The House’s Money: Why maintaining a good start to the FPL season is so difficult

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times …it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

  • Charles Dickens, ‘A Tale of Two Cities’.

Dickens may not have been speaking specifically about the opening Gameweeks of an FPL season (we’ll never know for sure) but his words are, nonetheless, fairly appropriate. While it has, indeed, been a tale of two Gameweeks thus far, there will be some who have done far, far better than others.

I love the start of a new FPL campaign as much as the next Fantasy manager but, I have to admit, it’s also among the most challenging parts to navigate successfully. Not only are we operating with very little information, but many of us also have to deal with the fact that some mini-league rivals have, somehow, already opened up what might appear to be unassailable leads.

Of course, this is the part of the season where we regularly preach patience and encourage people to avoid panic-driven decisions that they might later regret. Phrases like ‘it’s a marathon, not a sprint’ are commonplace on FPL forums and we might also comfort ourselves with our vague childhood memories of a story about a race between a tortoise and a hare.

This article, however, will focus on why those people who have shot to the front probably won’t stay there, and why those chasing shouldn’t panic, yet.

The House Money Effect

Gamblers and investors, in particular, may be familiar with the ‘House Money Effect’, a cognitive bias first popularised by Nobel Prize-winning economist Richard Thaler.

Essentially, the House Money Effect draws off the principles of ‘mental accounting’; the idea that we categorise money and expenditures into different accounts in our mind, and we evaluate outcomes in relation to these.

So, for example, we might have mental accounts such as ‘beer money’, ‘college funds’ or ‘holiday money.’

The House Money Effect often occurs when we receive money in an atypical manner. For example; winning a bet, receiving a bonus or profiting from an investment.

Behavioural psychologists have observed that people take far greater risks with such sums than they would with their savings or regular earnings. They also find that people also tend to be more generous with such windfalls than they might otherwise be.

The proposed reason for this phenomenon is that, psychologically, people don’t perceive these sums to really be their money, it goes into a completely different mental account to money earned in the normal way. It’s the casinos or ‘the house’s money’ and, thus, we tend to treat it that way. At best, we make more money from the risks we take with it. And at worst, we end up with our original stake, no better or worse off than we were before and, because we think we’ll be okay with either outcome, we’re inclined to treat it as fun money.

I would argue that, due to their windfall of FPL points, Fantasy managers who do very well in the opening few Gameweeks are substantially more at risk of succumbing to the House Money Effect than normal.

This might translate into them spending some of those points via hits, making riskier transfers, making transfers when it might have been objectively more sensible to save them or simply being less rigorous in their selections, captaincy or transfer decisions.

Now, this isn’t to say that high-flying managers simply got there by luck, much in same as an investor doesn’t profit entirely by luck, it’s simply stating that, due to this cognitive bias, the extra points they have scored may seem like ‘house money’ to them, and they’re likely to be more inclined to risk them as a result.

Essentially; if they blow their lead, they’re no worse off than their competitors and this, mentally, becomes their baseline.

How Spurs and Everton's new signings fared in their FPL Gameweek 1 debuts 1

There is some evidence that may support this having already occurred too. Between Gameweeks 1 and 2, the average number of points spent on transfers via hits by FPL managers was 2.28 points overall but, among the Top 10k, this rose almost 20% to 2.72.

Rationally-speaking, the Top 10k should have had less cause to make any transfers, let alone take hits, based on Gameweek 1 but, instead, they made more transfers and spent more points on them.

The Top 10k also scored fewer gross points on average than the overall (53.27 vs 59.55). Naturally, in a single gameweek, this could simply be luck, but it could also be a result of less rigorous decision-making caused by the House Money Effect.

So, for those chasing, the key lessons from this are to not panic, to not make the same mistakes that the people above you probably will, and to take advantage of these mistakes to close the gap. That means avoiding hits, risky captaincies and panic moves like Wildcarding unnecessarily.

It is worth bearing in mind that many of those who held firm with their Gameweek 1 squad profited as a result in Gameweek 2. As Guns ‘n’ Roses singer Axl Rose once said, “All we need is a little patience” though, again, it’s unclear whether he was talking about FPL specifically.

Naturally, there is also a fairly obvious lesson in all of this for those FPL managers who are doing really well after two Gameweeks, which I suppose I could spell out, but, honestly, who really wants to help those people anyway?

My Gameweek 3 Team

Former Fantasy Premier League world champion and four-time finisher in the top 7k Simon March gives us the lowdown on his thinking for the new campaign.

    Any feedback or suggestions on this WC team much appreciated;

    Martinez (Steer)
    TAA, Saiss, James, Mitchell, Cooper
    Salah, KDB, Son, Podence, Foden,
    Werner, DCL, Brewster

Have come up with loads of teams but keep coming back to the need for Son and Werner. Massive downside is Brewster and I'm 0.1 short of Cooper to Lamptey which would have been nicer.

    Any advice appreciated.

Don’t fancy Podence and Foden in the same team, especially with Brewster. You could have a stinker if Podence loses minutes at the same time Foden gets rotated.

Why are people looking at Salah's fixtures? Have you seen what they're handing out penalties for this season? Fixtures will be meaningless for the likes of Salah, KdB and probably Bruno (if he's not handing them to Rashford).

    1. Cok3y5murf
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

By this season, you mean two gameweeks. We don't really know if it's going to continue this way yet. But even if it does, that would be an awfully boring way to play the game. What do you suggest, that everyone keeps Salah, KDB, and Bruno all season expecting a penalty every game regardless of fixtures? No one benefits then anyway.

      1. Twisted Saltergater

There's been a couple of great posts on the impact of FIFA's control of VAR on their domestic leagues. I think it was discussed on FPL Blackbox the other night too.

And yes, that is what I suggest. I don't make the rules, but you don't ignore a factor of the game that is OP if you want to do well in it.

        1. Cok3y5murf

          I watched it.

Salah blanked last week. As did Bruno. Mane hauled. Son hauled. Both not on penalties.

Salah has scored 3 penalties in each of the last 2 seasons. They have helped him equal his goal tally with Mane in both seasons because Mane scored more from open play. Does he get more penalties this year? Perhaps. What would be your estimated number? There is still room to climb without sticking to only penalty takers, but there is certainly almost no room to climb if everyone picks them.

DCL another one that hauled without penalties.

I think you're drawing the wrong conclusion. Players will still haul - Son, DCL - but penalty taking players will have bad performances supported by penalties awarded to them. Captaincy candidates with penalties will hardly ever fail, is my fear.

Like you say, it's only been 2 gameweeks. Let's count the number of penalties in a few more weeks.

FPL have messed up with Salah and KdB's price, imo. It's crazy that Mane is the same price. All penalty takers should be 0.5 - 1m more expensive.

            1. Cok3y5murf
              • 7 Years
              3 years, 6 months ago

Not going to get into that again, but Salah's penalties have only got him 1 goal more than Mane in the last 2 seasons COMBINED, and even that was because he played more minutes in both seasons. The penalties have helped him score the same number of goals, not more goals, hence it's not an advantage. I wonder if anyone calling it an advantage even had a look at their goal tallies.

The pricing was not based on a potential increase in penalties this season due to a change in rules which couldn't have been foreseen.

Why are you referring to last season? The rules for awarding penalties this season have been changed. There has been a rule change.

Because pricing was based on last season. Are you honestly saying you foresaw this increase in penalties from the first 2 gameweeks before they happened? So how can you expect FPL to foresee it?

July 2020 - Shareholders unanimously approved the implementation of VAR, in line with the full FIFA VAR protocol.

                    https://www.premierleague.com/news/1749286

Remind me when the FPL player prices came out?

Interestingly, none of the 5 key areas mentioned include handballs which is what most of the stupid penalties came from.

Either way, the only one who knows if you foresaw this or not is you 🙂 If you had posted when FPL prices came out that there would be an increase in penalties this season and they needed to price players accordingly, there would've been some substance to this. Anyone can say it now. I certainly didn't see anyone foresee this here or in any pods, etc. So can't blame FPL personally.

the price of the penalty takers by FPL isn't even my main point, and I definitely didn't know about the increase in penalties as a consequence of this change! I'm not trying to appear clever 🙂

I'm just trying to point out that playing FPL without Salah and KdB this year will be a more difficult ask than in previous years. Genuinely, that's all. I wish FPL had priced them higher but they were probably unaware of the FIFA VAR protocol impact also.

Even with the cameos, he could still be good value at 6.5. He's fairly explosive, so if he performs in those 3 out of 5 games, he's still outscoring similarly priced players.

    KDB, Son, Foden, Podence, Anguissa
    Werner, Jimenez, DCL

I spent most of the week with no Liverpool defenders but after running a some points projections there really is no beating the double up for expected points.

Can you really say its a headache when people are panicking about Son, KDB and Foden not playing this weekend?
Line them up in order of expected points and don't worry about benching the odd point or two.

Genuinely thought you’d spent £200m then realised no Salah...amazing what you can do when you drop a Liverpool attacker for defender!

I couldn’t do it, have the fear!

200m with that midfield? Personally think that team looks lackluster especially considering Salah isnt in there.

KDB is my captain with the occasional Son captaincy when KDB is away with a bad fixture. Salah would have to average about 10 points a game to be good value without captaincy.
I'm getting him week 12 if the plan doesn't change too much

Do you think Son + Robertson outscore Salah + Mitchell (with Mitchell benched so you can play TAA, Saiss and James as your back 3).

Good point - I went the Salah route.

Other coin toss is Werner or Son which I’m struggling with.

Yes I do which is why I've gone for this set up. I think Son will average around 6 points per game and Salah about 7.5 over the season.
With Son's excellent fixtures, a 4 way rotation of James, Saiss, Podence and DCL where I bench the one with the lowest projected points and the fact that I have great cover for when Foden etc miss a game I prefer this set up.

This team is much stronger than the ones you built before. I like it. You're betting against Salah but have double Pool defense. If you think they really will do as well as in past seasons, then it can work really well.

I have almost the exact same squad but Mitchell and Soucek where you have James and Anguissa. Would you not prefer the extra 0.5+ ITB and less benching headaches? Soucek could also become Klich giving a solid bencher alongside Lamptey.

Couple of questions for my wildcard team.

Is Kdb enough city cover? Could have Foden too but not a big fan
Is it ok to not have any Chelsea for the next month? Probably get Pulisic once he’s up to speed
Taylor and Lamptey good options to rotate with Robbo Saiss
Currently have Martial. Keep on wc or go Jesus (with DCL) which allows easy switch to Martial if/when needed

It sounds like most people think Salah is the most vital player to have. Or is it another? I don’t see why Mane doesn’t get much love if Salah does. He nearly always scores the same amount of points and there’s not much in it.

There's been some changes to what is and isn't a penalty this year. FIFA have taken over VAR, basically.

I think Jorginho drops out in Frank's preferred starting 11. Maybe a double pivot of Kovacic and Kante.

Jimenez and perhaps James Rodriguez or Richarlison to consider too.

I normally don't WC early but had a disastrous 2 GWs and my team is looking pitiful. Alli and Vinagre out of favour, Bissouma suspended and I hear that Davies' position is under threat.

Is a wildcard required or will a transfer or two make things better? If so who do you suggest? Thanks

      Personally, I'd wildcard here.

My team was somewhat similar and I had 2 poor GWs. Far happier with my wildcard team now.

I think if you see 5-6 required changes, its wildcard time.

McCarthy, Davies, Alli, Bissouma are issues for you. So you're right on the
