Scoutcast Episode 367 – Double Gameweek attention turns to Leeds and Saints

Joe and Seb are joined by David to look at the key issues facing Fantasy Premier League managers ahead of Double Gameweek 25.

As part of a flurry of Double Gameweeks, Leeds and Southampton take their turn to play twice in the upcoming set of fixtures.

As well as playing each other, the Yorkshire outfit take on Wolverhampton Wanderers, while the south coast side face Chelsea’s resolute defence.

With the more favourable of the fixtures, Leeds assets take top billing. As a fan of the club, Seb takes our trio on a deep dive into Marcelo Bielsa’s tactics, favoured line-up and team strengths, ahead of these important Gameweek 25 matches for Fantasy Premier League managers. This discussion includes David’s analysis on why one particular Leeds player is so key to their chances of goals and clean sheets.

Danny Ings (£8.4m) looks to be the main target for the Scoutcast crew among Saints options, especially with his lethal finishing. He could also be a shrewd long-term investment should his side gain further double Gameweeks over the next month.

Elsewhere, Joe wonders which well-owned players could be surplus to requirements in the clamour for Double Gameweek stars. Could Liverpool and Manchester United’s penalty takers be jettisoned? Or is a certain Aston Villa talisman the man to make way?

Our trio give an update on their mixed fortunes in Double Gameweek 24 so far and reveal their transfer and captaincy plans for the week ahead.

Meanwhile, next four fixtures are frisked as the short-term gain of Double Gameweeks is assessed alongside the longer-term points potential of planning ahead, for the single and Blank Gameweeks to come.

Is burn a viable option for Brighton?

4.2m for a sub defender would be very handy.

I've read somewhere that he should be nailed as long as March is injured, which is until May, but im not still completely sure whether to bring him or not

Worth losing any of these for Raphinha ?

    Don't have wildcard.

    Salah, Bruno, Son, Grealish, Gundogan

If yoy have 2fts or willing to take a hit then perhaps, son to raphinha and use the cash to upgrade fwd to Kane.
Personally did this and switched antonio+son for Kane+Raphinha

Sideways is better than backwards if it means getting in a DGWer too and Raph is an improvement on the forward he'll be losing.

I had same dilemma and went for son. Mainly because I would be able to buy him back for 0.1 less if I wanted him back. I wouldn't be able to buy grealish back if I went for him.

I'd consider Grealish but want him for 29 and currently don't have 0.2 spare to buy him back.

          Martinez McCarthy
          Targett Stones Cancelo Shaw Dallas
          Salah Son Bruno Raphinha Gundogan
          Ings Bamford Watkins

This is what I have at minute but could/will change. For BB 26, I've got around 2.8m in the bank and I like the flexibility it gives me, could do Ings to Kane and one of the Leeds guys out for -4. Or keep Ings and do Raph to Harvey Barnes or Bamford to DCL and upgrade Dallas....gives me a few options

    WC thoughts? BB in 26.

    Martinez Areola

Fulham might not have a double? I really hope they do as Areola would be a great pick but looking unlikely. Defence is a bit light, I'd want Raphinha and Bamford in there as well and maybe Ings

I'm getting it out of the way now, team was in decent shape but had 2/3 flags so can't see a better time to plan a BB than 26. I know there's an argument that it hurts your first XI but the chance to see that dark green bench with DGW for all my subs is what I live for! Will move money off the bench towards 29 and then decide if it's worth the FH once fixtures are confirmed.

That's the theory anyway, in practice I'm sure there will be plenty of fires to put out! But hopefully a strong bench can cover as I do it anyway.

The psychology of captain choice in dgw is interesting.

Fernandes is always a popular option each and every week whilst Gundogan formed a huge bandwagon in recent weeks and was a popular choice in gw24.

In hindsight it’s easy to say Gund was the best option with two games.
I wonder how many would have chosen him if you knew he would only play the one game?

    This leads into gw25 thinking...

Much easier to say a City player is a viable captain option but would you choose the likes of Ings or Bamford because they have 2 games or because you rate the fixtures? Fernandes still screams points vs hapless Newcastle.

    Who you choosing and why?

Also for those who haven’t heard the stat: Bruno has now played a full seasons worth of games (38) with 41 goal involvements and has averaged ~7.5 points per game in that time

RE: Picking a City player for captaincy in a DGW... Doesn't matter who they are, they're is always a substantial chance they miss out one match due to Pep.

Gundogan had better chances to at least start both, but honestly whilst that did factor into my decision a little, I would have captained Gundogan anyway. Form player in best team and both EVE/TOT looked horrible.

Don't get why everyone is getting hung up on hindsight. He had the best stats going into the GW too. I didn't want to captain Fernandes but was wary of the potential haul, so I personally brought in Cavani hoping to cover some points. Didn't really work out for Cavani - but overall, it did.

Having said that, I prefer to captain a player with two (decent) games, over a SGW player. Bruno could haul, but equally could blank. 180 mins gives you more chances than 90 mins & 2 games also gives you a higher floor.

Fair enough Hazz, it’s more fun to captain a dgw player
I’d say double the frustration if they blank in both!

Agree on Gundogan, he is/was THE form player so rightfully was captained. Just saying it’s easier to pick a city player in form to captain (I went Sterling) especially with the likes of Aguero and Kdb out injured vs other players such as Ings Bamford who are far less reliable and play for teams that could blank twice

Historically most big DGW scores are heavily built on one explosion.

It's not so much about getting points evenly over two games - it's about increasing your probability of hitting a massive score.

With that in mind, while Bruno has a fair shot at double figures against Newcastle, Bamford has shown explosive potential this season as well, and with two bites at the cherry he's clearly a better option.

"It's not so much about increasing your probability of hitting a massive score - its about catching the spread of points evenly over two games."

I really don't see why an angle on this is necessary. It's not about one thing or the other. It's about both. Increasing your proabability of getting points, and then getting points as a result, regardless of the distribution across your team. I think this kind of narrative-making is just adding to the noise when people are trying to remember that they are just trying to get points.

I liked what you had to say about increasing the probaility of getting a big score, but I overlooked the fact that you meant one big score. Also, I agree that Bamford is a better option given his two hites. But yeah, I suppose my comment is a retort to yours then. I don't think many people are trying to evenly spread their scores across fixtures.

Ings/Bamford should get 4 points plus 2 games to try and score goals in.
Fenandes gets 2 points plus 1 game to try and score goals in.

      Ings 4.9 PPM * 2 = 9.8
      Bamford 5.7 * 2 = 11.4
      Bruno 7.4 PPM * 1 = 7.4

Bruno also has a midweek game, so he has no advantage there.

Of course, this is simplistic, but it's fairly obvious to me why people favour DGW options. You just have to make sure they are generally good options, likely to outscore non-DGW options. If they end up blanking, it doesn't tell us anything significant about the decision we made.

I included Ings because he's my captain. Anyone who replies to this comment with an argument about ceilings needs to have a think. 😉

Was just about to post a similar calculation based on points per 90 mins. Why would you captain a player expected to get 7.4pts over a player expected to get 11.4pts? I just don't get it.

Has to be Bamford or Raphina. I will never captain a single gameweeker over a double gameweeker, the basic maths of it just favour the doubler every time.

Fernandes screamed points against WBA too and in the end he was somewhat fortunate to get anything at all. Bamford and Raphina are in good form themselves, 2 good fixtures, attacking side, whats not to like? Absolute no brainer imo.

These are averages of past games and doesn’t take into account current form and opponents

I just don’t think it’s as simple as the numbers, albeit I can see why you and many use this as the basis for doing it.
Look at how many captained Pope this week. Logic was there with the 2 games and I chose to play Areola over Martinez and yet both these GK couldn’t match the inform keeper in the league over one game.

Guess anybody is capable of hauling in any single gameweek so you just need to pick and choose when to be different

The psychology is interesting, and in a higher scoring game like fantasy NFL there might be a much stronger case to look towards a tried and tested asset in a SGW than a less attractive asset in a a double.

Taking NFL as an example, if the average for a good running back is 15 points and and that score is based on a low-risk portfolio of rushing yards, receiving yard, rushing touchdowns and receiving touchdowns, you could confidently go with that player over one who averages 7 points and plays twice.

But FPL scoring relies much more on points spikes, making it much harder to assess the likelihood of returns. Goals are a comparatively rare event for any given player and it's much harder to predict when these are going to come. The width of a post can make the different between a player finishing on 2 points or 10. Salah is still a great shout for the golden boot, is one of the most talented players in the league, and blanked in five consecutive games recently. The best attacking players in the league, in a stellar season, average something around or slightly less than a single goal a game.

So the reason I want to go for a DGW captain where possible is not because I know that a player has a huge points floor and I'm likely to double that score, but more because you get two chances of them turning in a performance where they get a couple of attacking returns.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 1 month ago

How about a player who averages 7.5 points and plays twice?

I would say there's no way to separate them based on this alone. A high- 'risk portfolio' (projected 7.5 points) player with a greater point variability week-to-week could be a better option than the (projected) 15pter or a worse option. It's a 50/50 call for glory or disappointment.

My thinking was it doesn't matter too much what a player's average is in FPL given the huge amount of uncertainty around predicting returns in a game where individual returns have huge significance (compared to other games).

So for me, buying two lottery tickets is more important than theoretical points floors (though I choose the player who is most likely to beat the odds of course!)

I think we're kind of making the same point actually, aren't we?

Fair points. Obviously some arguments both ways
I mean look at Gundogan I’m sure some people would have chosen Bruno over him for captain if they knew he was only playing once or yet wouldn’t have used TC on him....yet he still produced a monster score in his sgw

    10. noquarternt
      • 8 Years

I think it's interesting but comes down to floors and ceilings. (Caveat that you have to be sure they'll probably play both which for someone like Kane for example is very very likely).

      1 game min = 2pts

      2 game min = 4pts

Add on to that, double the amount of time to score/assist/get 2 clean sheets, max of 6 bps etc.

Bruno is a very good option, but I think 2 good games for any reasonably prolific player makes them the better captain.
