Who are the best Romelu Lukaku replacements in FPL?

Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) is poised to miss Gameweek 9 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after injuring his ankle in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League win over Malmo.

Thomas Tuchel may give us a more exact prognosis on the Belgian’s fitness in Friday’s pre-match press conference but the premium FPL forward is seemingly set to sit out Saturday’s home fixture against Norwich City at the very least, with the Chelsea boss saying Lukaku would miss “some games”.

Over three million Fantasy bosses owned the Belgium international after Gameweek 8 but the mass exodus has begun, with around 400,000 of those having already ditched him at the time of writing.

So who are the best replacements for the injured Lukaku in FPL?

We take a look at the options available to Fantasy managers in the article below.

All our stats and graphics are taken from our Premium Members Area, where there is currently a seven-day free trial on offer.

BEST LUKAKU REPLACEMENTS: PREMIUM FORWARDS

JAMIE VARDY

Vardy on target again as Man Utd's defensive issues continue in Gameweek 8 2

Top among FPL forwards for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 9, Jamie Vardy (£10.6m) is the go-to Lukaku replacement for many Fantasy managers.

It’s not so much the immediate fixtures – Brentford (a), Arsenal (h), Leeds (a) and Chelsea (h) is a mixed bag over the next four Gameweeks – as the form, with Vardy now the Premier League’s joint-top goalscorer after scoring on five occasions in his last four appearances.

Some of us may have wanted to wait for Gameweek 13 and a ticker-topping four-game stretch for Leicester City but moving for Vardy now at least saves a transfer further down the line, and opposition difficulty doesn’t seem to be much of a barrier to the veteran hitman anyway: last season, for example, he bagged 10 goals and assists combined in 12 fixtures against the ‘big six’ sides.

It’s true that 50% of his attacking returns this season have come against Norwich City and Burnley, two of the weakest defences in the division.

And the return to the starting XI of Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.0m) is also worth monitoring, as the Nigerian was the bigger goal threat of the two when Brendan Rodgers paired them up top towards the final third of last season.

Vardy hasn’t been adversely affected so far, with totals of six shots and five attempts in the box in the last two Gameweeks in keeping with his output in 2021/22 before that, and it has been Iheanacho who has been playing slightly wider and deeper.

Above: Touch heatmaps for Vardy (left) and Iheanacho (right) over the last two Gameweeks

One word of caution for medium-term holders of Vardy is that the 34-year-old striker is currently enjoying midweek breathers in the UEFA Europa League to aid with his recovery between league games. More Premier League matches replace those European nights throughout November and December, with nine top-flight games to contest in the space of 35 days from Gameweeks 13-21. The Leicester striker may not escape a benching or two over that period, then, but the same could be argued for huge swathes of the FPL players in our teams.

HARRY KANE

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9

The August curse extended to mid-October this year, with Harry Kane (£12.1m) only opening his Premier League account in last week’s win over Newcastle United.

As is the case with Vardy, it’s not until next month that Spurs’ fixtures really leap off the page – a four-match period from Gameweeks 12-15 looking like the ideal time to pounce on the Lilywhites.

Kane’s extra cost is the main deterrent considering that Vardy and an alternative route into the Spurs attack, Son Heung-min (£10.1m), can be snapped up for some £1.5m-£2.0m less.

Kane’s underlying stats have really stepped up a gear over the last four Gameweeks, as he’s joint-top among FPL forwards for shots alongside Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) and Vardy.

While plenty of those efforts are coming from distance, the typically dead-eyed Kane has still had more shots on target than any of his positional rivals – and the same number of big chances as Ronaldo.

Still, Son is outgunning Kane for big chances, shots in the box and expected goal involvement (xGI) even over this four-match period, so justifying that extra £2.0m outlay if it’s a ‘one or the other’ dilemma is not easy.

THE OTHERS

Cristiano Ronaldo dominates his premium peers stats-wise over the course of the season but some stiff fixtures, not to mention United’s iffy form and inability to carve out a single ‘big chance’ for him over the last three Gameweeks, leads us away from the veteran Portuguese.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m) is arguably the pick of the rest from the premium pool. Having found the net in each of his last three appearances at the Emirates, the Gabon international and his Gunners teammates have four more very favourable home encounters against Aston Villa, Watford, Newcastle and Southampton between now and Gameweek 16.

Trips to Leicester and Manchester United needn’t be feared from a defensive perspective either, with those two hapless backlines on just one clean sheet apiece in 2021/22.

A lack of big chances this season (two, fewer than 17 other forwards) is the main downside and he’s having to rely on his historically strong goal conversion rate to maintain his output. A possible recall for Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) would also presumably see Aubameyang shunted to the left flank, as has happened many times before.

Gabriel Jesus (£8.6m) is being routinely overlooked by many of us, with the week-to-week rotation risk and a ‘reverse out of position’ tag cited as the main reasons. And yet, despite registering fewer minutes than 15 other FPL forwards, he is still third among players in his Fantasy position for points.

The no-shows and one-pointers will be as regular as the double-digit hauls, nevertheless still resulting in a decent points-per-match average (Jesus’s is currently 5.90). Strong benches will be needed to negotiate those rests, so with many of us taking punts on rotation risks such as Phil Foden (£8.0m), Reece James (£5.5m) and Ben Chilwell (£5.7m), the Man City man may be one gamble too many.

BEST LUKAKU REPLACEMENTS: MID-PRICE/BUDGET FORWARDS

IVAN TONEY

Toney off the mark as injuries and Covid impact Villa 4

Lukaku’s injury doesn’t just allow FPL managers to move sideways between premium forwards but downgrade to a mid-price or budget option in order to reallocate funds elsewhere, perhaps with a view to recruiting Son, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) or the man who looks set to lead Chelsea’s line in Lukaku and Timo Werner‘s (£8.6m) absences, the ‘out of position’ Kai Havertz (£8.1m).

One such cut-price striker is Ivan Toney (£6.4m), whose Brentford side sit top of our Season Ticker from now until Gameweek 18.

    Struggling to settle on the starting XI here;

    Ramsdale (set on him atleast)

    Cancelo - TAA - Chilwell - Livramento - Jansson

    Salah - Son - Gray - Gallagher - Mbueno

    Antonio - Vardy - Toney

    Thinking my bench would be;

    Gallagher - Toney - Jansson?

    Would you have it differently?

When rolling with a full squad, treat everyone like they're the same price. Fixture, form and stats, full stop

Toney isn't shooting enough, and faces an improving defence. TAA isn't contributing enough to his team's many goals, and is facing a good attack. Jansson isn't attacking enough, and is facing a much improved blitz attack. Everybody else combines at least two of those predictive factors well enough to start

I'd go TAA - Toney - Jansson, ignore the backlash in replies, and come back here after the GW ends to see if it holds water

Another perspective: Leicester could easily concede to Brentford's vigorous attack, and Toney could well be involved. (I have him and will double up with Mbeumo here soon).

Trent is facing a dysfunctional United that staged an impressive comeback and deserved to win, but Liverpool's defense is far superior to Atalanta's. Plus, he's always capable of contributing offensively, and would you back United's defense to hold Liverpool at bay?

          Benching Trent is daft, imo.

Who have Liverpool conceded goals to this season, across all competitions, and who have they kept clean sheets against?

How many goals have Liverpool scored with Trent on the pitch, across all competitions, how many of these involved the full backs, and which kind of opponents did Trent return against?

It's either Klopp has tweaked something (Salah's creativity increased noticeably; the high line is employed even in the biggest games), or it's been two to three months of luck

Or you could simplify it into "benching Trent is daft", and avoid actual arguments

simply put, Trent is the best attacking defender in the league, and United has one of the worst defences in the last 4, worse than Norwich.

Leicester has one of the most error prone defences and just shipped 3 to Spartak Moscow, with a goal coming straight from a Soyuncu mistake. Brentford has top attacking stats despite some hard games recently.

Just devil's advocate and giving you the other side of the argument.

That's not been Trent's role this season. It's either he's been incredibly unlucky or something has changed. They're scoring far too many goals without his involvement. That's my point there. Old Trent would have had around 3 more assists when Liverpool scored this many. Salah is doing something to him, and I don't have the time to dive deep enough to find out what it is, or why

About Brentford: yes, the team has top attacking stats. But Toney isn't the one shooting so often for the team, especially in the tougher games since the switch to 3-5-2 midway last season. It's Mbeumo

Here's the problem: Liverpool will do well, but that's not currently translating to TAA exploding; exactly the same for Toney. Just not looking great for this particular GW, with the other options available to start

Good breakdown here and it has dawned on me he’s a few attacking returns down in relation to where he should be given the level of goals Liverpool have scored. I still think he is the best defender though and worth the extra outlay.

I’m currently playing TAA and have Toney as first bench and hoping this is the week he gets his return.

Not sure what I was avoiding. I made an attempt to defend starting Trent vs. United in the paragraph before i stated benching him was daft. I stand by it. Did you read that part?

Could I be wrong? Absolutely. But benching the best fullback in England vs a dodgy defense just doesn't add up to me.

Answer the two questions I asked. You don't have to type the answer. Just check, one by one, the points I made

Remember Trent wasn't a great asset for almost half of last season? Klopp tweaks things, or things happen to the team. It's 8 GWs of data, with UCL following the exact same trend too. Check this season's Trent role for Liverpool (and Liverpool's defensive performances so far) out carefully, is all I'm saying

                Do you see it now?

I see a player who has had one blank in his 6 appearances this season. If you're saying he isn't as good vs bigger, stronger teams vs what he was doing the last couple seasons, then yeah, I grant you that. I don't subscribe to the notion that 'old Trent would have had around 3 more assists' or that 'Salah is doing something to him.' That's speculation, not actual argumentation.

              Interesting points and opinion here.
Personally I’m in the never bench Trent camp.
His role this season has changed slightly where he’s moving to more central roles in midfield and closer to goal, which has helped Mo create more space (who has been really influential for big chances created).
With Shaw this weekend, I see Trent delivering more crosses into the box vs Lindelof and co
This game can easily distract you and get you to overthink and be clever for the sake of it.
He simply has more upside for points than either of Gray or Gallagher and would start him ahead of one/both these guys

I could also go to town on the Brentford point, but it's already stated there: Toney isn't shooting enough. I said everybody else has two+ of those factors working for them, and this included Mbeumo, who's shooting a lot in that vigorous attack

            T. Frank employs Toney in the hold-up role when facing teams he thinks can score well if their attacks are allowed to flow from the back. I expect the Championship Toney to be back from the Burnley game, when his battling capability isn't so needed anymore

No, neither am I. And I would have to bench Livramento/Mbeumo, also an argument for Christensen potentially not being preferred and then it is absolutely a waste of a -4 this week.

Stopped overthinking it and went Lukaku to Vardy.

For anyone stuck on a 50-50 toss up between Vardy and Kane:
    - Vardy's stats are better over the season
    - Vardy's stats are better over the last 4 GWs
    - Leicester's attacking stats are better than Spurs' over the season
    - Leicester's attacking stats are better than Spurs' over the last 4 GWs
    - He is cheaper

I'll probably sell for Kane / Son in GW 12.

That's one way to put it. Another way to put it is he's returned in all but 2 games this season, one of which was v MCI.

I think over a longer stretch though, Vardy's fixtures are arguably better than Kane's, up until about gw17/18.

Not getting any Spurs. Salah Havertz Foden Townsend (Mbeumo)
Antonio Jimenez (Toney) front 8 atm but might sell Toney when he reaches 6.5 as bought him for that since beginning

        Good write-up here:

        @BigManBakar
"Kane has recorded at least one big chance in each of his previous three league fixtures, and is showing strong signs of a return to form.
Over the last three Gameweeks, only Salah has registered more big chances or recorded a healthier expected goal involvement (xGi) than Kane.
Kane’s tally of five big chance involvements in the past three fixtures means that he really has to be prioritized soon as Spurs go on a favorable run of fixtures from Gameweek 12...
There is a case to be made for captaining Kane in each one of GW 12, 14 and 15:

        Kane: LEE BRE NOR
        Salah: ARS eve wol
        Vardy: CHE sou avl

The argument for Kane is to prepone the move and do it 3 weeks earlier than planned as it saves a transfer later. I can't fault the idea."

Think it depends on what else you need to do. Kane might be fine but i did Vardy because of form, and because i could turn a non-playing forward into Toney. Truth be told, I've lost patience with super-premium forwards.

I haven't owned him yet this season. But not planning to bring him in on the WC. Will wait a few weeks. Pool defence shaky. Can invest money better further forward for now I think. As long as you have three strong defenders - for me Cancelo, Chilwell, Rudiger - and two decent playing options to cover random benchings, I think that's enough for now.

Nice team. Just not sure about KDB. Can he be the 200+ points a season player he has been in the past? Different City, different set up and personnel. No Aguero to put away all those assists. Also Sane and an in-form Sterling were more direct and clinical than Grealish, Jesus, Mahrez, etc.

Two goals in the last two suggest he might have found his shooting boots but not convinced he'll get enough returns to justify the price tag.

If I wanted a second premium midfielder I think Mane would be the go to man at the moment.

      Good luck anyway!
