Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 31?

Fantasy Premier League managers may have to look past this season’s most reliable assets for the Gameweek 31 captaincy.

Son-Heung min (£9.4m), Harry Kane (£11.7m)and Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) have been among the most reliable skippers in 2020/21 but Sunday afternoon’s meeting between Spurs and Manchester United has blown the latest debate wide open.

A number of alternative options have emerged including Diogo Jota (£6.9m)and Mohamed Salah (£12.4m)who starred in Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Arsenal and face Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Manchester City’s starting XI for their lunch-time meeting with Leeds. While this is a favourable fixture for Pep Guardiola’s men, it is sandwiched between two key UEFA Champions League ties with Borussia Dortmund.

As always, the Captain Sensible article is here to help you with this week’s captaincy conundrum. Given that this text includes plenty of analysis backed up by the extensive data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

CAPTAIN POLL

As shown above, Salah is the leader of this week’s Captain Poll, having gained 27.4% of total votes so far. The Egyptian scored in his last two appearances for the club (against Arsenal and Real Madrid) and looks to be getting back to his goalscoring best, just in time for the final stretch in the Premier League Golden Boot race.

Just behind him in the poll sits Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) with 17.7% of votes from our users. The Belgian was unlucky to come out without any returns against Leicester City in Gameweek 30, but played a crucial part in his team’s win over Borussia Dortmund midweek, opening the scoreline in the first half and providing a crucial pass in the build-up for the late winner. The match-up against Leeds United could be a great opportunity for a big haul, although there is heavy uncertainty over the likelihood of him starting.

This season’s top goal-scorer, as well as the top assist provider, Kane has gained 9.0% of total votes. The England international has been in outstanding form in this campaign, often winning games for his team single-handedly.

That said, in Gameweek 31, Kane will face a tough opponent in Manchester United. He may have scored 16 points in the reverse fixture but the chances of another double-digit haul are not too strong considering the Red Devils have improved significantly since their 6-1 thrashing at Old Trafford.

The top-five list is closed by the aforementioned Jota (8.6% of votes) and Raheem Sterling (£11.3m, 5.2%), who could turn out to be a shrewd one Gameweek captaincy punt.

Masuaku should be nailed as long as WHU play 5ATB which is until Rice is back.

A lot of talk about Alonso and threat from Chilwell, with "cheap and safe Rudiger". Is James a threat from Azpil on the other side? 5.0 for serious attacking threat looks a decent alternative to Rudiger/alonso?

Nope unless Chelsea reverts to 4ATB. CHO is a possible threat to James (5ATB) but it seems like he has the position nailed.

I'm doing the same juggle. Getting a centre back that's not 100% nailed, doesn't excite me. Would love to have Alonso but GW33 makes things difficult with his potential rotation and the blank. Can't afford Azpi. James could work

I've gone James on my WC.

I think he has the RWB position pretty nailed.

Good 3rd striker if you plan to BB. He could lose his place after one bad game and when Barnes is back. I would rather go fodder if you don't plan to use the 3rd FWD.

Nice - like it and think Alonso a perfectly respectable punt.

I'd be half-tempted to switch out Lingard to Mount if Antonio is out. Unwillingly. But WH fixtures are very mixed in next 5 with Leicester Chelsea Everton as home fixtures.

I like Alonso's ceiling, could've hauled in the WBA game.

I'm happy to give Lingard a few games and see how much Antonio being out affects his performance. He is in great form at the moment and WHU are vying for top 4. I can bring in Raphinha in 34 if Lingard doesn't perform.

With Alonso, Rudiger and TAA as my main defenders, I'm happy to keep Dallas on the bench until his fixture turn. He is still a great option in the tough fixture run, playing OOP and getting good chances to score

I really like your team. I have a few similar dilemmas as you and you are taking a different path.

          I would love your input.

Was set on A before Antonio injury

Leaning towards B and Dias could well be anyone.

C is a for a Vardy Party gamble

          A. Mendy (Forster)
          Rudiger, Shaw, *TAA, Holding, *Mitchell
          Salah, Bruno, Jota, Son, *Lingard

          B. Mendy (Forster)
          Rudiger, Shaw, *TAA, Holding, Dias
Salah, Bruno, Jota, Son, *Maddison or Mount or Lingard

          C. Mendy (Forster)

At first glance C looks amazing. But you will have a hard decision choosing which attacker to bench in GW31,32,34,35. You may just end up benching Iheanacho every game in which case you may as well not buy him and put the money into the defence.

          2. Tonyawesome69
            • 5 Years

Ok so Team A is out due to Antonio injury.

I prefer Vardy over Maddison for 2nd LEI player. Mount and Lingard are two good picks. Both are in form. Hard to pick out the two.

If I assume Lingard, it is effectively TAA, Dias and Davis (fodder) vs Philips, Mitchell (fodder) and Vardy. That is a tough one. Vardy hasn't scored for a while and when he is playing with Nacho, it looks like he is assisting Nacho rather than scoring himself. Philips and Dias have the same ceiling 6 CS points. TAA either plays really well or gets targeted as he is poor at defending. I would go team B since it is close to the team I have.

Thank you guys both points well made. I guess it is B, with the last choice being Maddison/Mount/Lingard

If I did pick C, then i think Lingard would be benched the most as well until there fixture turn which is why i got rid of Leeds in the first place so that doesn't really make sense 🙂

very interesting it's making me question wether I should have Sterling instead of Salah just to captain him against City and then I can bring Salah back in.

I wouldn't go Azpi if you already have Mendy. I'd try fit TAA in by downgrading him and Wood to 4.2 because your 5 midfielders will play most of the time so you dont need a 3rd striker

If you want to cover BGW33, you could choose Konsa, as he will also give you a DGW. You may be short of players in the BGW33 with Son, Kane, Davis already on the bench, and Alonso rotating with Chilwell.

Good point, will have two FT for 33 so I'm ok. Can't quite afford Konsa and don't see a CS in his dgw (United & Everton)

Mendy, because you can have Holding for 4.2.

I like this idea. But comparison tools still rate Phillips higher for a 0.2 saving. Is holding absolutely nailed on?

I would assume he is first choice for a around a month while Luiz is out. Phillips all good if you aren't getting TAA

Thanks. I am getting TAA so may do Holding so I get at least a week of double bubble on the pool attack before moving to spurs.

Only difference is defence gone TAA + Alonso Castagne Veltman and Holding

Interesting. I know Alonso plays either 90 or 0 min which is good but is he worth the extra over Rudiger? He's had 1 assist in his last 6 starts. It also affects your other cheap defenders

Hit the post twice last game, always so dangerous, I want it! Holding and Veltman should be decent enough bench cover? Castagne actually costs the same lol

Anyone considering Gundogan as a captain pick?
If KDB does not start and Gundo does, there is a good chance he can play more forward and get some good returns.

I can see Gundo bamboozling Leeds man-marking, arriving late in the box and smashing in a couple of goals. He's my captain. I think he'll start, but even if he comes on with 30 mins left I still see him returning.

Great, I’m on him currently too.
I hope he will be a great differential captain pick as I had too many rank drops when I did not even own him and was captained by many in my ML’s and hauled ! :/

True. I think if we are chasing in our ML’s when others just have KDB, I think it’s worth the shot.

It’s either him or Jota this GW but will edge on Gundo just because they play Leeds.

I'm starting to think both might start. Gundogan (since moving into the number 8 role) has been rested just twice, in the last 2 matches (one before, one after after break). KDB all season (ignoring his injury and return from that) has only been rested 3 times, once being the Fulham game before the break. It's impossible to know honestly but I don't think Pep will underestimate Leeds, they played very well against City last time out and he has a lot of respect for Bielsa so I don't see him putting out an entire second team.

        Great observation Nate.
Do you think Gundo will play deeper (less opportunities in the box) though if KDB starts too?

Hard to know but it's seemed like it doesn't make a huge difference who is around Gundogan. The bigger issue for a while was whether a recognised striker was playing as it seemed to limit Gundogan a bit but Aguero dropped deep a fair bit against Leicester leaving others to make forward runs so I'd say he'll probably be fine

Crazy to think Liverpool haven't won at home since GW13 and have lost their last 6 in a row there scoring only once (and that was a fairly dubious penalty). Why are so many targeting double-ups (and even more in some cases) of Pool players this week? I get their fixtures are turning but Villa aren't going to be the easiest to beat despite their poor recent form and might have Grealish back. Next week onwards sure but I don't get the rush for this one. Even not just focusing on home form Liverpool have only won 3 of their last 9 (and they were against teams in the bottom half). Am I missing something here, did they look that good against Arsenal or was the scoreline against Madrid not a fair representation of the match or something?

      1. Grealish won’t be back
      2. Liverpool are capable of flat track bullying weaker teams, particularly the likes of Salah
      3. They need wins to make top 4

Point 2 is the interesting one

No doubt they have the capability but their last three team hauls were against WH Spurs and Arsenal (all away) and not SHU Wolves and Norwich. Could be entirely coincidental of course but the pattern is of failing to break down bottom half teams.

      Few things to consider:

      - Martinez has papered over the cracks for Villa.

      - Arsenal were a shambles (and have been for a while)

      - Madrid looked world class; however they made several last ditch challenges and blocks. On another day Pool would have grabbed a couple more goals.

      - Pool's defence still looks weak against anyone with pace.

For me, it's not about if they win or lose. Just that they attack and score - which they usually do and have been doing more recently. I will take another 7-2 to Villa as long as Salah and TAA are involved in the 2!
