Van Dijk comeback to boost Alexander-Arnold and Robertson’s FPL returns

The ‘Sleeper’ series has made a return to the Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who failed or didn’t have the chance to live up to former glories last season.

Having already considered Matt Doherty, we take a look at Virgil van Dijk’s (£6.5m) return to fitness, his own FPL appeal and how the Dutchman’s comeback might impact on Liverpool’s defensive prospects.

Van Dijk fitness latest

The key thing to note about van Dijk is that, at the time of writing, his availability for Gameweek 1 remains in question.

The Netherlands centre-back suffered a serious knee injury in Gameweek 5 of 2020/21 and returned to pre-season training in July of this year.

On van Dijk and fellow injury returnee Joe Gomez (£5.0m), Jurgen Klopp said recently:

Virg and Joe will not have double sessions now for the first few days with the team; they have a second session of the day but it’s with Andreas Schlumberger, with the rehab department, physiotherapy, these kinds of things. That’s for these two. [They] look really good. I don’t know exactly when we can make the next steps but it will happen in the next four weeks, for sure – we will get a big step forward.

Once fully fit, we can safely assume that van Dijk will be back at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

Liverpool’s defence: with and without van Dijk

Liverpool defence still suspect but attacking returns continue to flow

The Dutchman joined Liverpool in January 2018, making his debut in Gameweek 24.

Before his arrival, the Reds had conceded 36 big chances in 23 Gameweeks. In the following 15 Gameweeks, Liverpool allowed just 18 of these high-quality chances.

In the subsequent season, van Dijk’s first full campaign at Anfield, Klopp’s outfit could boast the meanest defence in the league.

Liverpool defensive stats 2018/19TotalRank v other PL teams
Goals conceded221st
Clean sheets211st
Shots conceded3072nd
Shots in the box conceded1922nd
Shots on target conceded962nd
Big chances conceded402nd
Expected goals conceded (xGC)28.952nd

Van Dijk was also a real goal threat, scoring four times from inside the box, including three headers.

The obvious one is to point out triple City - Stones is under threat from Laporte now 100% fit.

Coady Fofana can step in but neither has anything more than a 6 pointer in them really. Actually like the Foden call but maybe not from week 1.

Held Ederson for a long time last season and don't hate that call but it is pricey on week 1 budget.

Always tempted by bighitting GK, they're pretty good value for money in the long run, also Stones jad a good score last year evem though he didn't play all games. See your point on Coady and Fofana. Better options at 4.5??

I disagree as can't see how a £6m goalkeeper will ever beat a £4.5m when it comes to ppm but each to their own...

Aren't you worried about no Robbo or Trent? They could hurt you if Liverpool reverts to being defensively sound considering their high ownership. Ederson is nailed on but you're probably going to get regular 6s and an occasional 7 not worth the extra 1.5m IMO. That money could be used to upgrade a number of your outfield players, but to each their own. Not sure about Phoden's minutes either.

I was assuming VVD was fit and ready to start GW1. With the article casting doubt on that, starting without TAA and Robbo seems less unreasonable.

Funds, man, funds. If you want him, you probably have to forfeit one of the template big-hitters of either Salah or Bruno. If you have all three then the rest of your team becomes severely weakened and you'll have to rely on mostly those three performing week in week out.

Yeah 3 big hitters is too much. What I meant is people have Bruno more than KDB & I'm not sure why, especially with the rumoured formation change

All else aside, I wouldn’t be that surprised if City scored 15-20 goals in the first five games.

I would be surprised if United scored more than 10.

Gotta go KDB for the upside?

      How fit is he?

Said something about playing the Euros with torn ligaments out of a sense of duty. Pep could well be pacing him I imagine on his return even if he is more or less nailed outside of runs to the CL final

Yes, and the fact that Grealish (if the transfer goes through) could potentially be used as cover for when KDB is injured or needs to be rested. Either way, KDB is more of a wait-and-see. Tottenham as well isn't the most appealing fixture. Actually, I had my eye on Sterling. Think he could have a good season. But if Kane goes to City, it changes everything.

I saw that KdB has the best xGI/90 of any player in the league. Yes even ahead of Kane and Salah.

He just had injuries last year and was rotated occasionally. If he's fit I might start with him as a differential.

Holding had the best points per game of any £4.5m defender last year. Might be worth seeing if he starts pre-season

I like it. I'm toying with dropping TAA, so I can do similar tbh.
There's some brave calls in there with Ings & Cavani (like both).

Only thing I'd debate is Dallas; honestly not sure if ESR is a fantasy asset but for short term could downgrade Coady to a non playing 4.0 and get one of the 6.0 options?

But probably could wait and see if you like him

Latest draft, Bissouma in a 3-5-2 when Cancelo is rotated:

    4.5

    Kane | Pukki

    Usual

I've solved it lads. Here's the winning team

    Schmeichel . Foster
TAA . Shaw . Digne. Ayling. Manquillo
    Salah . Bruno . Raphina . ESR . Bissouma
    Ihenacho . DCL . Watkins

Flip flopping between Buendia and Toney in place of ESR and Watkins. But leaning in this direction currently, unless someone changes my mind.

I prefer Buendia and Toney by a lot.

When you realise everyone else is getting the same amount of points as you then you won’t win. I’m not saying tear it up but you have no explosive big hitters. For me personally that’s what will separate you.

Don't trust Arteta with ESR myself.

Started with Schmeichel but I've migrated into the Meslier camp - more saves.

DCL could go bang bang bang of course but not keen on fixtures or his reliability at that price.

Everton would need to continue to away masters - less likely with crowds back. They have this lot away in he first five

          Leeds
          Brighton
          Villa

Doesn't look great to me. Those are perhaps the three most awkward sub top 6 defences around.

Henderson back in training for United’s preseason this week- if after preseason he looks to be United’s first choice keeper would you get him in team ahead of Sanchez or Bachmann?

I'd probably stick with Sanchez or go with Meslier. Even if Henderson starts as United's number one he isn't going to get that many saves or any bonus points. And then there's the risk of him getting rotated too.

Option is stick with 343 or move to a 352 343 Buendia, Toney, Hojbjerg on bench

You shouldn't have Steele anyway. You might want an active Brighton triple up in the form of say Sanchez, Lamptey, Welbeck or Bissouma.

At the moment and until options become clearer, the only City player I’d consider is Dias (6.0m)?

I think the same a few days ago but unfortunately I feel my team is not strong enogh when Dias is there because I hope to find some decent backup IF ONLY HE get rest.

Who knows what Pep think afterall?

I cant rely 4.5 def like Fofana or Ayling to be a backup. Doest strong enough for me. Btw, Lamptey is in my first 11.

For now, no City or Chelsea for me.

I’ve currently got Torres in my team.

I really think he will get a lot more game time after a good first season and a pretty decent showing in the euros.

      At 7 mil, I reckon he’s worth a punt…

      1. Eze Really?

My choice too and for the same reasons. A wait and see. I think Kane could affect him as his best performances were not wide but more a false 9. At 7 mil quite east to move on too.

The other forward being punted is Ings. If he joined City he would have 99% ownership overnight and 198% EO every GW!

        This.

In case Dias 6.0, other attacking 5.5 can match him too. Cresswell , Shaw same ppm as AWB even less minutes, cheaper. Same or maybe more points than Dias.

Mahrez too. Grealish if stay at Villa, Barnes when fit can smash Mahrez total points.

In case of ppm, captainable lite candidate.. when he play Mahrez is explosive even not so much better than others, but what if he doesnt play?

Rely on Fofana who doent nailed if Lei play back 4? Rely on Ayling who doest have any attacking return? Ayling Have some XGI tough but the fact is he still underarchiever like Maupay, Mount.

In Grealish's case, we're waiting to see if he stays at Villa or goes to City. Also, saving 1.5m on Buendia isn't not insignificant.

For me it’s the uncertainty of where he’ll be playing next season at the moment.

I’ll be keeping a close eye on Barnes in pre season and my may well pinch a spot in my starting XI…

    4. Thomas Magnum
      • 8 Years

In short for Grealish, transfer uncertainty, awkward price point & recency bias. As for Barnes, little of the same people won’t think all the way back to how he was pre injury and also uncertainty over where he starts and if he’s 100% fit again
