Cristiano Ronaldo and the best time to play the first Wildcard in FPL

It’s been a whirlwind start to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, with the transfer window mirroring the frenzy that we have seen on the pitch.

So, with that in mind, in this article, I will be sharing my thoughts on what we have seen so far and what lies ahead.

THE RONALDO QUESTION

I can’t start this article without addressing the arrival of one of the greatest players to have ever graced the football pitch – Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m).

There have been some concerns that the Portuguese powers might be waning but as the table below shows, he has maintained his consistency despite the fact that he turns 37 in February 2022.

31454112

Portugal play three games over the international break of which two are World Cup qualifiers.

The first of those happened last night – a 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland which saw Ronaldo bag a brace of goals and become the all-time international record goalscorer.

However, he also picked up a late booking, which means that he is suspended and does not need to travel to Azerbaijan for Portugal’s second World Cup qualifier, which is due to take place on Tuesday. As a consequence, he has been released early from international duty.

So, I have full confidence that Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer will start Ronaldo in front of a packed Old Trafford in Gameweek 4.

Some have pointed out how Lionel Messi was eased off the bench in his first game at Paris Saint-Germain but Ronaldo’s case is very different. For Messi, it was the first transfer of his career, while Ronaldo is ‘returning home’ and Solsjkaer, in my opinion, is not a manager who is too stringent about players ‘adapting’ to his system. So, who makes way to accommodate Ronaldo in our FPL sides?

So, good luck and enjoy the international break.

We will be discussing Wildcard picks for those of you who have already pushed the button on the Gameweek 4 pod of The FPL Wire.

If I play my WC would it cancel out my -4 hit I've already taken?

I'm now thinking of building my team around Ronaldo

Hi all, would you take that -8? No rush to do it, can wait down to the deadline

    Bruno + Mahrez + Ings + Obafemi > Ronaldo + DCL + Jota + Sissoko + £0.7itb

      Ings to Dom is fine

Bruno to Ronaldo for -8pts, who knows!

Current Wildcard. Thoughts? .6 ITB still

    Sanchez
    TAA-Semedo-Shaw
    Salah-Torres-Jota-Sarr
    CR7-Antonio-Jimenez

    Gunn-Livra-Williams-Gilmour

Gives me the flexibility of Shaw>Reece James or Chilly in a week or two, then make a decision on Lukaku GW7. Can also move Sarr onto Raph if need be

On WC here, man it is hard to squeeze in everyone!

    Lloris (Steer)
TAA - Dier - Duffy (Livramento - Williams)
Salah - Torres - Benrahma - Bissouma (Allen)
    Antonio - Lukaku - Ronaldo

If that can hold for a week or 2 then I can downgrade Lloris and upgrade defense - should I wait or do that now?

Don't like having to play one of Bissouma or Livra every week with Torres rotation risk lurking. Front 3 are obviously very strong though.

    Trent, White, Saiss, Williams

    Son, Salah, Benhrama

    DCL, Antonio, Ronaldo

    Subs: Romeu, Brownhill, Livramento

    Thoughts?

What would you do with this? 0itb and 0FT

    Sanchez Steele
    TAA Shaw White Amartey Livramento
    Salah Bruno Raphinha Jota Gilmour
    Antonio Bamford Jiminez.

I am scared about not owning Ronnie, but don't want to ditch any of my front 3 due to form and long term fixtures, so I think I will go without.

So it's a question then about what to do with Bruno. Stick for Newcastle and then ditch for who? Son? Sarr? Benrhama?
    And save the money?

Just pick one. I had McCarthy and Martinez from day 1 last year and ended up benching Martinez points. That 0.5 is much better used for defenders.

So the article is arguing don't WC for a few players, take a -8 BUT WC in gw7 to get triple Chelsea (instead of a -4/-8)?
Does that really make sense? People are sleeping on 3x Wolves + Ronaldo/ Jota transfers right now, as the benefit of the WC.

That's a good point actually. I guess the only reason not to WC right now that I can think of is the fact that I still don't know what I want to do with Raphina & Benrahma. Feel like I will have a better idea in 7.

I am of the opinion though that you can make an excellent WC team right now, and still have the flexibility to swap to Chelsea in GW7 without taking a hit.

I played my wildcard last week and left 6.3M in the bank to cater for transfers. I've calculated that I need one 4-point hit to get exactly the squad I want, together with 3 Chelsea players come GW7, and a series of 1FT per week for a few weeks after that to catch fixtures changes. Granted, injuries and unforeseen circumstances will cause me to tweak my plan, but with careful planning, I do believe you can wildcard now and still retain a perfectly decent squad going forward.

The conventional wisdom seems to have really reversed from last year, hasn't it? Last year it was most definitely on the side of, "don't take a -8 before your first WC, just play WC if your team is that bad."

Maybe it has changed for a reason though, since there were so many late deadline-day transfers representing players we haven't even seen play for their new teams.

I'll never do triple Wolves after a calamitous GW early last season against West Ham with goals conceded, own goal by my captain, etc.

Unless you have a lot of fires to put out, I personally think its crazy to take a -8 or WC just to bring in Ronaldo for Bruno. Sure if you have a couple FT then by all means, but I think some people are jumping the gun here, that move could wait another week.

    Bruno + Toney + Cash
    to

      C. Alonso will be dropped imminently.
As to whether its worth 8 points, thats debatable and contingent on how good your bench is to cover cash.

    Sanchez

    Sanchez
    TAA, Shaw, Reguilon
    Salah, Fernandes, Greenwood, Raphinha, Benrahma

    Steele; White, Tsimikas, Perica.

This is United's fixture list up until the next international break:

    9/11 - Newcastle (H) - PL
    9/14 - Young Boys (A) - CL
    9/19 - West Ham (A) - PL
    9/22 - West Ham (H) - CC
    9/25 - Aston Villa (H) - PL
    9/29 - Villarreal (H) - CL

Perhaps the best thing to do this week is absolutely nothing. Plenty of -4 and -8s being banded around to fix perfectly good squads, and the best captain remains Salah in any case. Essentially a win by default.

I think a big part of it is Twitter and YouTube FPL accounts. So many are saying Ronaldo will 100% start against Newcastle and takes pennies. He may very well do but we still don’t know this.

My two best seasons have been when I played this way, only making a move when absolutely necessary, otherwise trusting my picks will come good because of the reasons I originally chose them.

I'm trying to stick to that strategy again this season.

Instead of using my 2FTs to swap Ronaldo for Bruno I could just use them to upgrade Ings to DCL and Tsimikas to a playing defender.

Who would be your wolves defender of choice? Will be replacing Tsimikas as part of a -8, but planning on doing the first two today before Tsimikas drops:

hmm, I intially thought that but doesn't Saiss have more potential getting on the end of corners etc? was only kept out at the weekend by a De Gea wonder save but i must admit i've not watched much of wolves this season

Any sense in Trincao over Traore?

      I'd go Traore.

That's actually the way I would go. Stats or not Traore is awful. Somebody said he has 7 goals in 181 games. Hardly inspiring is it.

Yeah I think I'm leaning that way, he's certainly in my WC draft atm...

Both are punt tbh. Trincao falls in unknown territory whereas we are aware of Traore's finishing.

Sarr could be better than both.

Agree with this. I prefer Sarr to both.

Absolutely. Traore is all flash and no end product

Help please. I'm on a WC now, already made a few moves and currently have:
    Sanchez, Steel
    TAA, Shaw, Coufal, Livramento, Williams
    Salah, Jota, Benrahma, Raphinha, Gilmour
    Lukaku, DCL, Antonio

I'm thinking I should get CR7 in now then likely drop for Lukaku later. To do that would these changes make sense?
Lukaku to CR7, Coufal to Ayling, Shaw to Saiss.
    Thanks for any advice!

How’s this WC team. Wait and see on ronaldo

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Christensen (ayling, livramento)
    Salah Jota Benrahma Torres Greenwood
    Antonio Lukaku (c)

To get ronaldo probably Lukaku and Greenwood to ronaldo and raphinha

Don’t get the Lukaku pick over Ronaldo. Have Lukaku for the bad fixtures but not Ronaldo with the good.

Home debut against villa with no Martinez. Then Spurs who’ve been lucky to keep CS. Yes city is hard

Will ronaldo even start vs Newcastle? Doubt it. Plus they need to change the way they play to get the best out of him

Thoughts on the most top heavy team in existence?
Not as bad as I was expecting...

    Sanchez (Steele)
    James Shaw Semedo (Livramento Williams)
    Greenwood Torres Benramha Sarr (Brownhill)
    Ronaldo Kane Lukaku

Just playing around, haven't triggered WC yet but would it be so bad doing the following?

    Sanchez
    Cancelo / Coady / Ayling / Duffy / Livra
    Salah / Torres / Raph / Sarr / Bissouma
    Ronaldo / Lukaku / Antonio

The only other player I really wanted was Son

On the Beeb they're spouting that FIFA will "probably"be laying down the 5 day ban and Jiminez will be absent if that'ts the case.
Will wait on that news first.
