Scoutcast Episode 342 – End of season review

The Scoutcast trio of Joe, Andy and Az are back for one more time this season to assess the highs, the lows and lessons they should probably learn.

This episode is dominated by the community’s questions on a raft of topics from deadlines to reclassifications.

With a chaotic final Gameweek deadline for many, the Scoutcasters start off with tackling the difficulties around timing a deadline right in a global game, where not everyone is awake to make last minute moves. It is an issue which is further complicated in the 24-hour worldwide social media news culture that has emerged in recent years.

The proliferation of Fantasy Premier League manager numbers is also pondered. Is a high finish trickier than ever with so many engaged players enjoying the game?

Lessons learned features prominently. What pivotal moments in the season made them think differently about how they play the game? For Joe the importance of Double Gameweeks being married up with chips is a particular issue that will influence him next season.

Players to target next season also takes up a large part of this mammoth hour and a half episode. This discussion takes in reclassification of players like Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, those that are certain of a price hike as well as the potential low priced gems to target.

The five-substitute rule and the potential for an early Blank Gameweek, and possibly a Double too, are other additions to their chat.

They also assess how their traditionally goal strewn Gameweek 38 went and finish the show with some powerful words from Shirtless about family and FPL.

The Scoutcast will return along with a host of other video and podcast content for the next campaign. In 2020/21 Joe will be joined by Az as a regular co-host, with a different guest each week to help them make sense of each Gameweek’s inevitable twists and turns.

I think a key part of next season for me will be trying to shut out the noise and captain who I want. This season I saw Salah in *decline* and Sterling early season was in woeful form but as they were the popular options most weeks i stuck with them, I mentioned yesterday in the first 15 gws the two of them hauled only 4 times out of 30 matches. Yet I captained them for the majority of the blanks and even didn't nail the 4 hauls 100% either

My rivals who are more casual just looked at who scored well last week (ings, kdb, pukki) and just captained them

Be interested to know who your randoms were.

Did marginally better on a slightly different tack. One random (Pukki) and a whole heap of Vardy (not a random I assume) and a sprinkling of KdB - also Kane ended up my most effective captain - weeks 1 and 38 only - only held him 3 weeks overall!

I think most of my captaincy success was down to not looking at the captain polls (because it creates fear of EO and such) and just sticking with the player I believed was most likely to get some attacking returns in the GW. I usually just stuck with premium and inform players, playing forward up the pitch. Most capped Salah(10), Sterling(7), Mane(6) & Aguero(4)

Whilst luck is definitely a factor with captaincy, my captains never scored more than 16 (base points) in a SGW, unlike LR, where he has had monster hauls and hattricks. So it's not just about catching those monster hauls but also choosing players who will provide you steady returns.

Interesting on sterling and food for thought I captained him way to much earlier in the season, even when others stopped, choosing him as a ‘differential’. Clearly I need to look at the stats more perhaps when choosing a captain and not just pick someone who has hauled many times before so should be able to spring a big score again.

I am interested to know how many times did you pick a city player and they didn’t start and you got lucky with a haul off the bench etc?
KDB was the one who would most often start so I found myself using him more successfully earlier the season. I took him out my team final week as I had presumed he would keep playBig deeper. I had assessed correctly that pep would play his CL lineup and keep someone like Cancelo at left back not mendy (unlike az! - not sure if he went through with that) but had not considered KDB being pushed further forward and the huge impact that would have on my score.

I’m wondering where Bruno fits into the SiB and BC picture. (Need to wait for funds to become a member again!)

Most - not all - of his major hauls were pen fuelled. Pens are so unpredictable and don’t necessarily fall in good fixtures and I assume they account for a really high proportion of his favourable stats.

I happily captained Vardy a lot on the grounds (again no stats to hand) that he defied stats just by being so clinical - never went Auba but would happily also captain him on the same grounds. Does Bruno - effective from long range and pen king - fit in the same category? You look through underlying stats to consistency of big returns?

I never captained Bruno and wasn’t that tempted - but did go Martial in favourable fixtures . Wrong think?

Out of interest - I've captured my captaincy "highlights" (lol) from this season - some of these were questionable picks in hindsight - but overall it seems a very unlcuky set of numbers to get from those players from those gameweeks

Really tilting me towards perma capping KDB or Bruno next season, just to get rid of the hassle of it

I had a similar problem this season, would have been much better off sticking to one of Salah, KDB or even TAA.
If KDB had been my captain every week I would have finished comfortably in the top 10k.
However in every other season (that I analysed at the time) my captaincy points from jumping to premium players with good fixtures worked out higher then perma-captaining one player.
I think this season has just been a statistical anomaly in which premium players with prime fixtures have not performed as expected.

I capped Salah majority of the time and got me 382 points. 24 games. Total cap points 540.

Autocap you need a player that can haul every week and that does not happen in FPL unfortunately.

There’s a bit of pattern there no with Vardy? 🙂

                I had these raw scores

                21 Mo 10
                22 Vardy 5
                23 Mo 7
                25 Mo 16
                27 Mane 8
                28 Mane 2

Were you on your triple defence at the time? Blocked sone good C options and Mo and Liverpool generally were still fairly hot around then

Yeah triple pool D was from GW21 - GW27 - it got an insane amount of base points and i went into that run at 430k GW21 & came out of it 6 weeks later at 96k so overall I wasn't disappointed

The Vardy missed pen was the one that really grated - was the full 18 point swing instead of getting 7*2 for goal + baps he got -2*2

But captaincy generally has been such a pain in the arse this season, for me anyways

                    Just had a peek

TAA got 57 base points from 21-27! Two hauls in there and no blanks.

Not devastating but allied to triple defence defo a weapon. Just 10 points behind Bruno for instance in the last 8 of the season

Yeah he’s a ridiculous FPL asset - I wonder will he eventually go further forward positionally too in the coming years

He’s obviously not a Gareth Bale on the ball, but he is as good going forward as Beckham ever was for example, and as good at set pieces (and that’s saying something)

The big one for me is looking for patterns here.

Does the pattern of consistent cs runs hold up with Liverpool? I can see a potential WC situation or mini WC to move onto triple defence with TAA captain if the run looks good.

Leaving aside position there's really no reason why the 4th best points scorers in the game shouldn't be a consistent C option if he's playing in a position and for a team where consistent runs are likely. All you're losing is the chance of the 30 pointer. It would be a temporary play while the run lasted and not that difficult to hop off.

Logical enough I think. You have another 30 game weeks or so to go midfield and attack. 3 cs is nice but 4 is simply better. He was well within range of Mo and Mane hauls and you don't have the bore of deciding which one to go for. I know your stat about Mo and Mane but the big one for me is just one simultaneous haul in 76 matches - that makes holding both inefficient

I think he's pretty much locked in for:

                          15 Cleansheets (Upside to 20)
                          10 Assists (Upside to 15+)
                          5 goals (Upside to 7-8)

That's probably a worst case of 30 returns a season, with upside to 40+

Captaincy material in anyone's book - especially if you could reliably find the games where he blanks & dodge those

Did you ever C TAA on your triple defence run? You’d have done very tidily had you just left C on TAA for those Vardy fixtures

I only went there once but if you’re looking for consistent C returns with the occasional haul TAA is a perfectly logical captain when you consider that Liverpool defence seems almost predictable - when they get on a run they stay on it. Pattern this season and last iirc and most effective way of maximising the triple defence

Lessens the chance of a 20 pointer plus of course but not by that much. What you’re really missing out on is the 30 pointer

one thing I need to improve next season is my captain choices. 487 points whereas I'd have increased my total points just chucking it on de Bruyne or Salah all season. Snuck into the Top 10K for the first time since 2011/12 but it wasn't enough to win my work mini-league.

A lot of FPL purists I think would like captaincy done away with. Second best for me would be to only give 1.5x the total points if a VC comes into play...and I would actually do the same for the 2nd and 3rd bench players. This way still rewards the VC/bench, but not as much.

IMO picking a starting XI is a big part of the game and if the deadlines are changed it will be most welcome to stop what is effectively a big head start for those in the know.

              Thank you !

              I was thinking about something.
Man United & City can't have home fixtures in one GW due to logistics issues right ??

I being able to get wayward quickly with thoughts can fall for wrong © options easily.

So how about Bruno & KDB in team & perma © home guy ??

              Both heartthrobs of respective teams.

That with double pool defense. Hmmm

If i have learned anything this season, © isn't a thing to fu.. about. Punts are for 6th/7th attacker's not ©.

I read this initially as Mason Mount was legally challenging Sheffield United's goal against Villa - was thinking "why is he getting involved??"

Never a goal (and Norwood point anyway). 🙂
It must me space between the line (or post) and the ball for counting as a goal right?
The ball was in connection with the post all the time so no space between them, is it still a goal?
(I expect the diameter of the post and the line with are the same)

                What are you on about?
It's been confirmed by just about everyone, includ Hawk-Eye themselves, that it was a mistake and that it should have been a goal?

Yes, I know it’s confirmed by everyone, but still it’s an interresting question if there is a goal even though it’s no space between the ball and the line (or the post).. Agree, feeling sorry for them specially their goals in Spurs and Soton games ruled out by VAR at the end of the season. Hopefully they come back soon. 🙂

You've got to feel for Bournemouth!
When that happened, everyone on here was saying "oh my, hopefully that won't make a huge difference in the end". And then it did.

There's no way of knowing, but when they end up losing out on another season of Premier League by just 1 point, you can't blame them for looking at a situation like that and wonder what could have been.
It was a glaring mistake by a system the ref's just blindly trusted to be right

If they wanted to challenge it they should have done it right after the game... Can't wait until the end of the season and then do it looking for a way to weasel their way out of a deserved relegation. No chance they succeed.

Does anyone else get a bit sad remembering when you were a casual and captain picks were more fun? I was genuinely a punt master before I cared about ranks, managed to captain fellaini for a brace, Ben arfa after he hadn't hauled for weeks, welbeck after he had a series of blanks. Used to love getting messages from my friends saying "how did you know?!"

Not really. I think winning is more fun personally. For all the random picks where you get it right there are plenty of Richarlison (c)s vs Fulham...

Although next season I'm going to be a bit more adventurous with my (c). I got more points with my VC than my C this year which is pretty bad.

I see fantasy tools https://www.premierfantasytools.com/fpl-team-analyzer/ is quite a nice tool. It brings some clarity to the Cxck ups we make during a season. Like many on this site, we can deviate from our original plan because of the noise we take in off social media.

My ranking (33k not great) could have been markedly different if I captained who I wanted rather than be swayed by ownership or even keep the arm band on KDB who I recognized from the off he would be a gem this past season. I am talking about a massive swing in rank.

The 64 points I used with transfers could have been reduced to 20 if I just stuck to my guns and not made changes that I could live with for a week. A case in point is I took out KDB for Dilva last week (enough said) and on deadline I heard TAA not playing so I used -4 to get Robbo.
A I should have stuck with KDB and be taken my medicine with TAA. The net effect was 31 points lost. Totally stupid I know.

It is quite simple really, play the game the way it is supposed it is to be played. A learning curve to be taken in.

Actually did well on captaincy and hit all these just at the right time or even bit early. I'll do well to replicate this again.

I only really missed Jim (Ings a perfectly decent sub there) and Chelsea.

My transfer out policy was foul and I lost out badly taking a mad WC in 21. EO never really bothered me - think I simply got carried away in looking for the next big thing.

                          Havertz Werner and Pulisic.

Only thing that worries me is rotation but Frank will start his best team always I reckon so will have to deal with all three not playing the full 90. They will be going for the title this season.

Depends on their fixtures and to a lesser extent player pricing for me, with both Manchester clubs likely to blank in GW1 and maybe longer their players are likely to be in high demand from the off.

Yeah, will be interesting to see what happens with the fixtures with City and UTD plus Wolves finishing late.

All three could get knocked out of Europe and that will be problem solved.

They'll have a lot of bodies on the books I suppose is the point

Pulisic, Ziyech, Werner should surely be locked in though

Just have to wonder at how happy a dressing room will that be with Tammy, CHO, Giroud, Mount, RLC, Gilmour also looking places

                            In fairness, maybe its:

                            - Jorginho, Kovacic, Kante, RLC, Gilmour battling for 2 central mid slots

                            - Werner, Tammy, Giroud, Batshuyai battling for one striker slot (only one winner there surely)

                            - Pulisic, Havertz, Ziyech, Mount, Barkley going for the 3 AM/WF slots (Willian & Pedro gone)

Pulisic & Werner could be lucrative

Werner might actually really, really thrive with that sort of service behind him (Havertz, Pulisic, Ziyech wow!)

And Havertz. Good to wait until all are settled. Look at Pulisic early on. I don't know if you agree?

Yeah - very interested in Pulisic to be honest - I don't see a lot of difference between his FPL output (from play) and that of Eden Hazard - if anything its better - Haz just had penalties to buffer his scores

I started using eye test more after lockdown and it did pay off. Pulisic was special, especially if he was allowed space against the bigger teams. My only top 1k finish was all eye test and zero social media. In South Africa you can watch all the games.
Obviously the Chelsea new recruits will do well, but the timing is important.

Yep same as - I actually kept Pulisic for the Liverpool match after watching him vs. Norwich - he could have easily gotten 20 points that game - was properly gutted when he was benched as i strongly felt he was going to get joy down Liverpool's right

The fact that he came away with 9 points from 30 minutes was pretty bittersweet as he'd have filled his boots had he been allowed the 90

His Burnley performance was breathatking too - I think he has lots of double & treble returns in him if he stays fit

Batshuay surely have to be sold. Sheffield should buy him, they need to replace their dross up top.

Giroud Pulisic Willian Havertz Ziyech Tammy Werner.
Realistically, only 3 will play regularly. Taking them on early could end up in tears. Wait until the team settles IMO

You can add Mount to the forward thinkers too. Frank maybe with defenders more, wasn't exactly the same 11 man type. Then there is Europe, and the end of Champions league this season, just to throw a few more spanners in the works.

                      1) Rashford as a £9.5m midfielder

                        3) Martial

KdB at 11 doesn't feel likely for the top scorer in the game

Quite possible Bruno comes in way cheaper if Robbo last season is any guide. At this stage the talk was if he would be 8.0 and there was outrage when he came in at 7.0. Towers may well pull the same trick again and put him at 9.5.

Martial would break the game at 7.5 next season - he'll get more baps to offset the cleansheets & goals points lost

                              Yep

But with 17 goals I’d have guessed he’d have done better on baps especially with a sprinkling of assists thrown in too. Was wondering if there’s an aspect to his game where he gets negatives as Mo does no?

You'd imagine that it's the old chestnut of shots off target, combined with just being *marginally* outside baps, where 24 BPS instead of 18 would really help him

I hadn't considered the extra baps. However to offset the lost goals points and cleansheet points he would surely have to get at least 1 bonus point per game.
If Man Utd win 1-0 with Martial getting the goal, is Martial likely to be better or worse of points wise as a forward or midfielder?

LFC will have much more clean sheets with a fit Alisson from the start next season.

Those opening 8 fixtures this season was a killer for cleanies. He also missed two more games after returning from injury.

Double Pool defence always a healthy source for plenty of points.

I'm fairly certain double Liv defence will be part of next season's template. I will certainly be having TAA and Robbo/VVD.

I'm committed to tripling. My thinking is I can risk going without Salah and Mane as there are sufficient premium Mancunian midfielders.

Started this season with Mo VVD and TAA. Most likely will do the same for next season.

LFC have it all to do defending the title and we will be up for it, no doubt.

Good point, although I don't expect them to do quite as well as last season. I know I am a toffee but they got very lucky sometimes with results.
Talking Chelsea above, Liverpool, Spurs, Leicester and Arsenal will be easier to work out as they won't be missing the start of the season. This year it might be necessary to use a WC early on when all teams are back.

I went triple pool defence for a large part of their epic CS run this season - it honestly wasn't overly pleasant watching the games - massive elation at the final whistles mind you, but extreme levels of tension every time the opposition venture into Liverpool's half

Not queuing up to go there again tbh - TAA is enough

This if FPL towers keep wing backs as defenders. Losing points going to MF will kill his value. 9 mil as a defender/ 6.5 as a mid. Then I would keep a Centre back.

I've tended to go defender-heavy for the last few years - not as extreme as my plan for next season admittedly. I well know the feeling of seeing 100 points at 60 mins spiral down to mediocrity by the final whistle. It's not fun indeed, but I still think it could maximise my points as well as focus on fewer positions for transfers.

Heh. My problem is living in Cambodia, the late games - often involving Liverpool finish at 4 am. Time and again I fall asleep at half time when the sheet is clean, only to wake up in injury time and not be sure if I'm in a nightmare or not.

The restart and rotation as well as on the beach had, empty stadiums had an effect on most teams.

Whether Klopp is going to bench the likes of TAA when the Title defence begins is yet to be seen. VVD is an animal and nailed AF.

Salah also had his injury niggles this season. If he gets off to a flyer then I cannot see much stopping him. I want him to be extra greedy next season 🙂

107 goals/assists as an FPL asset. Salah is an absolute monster!

Pep made a massive amount of changes this season. I cannot see him changing that next season.

He will sign new players as well so really sceptic about City assets. Reckon Jesus will be the one to have with Aguero one season left on his contract. Aguero also alwas gets injured so why I am thinking Jesus will start most games with Aguero rotating.

Jesus also racked up the minutes and starts through Lockdown so Pep getting him ready for next season IMO.

KDB will always get points if fit. Just class personified. How he conserves energy by great positioning is sometimes missed too.

Ings, Jimmy, Greenwood, Martial, Vardy (look at his GW29-36 - with no Maddison, Pereira, Chilwell)

Kun, Auba, Kane in the premium tiers - Jesus might get more minutes

Then throw Werner in there as well with Pulisic, Ziyech, Havertz tee-ing him up...

Picking 3 forwards is going to be a pain next season isn't it?

Should be fascinating - already looking like going light on defence might be the way to go though...

So naturally we'll start with record numbers of cleansheets for the first 5-6 weeks, early wildcard into defence-heavy builds, just in time for the attackers to start hitting their strides 🙂

Yeah I don't know what to make of him... his numbers tis season are fantastic

But he posted 4 mediocre/average/reasonable season prior to that so is no stranger to a goal drought either!

On paper, with his recent season, and those three assist-merchants behind him, he should do very well though

It's just a case of how fast will he (and the other newbies behind him) traverse the learning curve - it might be GW5, 10, 15 maybe even January 2021 before he hits his stride?

But you'd expect him to hit it at some stage for sure (on paper!)

yeah, I can't see him being a flop - a lot of people on here (and elsewhere) said Giroud and Tammy were terrible and they both scored a few. Getting sucked into the shiny new thing sometimes isn't a great idea though, mainly because you feel a bit stupid when someone obvious like Jimmy outscores him

ALSO, I gotta think about bonus stuff more this season - Werner going to be starved of them playing with that lot? Salah has this problem with TAA et al. Also why someone like Pope is so epic, most of his teammates are garbage bonus wise

Tammy was mental though - he scored 7 goals from 2.0 XG (Literally!) in 3 GW's from GW3-5 and then did pretty much.... nothing... for the rest of the season - one of the biggest FPL frauds out there imo

Giroud on the other hand is an absolute rolls-royce of an FPL asset on points per minute - always has been - when he gets minutes, he delivers - period

I'd say Werner must be of at least comparable ability to Giroud, if not a little better even (I just don't rate Tammy) so he should be able to deliver at something like Grioud has done? (e.g. 8 goals & 1 assist in his last 9 starts for Chelski)

yeah, plenty of other players like Tammy and it's incredibly hard to time them - even Bats had an epic run for Palace - my best striker by average was Pukki!

Yeah Giroud is the man, gutted when he left - I think there is a good chance Werner scores plenty, also depends on the Jorginho situation, Werner on pens potentially too..

Saka and Greenwood, I expect them to be budget friendly.

If Greenwood to a mid he will be worth 11 if he starts.

                          I'm expecting Greenwood to be 7.5m - not budget-friendly, more mid-price.
Saka maybe 6m could be value.

Do we roughly know when FPL resets for the new season?

First the promotions must be in place. Second, 2 weeks marketing with FPL. IMO it will open 3 weeks to a month before the season starts
