Brendan Rodgersโ€™ first foray into the transfer market as manager of Liverpool has seen the Reds snap up Fabio Borini from Roma for a fee in the region of ยฃ7.9m. The 21-year-old arrives at Anfield on a long-term deal and will work under Rodgers for the third time in his brief career, following spells in the Chelsea youth set-up and on loan at Swansea:

With Maxi Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt both leaving Anfield over the summer and further exits expected, Rodgers is beginning the slow process of shaping the current squad into one of his own making. Despite losing out on the acquisition of Gylfi Sigurdsson, the new Liverpool boss is keenly aware of what is required to fit into his 4-3-3 passing system and was glowing in his assessment of what Borini will bring to Anfield in the season ahead:

Fabio fits the model of what we’re trying to do in building not only for now, but also for the future. He’s a big talent, 21 years of age, he scores goals, and his passion, focus and concentration is a very important part of his game – and a big part of what you want from a player. He’s a multi-functional player who can play in a number of positions and someone I believe has got great growth. He is arguably the best physical player I’ve worked with in terms of his pace, power and fitness.

The Statistics

Borini started out in the Bologna youth system before being snapped up by Chelsea as a 16-year-old in the summer of 2007. His time at Stamford Bridge was almost entirely limited to youth and reserve team appearances โ€“ Borini was the top scorer for the reserves in 2008-09, with 10 goals from 11 games, with the highlight of his time at the London club a five-goal haul in a reserve team win over West Brom. Overall, he made a mere three league appearances before heading off to the Liberty Stadium on loan in March 2011.

His stint in the Swansea first-team was a huge success โ€“ in just nine appearances, Borini scored six times and provided three assists, helping the club to promotion via the Championship play-offs. Purchased by Parma last summer, he was immediately loaned out to fellow Serie A outfit Roma, with an option to make the move permanent. He made 24 appearances last time out in Italyโ€™s top-flight and, on the back of a nine-goal haul, earned a call-up to Italyโ€™s squad for the Euro 2012.

The Prospects

While the move might not mirror the headline-hogging transfer deals of last summer under Kenny Dalglish, Rodgers has proven a canny operator in the transfer market and his time at Swansea demonstrated his ability to produce the goods without busting the budget.

Boriniโ€™s loan time at Swansea showed โ€“ like Sigurdsson โ€“ he has the ability to flourish in Rodgersโ€™ system; his off the ball movement and positioning, allied with an endless energy and eye for goal, is critical to the role of lone frontman in the 4-3-3 and raises huge question marks over Andy Carrollโ€™s future at the club. Carroll thrived at Newcastle on crosses aplenty but this approach is the antithesis of Rodgersโ€™ ethos โ€“ strong aerial ability is far from an essential requirement of a typical forward in the new managerโ€™s system. Yesterdayโ€™s news that the Magpies are keen to bring their former striker back to Tyneside is perhaps little surprise, then.

Liverpool clearly need an upturn in attacking performance after last seasonโ€™s poor campaign; the Merseysiders notched just 47 goals, only three more than Swansea and Boriniโ€™s unselfish style of play should also boost the appeal of the likes of Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan continues to excel for his country but has been unable to replicate his form for the national team at Anfield โ€“ a change in system and style could finally afford him the chance to deliver on his undoubted potential. Bearing in mind that Suarez has been priced at 9.5 by Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Borini should come in at a lesser cost โ€“ a value in the region of 8.5 seems more realistic and, if he can nail down a regular role up front, has the ability to prosper under Rodgersโ€™ guidance and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing mid-price option for the season ahead.

The Redsโ€™ opening schedule will perhaps persuade Fantasy managers to court caution when assessing their options as the season gets underway. Rodgersโ€™ side entertain City, United and Arsenal at Anfield in the first five Gameweeks, while trips to West Brom and Sunderland wonโ€™t be easy โ€“ deferring from any initial investment may be the best answer, then, affording us time to see whether Borini settles quickly on Merseyside before Liverpoolโ€™s fixtures begin to look a little more tempting.

Top top player in Championship over the last few seasons - definitely would be one to watch if his price came in kind.

Snodgrass, Howson? Is it Leeds (East Anglia) now?

Playing solely 4-4-2 should mean less rotation amongst the midfield. Some were well suited to playing up front in the 4-3-3 or attacking from the 4-5-1 so there will be less chances for them in a rigid system.

Still think Stg Pilko will be alright though. He's a proper winger

What everyone's 2nd team? and why?

I have 2, they are Sheffield Wednesday in England and Fiorentina in Italy.

Wednesday came about as my next door neighbours growing up had moved down from Sheffield and were all wednesday fans and i remember watching them the season round their house when they got to both cup finals against Arsenal. then when I went to Uni my best mate there was a Wednesday fan so since then I followed Wendnesday and he followed Chelsea.

Fiorentina is from back when I started watching Italian football in the 90s with BatiGOL and that awesome team with Rui Costa et al. I still follow them and love watchin Jovetic and would love him at chelsea!

Cambridge United, Wigan and Inter Milan

Cambridge United because I lived there from the age of 7 to 18 and went to a game for my birthday in my teens. I can still remember, it was against Brentford in the old Second Division. I think it was a 2-2 draw with Brentford equalizing 6 minutes into stoppage time. From that point I was hooked on disappointment and managed to witness them get relegated twice, lose two Johnstone's Paint Trophy finals and lose every playoff they reached.

Fell in love with Inter in 1999 when they played United over two legs in the Champions League - was the quarter-finals I think. Found myself totally drawn to their flowing, flair-filled style of play - this was back when they had Baggio, Zamorano, Recoba, both Zanettis and Ronaldo for starters. Followed them ever since, with my bond especially tight as until calciopoli they shared that trait with Cambridge United... glorious losers. Oddly I became less dedicated the moment they started winning stuff... it just didn't seem right.

Wigan is a very recent development. On a whim towards the end of last season I took the girlfriend to the most affordable nearby Prem ground - that was Wigan playing at home to Stoke. They were lying near the foot of the table and written off as relegated by many. But they'd just beaten Liverpool 3-2 I think and they had plenty of fighting spirit. I saw them play Stoke off the park to win 2-0 to register their second consecutive win. This was the start of their famous, implausible winning run to survival that included wins over United, Newcastle and Arsenal. I was hooked.

Marko Marin has impressive assist stats. Players from Germany have settled into the premiership quickly aswell. It will be interesting to see where he fits in, could be a cheaper alternative to Hazard/Mata for the DGW.

Surely not going to play very often.

Fatty and Mikel holding. Ramirez, Mata, Hazard behind Torres. Marin will need to be very good to get into the first XI

You reckon? I'd have Ramires and Mikel holding and have Mata, Hazard, Marin as a fluid front 3 behind the striker.

Mata will be at the Olympics and Spain will get to the final anyway so Marin has a decent chance of playing. No doubt they'll sign more players though.

Yeah I wouldn't play fatso, but RDM is a chelsea stooge so will have to play him and Terry until they lose their player power. I also don't think the Olympics is going to have much of an effect on the premier league. Mata hardly kicked a ball at the euros.

Hard to say if he'll suit the premier league, but the german league but he's a quality player so i'd assume yes. Better than Hazard? No idea but i think both will do well.

        season before last Injury

this season just past... coming back from injury into an AVB team playing mainly Romeu/Meireles

When RDM took over his preference was MIkel. I think it was mainly fitness. Ess is not the fast machine he once was but expect him to share this season half with Mikel and occasionally with Ramires.
