.

I think over the course of a whole season the points spread between those players could easily be similar it just feels a bit iffy choosing Kallman over Islamovic in my head.
I'd definitely like Pellegrino in my team I just don't have the funds without shipping Islamovic. My plan is to get Dahl Reitan in my squad when he returns from injury so at least I'd be saving 0.5m from Hedenstad. I know Trondsen is likely to start at LB for Rosenborg but I'm right to assume Hedenstad is sure starter?

My front 3 is currently James-Kallmann-Strand Larsen.

Toying with the idea of squeezing Borven in for GW1 instead of Strand Larsen (means gambling with 4.0-4.5 Defs).

Then see how teams' rotation plays out between weekend-midweek fixtures, and then switching Borven back to Strand Larsen in GW2 or more probably GW3 in a double FT move, and spreading the cash where it's needed.

Agree about Rosenberg, but feel you can wait and see for early fixtures before jumping in other than Zachariasen.

Yeah my front 3 are the same.

I did have Borven in while James was flagged but not anymore.

As most people are saying to wait and see about Rosenborg I'm thinking it's the safe play.

Right now I've just got Hedenstad and Zach.

I've temporarily switched out Ibrahimaj for Maigaard.

Leaves me 3.5 itb. I'm just preparing myself for Bohinen to potentially leave soon but hopefully we have him for a few games. Last thing we need is him to be distracted because of it.

I'm happy to go with SLarssen from the start - seems like a player who wants to be playing.

Just feels a bit risky having a 20 and 21 year old up front but it's a gamble I like the sound of.

Like it. Not a fan of rotating keepers but that's a personal thing.
Islamovic - just can't afford another premium and want to see how RBK look before investing beyond a mid. Early fixtures aren't amazing and Borven could complicate it.
Bohinen - https://www.vg.no/sport/fotball/i/GGpBkq/kilder-til-vg-fransk-toppklubb-med-bud-paa-bohinen - but no announcement yet so you may prove correct in worring about that later.

                  Cheers for the replies.

I can see where you're coming from re: Islamovic/RBK.

For now I've shifted him for Kallman and left rest of squad the same. Ideally we will get line-ups for Stabaek, Rosenborg and Viking before deadline so I'll get a good idea as to who is preferred.

It's a good point about Bohinen being a point of interest for other clubs.

My original plan was to get Brynhildsen as he was quality last season but that Molde midfield is absolutely stacked.

I'm starting to think midfield is where the points are at this season. Personally the RBK triple up feels like a lot to start with, KBK are traditionally decent defensively and then they have Molde next gw. However if you are set on it if 100% want Helland over Islamovic. So I'd go Islamovic + ibrahimaj/bohinen to a kinoshita + Helland. Maybe downgrade myhra to 4.0 if that lets you stretch to Kallman. Not a fan of rotating GKs.

Yeah that's a fair enough way of looking at it.

I'm put off bringing Helland in as he's more expensive and could get injured in the first ten minutes of the season ha.

I'm drawn to Islamovic as he's not crazy expensive and think he'll be the focal point up front.

Molde are ravaged at the back and KBK are without McDermott so I think there's goals in both those games.

Maybe just sticking with Zach and Hedenstad is enough to be honest.

I'm contemplating bringing in Pellegrino or Finne - someone like that. Right now as I've downgraded Islamovic to Kallman I gave 5m itb so I have room to change it up.

As for rotating keepers I was either going with a premium like Rossbach or Sandberg and a 4m or two cheaper ones. I'm happy to spend 9.5m on two keepers that start tbh even if I only use one as I know for an extra 0.5m I SHOULD have a back up if needed. I get why people don't but I need that reassurance to be there.

I'm gonna have to go away and think about it for a bit I reckon.

                  Cheers for the input!

Fantasy Eliteserien starts today! Here are 5 reasons why you should make a team before the deadline.

              1. Games will be televised all across Europe on Eurosport.
              2. It was the first official 'remake' of FPL when it launched in 2017. The chips are a bit different but the site experience is just like FPL.
              3. Discover potential gems before everyone else. Less than two years ago we saw a certain Erling Haaland score 4 goals in the opening 20 minutes against the best defence in the league. We knew he was destined to stardom before the world even knew who he was.
              4. It's addictive. You don't have to be an expert to play. We have a great community on here with in-depth discussions and tactic talks.
              5. The season runs until December and we will have a lot of GWs during the PL summer break. This game is an excellent addition to FPL.

Deadline is 16:00 UK time. English version of the game: https://en.fantasy.eliteserien.no/

Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Is there a favoured website for quick release of team news 75 minutes before kick off? I've used flashscore.com, but it's a bit clunky game by game with lots of clicks.

Yeah, unfortunately as Team Cruel says right now we can't offer any compensation for writing.

Potentially down the road as Eliteserien expands it could be something that's looked at but for now, with quite a few good commenters on site despite not a huge audience it just isn't something we can look at right now.

I'm genuinely going to be watching as much Norwegian football as possible this season.

If I'm somehow able to amass some kind of makeshift knowledge of the teams/players/managers I'd certainly be interested in giving it a bash.

It's a smaller, niche part of the website and the more usable, relevant content, the better.
