So…is 12 points enough? That’s the question the majority of Fantasy managers are asking themselves after Cristiano Ronaldo notched the only goal of the game this evening to earn Portugal a place in the semi-finals at the expense of Czech Republic.

It’s on to tomorrow now, with Germany the red-hot favourites to see off Greece and join Paulo Bento’s side in the semi-finals, where they will face either England or Italy. We’ve rolled out the Captain Poll and, with Fantasy managers now swithering whether to stick or twist, there are a host of options available amongst the Group B winners’ first XI.

Mario Gomez looks the stand-out contender for Joachim Low’s side. The Bayern Munich forward is the only German to have picked up attacking returns in all three of his appearances, with a couple of goals and an assist to his name thus far. Mesut Ozil’s role in “the hole” has created chance aplenty but to date, he’s picked up just a single assist thus far – will tomorrow finally deliver the display his manager reckons is imminent?

Elsewhere amongst the German side, Bastian Schweinsteiger is second only to Gomez for points accrued; a couple of assists and two extra points for recovered balls has helped him to a 15 point haul. Lukas Podolski opened his account against Denmark in Germany’s final group game and will be looking to maintain his upturn in form, while Thomas Muller looks a real differential candidate – the Bayern man has yet to pick up any attacking points and resultantly has less than 6% ownership but, as his displays at the 2010 World Cup confirmed, he’s more than capable of producing for the national side.

It’s little wonder Greece are rank outsiders. Fernando Santos’ side are devoid of their skipper and playmaker Giorgos Karagounis due to suspension, while none of their forwards have returned more than nine points in the McDonald’s game to date. Having failed to score more than a single goal in any of their Group A matches, their chances of breaching the favourites’ backline more than once looks unlikely. Dimitrios Salpingidis and Theofanis Gekas have grabbed a goal apiece along with the banned Karagounis – the aforementioned forward duo should carry the threat tomorrow evening then, along with Giorgos Samaras.

I know these questions are getting boring now but...
Rank is 47 (2nd in Greece)
Should I stick with ronaldo or twist to Gomez, Ozil, muller
Other captain choices are iniesta and pirlo or lescott

My realistic aim is to be top in Greece. The current leader is 8 points ahead of me and has ronaldo, Gomez and Ozil. Any comments appreciated

Theo Gebre Selassie's agent has just confirmed that he's now completed his move to Werder Bremen. Four-year contract, transfer fee believed to be only €1.5 million. So he didn't waste much time finalising the deal after the Czech Republic's exit last night.

Yes, terms had been agreed between club and player just before the competition started. Werder Bremen were getting increasingly nervous as the tournament went on, as it was clear what a good player Gebre Selassie was (going forward, at least), and so were in a hurry to conclude the deal in case other clubs showed an interest.

Morning guys. Could I ask one of the regulars - Forca, 4Vets, Pratik, Daniel etc - if you see Menly on here later, can you let him know I'm off on holiday until Monday?

I will be checking in from time to time on my netbook whenever I get a wifi signal, but it means I will be on here even less regularly than usual. Not that our paths cross that often as it is 😉

Got lost on the previous page at the bottom.

I was just thinking about the semi-final scenario and working out the best possible formation.
The two formations i am really contemplating are 4-3-3 or 3-4-3
Now this is my current line-up
    Patricio 4M
    Hummels Badstuber Coentrao Lescott 4M
    Ozil Iniesta Cabaye 4M 4M
    CR7 Gomez Nani
If you are looking at 11 players for the semis, the average player cost is (105 – 16) = 8.09 M. We shall round that off to 8M.
Most teams will have atleast 2 of Gomez CR7 Silva Rooney (depending on who goes through) so that is 22M + 8.5 (torres/nani/Welbeck) = 30M invested in strikers
16 M invested on the bench.
That gives you 59 M to play with for 8 players taking the average cost to 7.38 M per player
    Now for the formations.
    1) 4 – 3 – 3
4 Defenders out of which you will look at atleast 1 German if not 2 if you are me which means 14M and complete the other 2 defenders in an 11.5M budget. 25.5M invested in defenders leaving me with 33.5 M affording me to take take two 3 big-hitting midfielders and possibly upgrade one defender or forward or keeper.
    2) 4 – 3 – 3 + sub
This is also possible if you go with the same defense, go with 2 big hitting midfielders and 2 squad fillers/impact subs/Defensive midfielders. Gives you the option of one back up in case one of the managers goes crazy.
    3) 3 – 4 – 3
    Here you should look at atleast 1 german + (spanish/portuegese) + (Ita/Eng) or 2 German + 1 defender
    Average costing works out to 7 + 6.5 + 5.6 = 19M
Giving you 40M affording you 4 good midfielders easy
Or you can have 5 Midfielders at 8M a midfielder where you can have a back up on the bench.

So to sum things up, realistically you can look at 11-12 players but not more than that. I would recommend having atleast 3players costing 4M in your squad at the moment. The formation you choose really depends on what you think will happen in the semis but you can definitely judge on the basis of what you can afford with the numbers i have provided.
This is just a small thing i thought i could work out to get things into perspective and help me plan. Of course, this is assuming the favored teams go into the final.
Lastly just the score lines of the last three Euros Semi finals and Finals to help you judge whether these matches are generally tight or scoring.
    EURO 2000
    SF1 – Portugal 1 – 2 France
    SF2 – Italy 0 – 0 Netherlands
    Final – France 2 – 1 Italy
    EURO 2004
    SF1 – Portugal 2 – 1 Holland
    SF2 – Greece 1 – 0 Czech
    Final – Portugal 0 – 1 Greece
    EURO 2008
    SF1 – Ger 3 – 2 Turkey
    SF2 – Rus 0 -3 Spain
    Final – Germany 0 – 1 Spain
Looking at this, the finals are generally tight so you should look at 2 defenders from both teams atleast . I would look at 3 from a single team as well. Back the stronger teams and the weaker defenses (Ala Portugal-Spain) for attackers and German for its defense since both Italy and England are generally tight teams. It is the first time I have tried to do this kind of an analysis. There might be mistakes. Hope it helps.

So looks like as I wont be around for line ups, I shall Captain Ozil over Gomez?

Secondly what does this Semi Final line up look like?

    RP
    Alba Arbeloa Boateng Hummels Badstuber
    Ozil Iniesta Fabregas
Muller Ronaldo (Oliveira - useful to have as will play first so can sub him out)

Fabregas > Torres if he starts, rest is filled with cheapies.

The amount of chances he gets he's worth keeping for sure, imo.

Plus Portugal are at their most lethal when they do thier lightning quick counter attacks. They couldn't really do that against the Czechs who were sitting back. I think they'll trouble Spain (if it is Spain).

      Ronaldo > Nani?

Nani looked more dangerous than Ronaldo last night I thought.

Disagree - everything portugal do seems to go through him, he could have easily had a hat trick last night. I'd rather have Ronaldo and skimp elsewhere, with the seeming lack of goal scoring midfielders to choose from.

He may play well and grab a goal. But i'm sure there are other players a lot cheaper that will grab a goal. Torres or Muller for example.

Yeah true. I'm going to be looking for cover in every team in the SF though and if I'm having portuguese cover, I'm having Ronaldo.

Disagree on spanish defense being one of the best. They have been lucky not to concede more goals.

Has to be a very confident manager who can replace an in-form Gomez with the experience of Klose......will provide options for semis though if Gomez doesnt start... I for one will definitely ship him out as an 11.7 mil non-starter can increase values anywhere else I need

Gomez is a great player, but his inclusion reduces the effectiveness of Muller Podolski and Ozil who are fantastic players. Klose would help bring the players into the game. Gomez will have his chance in the future but he needs some more experience. I would give him 30mins a match.

copy pasted from a german media site

    "
When Miroslav Klose is on the pitch, Oezil’s influence is greater as the two can link up. Oezil’s decreased influence in the side is a result of Gomez’s starting position. Gomez is a true finisher; he has also grown into a team player. However, his passing and harrying isn’t quite like Klose’s. Loew has to make a choice now: he can either go with the finisher or go with the hard-working legend.

Keeping these things in mind, I think this will be the starting line-up:

    Manuel Neuer

Jerome Boateng- Holger Badstuber- Mats Hummels- Philipp Lahm

    Bastian Schweinsteiger- Sami Khedira

Thomas Mueller- Mesut Oezil- Lukas Podolski

    Mario Gomez"

Ozil is just not in his best form at the moment. I think it has more to do with him than whether Gomez or Klose are on the pitch.
