So…is 12 points enough? That’s the question the majority of Fantasy managers are asking themselves after Cristiano Ronaldo notched the only goal of the game this evening to earn Portugal a place in the semi-finals at the expense of Czech Republic.

It’s on to tomorrow now, with Germany the red-hot favourites to see off Greece and join Paulo Bento’s side in the semi-finals, where they will face either England or Italy. We’ve rolled out the Captain Poll and, with Fantasy managers now swithering whether to stick or twist, there are a host of options available amongst the Group B winners’ first XI.

Mario Gomez looks the stand-out contender for Joachim Low’s side. The Bayern Munich forward is the only German to have picked up attacking returns in all three of his appearances, with a couple of goals and an assist to his name thus far. Mesut Ozil’s role in “the hole” has created chance aplenty but to date, he’s picked up just a single assist thus far – will tomorrow finally deliver the display his manager reckons is imminent?

Elsewhere amongst the German side, Bastian Schweinsteiger is second only to Gomez for points accrued; a couple of assists and two extra points for recovered balls has helped him to a 15 point haul. Lukas Podolski opened his account against Denmark in Germany’s final group game and will be looking to maintain his upturn in form, while Thomas Muller looks a real differential candidate – the Bayern man has yet to pick up any attacking points and resultantly has less than 6% ownership but, as his displays at the 2010 World Cup confirmed, he’s more than capable of producing for the national side.

It’s little wonder Greece are rank outsiders. Fernando Santos’ side are devoid of their skipper and playmaker Giorgos Karagounis due to suspension, while none of their forwards have returned more than nine points in the McDonald’s game to date. Having failed to score more than a single goal in any of their Group A matches, their chances of breaching the favourites’ backline more than once looks unlikely. Dimitrios Salpingidis and Theofanis Gekas have grabbed a goal apiece along with the banned Karagounis – the aforementioned forward duo should carry the threat tomorrow evening then, along with Giorgos Samaras.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Gotcha, useful knowledge. Thornton Heath = Croydon = CR?

Has to be CR7, Cristiano Ronaldo!

I have to say, that is one of the best pub quiz-like questions I have ever heard.

I confess I got to it through Wikipedia - Ronaldo's page has a "CR7 redirects here CR7(disambiguation)" link.

I think we should establish this as his new nickname.

          Thornton Heath, stick or twist?!

cr7 is expensive though and i can see him going scoreless vs spain. guess i'll have to wait and see who progresses.

no need to do pilar to a 4.0 greek mid though is there? cuz doing that would give me more funds but then i'd only have 10 playing players...

I will have 6-GER, 4-ESP, 1-POR for the semis. I can switch out the spanish or portugese accordingly, but am pretty committed on the Germans.

There's actually no other way to go. If you had 3-GER, 3-ESP, 3-ITA, 2-POR even split no matter what happens 4 subs will not be enough to make a full team...

Actually probably Moutinho. I'm looking at dropping Ronaldo to spread my funds more. I am more or less predicting Spain to progress, but am keeping one Portugese as a safety net so that I only need to trade out 4 Spanish if they happen to lose.

He worked so hard today, defending and attacking the flank hard before trying to instigate attacking matters through the middle; earlier in the tournament (albeit in the mauling by the hands of Russia) played a holding role as well. He looks a strong 7th-10th Prem team player so yeah Liverpool should maybe get him 😉

So in the semis is everyone else going to go for a 3-4-3 with the bench filled with 4m players who are out?

Also, as far as the gk and defence goes, one player from each semi finalist?

This is assuming Spain and Germany progress of course.

Depends what you're playing for. You'll never come top of anything significant without at least backing one of the finalists 80%, but as ever you'll get a more consistent placing by spreading the risks.

Here's an observation about whether or not to load up on one or two teams:

Because you have 15 players, in an ideal world you could go into the semifinals with an even split among the 4 remaining teams (4-4-4-3). Then regardless of who went through you could use your 4 free transfers to bring your team up to 11 or even 12 players for the final game. This is probably what the game creators were thinking when they came up with 4 transfers.

But since the obvious happened and most of the favoured teams have gone forward in the competition, having a 15 player squad in the Semi's is unrealistic due to the cost. Furthermore all the cheap options will probably be eliminated by the next round, so in fact you HAVE to start buying your 4.0 fillers now!

The end result is that if you want an even split in the Semi's it will have to be 3-3-3-2 with four unplayables on the sideline. And from those numers no matter which teams win, after completing your transfers you will go into the final a man or two down.

So in the question of whether or not to load up, the answer is 'you have no choice'. You need to A) pick a winner B) run a larger but more economical squad C) play a wildcard or D) end up with not enough men.

No, but you said all the cheap options will be eliminated by next round (I assume you mean the semis) and to buy fillers now ( I assume you meant you needed them for the QFs) and I don't have any fillers unless you count abate as a filler. So I'm slightly screwed according to your post

Well not an ideal position. But it would probably be worse if you realised this in 4 days time. It might pay for you to buy some 4.0 greeks before they are eliminated in 23 hours time. And you might have to commit yourself even more to whoever you favour to be in the final, which will mean if you're right then no problems.

Whats your team out of interest?

      Yep this entirely correct.

You have to have 4.0 squad fillers now, and it also helps to have a basic formation in mind too so you know which ones to get.

I have two 4.0 mids already, so I'm all set there. My last one is a striker slot which is going to Oliveira. Defense is where it's at!

Portugal were completely dominated by the Czechs. Ronaldo was crap and his goal was extremely lucky. He ran into the box, the ball deflected off the back of his head (which was an accident, he couldn't even see it), hit a dodgy blade of grass and threw Czech off the trajectory of the ball.

I had the three Portugese defenders, but ended up swapping Boateng and Iniesta for Jordi Alba and Ozil, mainly because of the slight doubt about Boateng's starting place - although I do expect him to play.

I have 2 German defenders but it would still be funny if Greece score after considering all those who have 4 German defenders

Does anyone have 4 Germans?! If they do, I think the joke will probably be on them when Ozil and Gomez tear it up.

And if they don't you'll be cowering away from the abuse you'll get on here. I also have Ozil but it's a big risk considering his price and lack of points scored so far

I'm worried that Lahm will do something big this week. Would be very annoying having the three cheapest German defenders, and then Lahm outscoring them all comfortably.

LOL. Yeah that just about sums it up for us so far. We've lucked out. We had the lowest cumulative score in our entire group, but now is the quarters and it's a whole different ball game!

In a way. But it's also a little irritating when a forward who scores twice *only* gets 4 more points than a forward who scores once. If that makes sense.....

Bonus points just give more points to players who already have points which means FPL is then mostly about guessing who will score

why? its nice to know ur score and not be stuck waiting on them. and i dont like the way they are administered either.... i dont think a shot that is an inch over the goal should count against you. and i think theres too much focus on goal scorers.

Some of you are obviously fidgeting in your seats in regards to the budget for semis and the final.

Alternatively: how about a 14 man squad of "lesser" players instead? I.e. Khedira over Schweinsteiger?

i think at most you'd want a 12 man squad for the semis. no more tahn 11 is needed for the finals as you cant make any subs or captain changes

if you are going for the likes of iniesta and gomez and alba and neuer i dont see why they wouldn't feature... and khedira and/or busquets will probably be necessary anyways to allow for 11 players that will play

I think there should be a wider variety of ways to score points than just scoring and assisting which is what FPL is mostly about. For example, players could get some points for completing a certain number of passes/crosses

Pass leading to non-goal shot on/off target

not quite sure about the wording, but not harder than counting assists or the shots themselves

yeah. or the assist of the assist if important. like cesc i think it was who chipped it over for iniesta who passed to navas, i feel like he should get some credit for that goal.

also there is recovered balls and save points but there should be points for key stops
like if a gk saves a 1v1 or a defender comes out of nowhere to block a shot in the box or clears the ball of the line or somethinig

you'd just have to word the rules correctly. but i think that is very important. or say the person that hits a throughball to the guy on the wing who then sends a low cross across the box for the forward to tap in, it was the through ball that was crucial and even allowed the chance to happen

It would still cause arguments though. For example if in the situation you described, the winger took on a player or two, does the guy who passed it to the winger still get credit?

the assists rule causes arguments too so i dont see how it would make any difference. i actually think there would be less controversial assist of assists than actual assists (think rooney)

    Thinking ahead for the semifinals...

Is 3-4-3 a better combination or 4-3-3 a better one...

First one will mean that I will need to have 2 4.0m defenders and Second one will mean that I will need to have 2 4.0m midfielders...
