How to play Football Index and a guide to the match day and media dividends

Sponsored by Football Index

Fantasy Football Scout are joining forces with Football Index in the upcoming season.

If you’re new to Football Index, think of it as a revolutionary betting platform that works a bit like a virtual stock market.

Similar to player prices in Fantasy Premier League, the aim is to bet on the future value of the players when the price is low and then sell on when the value is high.

Now imagine you could do that sort of thing and have the opportunity to profit from FPL skills.

Well you can. It’s what happens at Football Index (FI) and Fantasy Football Scout will be dipping its toe into FI’s waters for the season.

Or, more accurately, I will. With a very modest £20 budget to work with, I’ll attempt to play the market, turn a profit and, most importantly of all, have some fun while I’m doing it.

Along the way, Scout will provide some tips on who to buy and sell while I no doubt ignore all that expertise and go for an ill-advised punt that lasts about as long as Martin Kelly’s England career.

GET STARTED WITH FOOTBALL INDEX HERE

So how do you play the game?

Put simply, you place your bet and buy shares in individual players and make/lose money based on the changing value of those shares.

Values change due to a number of factors, but like ‘real’ stock exchange shares, the key reason is popularity. The more people buy into a player, the greater his price, and vice versa. The trick, as ever, is to buy before values go up, and sell before they go down.

There are, however, many other ways to win on FI – dividends.

Many of these dividends give FI more of a Fantasy Football feel because they are based on the players’ on-pitch performance.

FI has just overhauled its dividend pay-outs and it’s not controversial to say that they are extremely generous, with a number of 100% increases in certain areas.

Dividends are awarded to owners of players who excel for their side, with bigger pay-outs for stand-out performances on major match days (10+ fixtures across Europe’s top five leagues/the Champions/Europa League and the European Championships). There are also awards for players who make it into FI’s team of the month.

All those dividends rely on the sort of match day data that drives any decent fantasy game these days, as well as the bonus point system in FPL. So a goal will earn a player 45 points as part of their dividend ranking, a red card -30 and so on. Defenders earn clean sheet points, while keepers also enjoy a raft of exclusive ways to make their mark.

One other dividend is different. And daily.

The media dividend is paid out to the player with the most mentions across a range of major media sources every single day.

Seen through the prism of the last few days, it demonstrates how Football Index works on a fundamental level.

Take the example of Lionel Messi. Talk of the pint-sized legend leaving Barca once and for all and this news has dominated the media recently, resulting in a massive jump in his price.

These things change, obviously, but the last time I checked it would cost you seven quid for a single Messi share – two pounds more than before he hit the fax machine, which is a huge rise in relation to his overall value.

And for those of you who can only think in these terms when talking about Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo is currently at just over three pounds.

Compare that to Harry Maguire. Despite being all over the media, FI‘s dividend doesn’t take bad publicity into account. It’s not a measure of infamy.

But the fallout of his recent press coverage – the Paddington Hard Stare from Southgate, being dropped from the England squad etc – has clearly spooked some owners into selling their shares in him.

The bottom line – not all news is good news with FI‘s media dividend, but it’s a daily way for a chance to win.

There’s even a set of in-play dividends to win from, with FI paying out on individual actions (goals, assists, clean sheets etc) by players for the first 30 days that you own them.

Like all the best games, the rules are fairly straightforward, but the nuances start to pile up as you become more familiar with how things can play out.

I, no doubt, will pick up on some of these nuances, and get burned by others, as I wend my merry way through a season of Football Index trading.

I hope you’ll join me for the ride.

And in the meantime, all the rules and regs can be found on FI’s excellent Academy Page here.

I'm reasonably settled on the players but not feeling very thrilled about the full squad...

    McCarthy, Steer
    TAA, Davies, Shaw, Justin, KWP
    Salah, Auba, Fernandes, Saka, Soucek
    Werner, Adams, Davis

    Keepers:
    Standard.

    Defence:
    TAA is a no-brainer.
TOT + Mourinho + nailedness + good fixtures at 5.0 = great, hence the Davies pick.
MUN had an excellent defence in the second half of last season. Reasonable fixtures - 5.0 for a top four defence is very nice, so Shaw is in!
Justin is in as Leicester are a solid top half team with decent fixtures. Good value at 4.5.
KWP is the pick I'm least convinced by, particularly because I already own McCarthy. Since I've only got two forwards, I'd rather not dip into the 4.0 bargain bucket so I can have a reasonable bench, and he can help with rotation. Open to suggestions!

    Midfield:
Salah is not going anywhere. Best player in FPL.
Auba in for two weeks before switching to a City player, as template. If he massively outperforms Salah, that can change.
Fernandes is in from the start for GW2 captaincy. Don't want to waste my first FT on bringing him in. Would much rather use my first transfer hopping on the best 5.5 mid early on because picking who that will be right now is very difficult!
Saka represents the 5.5 mid slot. He's a bit of a risk, but this price point is likely to be one of my first transfers, so happy to take more of a risk here, particularly with the great first two fixtures.
Soucek is in to make sure my bench is stronger than bargain basement, and to play in GW1 while Fernandes waits for his time to shine. Don't think (e.g.) Son's expected points are +4 more than Soucek's for GW1.

    Forwards:
Werner is a no brainer, and very scary not to own!
Adams looks like excellent value at 6.0 if he can continue his post-lockdown form.

    Win 🙂

V similar to my team, I have Mitro, ASM, Coady. Like it a lot.

Yeah fair enough. Can see merits to both. Have been very tempted by a Wolves defender. The lack of Vinagre has really thrown a spanner into the works for me fitting one in though! ASM makes sense as more nailed, as does Mitro.

Only other thought, are you happy with double SOU defense? If not, could put Ryan in.

              1. I think so. Haven't seen anything to suggest otherwise.
              2. I'm not too happy with double SOU, but I think McCarthy is noticeably better than Ryan as a pick. I have been toying with the idea of a Johnstone + Button double up in the hope that Johnstone can rack up mountains of saves if not clean sheets, but I'm not sure... Lamptey is another option but I don't trust Potter and I'd rather have a nailed player.

Week 1 I should have 11. The players are almost all nailed (perhaps only Saka isn't - could swap him for someone...) After GW1 I will have two strong bench options every week.

For sure, it’s him or Dan James, I’d take a one legged Greenwood.

*cant see a Sancho deal being completed by then.

I was sure he was going to play until the shenanigans in Iceland.

First draft, would love to hear some thoughts as I feel quite uncertain about this.

    McCarthy - Nyland
    Robertson - TAA - Doherty - Digne - Ayling
    Salah - Auba - Saka - Bissouma - Saint-Maximin
    Wilson - McGoldrick - Martial

    Comments:
KEEPER: I don't like McCarthy, but Pope is probably coming in sooner rather than later. Another option is to get a Leeds keeper when one is nailed.
DEF: I usually start with my season with a terrible defence. Figured I'd try something else this time. Ayling should be benched a lot.
MID: Can't push myself to go without Salah, Auba will be replaced by KDB soon. Saka is a risk I'm willing to take. Bissouma and Saint-Maximin are a compromise to get a strong defence.
FOR: Had no idea what to do with this really. Figured Martial and Wilson are ok picks and McGoldrick fit the price range...

This I'm somewhat aware of but I think I first want to see who's playing and how well.

wondering whether it's better to start with Robbo & ASM or TAA & Soucek /Noble/Norwood/Ceballos?

    Johnstone (Button)
    KWP, Robbo, Egan (Mitchell, Struijk)
    Mane, Aubameyang, Alli, ASM (Bissouma)
    Werner, Ings, DCL

This may have gone under the radar but I've just been tipped off by a mate of mine (Chelsea fan ) that Ethan Ampedu has been signed on loan by Sheff Utd he is a real talent who can play at C/B or CDM & a real potential bonus magnet priced as a defender @ £4.5m if he can nail down a starting position in the back 3 he could turn out to be one of the bargains of the season at that price . Definitely one to watch .

Must admit I missed it but he's a former Exeter City player (my part of the country) he's young only 19 & was getting good reviews even then made his debut at 15 !

I would be shocked if Chelsea loaned him to Sheff without expecting first team football, definitely on my radar

I would imagine the plan would be a season loan & then back to Chelsea to replaceThiago Silva who I believe is on a one year contract

4 goals and 6 assists from 3300 minutes is not a good return at all. Was getting doubled up on every other game last year but if you think it will be different this year then welcome to try.
