Can new FPL forward Daka rival Vardy and Iheanacho?

Leicester City announced the signing of Patson Daka from Red Bull Salzburg at the end of June, with the 22-year-old forward priced up at £7.5m by Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

After a reported £23m deal was agreed with the Austrian club, Daka signed a five-year contract at the King Power Stadium and will enjoy a full pre-season under Brendan Rodgers.

The Zambia international will provide competition for the identically priced Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) and veteran Jamie Vardy (£10.5m), with his arrival a concern for those Fantasy managers planning to start the season with either player.

We’ll run the rule over Daka in this piece but don’t forget that you can find reams of Opta player and team data on Vardy, Iheanacho and the Foxes in our Premium Members Area, with the Player Comparison Tool – as shown below (click to expand) – a handy way of pitting two assets head to head.

Full-year memberships (which now cover a whole 12 months from the start of a subscription rather than ending on June 1 as standard) are now available for £20, with some exciting new innovations to come this pre-season.

THE HISTORY

Having come up through the ranks in his home country, Daka secured a five-year deal at Salzburg after impressing during a trial period in Austria in 2017. He had previously made his senior Zambia debut in 2015, at the age of just 16.

The attacker made his full breakthrough into the Salzburg first-team set-up during the 2019/20 season, when he made 31 league appearances as well as playing all six Champions League group stage ties.

That was also the start of two prolific scoring seasons for the Zambian. In his breakthrough year, Daka netted 24 times and notched eight assists over those 31 showings. That equated to scoring once every 78 minutes.

He managed to improve that ratio last season, logging a goal every 72 minutes over 28 league appearances. Along with 27 strikes, he also provided seven assists. Daka ended the campaign as the top scorer in the Austrian Bundesliga and was named the league’s player of the season.

PLAYING STYLE

Daka himself aspires to make the kind of impact that other African stars have had on the Premier League:

“To see our big brothers like (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang, (Mohamed) Salah, (Sadio) Mane, it’s something that gives me the dream that I can also make it. I can be like them. They are my inspiration, knowing that they also come from Africa. I think when people are making those kind of comparisons, it’s great; looking at the status of Sadio Mane, the kind of football he plays and the kind of person that he is.” – Daka speaking to BBC in January

Milutin Sredejovic, the Zambia national team coach, continues the Mane comparison while likening Daka to the outstanding Samuel Eto’o:

“I would say he’s on the road to replace what Samuel Eto’o once was in representing Africa and African football. He could be compared to Sadio Mane or Samuel Eto’o, with the level of skill and speed that he has. With the sense for space, sense of positioning, in the right place at the right time.” – Milutin Sredejovic

Sredejovic will be hoping that Leicester City proves to be the right place for Daka to develop:

“Knowing his heart, mind and soul, I’m fully convinced that he’s on a very good road to reach his full potential. I believe he has everything that it takes. Now the other factors are important; to choose the right environment where he could excel that would suit his potential.” – Milutin Sredejovic

The striker is known for his explosive pace and cold-bloodedness in front of goal. His former strike partner, one Erling Haaland, gives Daka inspiration for making the grade at a higher level:

“(Haaland’s success is) a very great inspiration because I remember very well that different people used to say, ‘Erling can only score in Austria’, and people think the Austrian league is not really competitive. But I think every competition has its own level. I think it has been proven. Look at the likes of Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and (Takumi) Minamino – a lot of players that have played here really excelled.” – Patson Daka

THE STATISTICS

Across all competitions last season, Daka scored 34 times in 42 appearances while racking up 12 assists.

Having played 2,905 minutes, the forward registered a goal contribution every 66 minutes. That was just better than his ratio of 68 minutes during the 2019/20 campaign.

In the Austrian Bundesliga, he returned 1.44 goals plus assists per 90 in 2019/20, with a figure of 1.43 in 2020/21.

Daka’s shots per 90 minutes figures for the two seasons were 4.23 and 4.66, while his numbers per 90 for shots on target were 2.31 and 2.21.

Those figures stack up very well to the leading FPL forwards of last season but it’s always worth bearing in mind the sizeable gulf in class between the respective divisions.

Above: FPL forwards sorted by shots per 90 minutes in 2020/21 (minimum five apps)

THE PROSPECTS

Considering Daka’s style of play, it seems likely that the pacy forward is a long-term replacement for Jamie Vardy.

“What he’s doing, everyone is seeing he’s scoring for fun. His biggest strength is his pace. He uses it very well. We are seeing him develop into a good striker, with the strength, pace, and a great conversion rate.” Zambia international Larry Bwalya

But whether that scenario will immediately play out in Brendan Rodgers’ line-up is anyone’s guess. Vardy may be 34 but undoubtedly still has a big part to play at Leicester, so it could be that Daka is forced to bide his time in the opening few weeks of 2021/22.

The nightmare scenario from an FPL perspective is that Rodgers eventually rotates his three strikers around two spots – or even worse, just one.

The likely return to fitness of Harvey Barnes (£7.0m) will throw another spanner into the Leicester line-up works, with the winger previously excelling in a 4-1-4-1 system before his injury.

Daka will undoubtedly have an impact on Leicester assets, particularly Vardy and Iheanacho. How much of an impact and how early in the campaign it begins are questions for pre-season and the opening Gameweeks of the campaign.

Austrian league similar standard to Championship but not so physical.
Leicester get their transfers right usually but Nacho is their best forward by far if he keeps up with last year.
A wait and see but taking the Nacho chance is where I am going.

Nacho’s stats are so good from last year and on the eye test he was shooting on sight

However it’s not unheard of for a player to have a great run in then struggle to get going

Any of Wilson, Antonio, Watkins and nacho could do really well in the first few games hope I can get it correct!

A crystal ball we don't have so prior form, the eye test, the team they play for and fixtures are what we must go by. Each 7.5 forward has an issue somewhere. Nach ticks most boxes.

        Not just from last year

When Nacho was 18 he was a child-prodigy & getting 10 returns in 800 minutes for Man City

He has previous as being rated a potentially world class forward - different players develop at different rates, and he’s still only 24 remember…

on last season’s form after he won his place he looks like he’s finally getting towards those initial early standards he set for himself

      Yep Vardy is obviously done

When you think in his prime he got a whopping 32 attacking returns in 3,100 minutes - he’s slowly declined all the way down to where he is now - with just 29 attacking returns this season in 2,800 minutes

He’s been priced out of the game in FPL, at least early on - if that’s what you mean … but to say he’s “completely shot” is… well I won’t say what it is in case people get upset

    Donnarumma.
    Alba, Spinazolla, Maguire, Maehle.
    KDB, Berardi, Damsgaard.
    Immobile, Kane, Morata.

Great team considering situation you are in.

I believe KDB will play against Italy. Also Berardi will get play time, as a sub or from beginning. Only concern for me would be Alba but not worth a hit.

Lots ignoring KDB in FPL drafts (or rather city, but he's the only nailed attacker at the start of the season). It's easy when you look at the first game, but then it is Norwich at home. You can see the panic Fernandes to KDB transfers now. Which is why I like having all 3 from the start, opens up a lot of options going forward.

He could do really, really well - it’s KDB after all

But I can see why folks are swerving initially - he isn’t a zero percent rotation risk - more like 10-20% rotation risk, then probably another 10-20% injury risk given he is so injury prone now, then maybe another 10-20% that if he plays he may not be in form, or may not contribute attacking returns, the way he gave away penalties, or missed them when taking, the amount of chances he missed when playing the advanced role in the run up to his injury, the fact that 12m means regular captaincy needed amidst the rotation/injury/form risks

All of those percentages are low in isolation… but when you stack them up, you can see why folks are probably playing percentages with him

But no one would be suprised with a double or treble return vs Spurs either mind you… personally I’ll back Salah & Bruno early doors & monitor how the three of them go

Obviously City have the talent to thrash anyone but, with tot, ARS, lei, che, liv in their first 7 games and the good captaincy rotation between Salah and Fernandes, I'm looking to get him in my team week from week 8.

I think fixtures are overblown when it comes to City.

All the fixtures are green for them.

Only Liverpool and Chelsea out of those is not a fairly straightforward win imo.

I agree, but for a premium player like KDB would you be happy captaining him with those fixtures over the Salah/Fernandes pairing of nor, BUR, wol, NEW, CRY, bre, EVE?
The only week that you would want him as captain is week 2 when he is a slightly better option than Salah vs BUR.

Not really. Son will still be a good option against teams that are fighting relegation regardless of whether Kane stays. It just meant that Son is no longer fixture proof and you need to decide on when to own him based on fixtures. I'm happy to have him from GW2-4.

Leeds conceded 21 goals in the second half of the season, Arsenal conceded 20.
Newcastle conceded 35 and Wolves 26 (and I expect a dip in performance) so I'd prefer Fernandes as captain in those weeks over Salah vs Leeds and KDB vs Ars.

Bruno is a good captain GW1 imo - Utd Leeds can be a mental game with fans there - 8 goals at old Trafford the last time & Bruno triple returned

Leeds were also involved in a 7 goal thriller at Anfield in GW1 last year…

Coming the other direction… Norwich were solid as a rock (at home) last year - something like 14 cleansheets in 23 home games Liverpool & Salah may find it tough if they turn up thinking they’re entitled to a cricket score

Probably hard to swerve Salah GW2… but then again let’s see how everything looks after GW1 because Bruno’s GW2 fixture is low key delicious, as are GW3 & GW4 - and if Utd are flying with Sancho’s addition and a few other signings they could be the team to back early doors

Leeds are no longer a team to target to score against. They've been harder to break down in second half of the season. Salah is the clear favourites in GW1.

Totally agree about Leeds solidity (since Llorente bedded in) but Man Utd Leeds is a very different game - fans will do strange things and both Leeds and Utd will attack & leave spaces on a big pitch

Throw in the euphoria over Sancho’s signing (with more big names to follow allegedly) and it’s an absolute powder keg of a fixture

With Norwich’s home defensive record I’m leaning Bruno at the minute, Salah in a close second

Their last game was 0-0 though. And Norwich's defensive record was based on championship which is pretty much irrelevant. My current whipping boys team is just Palace though.

That game was at Elland Road though, remember GW1 is at Old Trafford - also wouldn’t say every single aspect of Championship form is automatically irrelevant

it can be very tricky to smash 3 or 4 goals into an underdog defence when they have only 15 goals conceded in 23 up home games for example

Which is why Liverpool may well find it tough to score more than one or two if they turn up thinking they’re entitled to a cricket score

I think Salah + Son is the best combo looking at the fixtures.

However, I think the case for Bruno is more structural. The 12m+ set is Salah/Mane, Bruno, KdB & Kane. We want at least 1, probably 2, and potentially 3 of them.

Starting with Bruno is an easy switch to KdB (1 transfer)/Kane (2 transfers) if required. If you start with Son, there will be additional value tied up elsewhere, so it could easily be 3 transfers to work someone like Kane in.

    Benzema + Depay + Wijnaldum + Dumfries To Kane + Sterling + Shaw + Morata for -4

Now this article has planted the idea of Daka being Mane 2.0(Southampton days).

I might consider having him in my team if he plays a significant role in pre season.

He could probably be a super sub. Which is fine IMO if he gets 30 mins most games at the start.

Who would you captain between Stones and Maehle for this GW - It's a draft game so no decent attacking options

England 53% chance of CS; Denmark 40%
Stones 14.3% chance of scoring; Maehle 20%
Assume Maehle's odds of assist are better too, so even by the odds it's impossible to call!

Maybe not directly (Daka a centre-forward, Barnes predominantly a left-winger) but the signing could be a signal that Rodgers is keen on sticking with two up top in this wing-back system, which means one spot fewer for a Barnes/Perez type.

I’ve had Barnes in most drafts. Think he is .5 underpriced along with Maddison. Was great last season when fit.

    Hey guys. Current Euro team:

    Pickford
Dumfries (X), Di Lorenzo, Maehle, Spinazzola
    Wijnaldum (X), Insigne, Berardi
    Ronaldo (X), Benzema (X), Depay (X)
    [Stek (X), Sarabia, Gosens (X), Forsberg (X)].

Thinking of bringing in Kane, Morata, Sterling and Maguire for a -4.

    QUESTION IS...
Is bringing in Lukaku on top of these worth the -8?

Think it’s a wait and see on pre season minutes, it’s a shame Ferguson for Palace somehow went from 0 minutes and 3.8m last season to 4.5m this year as he could’ve been a shout if he was at 4

Brandon Williams may join Southampton and Andrew Omobamidele ended season well for Norwich so may start but nothing certain

    5. Marmalade Forest
      • 6 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

The Norwich lad Omobamidele was the second choice CB back up.

Hanley, Gibson and Zimmerman will probably play ahead of him if fit.

Sorensen could be an interesting 4.5 OOP pick if he gets the nod and Norwich don’t sign any/many more players.
