Who is the best third Liverpool asset to own during AFCON?

With Mohamed Salah (£12.8m), Sadio Mane (£11.8m) and Naby Keita (£5.0m) linking up with their respective teams for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) this week, a third Liverpool slot has opened up in most Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads.

The trio are expected back for Gameweek 24, but it is worth noting that the AFCON final and third-place play-off takes place on February 6th, just four days before Liverpool are due to entertain Leicester City.

As a result, if Egypt, Senegal or Guinea reach the latter stages, the players in question would be faced with a tight turnaround, with their involvement in Gameweek 24 perhaps in doubt.

AFCON/FPL TIMELINE:
  • Jan 9 – AFCON begins
  • Jan 16 – Liverpool v Brentford (Gameweek 22)
  • Jan 23 – AFCON Round of 16
  • Jan 23 – Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Gameweek 23)
  • Jan 29 – AFCON Quarter-Finals
  • Feb 2 – AFCON Semi-Finals
  • Feb 6 – AFCON Final/Third-place play-off
  • Feb 10 – Liverpool v Leicester City (Gameweek 24)
  • Feb 13 – Burnley v Liverpool (Gameweek 25)

Losing three regulars during a hectic period in the season and with others out through coronavirus and injury is not ideal for Liverpool, with key attacking pair Salah and Mane responsible for 24 of their side’s 52 Premier League goals in 2021/22.

Discussing their departures after Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea, assistant manager Pep Lijnders said:

“You can try to plan it, but you can never prepare it. It is not a worry because we have faith in the boys we have and a few boys are coming back as well. We know that certain players can play more offensively as well, they have been playing in midfield, but they can play more offensively as well.”

However, for FPL managers, it has presented an opportunity to bring in a third Liverpool asset alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.3m) and Diogo Jota (£8.2m), at least for a short period, which we’ll explore in this, our latest Members Article.

THE FIXTURES

In addition to the fixtures detailed above, there is also a possibility that Liverpool may be handed a Double Gameweek 22, with postponed matches still to be rearranged against Leeds United (h) and Arsenal (a).

If that comes to fruition, it certainly increases the appeal of a short-term move for a third Liverpool asset.

The below graphic, courtesy of the excellent @Legomane_FPL, outlines the Reds’ schedule, with domestic cup ties against Arsenal (x2) and Shrewsbury Town also to navigate in the coming days.

Clearly not going to make moves untiI next week but am thinking Mahrez Dawson to Maddison Robertson but .3 m short- would you take a hit to remove Ronaldo to Dennis or DCL? And have cash to get KDB perhaps in 23 or bank as route back to Salah

Early thoughts on what to do with this squad appreciated

    DCL Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Reguilón Dalot Dawson*
    Son Jota Mahrez* Bowen Gray
    Ronaldo Broja Antonio

Robbo & Maddison in will be my moves too, i have an easy route though through James + Bilva, for you when the dgw is announced the moves should become clear, i would try and keep Ron though if he has a good double

No need to fill the third Liverpool spot up in your team. That just enforces a double transfer to get salah back. Plenty of good options elsewhere. Leave the Liverpool spot open.

Because it's a premium defender slot I don't think it's worth it. I know that Liverpool have a great double but you give back all the points in transfers down the line to get rid of them and buy Salah back.

Much surgery needed to get rid again and funds in awkward places.

Depends if you can play BB in 22 with Robbo in your team he's an easy loss for a cheapie 5th defender going forward which enables Salah back easily ( in my team anyway)

            Possibly.

I'm planning to WC Salah back in. In which case, I could do it.

Something like Livra + Bernardo > VvD + Saka. Bench Boost and then struggle through a week or two before WC'ing Salah back in GW24 or 25.

Most people will need two transfers to get him back regardless of who they buy. The main issue is that you have no choice in who one of the two must be.

Coady? Not attacking enough for my liking. I believe that rotating decent defenders like Cash, Reguillon/Emerson, Tierney, Cucurella/Lamptey could be the way to go in this situation. They cost more than normal fodders in normal seasons, but with this covid situation they could be worth the money. We are back in a situation where Salah and Son may be the only expensive assets needed. Whether Kane, CR7, Lukaku and KdB are worth the money, I am not certain.

Is getting a third Liverpool player in actually beneficial?

To get Salah back, you will be forced to sell Robertson or Jota. But they likely won’t give enough cash for the Salah upgrade….so you will end up with a -8!?

      • 8 Years

Not if you plan to sell Son. But I agree it'll probably be three transfers Robbo, a budget mid and Ronaldo.

Agree with this. I wouldn't mind WCing in GW 24/25 to get Salah back and specially if other changes are needed too. With only 13-14 gameweeks remaining at that time it definitely isn't too early to use the wildcard specially if you still have 2 x FH.

GW24 coincides with the start of Chelsea’s blanks so I wouldn’t want to wildcard ahead of that. I’m looking at using FTs to navigate the blanks in GW27, and wildcarding in GW28. Hopefully this saves a FH.

You can go one week without Salah if the - 8 scares you and it's only a -4 . You could comfortably make back the - 4 with 3 Liverpool in the double and even well exceed the hit? risk reward is all

We will look at the mail you've sent, but I'll repeat again that we do not share mail data with third parties. Obviously if someone has signed up to a specific FanTeam offer on FanTeam's site, etc, then obviously FT would have that data in their system, but that's not coming from FFS.

Although I don't know specifics, as far as I understand it, (and from seeing promotion elsewhere), FanTeam have been working with many partners in the fantasy and football space above and beyond FFS and Andy.
As to how they have your info I really have no idea I'm afraid, we don't have visibility on their marketing, but I will repeat that it was not from FFS and I don't believe they would do anything unlawful.

Finally, I do have to ask, why is FanTeam considered 'drivel'? Are all non-FPL fantasy games unworthy or something? Whilst FPL is obviously incredible and we love it way too much, I've played lots of others on an off (free and premium) and think FanTeam is a genuinely decent second game, tbh it has very similar rules to FPL.

I do totally respect that some people don't want to gamble but I must admit I don't fully understand the blanket distaste for other games or being able to win some money from your fantasy knowledge / effort - especially when the game is free to play (like the current FanTeam '2nd chance' and various other competitions). But again, fair play, that's just me, totally respect people have different opinions and are free to not engage.

N.B. I would also stress that FFS have not reduced our FPL content in order to cover other fantasy games.

Easiest way to figure out who sends you to what is to put a + before the @ sign. It creates a sub email which goes to your email.

          I.e. if my email is;

          Fplbrains@gmail.com

          I'd sign up to ffs with;

          Fplbrains+ffs@gmail.com

Anyone who contacts me after being sent my details from ffs will have +ffs in the email and it'll be easy to figure out who.

          I agree.

Usually it's a completely unknown player with virtual zero ownership who ends up hauling during a DGW and then does nothing for the rest of the season.

Expensive premiums and high ownership players seem to enjoy doing naff all in DGWs.

Yeah i agree. I was surprised a couple of weeks ago when they met to discuss it and STILL said 'yeah give them two games, what could go wrong?'. PL games were dropping like flies as it was, more have followed, you'd think the chance to reduce the calendar a bit more would've been sensible.

      2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years

Yeah the fact they discussed it but never went any further is really odd, especially as postponements were still happening at that stage (as they are now). Maybe some of the clubs involved didn't like the idea of it but I can't imagine that was really the case.

It's likely that the EFL 72 have some say still into the Carabo Cup.

I imagine for gate revenue a home and away Semi Final suits a majority of these clubs.

There could be a rule that an all Premier League semi final means a one off, neutral venue match but League clubs will be reluctant to set a precedent and lose more control over precious revenues.

The Premier League dominates as it is. There's life below the top 20 in the pyramid.

Yeah good points to be fair. I guess I just mean with the teams left in the tournament I would have thought in this immediate scenario they would think it was the sensible choice but you're right about precedent, the PL has already set some dubious precedents with regards to postponements, no need to spread thar further through the system.

If the League Cup semi final doesn't happen on Thursday evening that means it is less likely for a Liverpool dgw22....

Which may well benefit those who don't mind holding Salah.

Also benefits FH22 on first glance with less fixtures to target.

      1. Layifioren

Less Liverpool games in gw22 means you don't miss so many opportunities with other players to return points in place.

A dgw22 for Liverpool means holding Salah is a greater opportunity cost.

        2. Black Knights
          • 12 Years

Because he'll be missing fewer league games, so sellers won't gain as much on holders.

FH22 benefits in that case also over BB22, since every man and his dog has TAA + Jota. Yet, if Liverpool are in doubt now, other teams are probably going to be also, so BB is perhaps just too risky now.

What's the maximum hit you would justify to play bench boost.

Can get to a team I'd be happy with (assuming doubles go as planned) taking a -8/-12. Am I eating onto my points too much, simply to get 15 players?

    1. Debauchy
      • 11 Years
      2 years, 3 months ago

depends really , depends on team structure and what you want going forward. A -8 to benefit in the dgw and for players you want going forward is cheap at the price

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years
        2 years, 3 months ago

Basically this. If you're bringing in players at average teams with poor fixture runs after the DGW I would steer clear, but if you're bringing in players with the long-term in view then it can be worth it.

    2. TheBiffas

I never understood this logic personally, but a lot of people here / in the FPL community seem to think you have to have a proper build plan to your team focused around the chip itself. Over the years I've had a good few (SGW) weeks where I felt like the idea of using BB made more sense then than in a DGW and it's generally turned out to be the way.

            This is my preferred approach.

Gw10 and 11 would have worked for me.

It depends who you're buying. If you're buying long term pieces then -8 or even -12 is fine.

If you're buying the Craig Dawson's of this world just to BB then no.

In a DGW -4, absolutely not more than -8

It’s a chip that rarely delivers much and rotation regularly happens anyway so you’re lucky to get 5-6 ‘extra’ bench starts for DGW for often cheap players.

5-6 performances translates into maybe 10-20 points. Add in a -8 or above and you’re gambling an awful lot to get 3-4 more points.

I have once used dgw to get good players (Lanzini, sadly not also this year) long term and got rid of all deadwood (-20). Lanzini alone got 13 points(?) and I got huge green arrow and good team going forward. However -16 would have been best solution with hindsight. So there is no exact number, it depends on whether team gets better long term or not.

Team lit up like a Christmas tree with these flags… other than Salah out (for who?), what would you target here with 1FT 0 ITB?

    Ramsdale (Foster*)
    TAA Cancelo Reguilon (James* Livramento*)
    Salah** Foden* Jota ESR (Gallagher*)
    Dennis DCL Watkins*

Salah to Son and you are fine.

Can solve the James problem the week after.

Foster, Livramento, Gallagher and James on the bench.

Watkins, Foden, Livramento and Gallagher should all be available for the next GW

If you have both FH:s left, use the first one now. Then just bench Salah.

Everton's first team looks good on paper. The backups aren't so good

    Pickford
    Patterson Mina Keane Mykolenko
    Gomes Doucoure Allan
    Gray DCL Richarlison

    Begovic
    Kenny Holgate Godfrey Nkounkou
    Gbamin Davies Delph
    Townsend Rondon Iwobi

    Backups: Lonergan, Branthwaite, Gordon, Simms

Sell / Let go: Digne, Coleman, Tosun, Sigurdsson

Well, whatever about the Arsenal game, the Shrewsbury game should not be off. Liverpool would have played a complete second-string anyway

This is interesting where it becomes about integrity of competitions and actual squad size and loan recall options etc.

        There's nothing whatever about it.

If these games get postponed it seriously impacts Liverpool and Arsenal's potential DGWs in GW22.

Covid-19 means fewer gw22 fixtures also means fh22 more useful.

DDG and CR7 to Pickford and DCL.

      No I'm joking.
Get Sa and Kane in a hokey cokey move....

You're pretty well set otherwise. Give it a week you'll have some red flags and dgw options.
