Southampton v Brentford team news: Mbeumo returns, Broja leads line

Double Gameweek 21 continues at St Mary’s Stadium this evening, with Southampton hosting Brentford at 19:45 GMT.

Ralph Hasenhuttl makes five changes from Gameweek 20, in a system that could be a 3-4-3 or 4-2-2-2, with centre-backs Lyanco, Jan Bednarek and Mohammed Salisu all named in the starting XI.

Further forward, Armando Broja – owned by 6.5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers – leads the line, with Nathan Redmond and Nathan Tella the other attacking options to feature.

Che Adams returns as a substitute following a positive Covid test, though the Saints are without the likes of Moussa Djenepo, Tino Livramento, Alex McCarthy, Yan Valery and Kyle Walker-Peters

“This season it’s been a much better performance at home. We are stronger here and want to keep that going. We need every point and to get something against every team is tough for us, but we are prepared for it. Although we have a few injured, suspended or with Covid, we still have a strong side and will do everything for a win” – Ralph Hasenhuttl on tonight’s match

As for Brentford, they make four changes from their 2-1 win over Aston Villa, with Kristoffer Ajer, Vitaly Janelt, Shandon Baptiste and Bryan Mbeumo replacing Mads Bech Sorensen, Mathias Jensen, Frank Onyeka and Yoane Wissa.

DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 21 LINE-UPS

Southampton XI: Forster, Lyanco, Bednarek, Salisu, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Diallo, Perraud, Redmond, Tella, Broja

Subs: Caballero, Stephens, Simeu, Small, Chauke, Long, A Armstrong, Adams, S Armstrong

Brentford XI: Fernandez, Ajer, Jansson, Pinnock, Roerslev, Janelt, Norgaard, Baptiste, Canos, Mbeumo, Toney

Subs: Lossl, Thompson, Jensen, Forss, Wissa, Ghoddos, Bidstrup, Bech Sorensen, Stevens

Wood had a release clause??? So Burnley couldn’t stop him from going to relegation rivals? Madness even though he’s a 5 goal a season player…

Yes, because performance over the first 1/2 season overshadows that of the past four years.

Relatively cheap, but who would have expected anyone to activate the clause? Also a good retirement fund booster for Wood.

But they’re disabling a relegation rival of their best striker in the deal too. That will also have been in their plans.

Hi all, been out of the loop since this never-ending GW started, would appreciate some advice on the proposed move:

    De Gea
    TAA -
Rüdiger - Reguilón
    Jota - Bowen - Raphinha - Gray
    Ronaldo - Antonio - Watkins

    (Ramsdale) - Bernardo - Cancelo - Livramento) - 2 FT - 2 FHs in hand

Have exact cash for Antonio + Watkins + Bernardo —> Kane + Dennis + Lennon (Burnley DGW) for -4. Yay or nay?

Would you also want him if he doesn't have a double? Right now I'm waiting until after the pressers and if possible a few more hours before the deadline to make my transfers. It's not the time to get 0.1 more of a transfer, I'll have Son too and I'll wait until Friday before I make my move

If the Premier League hadn't stalled the takeover for 16 months, Newcastle's new owners would be in their 4th transfer window now. As it is, most Newcastle fans accept that they are in a poor position and this season is a scrap to try and stay up. The hope is that there is a better future, which they never had with Ashley.

He literally has a better goals to games ratio over a large sample size though. The point is he has goals in him. He isn’t amazing, but represents good business in the situation, for the reasons I listed below. He won’t be starting if Newcastle stay up and he might not even be starting in 8 weeks once Wilson returns.

It was clutching at straws from your part. Time will only tell, you think it's a good signing - maybe it will be... I think it's a backwards move for Newcastle.

Backwards from what? Atm we don’t have a fit striker. It’s a short term signing to keep them up, he isn’t there as the future of the club lol. If he scores 6-7 goals and Newcastle finish 17th because of it it’s good business.

Out of interest who do you think Newcastle should have signed up top instead?

Apparently Wood was only 2nd Choice. Big Dom Solanke turned them down, as he wants Premiership football next season.

Took Fenway ten years to win a title, after initially splurging on the likes of Andy Carroll, Downing, Enrique and Charlie Adams, with a manager completely out of his era.

It's 20 million, newcastle need a goal scorer and have gained one of only 6 players to score more than 10 goals a season for the last 4 seasons, staying up is worth in excess of 200 million to the club so it makes sense financially, Eddie Howe doesn't have total/final say on transfers and a relegation rival has been weakened.

Apart from that you're spot on though

Pukki for 3 million would have been much better buy.

I'm getting tempted by a short term punt on Minamino. £5.1m and I think he gets minutes whilst Salah and Mane are missing.

Anyone temped? Or have I lost the plot?

You’ve lost the plot. Wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t even start

Coutinho looks like a great edition to Villa mid. Think it will enable Buendia to flourish.

Worth putting him in or do we think he’ll need time to settle?

Coutinho will take Buendia’s place. Would wait and see

Buendia will be flourishing on the bench if Coutinho starts well.

I see him similar to DCL. Give him some time to settle (or returnfor DCL) and watch how he plays. Avl are however in a better than Eve, so that might speak to bring him in earlier, but he wasn't that convincing in his last games, so I'll wait

Wait and see, no rush, he could also be the player that's failed in Spain and Germany surrounded by far better players.

Eddie staying at his level...take ASM out of that team and they're probably a worse team than BOU were when in the Prem!

Signing Wood is a 'heads gone' moment for Howe...and that'll also be his punishment from the owners when they're relegated!

Remember when one of Man City's first signings was Craig Bellamy, who was much closer to a 5 goal a season striker than Chris Wood is?

And that was no FFP rules.

Were people seriously expecting Newcastle to do better business than this in their first window?

Come on, it's a terrible signing! He resembles one of those statues on Easter Island, his movement is pretty similar to them too!

Well I guess what they're really buying is Burnley's relegation and a straight fight with Watford for survival.
