Man City v Everton team news: Foden starts, Dias and Jesus benched

Gameweek 12 continues with Manchester City v Everton at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon.

Kick-off is at 14:00 BST.

Ruben Dias (£6.1m) and Gabriel Jesus (£8.7m) drop to the bench for Pep Guardiola’s side, with Kevin De Bruyne (11.8m) and Jack Grealish (£7.7m) missing out completely due to Covid and a minor knock respectively.

As a result, 19-year-old Cole Palmer (£4.5m) makes his first Premier League start, and is joined in the starting XI by Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) – who is available again after suspension – and Raheem Sterling (£10.6m).

Elsewhere, Phil Foden (£8.3m) has overcome a leg problem and could lead the line, while Joao Cancelo (£6.5m), who has been directly involved in seven goals in 17 games in all competitions for City this term, features at left-back.

Everton are unchanged from Gameweeek 11, with Andros Townsend (£5.6m), Anthony Gordon (£4.5m) and Demarai Gray (£5.7m) supporting Richarlison (£7.4m) in Rafa Benitez’s 4-2-3-1 formation.

Only joking but I have witnessed the greatest gulf in talent I have seen in Premiership football.
I have Cancelo. Should I be happy?
Not really but when I see Gray out Richarlison getting 5 yellows and Iwobi coming on the field I feel beaten up and helpless!

    2 major factors that contributed to Ole’s demise;

    1. Not investing in CM since Fred
    2. Persevering with players that aren’t good enough(you know who they are)

The money spent on Sancho should’ve gone on a RB and CM.

    1. Postman Ty
      • 9 Years

His demise was not being a good manager. Put a top manager in there and those players are all of the sudden knocking on the world class door. I hate Fred, but at the end of the day he plays decent for Brazil. You can go around the whole squad and everyone was/is highly rated. Poor performances can be entirely the managers 'fault'.

Tuchel won the CL with the squad inherited from Lampard.

Are you joking? Alonso, Rudiger, Azpi, Jorginho, Kovcaic, Christensen, Kepa, even Barkley to a degree now. They've all been hated and ridiculed under different managers, and absolutely top class under others. All of them have been dropped for consistent poor form for significant periods. Not to mention the handful of academy products who had zero experience that are now borderline team of the season contenders.

Chelsea have experienced this more than any other clubs, probably because of their propensity to change managers. One season they're 10th with a squad nobody wants, the next season they're league champions with the same players and a new manager.

Comparing apples and oranges. Tuchel inherited a team with players who had already won the league/FA cup not so long ago. And all the signings that lampard made added to his disposal. Probably the best DM In the world in Kante. Tuchel has done a great job but he wouldn’t challenge with this United squad because of a clear lack of quality in key areas and big names that don’t show up in big games. How many United players would get in City, Chelsea or Liverpool’s starting 11?

                Sorry what?
Azpi looked absolutely dusted at RB for a year or two and with a simple manager change rediscovered his prime at RCB and even RWB.
Rudiger wasn't at the club the last time Chelsea won the league and was wildly inconsistent for years until Tuchel.
Kante has missed half of the games available since Tuchel came in.
Alonso went from one of the worst LBs in the league to the best LWB under multiple managers and they won the league in 16/17 largely because of a manager unlocking him.
Jorginho was the perfect player for Sarri and allegedly worthless in other systems. World class now in multiple systems. He didn't win anything until last season.
Christensen was wildly inconsistent and error prone and now looks flawless in the best defence in the world. He
didn't play a role in the FA Cup win in 17/18, not that it even matters it was so long ago.
Kepa was horrible and now under Tuchel keeps clean sheets almost every game. That's partly down to the pressure of Mendy and improved defence (which is still a positive for good coaching) but he's also noticeably better at shot stopping and claiming balls into the box which were his major problems. He didn't win anything before.
Barkley has never played a role in winning anything.
Lampard's signings (Pulisic, Havertz, Ziyech, Werner) have had a lot of injuries and never won anything before.
The academy payers certainly didn't play any role in previous trophies.

Honestly how delusional can you be? Chelsea won the Champions League when the combined best 11 literally would have been Man City's starting 11, because Tuchel pulled a masterclass (3 times over Pep no less). There wasn't a single Chelsea player in the team of the season last yer because nobody rated the players as top quality. Look where they are now, Champions of Europe and top of the table.

A top manager wouldn’t be able to win any major honours with this team, there’s a severe lack of quality in CM and RB tied with very inconsistent players - Rashford, Maguire, Shaw, Bruno, Pogba - the list goes on

Rashford isn’t nailed. Shaw isn’t nailed. Bruno isn’t nailed(hasn’t produced for Portugal yet) maguire only nailed because of the lack quality of English centre backs

            1. Postman Ty
              • 9 Years
              2 years, 5 months ago

Rashford was absolutely in the team before he got injured. Shaw played every game at the Euros. Bruno was one of the best players in the league for a season and is definitley in Portugal's strongest 11. Maguire was regarded as one of the best CBs in the league and clear first choice for England with other players like Stones in the team and options like Tomori aren't even getting in the squad despite playing incredible. Sure Maguire hasn't lived up to 80m and there's context on that tag, but he was very highly rated by everyone.

Grealish and foden have more quality than Rashford and was always gonna lose his spot. Bruno was great against the weaker teams last season but never does it against the big teams a bit like lukaku. He didn’t even start the last game for Portugal and got dropped in the euros! When chilwell is fully fit he’s better than shaw. Do we have to discuss maguire is a fraud he will never be anywhere near as good as dias and vvd! The recruitment has been woeful, city buy Cancelo, Rodri and dias we buy awb Fred and maguire. Let me ask you again how many United players would get in our top 3 rivals starting 11?

                1. Postman Ty

                  2 years, 5 months ago

Recency bias: Grealish has never come close to Rashford's best season, even being the big fish in a little pond. It doesn't matter who you beat if you win more games than the competition... stop trying to act like that's a valid point. And entirely wrong about Lukaku now since Conte had him, nice point against yourself. Speaking of Conte, look what he did with Moses and his WBs at Inter, going to say they were all successful before him? Stop trying to compare players in poor form with a crap manager to players in good form under a good manager, that's exactly my point.
Rodri has been a shadow of Fernandinho and doesn't make the weak Spain squad. You probably knew nothing about Cancelo before he joined City because he didn't play a significant part of winning anything. Even more so for Dias.
People used to talk about AWB being the best defensive RB in the league and look how he's developed specifically under Ole.
Again nobody complains about Fred for Brazil, as poor s he is for United.
Weird how nobody complains about Pogba for France.
Weird how Maguire is good (at worst) for England and has been in the team of the season debate before.

Recruitment was awful. CR7 only made them worse and I said it before he joined. There was a reason nobody else was interested. It was one for the kit sales and new fans, etc. Sancho money on Rice and Cavani up top. They would’ve been a much better side and Ole would still have his job

It always comes down to a playing 4.5 mid for me. Wish we had playing 4.5 forwards. Maybe we overplay it.

Shearer on South African channel just said Sterling fortunate not to get a yellow for diving. Tim Sherwood was not sure.

That doesn't sound like something Sterling would do tbh.

Is there any site where I can see how my team would've done if I made no changes from a particular GW(not from the beginning of the season)? The GW8 WC actually ruined my team, and want to see how my pre WC team would've done if I hadn't WCed.

    Pick 2 moves:

    a) White to James
    b) Rudiger to Chilwell
    c) Havertz to Jota
    d) Havertz to Foden
    e)

As things stand, 4 of my 5 defenders due to get double points, with the other defender getting 9 points. These full backs prices are surely going to rocket next season.

They will have to make them 8 8.5m and even 9m. I would say if TAA was 9 m many would still get him. It would at least make others have to consider their options.

Wouldn't be surprised to see them all go towards the 7.5m treatment Trent got. It's a matter of them all improving and becoming nailed at the same time.

I didn't have Trent until now for gw13. Thought the 2m could be used elsewhere - plus fixtures. I have Rudgier instead of Chilwell got on James early. Rudiger seems to be the forgotten man.

Regullion/Royal will be the next trendy wing backs - it will change.
Also Cash/Targett will break the mould Gerrard loves an attacking full back.

Because I swapped James to Rudiger after he sprained his ankle, and don't have the luxury of doing a Rudiger -> FB move right now. Think it's worth a -4?

I haven't done the -4 of Azpi -> Chilwell yet but but it would have paid off basically any week if I did. Livramento has been the one keeping me in a good spot but the subs let me down this week (as expected honestly).

I’ve been sticking with the strategy/team structure I decided on when I used my WC, and it’s been fine. I’ve climbed from 1.8 million to 90k rank (though Cancelo’s returns today will probably knock me back outside the 100k)

Definitely been hard picking the structure this season, which was already different to previous seasons, and then trying to change it to suit these new options.
