Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have plenty of choice for the Gameweek 23 captaincy, and as per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 23 captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Friday’s 18:30 GMT deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

In one of the closest captain polls of the season so far, Kevin De Bruyne (£12.1m) is the current leader, with just over 17% of total votes from our users at the time of writing.

Just behind in second is Watford’s Emmanuel Dennis (£6.1m), who is backed by 15.79%, ahead of his home tie against relegation-threatened Norwich City.

Despite underwhelming in Double Gameweek 22, Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) occupies third place with just over 10%, followed by Raphinha (£6.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£11.7m), with 8.34% and 7.58% respectively.

KEVIN DE BRUYNE

Kevin De Bruyne has now started each of Manchester City’s last six Premier League games going back to mid-December, when he returned from Covid.

During that time, he has featured in midfield rather than as a false nine, producing four goals and an assist, earning 47 FPL points.

However, he’s managed just nine shots in the box over that period, with most of his goal attempts arriving from range (see below), but his creative output remains excellent, having created more chances per 90 minutes than any other player in 2021/22.

Above: Kevin De Bruyne’s xG shot map – last six matches

Above: no player has created more chances per 90 minutes than Kevin De Bruyne this season

As for Man City, Pep Guardiola’s side are seeking their 13th consecutive Premier League victory in Gameweek 23, having scored 34 and conceded only seven in their previous 12 matches, ahead of Saturday evening’s trip to Southampton.

A 3-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ last time out halted a four-game unbeaten run for the Saints, who have lost just one of their 10 Premier League home matches this term.

SOUTHAMPTON AT HOME 2021/22:

Alternative options at City are Phil Foden (£8.0m) and Raheem Sterling (£10.7m), who are compared along with De Bruyne below. If Ralph Hasenhuttl opts for a back-three/five system, however, we could see City’s wingers stay wider in an attempt to stretch the play, which isn’t exactly where we want them from an FPL perspective. That leaves Joao Cancelo (£7.0m), a defender who looks comfortable in all areas of the pitch, with his 11-point return against Chelsea last weekend a timely reminder of his ability to hit double-digit hauls, especially with many ‘free-hitting’ him out of their XI’s.

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 23? 2

Don't think so, Chelsea kept 2 clean sheets against strong Spurs teams in league Cup. Obvs a great come back against Leicester but Spurs were pretty abject until 95th min. Chelsea are looking pretty poor too, mind! Could be another 1pt, could be 15, it's the Alonso way!

    1 FT and 0 ITB

    A - Son > Raph (c)
    B - CR7 > Dennis (c)
    C - Roll FT

    DDG
    TAA - (C)ancelo - Coady
    Jorghino - Jota - Bowen - Maddison
    CR7 - Antonio - King

    Bachman - Lamptey - Son - Dier

A will this give you enough to get salah back?
B you already have king unless they have a dgw is it worth a double up?
C yes if you need to move on a few players next week to fit AFCON players back in.

      Personally i would go (B)

A - I would need to take a hit to get Salah back.
B - Given the lack of strikers I dont mind having 2 Watford and can always bench King until I move him on.

        You'd still go B?

Tough one if you need funds maybe look at wolves defenders like ait nouri or coady but if not robertson. I think both liverpool fullbacks are great in FPL with plenty of double digit hauls. Plus robertson is kind of a differential with him in only around 3% of squads so if your chasing it might be a good shout!!

Like the idea of bringing in KDB (C) this week but very hard to then later fit in Salah alongside him, and if changing then would be before KDB plays either BRE or nor which feels wrong.

Not the best value also. Just go for it with the captain points hopefully covering later hits if needed in full or look at e.g. Sterling / Foden instead?

We can infer from the number of price changes that a lot of people made changes overnight. I suspect we will se a lot of points hits or wildcards (or FHs) played this week if a DGW is announced today.

    1. TheTinman
      • 10 Years
      4 years, 1 day ago

I made my moves last night because the intention was to wildcard if there is an announcement anyway.

So I'm in the same position either way but 0.1m better off. And the players I brought in have very low postponement chance, so only a Friday injury in training could scupper me.

      1. _Make
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 1 day ago

Makes sense. The only reason I would much prefer to WC ahead of 24, at the earliest, is the fact that there will be FA cup games between now and then. Don't want to WC to a new shiny team and have 2-3 of them go down with injuries that are not even FPL-related.

That said, if we get a DGW I might just pull the trigger now.

        1. TheTinman
          • 10 Years
          4 years, 1 day ago

Yes ideally I would do the same.

But with 2x Chelsea defenders, only Cancelo and 0 Villa I would be forced to take a -12 or so this week.

Then there is a lot of my 'okay' players who I would like to move on, such as Gray, Reguillon, DCL etc.

My situation is of course different to others. As a general rule of thumb though I think your comment is valid, a late announcement would benefit those who showed patience 🙂

Aston Villa play Leeds in their scheduled match in GW24. Surely, it is unlikely that their postponed game at Elland Road will be scheduled to take place either as DGW23 or 24?
If there are any extra games during the FAC R4 weekend it is likely to be Burnley v Watford or Villa v Burnley.
If Leeds do have a DGW in 23/24 it will be without Raphinha, who will be away with Brazil.
Likewise, Villa will be without Martinez who will be away with Argentina.

Villa will also be without Coutinho if they have a DGW23/24. He is recalled to be with Brazil.

Any chance for us to know about DGW23 before deadline?

100% chance because if it is after deadline it will be DGW24

Are you sure? Doesn’t seem to be consensus on this point from what I’ve seen

I'm basing it on what Mark has said. Who likely has a very good idea and it is also the most logical decision

Think Ben Crellin has a good idea too and he’s less sure than you are

    Some beautiful fixtures there.
    Good to go?

    Foster
    TAA, Cancelo, Cash
    Foden, Maddison, Jota(c), Bowen
    Dennis, King, Watkins

    Sanchez, White, Son, Livramento

0ft, 6,1 itb (next week straight swap Maddison>Salah)

If DGW's go as rumoured, also gives me 5 doublers

1ft 8.3m in the bank. Any thoughts what to do here or leave the transfer roll over to next week??

    Fernandez
    Cancelo TAA Reguilon Coufal
    Jota Bowen Mount Martinelli
    Ronaldo Dennis

    4m Broja Tsimikas Delph

Mount and Martinelli --> KDB and Coutinho (2.3itb) as a -4.

KDB a good captain option and if it is a dgw Coutinho is a captain option

This would allow: Jota and CR7 --> Salah and Watkins in the near future

(If you wanted to go one step further and take a -8 do the above and then bring in digne/ait nouri for coufal?)
