Eliteserien 2021 Scout Picks – Runde 1

GOALKEEPER

Sondre Rossbach (ODD – 5.5mNOK, 10.7%) vs. Sandefjord (H)

• Sandefjord (H) = Potentially easiest fixture of season

• High clean sheet probability

• Only the relegated Aalesunds (313) attempted fewer shots than Sandefjord (344) in the 2020 season

• Sandefjord’s goal threat has significantly diminished after losing creative players Deyvr Vega and Rufo

DEFENCE

Marcus Holmgren Pedersen (MOL – 6.5mNOK, 10.7%) vs. Kristiansund (H)

• Kristiansund (H) = Winnable fixture with high clean sheet potential

• A dangerous right-back with bags of potential

• Last season over 30% of his accurate passes were in the final 1/3 – only Rosenborg’s Erlend Dahl Reitan (6.0mNOK) and Kristiansund’s Christoffer Aasbak (5.5mNOK) could do better. (30.19% & 35.10%)

• Kristiansund have failed to replace Amahl Pellegrino and could really struggle in front of goal (Pellegrino scored almost 50% of Kristiansund’s 2020 league goals)

Fredrik Andre Bjorkan (B/G – 6.0mNOK, 45.0%) vs. Tromso (H)

• Tromso (H) = Opening game of season versus newly promoted opposition

• 6.0m feels cheap for one of the best attacking defenders in the league

• Last time out no other defender attempted and completed as many dribbles (45/76), played as many accurate passes in the final 1/3 (376) and boasted an overall passing accuracy of over 87% (56% of those passes = opposition half)

• Glimt’s average possession was 60%+ in 2020

• In best defence in the league + high attacking threat

Odin Luras Bjortuft (ODD – 5.0mNOK, 5.9%) vs. Sandefjord (H)

• Good with the ball and a great all-round centre back

• Cheap route into the Odd defence for one of the games they should definitely be looking to not concede

• Attempted and played more passes than any other defender last season

• Good differential pick for opening game

Viljar Helland Vevatne (VIK – 5.0mNOK, 5.0%) vs. Brann (H)

• Brann (H) = Viking strong favourites

• The only defender to score more goals than Vevatne (3) last season was Espen Ruud (7.0mNOK) with 6

• Last time these two sides faced each other at the SR-Bank Arena, the home side won 2-0

• Vevatne is the same price as teammate Henrik Heggheim (5.0mNOK) but in less than half the number of teams – same defence, more goal threat, bigger differential

MIDFIELD

Aron Donnum (VIF – 10.0mNOK, 30.1%) vs. Rosenborg (H)

• Rosenborg (H) = Not an easy game but he’s one of the most fixture-proof players in the game

• Best dribbler in the league (70 successful dribbles in the league last season – 19 more than anyone else)

• Created 9 big chances last year – more than any other Valerenga player and his only teammate to play more key passes (36) was Christian Dahle Borchgrevink (6.0mNOK) with 44

• This is a huge game. Rosenborg are huge rivals – non-geographical – and an opening day win, at home, would be the perfect start for ‘The Bohemians.’

Sondre Sorli (V) (B/G – 9.5mNOK, 9.4%) vs. Tromso (H)

• He’s the main man on the right side of Glimt’s front line and their cheapest attacking option

• Good opening fixture for him to open his account with the Champions

• Has looked lively in pre-season and strong chance is on penalties

• Is a better player than his stats would suggest – being surrounded by quality players I think we’ll see the best of him this season

Eirik Hestad (MOL – 8.5mNOK, 5.1%) vs. Kristiansund (H)

• Molde have a big squad but Hestad is still arguably one of their best players

• Good chance Magnus Wolff Eikrem (12.5mNOK) won’t be fit for this game which means it would take a miracle for him not to feature

• A versatile and dynamic player, he can play on the wing or in the middle

• Eikrem was the only Molde player to produce more accurate passes in the final 1/3 or big chances per 90 minutes than Hestad last season (19.93 – 18.58 & 0.97 – 0.32)

Joe Bell (VIK – 5.0mNOK, 2.9%) vs. Brann (H)

• Might have only created one big chance last season but played as many key passes (37) as Johan Hove (8.0mNOK) and more than Aron Donnum, Kristoffer Velde (8.5mNOK) and new teammate Kevin Kabran (8.5mNOK) (all 36) to name a few

• His price belies how important he is to this Viking team and he’s surrounded by better players than he was last season

• Huge differential option and would still be a player I’d have in my team if he was 0.5-1.0m more expensive

• Creative, hard-working and never loses the ball – in fact he was dispossessed a mere 8 times in the whole of last season

FORWARDS

Veton Berisha (K) (VIK – 10.5mNOK, 38.3%) vs. Brann

• 2020 Stats: 16G, 7A, 29 BFP = 163pts

• Main man at Viking and the best goal scorer in the league – should be in everyone’s team

• Great team player – wants to provide for his teammates as well as score

• He’s an obvious pick especially for this week – no need to overthink it, just bring him in and keep him in – forever

Tobias Lauritsen (ODD – 8.0mNOK, 6.8%) vs. Sandefjord (H)

• Has looked good in pre-season and looked fantastic before his injury last season

• Will be Odds’ main attacking outlet and offers assist potential as well as goals

• A full 1.5m cheaper than Mushaga Bakenga (9.5mNOK)

• He’s very tall (1.94m)

• A relatively cheap option for a player with a very high likelihood of scoring this week

Thought it was a second for Botheim first. He looks much better than he did at RBK, and I'm already worried not owning him!

Sofascore have both Botheim and Berisha with a brace yet the game has own goals for both.

I'm hoping the former is correct as that affects my points hugely hah.

BG goal now updated to Nilson. I knew my left field pick would get on the score sheet today. I'll treasure that -1 whilst Bell 5 points sit on the bench.

He was one of the standout options, and even though I didn't captain him, it was good to see him deliver from the start.

Yay! Managed to forget/miss the deadline for this. From the team I quickly picked when I registered, I've only got 7 players with fixtures in GW1/GW2 (and 2 of them didn't play in GW1). What's the deal with the missing fixtures, anyway? Covid?

Only 69 mins for Ceïde. Despite the double coming up, I'll be tempted to look at options for next GW.

With 10 minutes to go I was deciding between who to play out of Hestad and Zachariassen. Went with Hestad due to having the far easier fixture(s).

For 10m he actually doesn't look expensive. He's had a really good game in one of Rosenborg's hardest fixtures of the season.

The first few gameweeks are often about figuring out what the XI's are likely to be and identifying those players who will likely hit early form.

Most teams will be hit and miss - I don't think Ceide was necessarily a bad choice but I was probably never going to pick a Rosenborg player for this gameweek as there's little reason to against such opposition.

My reasoning for picking Ceïde (beside GW3 in mind), was that I didn't trust Vålerenga to be that good defensively. They weren't either, so it's a bit of a shame Ceïde didn't look better on the ol' eye test. Right now I'm thinking Molde mid in to target the Tromsø fixture; Ceïde to Aursnes will make Hopmark to Fridjónsson a possibility – either for a hit or the following GW, when Viking plays Tromsø.

3 BFP for Botheim. Not too sure about that! I own the guy but certainly don't think he was better than Saltnes or Fet.

    I would have gone:

    3 - Fet
    2 - Saltnes
    1 - Botheim

I think Moe should've easily had 3 points. It was quite a bad game by Glimt overall, even if they win by 3 goals. This is just one of those games where people struggle to separate individual performances from result.

Not sure why you think Fet should have easily been beaten by Moe to the 3 BFP - I'm more than capable of viewing an individual performance as good or bad independent of a result.

        Moe:
83 touches, 69/73 passes (not too surprising for a centre back in team which keeps the ball, still, decent stats)
1 key pass, 5/7 long balls
4 clearances, 2 interceptions, 1 tackle (to be expected, still good)
1/3 ground duels won, 2/2 aerial duels won (not too surprising as is a capable centre back)
        1 shot off target
        1 foul
        1 Yellow card

        Fet:
        45 touches, 25/30 passes
2 key passes, 1 big chance created (not sure what else he's meant to do - and thats from just 25 accurate passes)
        1 blocked shot, 1 interception, 4 tackles
6/11 ground duels won (combative performance)
        1 shot on target
        1 assist
        2 fouls, fouled twice

I thought it was quite obvious they both played well, offering different services to the team.
Looked like Glimt took the foot of the pedal earlier in the second half than we're used to seeing. Looked like game management more than anything. Tromso kept on targeting Glimt's right side but they defended well enough, restricting Tromso to only manage 2 on target shots from 13 attempts.

I don't think we would have saw that at all if it weren't for Glimt's early goals. The result might have flattered Glimt somewhat but they had more of the ball, more on target shots, strung more passes together and full deserved to win. That's not to say they can perform like that against better opposition and not be caught out but they still won scored 3 goals, won the goal, didn't concede and Fet and Saltnes looked very good together in midfield.

And if we ignore those objective stats, Fet showed good movement, alertness and continued to press as the game went on. He looks comfortable in that role and was able to react to the team going forward as well as when they had to fall back.

Moe had a decent game and deserves credit for that no doubt - he put in a strong position as a centre-half.
Bjorkan also put in a good shift running up and down the wing the entire game but because he doesn't get an attacking return I think a lot of people will look at that and think he's not done as well as he should when in reality he played the same amount of passes in the final 1/3 as Donnum and 7 more than him.

While the overall team performance might have been lacking, there were certainly decent individual performances.

I'm on WC - and just realised I didn't have Digne in my draft.
Your comment made me reflect on how I'd get him in.
          Would you:
          A) Shaw & Lingard (play 433 with Wilson - Shaw benched ready for 37)
          B) Digne & Raphinha (play 532 with Wilson benched)

          Rest of team is:
          Meslier/Forster
          Dallas/Dawson/TAA/Robbo/xxx
          Salah/Bruno/Son/ESR/xxx
          DCL/Wilson/Antonio

Super happy having picked Aursnes - even if it was a favourable fixture he could've had a hat-trick of assists on top of the two he got and had a goal (wrongly?) disallowed. Lovely goals from EUA and Brynhildsen but you know Aursnes is going to get 2000+ minutes if he's fit.

The stats suggested he was a great pick and he's a player I knew I'd want in my team long term.

Went for Hestad to try and get as many points in an a game where Molde were strong favourites and it backfired. Quite annoying how EUA and Ola scored (the other two mids I considered for the opening game) but Hestad blanked. Felt a bit short changed there I have to say.

Aursnes was a good pick and fair play for going with him straight off the bat. In a tweet before the start of the season I said he'd be the player of the year this season and well he couldn't have started much better could he

So Botheim + Aursnes vs. Islamovic + Hussain is what separates the wheat from the chaff after Rd1. Could be reversed in Rd2.

Too late to switch Islamovic to Botheim ahead of RBK's double but if everyone ends up with a template of Berisha-Botheim-Fodder up front, may be difficult to make headway. Keep the faith!

      That's a good thing though.

We all considered Aursnes. And those of us who didn't have Saltnes thought of him too.

It's not as if these are left-field picks.

I went Hestad and Sorli over Aursnes and Saltnes. Didn't work out but it wasn't a huge loss imo and at least we've seen those players are still viable.

I'd rather find this out in GW1 hah
