The best FPL forwards to consider as Calvert-Lewin and Antonio replacements

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) set for a spell on the sidelines and a ban ruling Michail Antonio (£7.9m) out of Gameweek 5, many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are unexpectedly in the market for a new forward.

At the time of writing, the pair are the two most-sold forwards in FPL, but should we be selling them, and if so, who are the best replacements?

In this, our latest Fantasy Football Scout Members article, we’ll attempt to answer those questions.

This whole xG thing seems to me like a load of bull. Some players can score and some just can't. I'd take Gray over Traore any day of the week.

Respectfully disagree, it's a proven KPI that football clubs all over Europe use as a tool for recruitment.
Admittedly it's not perfect & needs to be combined with the eye test & other stats but nonetheless it's not a load of bull.

Agreed. But as you said, one must include other stats and actual gameplay into consideration and not just look at xG.

Not that many people have had the experience of owning him.

The ability to learn from seeing others' mistakes, rather than having to make them yourself, is sadly too rare in life.

Exactly this for me. I wanted to do Shaw to James in GW7, but had to WC this week, so makes sense to do that swap now.

I have a plan to bring in a Chelsea defender anyway, but I'm losing faith in United's ability to get clean sheets. Assists are no compensation if defenders can't do their bread and butter job.

Anyone thinking of getting Cresswell at 5.5 instead of getting the mid-priced Mids from West Ham? I think he will get more points than the likes of Benny and Donna's, proven from previous seasons and also similar returns this season as well, that too with less cash.

    Greenwood or Jota?

Hard to choose between them. (I currently have both). I’ve had Greenwood since the start and his consistently returned.
I also think that Firmino will be back before Rashford.
Jota probably has the better short term fixtures. Greenwood fresh for the weekend.
I will stick with Greenwood until Rashford is back.

Greenwood. He should get more minutes overall as a place up front is his to lose right now whereas Jota is second choice to Firminho. Greenwood can also play in two positions, whereas Jota is only really used in the one.

Don't forget that Liverpool do occasionally go 4-2-3-1 playing all 4 of the lads up front.

I think its a tough call, there is something to be said for players having high confidence and being in form. Plus Greenwood has always been a deadly finisher.

But the same people that will tell you Gray is over achieving will somehow tell you Greenwood isn't.

            Personally I'd back Jota.

Fixtures, and he is SURELY due a good run now.

The other thing is the options below him aren't tempting and really then it's all the way down to Scarlett and the 4.5ms which means I have 13 players (Steer)

Depends on your bench whose coming in for DCL. If Livramento (city) or Duffy (LEI) then your sub may only get 1 or 2 points.

Both Wolves & Leeds fixtures are good for a while.

Benrahma early sub, Man U next, Europa, Rotation risk with new signing makes me consider selling this week.

Nervous about Jimenez, guessing you can't afford Bamford?

I look at hits over more than just 1GW, so I'd say yes.

      1. masterkyzz
        • 3 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

I can afford Bamford but weary of the Leeds double up and the rumours regarding his niggle.

I’ve already got Antonio who will be benched in place of White this week, which leaves Allan and Livramento on the bench.

I could just go DCL > Bam/Jim and hope Benrahma comes good..

    5. Carefree Crew
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

If you can wait for confirmation Bamford is fit, I prefer him to Jimenez personally.
Raphina versus Newcastle is a great entry fixture & with Benrahma issues highlighted, versus Raphina being nailed you could get 4 points back in the first week.
Not sure I'd be expecting much from your sub options, so it mitigates the risk this week.
I'm happy to take a hit if I think it has merit. Also keeps your free transfer available next week instead of booking in one of the above. Good luck either way mate. 🙂

  13. Clintymints
    • 14 Years

Pull the trigger now and sell DCL for Lukaku and get Mendy (4.4) in for Allan?

    or

Wait and see if Brownhill drops tonight and use him instead of Mendy as a playing 4.4?

Only one sub atm, but .1 short of the move. Could be nice if Brownhill drops, but DCL is close tonight and might drop ruining it all

I don't know of any striker that is likely to get any points. Started with Perica and now he is not in the game so can't drop 🙂

    How about this:

    Sanchez, Steele
    TAA, Shaw, Coady, Livramento, Amartey
    Salah, Pogba, Gallacher, Gray, Bissouma
    Ronaldo, Lukaku, Pukki

      Not too bad.

Personally Prefer extra defender over 3x 5-6m attackers.

You have 3 attackers in the 5-6m range

          Pukki
          Gallagher
          Gray

I prefer losing one and going to a 5.5 defender for flexibility

    Sanchez, (Steele)
    TAA, Shaw, White, (Duffy, Livramento)
    Salah, Jota, Raphina, Benrahma, (Brownhill)
    Ronaldo, Lukaku, Dennis

I'd need to take a minus 8 to get to this team. Exact cash.

    OUT: Coufal, DCL, Antonio.

    IN: White, Lukaku, Dennis

I was planning to wild card GW8, however I'm thinking I could potentially navigate the fixture swing with free transfers & the odd hit & save my wildcard.

I was going to stick with 2 premiums, but what are your thoughts to this 3 premiums team still playing 3,4,3?

    1. Hinchcliffe Thumper

-8 hit is quite a hit for that move.

I hear you but Livramento (city) Duffy (LEIC) Brownhill (ARSE) are likely 1-2 points if I have to play them.

With Antonio & DCL unavailable I'd have to play 2 of them.

Coufal has Man U & Leeds, I don't see a clean sheet in either, so he could be 3-4 points over 2 fixtures.

8 points doesn't seem like that much to claw back, Watford next 3 is against poor defences, so I was considering the punt.

On WC and as much as I like seeing Lukaku and Ronaldo up front, I feel as if Bamford (if fit) with those fixtures plus the 4.6 saving to distribute elsewhere could be better.

    Team currently: 0.6itb

    Sa
    TAA - Rudiger - Tierney - Marcal
    Salah - Gwood - Raph - Gray
    Lukaku - Bamford

    Bench: 4.0, Antonio, Livra, Mcarthur

Thinking when Antonio is back will be benching one of Tierney, Marcal or gray to play each week fixture depending. Any thoughts appreciated, thanks.

Agree, all the triple premium squads look so thin in midfield to me. The 7-8m midfielders are priced that way for a reason and the 5-6.5m guys won't keep up with them in the long run with the exception of maybe raphinha

I need to replace DCL- which looks best:

    A) Bamford and Sarr
    B) Jimenez and Raphina

I’ve got the biggest hunch to go for an Arsenal player this week.
Either Ayling > Gabriel or Benrahma > Saka/ESR.

Not sure if it’s smart but I got the vibe.

    Talk me into/out of it?!

    1. Gabbiadini
      • 6 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

what's the 0.6 difference between Gabriel and White, the latter could even drop to 4.3.
Saka is not a bad selection, ESR has too much rotation risk.

      1. RogDog_jimmy
        • 3 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

I trust Gabriel more for baps and goal threat. But maybe White/Tomiyasu are better value options. 4.3 White would seem too good a deal to not take.

ESR being so cheap makes him less of a gamble but I do prefer Saka.
