So…is 12 points enough? That’s the question the majority of Fantasy managers are asking themselves after Cristiano Ronaldo notched the only goal of the game this evening to earn Portugal a place in the semi-finals at the expense of Czech Republic.

It’s on to tomorrow now, with Germany the red-hot favourites to see off Greece and join Paulo Bento’s side in the semi-finals, where they will face either England or Italy. We’ve rolled out the Captain Poll and, with Fantasy managers now swithering whether to stick or twist, there are a host of options available amongst the Group B winners’ first XI.

Mario Gomez looks the stand-out contender for Joachim Low’s side. The Bayern Munich forward is the only German to have picked up attacking returns in all three of his appearances, with a couple of goals and an assist to his name thus far. Mesut Ozil’s role in “the hole” has created chance aplenty but to date, he’s picked up just a single assist thus far – will tomorrow finally deliver the display his manager reckons is imminent?

Elsewhere amongst the German side, Bastian Schweinsteiger is second only to Gomez for points accrued; a couple of assists and two extra points for recovered balls has helped him to a 15 point haul. Lukas Podolski opened his account against Denmark in Germany’s final group game and will be looking to maintain his upturn in form, while Thomas Muller looks a real differential candidate – the Bayern man has yet to pick up any attacking points and resultantly has less than 6% ownership but, as his displays at the 2010 World Cup confirmed, he’s more than capable of producing for the national side.

It’s little wonder Greece are rank outsiders. Fernando Santos’ side are devoid of their skipper and playmaker Giorgos Karagounis due to suspension, while none of their forwards have returned more than nine points in the McDonald’s game to date. Having failed to score more than a single goal in any of their Group A matches, their chances of breaching the favourites’ backline more than once looks unlikely. Dimitrios Salpingidis and Theofanis Gekas have grabbed a goal apiece along with the banned Karagounis – the aforementioned forward duo should carry the threat tomorrow evening then, along with Giorgos Samaras.

for a) it would be 3-4-3 and for b) it would be 4-3-3 and then you need to ask yourself whether you see any SF team having a cleansheet... If yes go for b) and then load your defense with that team...

You'll find it's difficult to fill out a squad if it's a Spain - Germany final if you have a full roster of strikers, plus they don't get clean sheet or recovered balls points.

Defenders are awesome as the game goes on. They are consistent returners, with RB points potential, and an added +4 tacked on if they get a cleanie.

Of the mids and forwards, you're looking at around 2 per team, one mid, one striker who will deliver the bulk of the points.

            Ozil + Gomez
            Iniesta + Silva/Torres
            Ronaldo + Moutinho

            etc...

Find a way to fit those guys all in, and you have as good a team as they come.

but you will need the 3 strikers? as i assume they will tend to score less, as the matches become more tight

I have a 4-3-3 formation currently with one defender, one goalkeeper and 2 midfielders.

Should i waste my transfers reshuffling that formation or just get the players of my choice in the formation i want?

Doesn't sound exactly right from the match report I read. Sounds like the czech's played well and portugal got lucky. What was your view of the game (from a non fantasy perspective!)

I see that limbersky got 11 recovered balls! Pity about his yellow card!

Even from a non-fantasy perspective, it was totally one-sided.

          http://www.zonalmarking.net/2012/06/21/portugal-1-0-czech-republic-ronaldo-tactics/

Portugal were the better team by far. Czechs couldn't get out of their own half, and just sat deep. Midfield triangles from Portugal were great, nice width and plenty of crosses into the right areas. Lots of chances created. The only thing they lacked was good finishing.

He did us proud too. 3 points, a clean sheet after being subbed off at 61 minutes. As good as Pilar and Jiracek!

First half Czech started well. Man marking CR7 & Nani, limiting Portugals attacks and getting forward themselves. They never really got through the Portugal back 4 to threaten properly though.

Second half was all Portugal. They moved the ball quickly and used movement to lose the man markers. The game was played in the Czech half with Portugal in possession. Determined defending limited the chances but Portugal kept probing and finding them and deserved the goal.

Seriously FFS team. Just put both of the likely starting 11s in the captain poll. Defenders are good captain options too!

Periera was my top scorer last game, and I had CR7.

Do I stick on 6(12) or twist the band to Gomez?

Sorry if I missed all of the discussion about this earlier. Just got home from a baseball game(No comments, please). Are most people sticking or twisting on CR7? I've got Neuer, Hummels, Badstuber and Gomez tomorrow, and just have to believe that a couple of these guys will score more than 6.

If you are changing from CR7 / 6 point haul then you're looking for goals and assists and need to go for an attacking player. If you haven't got a good score in yet then a defender is a good safe option.

I think it depends on who you have beyond Gomez. My captain options are getting progressively worse (Iniesta, Gerrard/Pirlo) after tomorrow. So the question for me really is, can Gomez do the job? I mean, this is the Greeks. I fear that the game's got 1-0 with a 84th minute Podolski goal written all over it. So I might just stick, but I'll be in the minority.

After Gomez, I have Torres, Alba, Busquets, Gerrard, Pirlo. If the game goes 1 - 0 as you predict, then either Badstuber or Hummels will get 6 for sure and possibly a 7th with RB points

To me, the risk you're taking is not worth the potential extra 2 pts. Recovered balls are tricky. Today, Pereira barely got 5, and the Greeks will be even more withdrawn than the Czechs were. Possible yellow cards. Not to mention a jammy Greek goal...

If Torres starts, he'd be a great option, so you'd have another good chance to score big if the first switch doesn't work out.

Im twisting to put it on Lahm - Lahm is odds on a cleanie as much as Gomez is on a goal + RBs - with the oddball assist, it just may pay off - Not to mention I dont have Gomez as I went with Neur and 3 German Defenders.

It doesnt matter - I tried this the last day of group games. bring in 4.0 players for everyone you are considering replacing and have them already up in transfer page. Just remember what position the original players were in. When you get home after the game, just leave the 4.0 for whoever you want, and undo the other ones. Click make transfers and confirm and it will go through. The players dissappear on the list, but if you already have them up on the grid, they will pass through.

Its dangerous for a couple reasons. I dont see the first game having any cleanies and can actually be a high scoring game. 2) the only real possible cleanie in my eyes is Germany, in which case it will cost you, especially if want to have Gomez/ Ozil etc. 3) you will want funds for the final - so if you dont put in 2 4.0 defenders now - you may get stuck short on funds. Everyone is saying to go defenders because of RB,s, etc, but forget that players like busquets and Diarra will get RB poins as well and still have the chance for assists goals(although rare). When cleanies look unlikely, these players are better cheaper fillers than defenders that can continuously lose points.

    Day 2: Ozil/Gomez
    Day 3: Iniesta
    Day 4: Lescott

If i'm twisting, it will more likely be for Ozil.
    Am i crazy?

I would have twisted too with those options but my MD3 and MD4 options are just not enticing.

I am thinking about sticking too but Gomez can so easily go there and score a hat-trick

Again, i am going to be asking this question. Do we waste our transfers re-shuffling that back four or do we use them now to get the formation of our choice? Is there a spot on most favored formation even?

This is what i am thinking at the moment.

    Current team

    Patricio 4M
    Hummels Lescott Badstuber Coentrao 4M
    4M 4M Iniesta Ozil Cabaye
    Gomez CR7 RON

i can probably downgrade my least favored defender (Probably lescott in this case vs Germany) and use a 4M defender there to keep my formation options open. Or is this simply just a waste of a transfer?

          Personally, I would hang on.

Nothing wrong with playing 4-4-3 if they are players you are comfortable with in defence.

Me, I always go more attacking.

Its just that midfielders are a tad more expensive vs the defenders. Could you manage that formation in a tight budget?

I'd rather have 1-2m less for the final XI, to be able to have a 13 man squad for the semis (i.e. two manager subs).

Don't mean to alarm people, but Marcus Bark, a reporter from the German main TV channel ARD who is in Gdansk with the national squad, has just predicted that Miroslav Klose will start this evening instead of Gomez.

    https://twitter.com/Reporter_vorOrt/status/216047251053748224

The German tabloid Bild is also reporting this morning that Klose and Gomez were tried in different formations in a private training session yesterday, and that Löw won't decide between the pair until today.

Marcus Bark has just qualified his comments by saying that he has "no evidence" (!) that Klose will play instead of Gomez, but believes that Miroslav's mobility and ability to link up with the wide players makes him the stronger of the two candidates against the Greek defence.

Löw hasn't decided yet on his line-up, it seems.

I suppose it depends on where you're sitting in your ML's e.t.c

If you're chasing the leader then twist, but if you're sitting pretty at the top then stick.

I unfortunately am chasing the lead, so will be twisting 🙂

Morning, Ive decided to twist on 7RC , I'm slightly contemplating the hummer over super mario,
It'll either be a late 1-0, or a 4-0 stroll for the jerries,
Saying that I'm disappointingly 54 in the bug league and it's only pride from here so it's super mario for me !

At least with it being a friday, I should be up long enough so I can see the teams tonight so decide whether to captain gomez or not. I think that 3 defenders is enough backing for the german defence without captaining one, so if gomez doesn't start, I think I will stick with ronaldo, then decide about iniesta or silva tomorrow.
