Tuesday was a busy day at Swansea City. Just hours after announcing Jose Manuel Flores as the first transfer of the Michael Laudrup regime, the Welsh club revealed they had also acquired the services of attacking midfielder Jonathan De Guzman. The 24-year-old arrives on a season-long loan deal from Spanish side Villarreal, with an option to make the move permanent.

De Guzman is primed to fill the vacancy created by the end of Gylfi Sigurdsson’s loan spell and has the chance to reunite with Laudrup, having played under the Dane at Mallorca a couple of season ago – a factor he admitted was key to the decision:

Once the opportunity came along to join Swansea and Michael Laudrup it was a done deal. I didn’t have to think twice about it. I’m grateful for the opportunity and grateful that the manager has acknowledged me as a player. I’m fortunate that I will be working under a good coach at Swansea who lets you be free and allows you to do what you do best. I like to attack as a midfielder, box to box, and hopefully I can add my share of goals along the way.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, De Guzman left his home country Canada at the age of 12 to join the youth set-up at Dutch club Feyenoord. De Guzman was not allowed to appear for the first-team until the age of 18 and less than a week after that milestone birthday, he made his debut in September 2005. Despite his young age, he became an established figure in the Feyenoord first-team and his first three seasons at the club saw him make 94 appearances, scoring 20 goals and assisting a further 20. The following two campaigns were plagued with injury, however; De Guzman featured just 15 times between 2008-10, scoring three times and providing a pair of assists. Available on a free transfer, he moved to Mallorca to team up with Laudrup for the first time.

Handed a role behind a lone forward in Laudrup’s 4-2-3-1, De Guzman flourished despite his side’s poor campaign – he featured 33 times, scoring five and assisting four goals as Mallorca finished just one place above the relegation places. The following year he was snapped up by Villarreal for €8.5m but a change of manager midway through the season resulted in his game time rapidly diminishing – De Guzman ended up with just a single assist to show from his 19 appearances as the Yellow Submarine dropped out of La Liga.

The Prospects

With regards to De Guzman’s potential, much will depend on Laudrup’s ability to adapt his brand of football to the Premier League – though there’s no question the omens look good. His preferred style and team shape are similar to Brendan Rodgers’, suggesting a continuation of last season’s form may well be on the cards, with little tinkering required. Laudrup has great faith in De Guzman’s abilities and is likely to install him as a key figure within the first-team set-up; the manager explained the reasoning behind his latest acquisition to the Swansea website earlier:

He receives and moves the ball, can play in small spaces, so I think he will fit in perfectly with this team. He will suit the style here because he is used to that kind of football. He is an offensive player, but he can also play anywhere in midfield which can give you some alternatives.

De Guzman can be expected to be priced relatively low across the Fantasy games; bearing in mind Gylfi Sigurdsson was valued at 5.0 by Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in the previous campaign, there’d be no surprise to see the new boy come in at 5.5 – 6.0, now that the Swans have established themselves in the top-flight. He’s also likely to get his fair share of set-pieces; De Guzman took the vast majority of free-kicks and corners under Laudrup at Mallorca – a factor which will certainly further his appeal when assessing cut-price options for our Fantasy squads.

There’s little doubt De Guzman has a tough task ahead of him in the eyes of many Fantasy managers; living up to the exploits of Sigurdsson as Swansea’s chief creator is no easy feat but a kind opening schedule could well see him flourish. Laudrup’s men have three home clashes in the first five Gameweeks (WHM, SUN, EVE) and with trips to QPR and Villa also on the agenda, he’s set to be handed plenty opportunity to show whether he’s capable of stepping into Gylfi’s shoes in the campaign ahead.

I think Swansea will carry on where they left off. The style of play is ingrained in the club, not just what manager is there. It all started with Martinez and hasn't changed since. It's the whole reason why they could climb the leagues the way they have

That being said, 14 clean sheets might be a lot to ask for again

Really? They've lost their manager, their best attacking player and their best defender. Why do you think they will improve? It's hardly like Laudrup has a great record either.

Well, I don't agree. Laudrup is fine, imo. Furthermore, he is in the all-embracing Swansea set up. I don't necessarily think that Caulker was their best defender.

Siggurdsson - yes. But only because of Britton.

If there ratio of home CS to away CS stays as last year then 5mil isn't too bad to stomach in a home rotation pair. I'm thinking Naylor may still come in at 4.5

No probably not, but they were stupidly good value last year. All depends on prices - I think De Guzman and Flores, as unproven in the Prem, will be tough for me to invest at 5.5 or 5.0 respectively but at 5.0 and 4.5 then they'd sound decent enough.

That was so long ago, I line in Palma and he was decent, the team had been pillaged and players sold. Then the Mallorquins had their little bloodless coup to get rid of Laudrup. It´s weird, Swansea will have three straight managers that speak fluent Spanish: Martinez, Rodgers and Laudrup.

    Morning All,

Pre-Pre Season FPL training...stretching out the old brain hammy here...have been checking out the newly promoted teams and wanted to check with you guys on some assumptions I've made and for any extra insight that may be of value (especially if I'm wrong on the following points):

Southampton - Kinda like Swansea in a way...lot's of possession, good home defense.
    Q:
    1. Am I to assume they may have a similar season to Swansea (at least in terms of style) and who would be their main playmaker then?
    2. Can they emulate Swansea in terms of their home defense?

Reading - Kinda like an Everton meets Norwich...lot's of player rotation and slow starters to a season (with bad away form - as a side dish).
    Q:
    1. Can I assume that reading has a poor defense, perhaps in the search of goals?
    2. Are they likely to attack from wide using their wingers and if so, are their wingbacks dangerous enough?

West Ham - Lost few games but conceded unnecessary goals. They are a very recent premier league team so have some experience going into the season.
    Q:
    1. With them leaking silly goals would it perhaps be better to look at their attack more?
    2. Are we all expecting a tighter ship when it comes to the back four?
    3. Noble doesn't strike me as FPL candidate but his season just past suggests otherwise. Are you guys thinking of him as an option or would Nolan be an safer bet?

Feel free to answer some, one or none...just don't know 2/3 of the teams and need a more "local" opinion..

    Thanks in advance...

As a Saints fan, I don't think we'll be as good at the back as Swansea were last year but still expect a fair share of CS at home. We'll certainly score more goals than Swansea did.

Lambert, Lallana and Danny Fox (who's on set pieces from LB) - if we don't sign this Buttner from Vitesse - are the best fantasy prospects IMO.

The promoted teams tend to start well as their opponents dont have much info about how they play. West ham may be the exception to that rule as everybody knows them very well, but likewise they shouldnt trail off towards the end either.

Of the 3, I think Reading had the best defence last season.

And still not decided on the Noble-Nolan conundrum.

@Flynn...Yo dude, howzit! Glad to be back in the game...took a break from everything feeling fresh and excited for the season ahead. Yip...totally mucked that comment up about the defence...are they slow starters though with lots of rotation?

@Benali...thanks for pointing Danny Fox out to me...not sure how I missed him. Lambert looks the business if stats are anything to go by...good luck for your team...hope their Swansea Version 2.0..haha...not comparing...just thinking in terms of FPL...

Noble & Tomkins with an eye on Matty Taylor if he's classed as a defender.

Didn't Taylor's FPL classification change from def to mid when he was with Pompey in the Prem?

He'd be straight in my team if listed as a defender though.

I might be taking a sneaky punt on Gareth McCleary of Reading. I'm a Forest fan and he was our best player by a mile last season. Like you said reading attacking down the wings, he has pace to burn, two good feet and started to add goals to his game. Can see him coming in 4.5

@Doosra...aaaa...I thought that was him but as you noted, Midfielder now playing defense. Ok cool...is he any good back there though? Like do you think he'll make that position his this season?

@ In Tommy...riiiight...didn't consider that. I figured cos they bought him and he was such a "big" player before that it meant he had a spot to start with. Will have to keep an eye on him then. Shot!

    Sky game

Seems to me the cost of players is pretty much directly linked to their points total from last year. With the addition of pass and tackle points this year, surely this makes defs and particularly mids better value than fwds or keepers? Also players who didn't play a full season, Siggy, Pienaar etc should be great value.

Very close to the truth I suspect. The verdict will be 'Terry is not a racist but said a racist comment'. Just like the Suarez case. In which case, eight match ban, here we come.....

If they say he is 'racist' he will sue and will win........various shades of grey, I believe...

I think he will. He's admitted to what many think he said, and I don't think anyone will buy the 'just repeating sarcastically what I thought I heard' story. And if so the PL must treat him the same way as Suarez or they'll be accused of double-standards.
