FPL Begin Releasing Player Prices Via Twitter

There’s nothing quite like a slow reveal to elevate the anticipation. This afternoon, the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) took the decision to tease and tantalise us Fantasy managers, offering a glimpse into what’s to come next season by rolling out three player prices on their official twitter feed:

It started just after midday, with the following tweet…

Ahead of Fantasy Premier League 2012/13 launching later this month, which player values would you most like to know now

An hour later, after a frenzy of requests, our appetites were momentarily sated with the next little titbit of information:

Here are today’s three player values: Eden Hazard (CHE) £9.5m, Pavel Pogrebnyak (RDG) £5m and Park Ji-Sung (QPR) £6m.

You have to give them credit here – it’s a clever little ploy, with the opening line in particular leaving us desperate for more now. After this evening’s tweet (below) we’re eager for further revelations:

Thursday’s player values will include new signings Gylfi Sigurdsson (TOT) and Shinji Kagawa (MUN)

Tomorrow is set to bring more our way, then, ahead of the game’s release sometime in the next week or so, while the prices so far give us plenty to ponder:

Eden Hazard comes in at 9.5 – the same valuation afforded to Juan Mata last season – though his classification, as yet unclear, will be crucial. The Belgian’s former team mate Gervinho arrived as a forward in 2011/12 and both played in the wide areas in Lille’s 4-3-3; the difference is that the Ivorian played on the flank in a 4-3-3 role at Arsenal, whereas Chelsea are set to roll out a 4-2-3-1, meaning Hazard will be utilised as an attacking midfielder next term. Classifying Hazard as a midfielder would clearly be the ideal scenario for Fantasy managers for the upcoming season – the idea of him as a forward holds far less appeal. Relatively speaking, what will today’s news mean for Mata’s price? After accruing 162 points in his debut campaign, you’d expect some sort of rise – if this proves to be the case, Hazard could well pick up plenty more suitors as we look to balance our budgets. Looking at the Sky game, Mata is considerably dearer than Hazard, coming in at 8.9 to the new boy’s 7.7.

Pavel Pogrebnyak’s 5.0 valuation is lower than most had anticipated. The Russian looks nailed-on for Brian McDermott’s promoted side and his exploits with Fulham in the second half of last season suggest he could be something of a bargain. Six goals in 12 games at the Cottage harvested an average of 4.5 points per game in 2011/12 and with game time guaranteed as the target man in a front two, many could be swayed by such a price. The acquisition of Nicky Shorey may also inadvertently boost the Russian’s appeal – Shorey is likely to vie with Ian Harte for starts and, if the latter is not on the pitch, Pogrebnyak may be the next in line for spot-kicks. FPL have certainly been kind to Reading’s new signing in comparison to other Fantasy games – Pogrebnyak’s exploits last time round have earned him a mid-price valuation in the Sky game, at 7.2; only 0.3 less than Djibril Cisse, for example.

A cost of 6.0 for Ji-Sung Park was pretty much as anticipated. The South Korean shifts from his previous FPL starting price of 7.0 at United and represents a drop in faith in QPR’s midfield assets last term – the likes of Joey Barton and Adel Taarabt both finished last term with a valuation of less than 6.0. Taken in context, though, it asks questions of Taarabt’s likely price this time round – the Moroccan picked up attacking returns in four of his last five home games and began to find his feet as the season drew to a close. A similar valuation is likely to see him favoured over Park by many, with set-piece duties also in his locker – while the former United man is reasonably priced, he may still struggle to pick up interest. Judging by the Sky game, not much separates them; Park is 4.8 to Taarabt’s 5.2, while Barton comes in at 5.0.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

will nelson 100% play? hes pretty old and injury prone.. as you only get 30 for whole season wasting them on taking in/out defenders is annoying. Lamps will be rotated. HBA occasionally rested, Nolan not sure about, hazard untested. Don't mean to be mean or anything just observations. Its not like the FPL where you get subs and free transfers/hits to compensate for players not playing, you pretty much have to pick players that will 100% play

I like it, Nelson has to be a risk but you have preseason to see how they line up. Everyone else I would expect to be week in week out players on the whole.

Very good team. Why Nelsen tho? Surely Fabio would be a better pick, and get Lampard out for Bale if you can afford him

But great up front and strong defence to compensate.

Impossible to be perfect in all areas for the budget.

Solid. Harte needs to go - will be rotated with Shorey. Fabio is a decent pick if budget allows. Personally im going for lucas over lallana as a budget midfielder - he is virtually guaranteed 6 points a game due to the bonus points rules. Even with a fair few yellows he will score around 200 points for the season - the same amount as Dempsey last year!

For the same reasoning im going for Song over HBA. He will get a few assists too and could be the top scoring midfielder this season I reckon.

I need to find an easier way to look at 60+ completed passes per game and 4+ successful tackles per week. In members you have to custom set for each week. Very time consuming, does anyone know a place to find this? I made it through week 4 on Lucas and he only accumulated 1bp total (tackles) before I gave up 🙁

You can sort players by each category so its really easy to see who to pick - for me the stand out options are Song, Lucas, Allen and perhaps Wilshere (if he plays a deeper role alongside Song like he did when Fabregas and Nasri were there). Ignore the swansea defenders - wont get the passing bonus now Rogers has left imo, but liverpool defence could be golden after their schedule clears up.

No prob. Out of interest what formation are u thinking of going with? I was all set on 4-3-3 due to strikers outscoring defenders and midfielders so heavily last season, but this new bonus point system has got me thinking 3-5-2 is the way to go

Absolutely. I would much prefer to pay the extra 0.5m and have somebody that plays. Having said that, I would happily downgrade to a ferguson IF it meant fitting in my perfect team.

Having said that, the man himself is likely to get much more game time this season. We will need to use a lot of our youngsters, and he looked really good in his brief cameos at the end of the season. I saw a video of us in pre season training and he still looks like a 12 year old boy. He actually looks younger and smaller than he did last season. If that's possible?

          Here is my thinking:

Last season, I played 3 4 3 nearly the entire season. I did not go with the Ferguson option. I pretty much stuck with Moses all season. For the most of the season, he sat on my bench and did not produce very much. When he did get hot, his points were wasted.

However, when faced with injury and he was my auto sub that i could count on to at least start and get 2 points.

On 19 occaisions 1 bench player out scored a starter by more than 3 points
On 4 occaisions 2 bench players out scored a starter by more than 3 points
On 1 occaision all 3 bench players out scored a starter by more than 3 points
Total of 24 times i had points wasted on my bench when i could have spent that 1 million elsewhere.

I think i might move to the 4.0 midfield option once the season gets rolling around GW3/4

            I'm with you

I played to safe at the start of last season and it cost me an absolute plethora of points, the only thing that saved me was being so awesome at the end and saving my wildcard

take reasonable risks do transfers at the start and cheap it up, 2 wildcards easy to change around these games nowadays

            if there's a 4.0 get em 100%

Doubt there will be though. The general consensus is that his price was a mistake. Otherwise it was very strange (and a bit mean) to have one player 0.5m less than the next cheapest!!

But Moses was 5m, so not far from mid priced. A 4.5m would do the same job as you want ferguson for. Better in fact (hence the extra 0.5m). You would never choose to play him, but if he is called upon, at least he should get you at least 2pts.

Probably right. This is for the Telegraph game so no subs, i.e. essential to have 100% starters. Maybe go with Huth instead. What you reckon to this lot?

        Vorm (3.3)
        Vidic (4.5), Vertonghen (3.9), Huth (3.3)
        Dempsey (4.3), Sess (4.0), Siggy (4.0), Arteta (3.6)
        Rooney (6.8), Aguero (6.7), Adebayor (5.6)

I want all 100% starters - main concerns probably the 2 spuds.

Not nailed on at all. I think it depends what game you're playing. Im having him in Sky and FPL due to the double gameweek and Mata likely to be rested due to Olympics. Plan would be to get bale or siggy in for him in week 2.

If barfa carries on his form from the run in into the new season then he should be up there. Remember that he played less than half a season last year. He should be playing OOP for a lot of it as he is bound to be classed as a midfielder but should play a lot on the right of a front 3. Cheap in the sky game two. Bizarrely 2 mill cheaper than Cabeye!! I know that they give points for passes and tackles, but surely barfas potential for goals and assists beats cabeyes passing and tackling??

Barfa will be high scoring no doubt. Cant see him outscoring any of the top 5 tho. As for the Sky game, yes I agree he will outscore Cabaye easily. Mainly due to the fact Cabaye's average tackles per game and completed passes last season were quite a bit below the required level to get bonus points. Song and Lucas will shine in the Sky game - I picked Song over HBA

Hmm, that'd probably reduce his value a bit, although I'm guessing he'd still start most games, alongside Suarez and in behind either Carroll (if he stays) or Borini (if he comes) in a 4-3-3 formation. Also, 4.3m is just the wrong price for Dempsey when you consider he was the top scorer last season and Silva, Mata and Bale are 6.0m, 5.8m and 5.5m respectively.

Alot of players in my MLs only play for the H2Hs as they're are a bit casual so won't win the main league.
We have pints on each game every week for pub bragging rights and banter, without the H2Hs the casuals simply won't play.

Fpl have just tweeted that goalkeepers get 5pt for a clean sheet. Is that an error or our first rule change?

Are people actually whipping themselves up into a frenzy because 3 player prices have been released?

It's complete junk information without the rest of the player price list to put them in context. Is Hazard worth getting at 9.5? Surely that depends on what his 'peers' are priced at and what bargains you can pick up in other areas? In isolation these three pieces of information are utterly pointless.

It smacks of desperation from FPL to me. Not impressed.

He's probably worth a dabble GW1 at that price and is cheap enough to leave in GW3 if you need the transfers elsewhere.

I followed them because of the prices.

Certainly helped generate more followers. Got more then a fair share of RMT's that tweet, and an article on FFS.
