Pro Pundits - Lateriser

Are Gameweeks 4 and 7 the best time to play the first Wildcard in FPL?

The Gameweeks are coming in thick and fast and more often than not we forget to sit back and think macro.

Chelsea’s performance on Sunday was incredibly encouraging and with most Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers having no Blues assets, a few might be thinking of a Wildcard during the first international break which follows Gameweek 3.

So, I thought it might be a good time to look at the merits of a Gameweek 4 versus a Gameweek 7 Wildcard.

The idea of this article is to help you think about the factors involved, that is all. Whether you Wildcard or not obviously depends on the state of your team and I leave that decision to you.

    Bench one:
    a) Toney (avl)
    b) Cash (BRE)
    c) Ayling (bur)

What bothers me is that if Toney scores, Cash will lose points.

Who would you say is the safest pick of the Spurs defence after Reguilon (the 4.5's)

Template with Benrahma has been successful. Template with certain Harvey Barnes not so much.

Struggling with transfers. Definitely want to get DCL in which means losing 2 of Toney, Mahrez & Barnes. Feel like I'll get punished whichever way I go!

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Tsimi
    Salah Bruno Mahrez Barnes Benrahma
    Antonio Toney

    Steele Coufal Ayling Perica

    2FT, 0.0 ITB

    a) Mahrez, Toney > DCL, Raphinha, (3-5-2)
    b) Mahrez, Perica > DCL, Gilmour (3-4-3)
    c) Barnes, Toney > DCL, Gilmour (4-4-2)

Leaning towards getting rid of Mahrez though as I think 9.0m is too much to have tied up in a player who's not nailed to start.

Gives Barnes one more week against Norwich, although I'm not expecting much!

There is an option d) of Barnes, Perica to DCL, Gilmour. Means I get to keep Toney who (if he gets off the mark this week) might look a better option than Raphinha with the upcoming internationals?

He wasn't too good but same was the case with every other Leicester player. Not fair to judge their performances yesterday as they played with 10. I have him and will give him one last chance vs Norwich.

yep, I'm a Leicester fan and it was a horrible game to watch, but down to 10 men early on and with injuries to key players, it was far from a normal game for us. I think we'll bounce back against Norwich, but do have concerns still as to how many chances we'll create.

I would consider getting rid of esr for Bissouma and then you could upgrade white to someone like James or Reguilon or even Digne, all depending on what teams you think will be solid at the back. Esr would definitely be out for me as Arsenal have City, and tsmikas got a price rise which you could take advantage of

    Good article.

Hard to argue with the notion that FPL has been solved. There’s that much quality advice and so many reliable tipsters that you could probably achieve a top 100,000 finish without doing any of your own research or watching a single match.

    Not complaining, just an observation.

    1. SADIO SANÉ
      • 8 Years

the pool of players to pick from is pretty small, and not many go under the radar these days - social media has made it more luck based than it used to be imo

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 5 Years

        100%.

I’d like to see FPL alter its rule to widen the player pool and also, remove the chips to reduce the amount of luck. They won’t do it because it’s appeal is it’s simplicity.

Spending a lot of time reading advice about FPL and getting a good finish as a result isn’t an achievement. People shouldn’t be patted on the back for finishing in the top whatever. They just have more time and dedication than others that’s pretty much it.

        1. SADIO SANÉ
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 8 months ago

yeah it's a hard one - it is what it is because of it's 'who scored' and 'who got the assist' simplicity - I'm not sure you can really change that. Personally think making the price change volatility even higher and completely masking it from view would be the best way to prevent copying/templates.

    2. Dr. Rog
      • 14 Years

FPL is more about beating yourself than other players. I've lost count of the number of times I've made transfers and then realised I would've been better off doing nothing at all.

best to wildcard during an international break. on the first night bring in all the likely risers, hold for 2 weeks and flog them for your actual wildcard team at the end. you can usually make 0.2m out of it.

Must admit, I'm tempted to use an early WC too.

on the whole there is price deflation rather than inflation within the player pool (more fallers than risers). it gets easier over the season, not harder to fit the players you want in.

2FT what would you do with this lot?

      Sanchez (Steele)
      TAA - Shaw - Digne (Ayling,Tsimikas)
Salah - Bruno - Raph - Barnes (Brownhill)
      Ings - Antonio - Toney

Main issues at the minute are Digne,Barnes & Tony

But with the fixtures are they worth taking out? not so much Tony but not many better at 6.5 or less

Matthews 4.0 Fodder from Palace. Gilmour instead of Skipp maybe?

I don’t like it. Starting Bissouma and having 3x 4.0s doesn’t feel very good.

Thats a good GW2 team. I wouldn't have Amartey in a WC team, his days starting are numbered. And playing Bissouma week in week out is not a move given his return history.

Jota> Benrahma or wait a week and do Barnes > Benrahama?

Agree with this. Tsimi might get one more 60+, has best chance for CS, and can get attacking return(s).

I'd have thought it more likely Robbo starts and gets tired late on, allowing Tsimi a 1-point cameo.

How does Tsmikas have the best chance for CS when they play Chelsea? I would play Livramento out of the 3

Yeah, it's Chelsea. Robertson will start if fit.

Would be Duffy for me, don't think Newcastle away is a good fixture for a defender at all.

Maybe he will get that one pointer, but at least he has some upside (if he plays at all). Don’t see much for the other two.

            Really?

I find it curious that I'd order it entirely different to all you folks

Livra, Duffy, Tsim would be my order.

Tsim vs Chelsea in a game he probably won't start, could get a cameo, and Liverpool have been a touch lucky to get two CSs in two easy fixtures is easily last on my bench.

Duffy vs Everton is perfectly fine, but Livra has shown good attacking potential, Southampton looked much improved vs United compared to GW1 and they're playing Newcastle.

Agree on Tsimi. I don’t see a cs for either of the other two which would probably sway me towards Duffy for attacking threat over Livramento. Duffy surely edges him in that regard.

Admittedly haven’t gone back and analyzed all historic data, but from memory it’s not uncommon for matches between two big clubs to be end 0-0.
I agree Tsimi is a risk to play at all (Hence Duffy 1st bench).

Got 2FT to burn - so need to use at least one... 0.5 itb

      Sanchez
      TAA Shaw Digne Tsimikas
      Raph Bruno Salah Son
      Toney Antonio

      Gilmour White Scarlett

      1. Son & Toney -> 5.5 & Lukaku (Doucoure with his new role?)
      2. Downgrade Digne for funds (amazing fixtures though)
      3. Downgrade White (great fixtures incoming)
      4. Cash out of Tsimikas (e.g. Livramento)
      5. Other??

Anyone else got a TAA, Shaw, Ayling, Amartey & Tsimikas(Plan on trading to Livramento this GW) defence?
If so, my question is who are you planning on fielding in gw4 as your 3rd defender.

Personally, I am leaning towards a transfer of Amartey should he be displaced by Vestergaard... to who? I am undecided.

Seems he left Everton aged 16, and fans are saying he's got talent and an attitude bigger than Balotelli!
For our pruposes, presumably yet another 4m defender.

long term very good imo, if it wasn't for potential internationals issues it would be a no brainer
