Tuesday was a busy day at Swansea City. Just hours after announcing Jose Manuel Flores as the first transfer of the Michael Laudrup regime, the Welsh club revealed they had also acquired the services of attacking midfielder Jonathan De Guzman. The 24-year-old arrives on a season-long loan deal from Spanish side Villarreal, with an option to make the move permanent.

De Guzman is primed to fill the vacancy created by the end of Gylfi Sigurdsson’s loan spell and has the chance to reunite with Laudrup, having played under the Dane at Mallorca a couple of season ago – a factor he admitted was key to the decision:

Once the opportunity came along to join Swansea and Michael Laudrup it was a done deal. I didn’t have to think twice about it. I’m grateful for the opportunity and grateful that the manager has acknowledged me as a player. I’m fortunate that I will be working under a good coach at Swansea who lets you be free and allows you to do what you do best. I like to attack as a midfielder, box to box, and hopefully I can add my share of goals along the way.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, De Guzman left his home country Canada at the age of 12 to join the youth set-up at Dutch club Feyenoord. De Guzman was not allowed to appear for the first-team until the age of 18 and less than a week after that milestone birthday, he made his debut in September 2005. Despite his young age, he became an established figure in the Feyenoord first-team and his first three seasons at the club saw him make 94 appearances, scoring 20 goals and assisting a further 20. The following two campaigns were plagued with injury, however; De Guzman featured just 15 times between 2008-10, scoring three times and providing a pair of assists. Available on a free transfer, he moved to Mallorca to team up with Laudrup for the first time.

Handed a role behind a lone forward in Laudrup’s 4-2-3-1, De Guzman flourished despite his side’s poor campaign – he featured 33 times, scoring five and assisting four goals as Mallorca finished just one place above the relegation places. The following year he was snapped up by Villarreal for €8.5m but a change of manager midway through the season resulted in his game time rapidly diminishing – De Guzman ended up with just a single assist to show from his 19 appearances as the Yellow Submarine dropped out of La Liga.

The Prospects

With regards to De Guzman’s potential, much will depend on Laudrup’s ability to adapt his brand of football to the Premier League – though there’s no question the omens look good. His preferred style and team shape are similar to Brendan Rodgers’, suggesting a continuation of last season’s form may well be on the cards, with little tinkering required. Laudrup has great faith in De Guzman’s abilities and is likely to install him as a key figure within the first-team set-up; the manager explained the reasoning behind his latest acquisition to the Swansea website earlier:

He receives and moves the ball, can play in small spaces, so I think he will fit in perfectly with this team. He will suit the style here because he is used to that kind of football. He is an offensive player, but he can also play anywhere in midfield which can give you some alternatives.

De Guzman can be expected to be priced relatively low across the Fantasy games; bearing in mind Gylfi Sigurdsson was valued at 5.0 by Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in the previous campaign, there’d be no surprise to see the new boy come in at 5.5 – 6.0, now that the Swans have established themselves in the top-flight. He’s also likely to get his fair share of set-pieces; De Guzman took the vast majority of free-kicks and corners under Laudrup at Mallorca – a factor which will certainly further his appeal when assessing cut-price options for our Fantasy squads.

There’s little doubt De Guzman has a tough task ahead of him in the eyes of many Fantasy managers; living up to the exploits of Sigurdsson as Swansea’s chief creator is no easy feat but a kind opening schedule could well see him flourish. Laudrup’s men have three home clashes in the first five Gameweeks (WHM, SUN, EVE) and with trips to QPR and Villa also on the agenda, he’s set to be handed plenty opportunity to show whether he’s capable of stepping into Gylfi’s shoes in the campaign ahead.

No, I think the consensus is start of next week. Some prices have started to be released in dribs though - Park 6.0m, Hazard 9.5m, Pogrebnyak 5.0m with Sigurdsson & Kagawa later today.

      Enjoy your holiday.

Just a thought on Spurs defence under AVB. It seems to be assumed that we will concede more under AVB as Chelsea did. However his high line approach under Porto worked magnificently - they conceded 13 goals in the whole season.

Now you can say the Premiership isn't the same as the Premiera Liga and obviously you'd be correct but at the same time the Spurs back line is actually suited to playing this approach where Chelsea's wasn't. If, and that's a large if, AVB implements the high line correctly it could actually see Spurs defensive returns improve rather than diminish.

Especially as AVB never really settled on a DM at Chelsea - whereas there is no dispute that Parker is the main man for Spurs in that position.

I think Spurs could have a great defence this season if Vertonghen adapts well and they don't have so many injury problems as last season.

Agreed, even Huddlestone could be looking to compete in that position if he can stay injury free but think Parker starts the season as the main man.

Could happen. Really dont see it tho, Redknapp to AVB is a big step down imo. Losing modric will be huge - even if you get mountinho he has a lot to live up to. Playing a high line in the PL is just too dangerous unless u dominate possession a lot, something which you will struggle with without modric.

So Vertonghen passes medical and becomes their second major signing.

Spurs might lose Modric and VDV, but they're still shaping up to be a really strong team again this season, especially if they are able to bring Moutinho in to replace Modric, should he leave.

I like the fact that it's no longer a "Big 4" - I remember a few years ago when nobody could see how Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool would ever not finish as the top 4, though not necessarily in that order. I expect the fight for top 4 to be even tighter this year with, as things stand, Man Utd and Arsenal arguably weaker (transfers pending), Chelsea & Liverpool presumably stronger and Newcastle (ok, wishful thinking) seemingly consolidating on what we've got. If Everton get off to any sort of half-decent start to the season then perhaps even they can be in the mix, as they were a few seasons ago?

The 2 lads in your grav being a year older has to be a factor for starters. I think Kagawa will have an impact but is likely to need time to settle.

It seems to me that Man Utd are crying out for (at least 1) centre midfielder. A box to box player who chips in with a few goals. I've never rated Anderson, Cleverly looked out of place when I saw him last season and I wouldn't count on Fletcher next season, which just leaves Carrick.

I don't think Man Utd have a settled back 4 and that would be a concern too - correct me if I'm wrong though.

We do need a CM, agreed. But we needed that last season. We have a few areas we need to address but we arent weaker than last season. Giggs had very little impact last season and him and Park in fact cost us in crucial games. Scholes is scholes, impossible to replace but his role nowadays doesnt really require much running so he should replicate last season's performances. Defence will be the same overall - de gea stronger, evra weaker, rafael/jones/smalling/evans stonger, ferdy weaker, vidic back is massive.

Agree that Vidic back is a huge plus. He has a real aura about him and it rubs off on other players.

I just wonder if Scholes will have the same impact over the course of a full season as he had over half the season... can he start 20-25 games? Time will tell there I suppose. Carrick and Scholes is a great MF pairing if Man Utd have the ball but I worry for them in games (such as Bilbao x 2) when they are overrun by quick passing in the middle of the park.

I like Baines & Kagawa but I can't help but feel SAF is strengthening the wrong areas unless he has something up his sleeve. How do you think Kagawa will fit in?

Giggs was a bit part player last season anyway, and will get even less game time. He got older but was still playing in his fair share of the big games, but it won't be the case this time. He was poor last season, and we rarely rely on him anyway these days. I'm confident we'll buy a CM who will play alongside Carrick. Scholes is still good enough to play in the games outside the top 6 and even some against them. He won't play every week so it's not an issue. Cleverley was injured an awful lot last season, but in the beginning we were playing some good stuff with him in the team and that gives me enough confidence that if he can stay fit, we'll be able to use him to good effect. I can't see how we've become weaker tbh. Kagawa is a massive signing, as you say he'll need time to settle, but the real quality players will be okay and he's one of them. We've got so many options in attack now. Valencia was injured for a large proportion too. Also keeping more cleansheets than City with our best defender out for the majority of the season can only be encouraging, but ofcourse we have to see if he'll return to the same world class level.

Yeah we'll see ... just speaking as a neutral but it seems Man Utd don't have a settled back 4 or settled CM pairing. I know there's a lot of games over the course of a season and having a good squad is key but there seems to be a few too many bit-part players to me.

Big season for Cleverly but he really got found out last season on a few occasions.

I do like the attacking options (although still not completely sold on Welbeck).

Yeah, there is not a nailed on back 4 or CM pairing atm. The back 4 wont really matter tho, all the players know each other very well and will be strong even if evans and ferdy are rotated, or jones and rafael. CM is the issue. Im wondering if fergie thinks kagawa can adapt to play there? Him and Jones in the middle could work in the future. Do hope he signs modric or mountinho, but not the end of the world if he doesnt. Cleverley will do well if he gets game time, and I know us UTD fans say this every year but really think anderson will come to the fore.

Yeah Modric looks a better £30m purchase than Lucas Moura for what the team needs to me, but then again I haven't seen Moura play.

Did you rate Jones in CM? Thought he looked a little out of his depth... good at surging forward but looked a bit clumsy and not the greatest passer of the ball.

I think Anderson's problem is his attitude. Can see him moving to Athletico Madrid (or similar) next summer for about £8m after flirting with the first team for a while, then getting caught up in some sort of off the field antics.

Yeah Jones was out of his depth there last season. Has all the ability to be a great player in that position tho, a real box to box midfielder with a great defensive and offensive game.

In an ideal world I would like to see Modric and Strootman as our CM pairing. I can see us getting Strootman, maybe not this window but in the next year or so. Modric is the best available replacement for Scholes, but if we dont get him Moura looks very exciting. Really dont think we can play 4-4-2 with both him and Kagawa in the team tho

What? Young to CM in a ridiculous idea. If you mean AMC, then yes he can play there but Kagawa is here for that. Unlikely we will change from a 4-4-2 tho so there is no AMC position, Kagawa will play out wide. CM - modric/moura/mountinho are coming.

Not sure why it's only Arsenal being ruled out.

Chelsea have lost Drogba. Torres is still unproven is a Chelsea shirt.

Tottenham will lose Modric who is a massive player for them. Granted they've made some good transfers.

Arsenal might lose RVP but they've signed Podolski who has over 100 caps for Germany and scored 18 goals for a poor side in a very good league. Giroud - top scorer in France. Jelevic, Cisse, Ba didn't need time to settle, physical players make the transition easier and Giroud is a physical player.

                  +1

RVP a huge loss, obviously. But agree that Spurs and Chelsea will also be weaker (Chelsea less so if they sign Hulk, which is looking less and less likely). All this really means is that City and United will widen the gap at the top and Liverpool will be thrown into the mix for the remaining 4 places. Newcastle in with a shout too if they keep hold of their players

I wouldn't say all 3 clubs will become weaker and City & Utd will widen the Gap.

Chelsea have still signed Hazard and Marin.

Tottenham have still signed Vertonghan, Sigurdsson and probably Ade.

Arsenal have still signed Giroud, Podolski and will have the likes of Wilshere and Diaby back.

My point is that there isn't a lot between the top clubs but it's only Arsenal being ruled out.

True. If you want budget tho Lucas is the obvious pick - averaged above 5 tackles per game in 10/11 and also above the 60 passes per game mark (which will increase now with Brendan Rogers)

I have them both. 🙂 Going big on tough tacklers in mid, free cash for solid defs and strikers.

                Will probably back-fire. ;(

Im doing the same. Well I have 3 - Song, Lucas and Allen - in a 5 man midfield. Cant see any others that will regularly get the bonus and are nailed on to start (apart from Britton/Wilshere/Arteta/Modric for the passing only), can you?

I had allen confidently to begin with. Starting to worry that its not such a wise pick now as surely the passes per game will fall with the loss of brendan rogers? he was only barely above 60 passes per game last season, whereas carrick was well above and both had similar tackles per game (around 3)

Round, I don't see why SWA will have less of the ball under ML. He's committed to maintaining the very same style of play, and it is the players themselves that 'make it happen' on the pitch. Siggy aside they've, thus far, lost no one, and remember, SWA were doing very well in terms of possession before Siggy signed in Jan.

True, but same stands. Flores in as replacement and Caulker spent some time on the bench without hitting SWA form much. I, personally, think ML is a great signing for SWA, I'd be really chuffed were I a taff fan. 🙂

Yeah they're pretty much as expected I'd say ... Kagawa would be good value but I see him as a bit of a rotation risk - Nani / Young / Valencia or if he is playing behind a striker then Rooney / Welbeck.

Why? Because he is a goal scoring machine.
Put it this way - he will be the same price as Suarez was last year, and cheaper than Carroll and Torres.
