FPL Gameweek 6 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned

Mohamed Salah (£12.6m) scored for the fifth occasion in six Gameweeks on Saturday as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) produced a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) blank for the first time since his return to Manchester United.

Raphinha (£6.5m), Ismaila Sarr (£6.2m), Demarai Gray (£5.8m) and Diogo Jota (£7.7m) all delivered attacking returns on a good day for mid-price midfielders, while Michail Antonio (£7.9m) returned to scoring ways and Manchester City banked their fifth clean sheet in six league matches.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of the day’s games but in the meantime, our resurrected Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from the day’s Gameweek 6 fixtures.

INJURIES AND BANS

FPL Gameweek 6 round-up: Saturday review, injuries and lessons learned 1

Raphinha (£6.5m) recovered from a hip injury to feature and score in Leeds United’s 2-1 loss to West Ham United but, after overcoming a blow to the head in the first half, was withdrawn midway through the second period – and pictured with ice on his legs on the hosts’ bench.

“He let us know that it was becoming difficult to stay on the pitch. Throughout the whole week, he was recovering from the knock he received against Newcastle. He played a great game as long as he could stay on the field.” – Marcelo Bielsa on Raphinha

Burnley goalscorer Maxwel Cornet (£6.0m) is one of three new injury worries for the Clarets.

“We lost J-Rod with a hamstring yesterday. Unfortunately, we lost Vyds to an injury. We’ve lost [Cornet] to an injury, [too]. It’s too early but I think it is his hamstring.” – Sean Dyche

Reece James (£5.6m) limped out of Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester City with an ankle problem, the extent of which is still unknown.

“I don’t know about Reece [James] at the moment. He twisted his ankle and it was very painful for him. I have no other news on him at this stage but let’s see how he is in the next few days.” – Thomas Tuchel

Two other defenders in the same price rung, Manchester United’s Luke Shaw (£5.5m) and Harry Maguire (£5.4m), came off with injuries in their defeat to Aston Villa.

“Sorry, I can’t give you any updates. We will have to use today and tomorrow and Monday or when we get the scans done and see how we are.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) was back on the bench for Liverpool for their clash with Brentford, who lost goalscoring centre-half Ethan Pinnock (£4.6m) to a hip problem in the first half.

Rodri (£5.5m), John Stones (£5.3m), Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m), Joe Willock (£5.9m) and Jack Harrison (£5.8m) were among the previously flagged players who returned to their respective clubs’ matchday squads on Saturday.

THE THINGS WE LEARNED

FPL Gameweek 6 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned 2
NEVER BACK AGAINST CITY’S DEFENCE

It’s five clean sheets on the spin for Manchester City, who didn’t look like conceding at all against Chelsea: the Blues have the lowest expected goals (xG) total of any side in Gameweek 6 so far.

Many of us will be considering City defenders from Gameweek 8 onwards but who would back against them shutting Liverpool out next weekend? Pep Guardiola’s side have conceded only two ‘big chances’ all season and just five shots on target – that’s eight fewer than any other side.

Following his assist at Stamford Bridge, Joao Cancelo (£6.0m) is now top among FPL defenders for points this season.

WHO IS ON PENALTIES AT UNITED?

Bruno Fernandes (£11.9m) skied a stoppage-time penalty as Ronaldo watched on in Manchester United’s defeat to Aston Villa.

Naturally, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was plagued with questions on spot-kicks in his post-match press conference and didn’t give us a completely clear-cut answer on who will take them in future.

“The decision [on who will take penalties] is made before the game, yeah.

“Bruno has been excellent, he’s such a good penalty taker and today, you’d back him with your mortgage. He’ll step forward every day of the week, for the club and the team, sometimes it just doesn’t go your way.

“This is going to be the headline isn’t it? Bruno has been excellent and Cristiano is probably the one who has scored the most penalties in world football. So we’ve got great takers here.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

MID-PRICE MIDFIELDERS REMAIN EN VOGUE

Salah is well clear at the top of the FPL midfielders’ table but the chasing pack are dominated by sub-£8.0m options.

And a look at FPL’s ‘form’ table (points divided by a club’s games played over the last 30 days) shows just why the likes of Sarr and Gray are so in demand.

The trio of Everton players featured above are all now among the top ten highest-scoring midfielders of the season.

Gray and Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.5m) have both returned in four of their six starts, while Andros Townsend (£5.4m) appears to be on penalty-taking duties in the absence of Everton’s two strikers – the winger scored from the spot in the Toffees’ 2-0 win over Norwich City.

FIVE DEFENCES TO TARGET

Five teams remain without a clean sheet this season and they all showed on Saturday why they are sides to target from an FPL perspective, conceding in their respective Gameweek 6 fixtures and allowing plenty of chances along the way.

Norwich, Watford, Newcastle, Leeds and Burnley are the clubs in question and all of those teams are in the bottom six for ‘big chances conceded’ in 2021/22.

All bar Newcastle of that quintet conceded between 1.99 and 2.17 expected goals (xG) on Saturday.

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 6

Another week and another table-topping appearance from Antonio, whose expected goal involvement (xGI) figure of 1.63 was the highest in Gameweek 6 so far. The West Ham also couldn’t be bettered for shots in the box (six).

Antonio (5.41) is only narrowly behind Salah (5.43) for xGI over the course of the season, despite playing one game fewer.

The fall of Fernandes in FPL circles has been remarkable but he is not a complete busted flush, especially if – and that’s a big if – he remains on penalties. He created a remarkable 10 chances on Saturday, twice as many as any other player, and more than any other player in a single game in the last 20 months.

Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.7m), who has now delivered attacking returns in five of his six appearances this season, took his tally to 16 key passes with another five at Watford. He is now top among FPL forwards for chances created.

Jamie Vardy (£10.4m) certainly seems to be benefitting from playing as a sole striker and not sharing the limelight with Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.1m). He racked up more penalty box touches (14) than anyone else in Gameweek 6 and is second for that stat among forwards in the season as whole, as well as shots in the box.

Vardy is now level with Salah and Antonio for goals scored (five) in 2021/22.

White & Ramsdale will likely score similar so the question is can Gallagher, Duffy & Livramento score more than 10 points ?

I think Man U at home to Everton could be a rout. Lots of familiar faces for Ronaldo to take advantage of.

If anything, wait until as late as possible, after Champions League games certainly.

Are you talking about the Villa blank? I didn't think he would do all that great against Villa. But, maybe after blanking, Greenwood will get a talking to and maybe they might click against Everton. Greenwood literally turned, saw Ronaldo open, and was like Nah, and turned back around the other way and shot right into a defender, on that one position. So dumb. His shots were such trash in general. I only have Greenwood and am holding, though. My lineup looks great for GW7, and having the wildcard for GW8 seems better if possible, idk what the original poster's lineup is.

Well, maybe not familiar, but not all too impressive, anyway. And the FDR of 4 could be the joke of the season. Everton, at home? 4? Utterly ridiculous. And those things aren't ever updated. So Everton could still be without Richarlison and DCL.

For those who are targeting WC this week or next, what formation are we eyeing up? I’ve always played 3-4-3 but honestly with the value that the 5.5-6 defenders bring compared to their counterparts at the same price in midfield a 4-3-3 doesn’t look all that bad…

I played my WC before this week and went for TAA, Cancelo, Rudiger & Alonso at the back with Salah and CR7 (to become Lukaku)& Antonio as main captain options.
This set up let's me have few mid price mids rotating depending on fixtures - pretty happy with it so it's bound to go bad 😉

You’ve done well to play it early and get ahead of us, catching a few price changes along the way as well. Your biggest problem now will be seeing all our WC drafts over the coming weeks hahaha. But I like your set up the defense is as solid as they get and you have a captain option every week

I've been playing with different WCs for GW 8 and feel the most satisfied with a 4-3-3 as well.

TAA plus a trio of City/Chelsea defenders and Liv as a bench option.

In midfield I'm only really happy with Salah and Raphina, not sure who else to pick up. Been looking at Grealish for the third option but the output just isnt there yet. That's why I feel like I'm leaning toward a lighter midfield with fixtures turning for the mid price asessts like Sarr and Ben, plus the unknown of minutes and drop in output from players like Greenwood and Jota.

Upfront it seems obvious with Kaku and Antonio. Armstrong has brillant fixtures but I might just keep hold of Toney as my third as Brentford have proven to be an exciting and attacking side and after the Chelsea fixture I fancy then scoring against anyone

Similar thinking to you here mate. The defense you mentioned plus 2 midfielders are all but locks in my side, as well as Lukaku and Antonio but it’s the other pieces to the puzzle that need to be filled in.
For that 3rd striker spot I’m weighing up whether or not to take a punt on Jesus instead of a city midfielder becayse other than Grealish he seems to be getting good minutes plus is further up the field I believe, although a little more expensive. On the flip side, going with Toney/Armstrong instead frees up more cash in midfield for someone like Zaha or another in the price range or even the mid ranges like Sarr/Bennie and then maybe having a 4th mid who’s around 5.5 who can come off the bench if needed. Lots to ponder for sure but I like your thinking

I'm thinking of a 343/433 hybrid with a 4th defender and cheap mids that can easily rotate in and out according to fixtures. I think White is great value at 4.4 for that position.

He is a great value but then you look at Tierney and really want to find this 0.5m for the Scotsman as he is often playing as a winger.
The other issue I've found on my WC was that once you get 1 x Man City, 2 x Chelsea and TAA there is simply no point to spend 4.4 on a bench fodder when you can have Livramento.

4-4-2 even, with Bamford injured, and Toney not thát alluring until GW 10, I'm thinking.

Cancelo - TAA - Alonso - Rudiger (Livra)

Salah - Raph - Benrahma (2 out of Sarr or Gray or ESR or Odegaard)

This looks good as well imo, although Dennis’ fixtures are changing he’s still getting good minutes and taking plenty of shots so is a good option in a 4-4-2 as opposed to a 4.5 who won’t ever start. Today’s game will be a great auction for the 2 Arsenal mids because I’m sure interested to see how the two you mentioned compare, ESR nice being cheaper but Ode on set pieces is a nice thing to have in the back pocket. Only other question that may arise is if you can afford whether to go double city defenders and single Chelsea or double Chelsea single City

Yesterday muddied the waters a bit. Premium defenders blanking - City aside, mid-price midfielders excelling.
Long-term though, I'm seguing into a Back 4 - TAA and 3 from Che/City. Mid: Salah and 2 mid-pricers; 3 up top, only one being a premium. So that's a mainly 433 with a decent 4th mid to step in when a defender is rotated.

Think double Chelsea / double City is a matter of TV - there is 1M difference between the two.

Gallagher another nice option too. There's 6 or 7 which don't miss each other much.

Graelish or another 8M option reduces the bench options dramatically, which increases the likelihood of being stuck when Pep roulette and Tuchel Toto hit the same week.

Yeah, I could do Grealish to Gray/ Sarr, but I think Grealish will start most of the matches and Livra and Luiz are decent subs with good fixtures. Double city defence is kind of differential in my mini league as everyone would have atleast 1 city defender by GW8

I've pulled trigger on wc last night to get some early price rises(kaku/cancelo/doucoure) and avoid some drops.

I've currently got salah/kaku/Ronaldo, but not sure if Its too unbalanced!

    Core team is
    Guaita
    TAA- Cancelo - (duffy/livramento)
Salah - Sarr - Odegarrd- Doucoure
    Ronaldo - Lukaku - Antonio
    Fodder - 4.5 mf- manquillo

Rotating 3rd between livramenro and Duffy.

Doucoure/Odegarrd could become gray/kovacic, and sarr could become raphina.
    Any thoughts?

Yep, initially wasn't planning on having all 3, then put them in same team, and came up with this.
Hard not to pick kaku with his fixtures, salah is salah, and ronaldo will score goals. Hard to pick one to drop!It seems ok

The question is whether 2 premium defenders like Alonso & Cancelo will outscore CR7 on a regular basis.

      I think they will.

I have all four premiums and a defence of Trent, Shaw and Christiansen so I’m not sure it’s that straightforward?

There's a difference between Trent Shaw and a 5.0 Chelsea DEF and

          TAA - Alonso - Rudiger - Cancelo

Replace Shaw with Rudiger and it’s pretty similar tbh. It leaves Cancelo versus Ronaldo. I know which one I prefer. But I respect your view. Every player plays the game differently.

You can't compare Alonso to Christensen.

Agree though - not a huge difference, but now I have to decide if the 7M price difference between Alonso and CR7 is justified and whilst I'm a big fan, CR7million is too much.

No, not 100%, you'll need playing bench cover, but purely on merit, Chillwell would have to train the house down to displace him from the starting XI at the moment.

Interesting to see how they line up in the UCL.

You can never say that. Sod's Law the week you bring him in, Chilwell finally starts. Christensen is not nailed either, but as both are risks, it's understandable if you go for the cheaper option.

Agree, it's a risk/reward equation, as with all decisions in fantasy football. The upside of Alonso playing 3 out of the 4 games outweighs, for me, spending 7M more and filling my team with perennial 2 point players.

                    Each to their own.

Thin margins, had he scored you'd be laughing.
Having said that as someone who went Brunoless from GW1 and had to face a lot of unpleasant comments on here especially after first game - his miss yesterday felt like a bit of justice 😉

Not exactly the same, but not far off.
I'd held Martinez since gw1, to this gw. Didn't see his haul vs utd coming, and rush of blood during week I transferred in kasper for his 1 pointer. No idea what i was thinking!

He said he will step up again to take it.

Martinez was begging Ronaldo to take it then he played mind games on Bruno too & an absolute shithousery towards the Utd fans after the pen miss.

Glad Bruno missed it but it seems he is stubborn & wouldn’t want Ronaldo to take it next time.

70% of Bruno’s goals in the PL are pens so it’s obvious. Without them he won’t have very good numbers

Alonso worth the extra over Rudiger? Million Dollar question! Christensen also seems nailed if James is out..

Azpil - Christensen - Tilva - Rudiger - Alonso feels first choice.

At 5.0 and decent on bonus, could easily prove better value than Rudiger.
