The best FPL goalkeepers for a Double Gameweek 37 Free Hit

Five Premier League teams will play twice in Double Gameweek 37 and we’ll be running down a position-by-position guide to the pick of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options in each position, whether you’re using a Free Hit or even just transfers.

All stats from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

JORDAN PICKFORD

Dias + Maddison injury news as Nketiah stars for Arsenal: FPL notes 7

In the last two Gameweeks, Jordan Pickford (£4.8m) has produced 16 FPL points, at least three more than any other ‘keeper at the time of writing.

That’s coincided with an upturn in form for Everton, which has seen a noticeable shift towards a less-possession-based style using five defenders, resulting in back-to-back wins over Chelsea and Leicester City.

The latter victory arrived on the road, but it is on home soil where the Toffees have been at their best under Frank Lampard. Buoyed by their home support, they have managed four wins from seven, conceding just three goals whilst also keeping four clean sheets.

And that’s despite a tricky run of fixtures, which has included games against Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Leicester amongst others.

Lost2

Now, they will fancy their chances of making it three wins in a row at relegated Watford on Wednesday, before successive home clashes against Brentford and Crystal Palace in Double Gameweek 37.

The fixtures in question are far from straightforward: Brentford have lost only two of their last nine Premier League matches, while Palace are undefeated in three. However, both sides rank among the bottom six for non-penalty expected goals (xG) in away matches in 2021/22 (see below).

And for Pickford, that presents an opportunity to build on his recent good form, which has seen him rack up 12 saves and five bonus points in his last two outings.

Above: Brentford and Crystal Palace rank 15th and 17th respectively for non-penalty xG in away matches in 2021/22

EMILIANO MARTINEZ

Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m) has registered two clean sheets in his last three appearances, which brings Aston Villa’s goalkeeper into the frame for Double Gameweek 37.

The Argentinian number one may have struggled to hit the heights of his maiden campaign – when he was FPL’s top-scoring ‘keeper – but has quietly racked up 11 clean sheets in 2021/22, more than any positional rival outside of those playing for teams in the top five:

Now, Martinez has the chance to build on that tally with back-to-back home matches against Crystal Palace and relegation-threatened Burnley, both of whom have struggled to consistently create chances on the road.

The last three games have been positive for Villa, a period which has seen them use a trio of different holding midfielders – Douglas Luiz (£4.3m), Tim Iroegbunam (£4.5m) and Calum Chambers (£4.2m) – as they have allowed just 14 shots in the box.

However, the main issue with Martinez is the appeal of attacking full-backs Matty Cash (£5.3m) and Lucas Digne (£5.0m), who are both cheaper and offer decent points potential at the other end of the pitch.

Saying that, a defensive double-up involving Martinez isn’t completely out of the question, especially given Villa’s improving form.

KASPER SCHMEICHEL

The best FPL goalkeepers for a Gameweek 34 Wildcard

Leicester City have had a difficult time of late and are winless in their seven most recent matches in all competitions.

Their season is now at risk of fizzing out, but a trip to a relegated Watford side who have managed just five goals in their last eight home matches does carry some clean sheet potential.

And if a shut-out can be secured at Vicarage Road, one or two save points for Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) against Chelsea a few days later would ensure a nice haul for the Danish shot-stopper.

Defending corners is an ongoing concern for the Foxes and frequently undoes a lot of their good defensive work, but they could benefit from a more settled backline in the coming matches, free from European distractions.

Schmeichel, meanwhile, looks secure of starts whoever lines up in front of him, and is averaging 4.2 points per match across his last six outings.

VICENTE GUAITA/JACK BUTLAND

The best FPL goalkeepers for a Gameweek 34 Wildcard 2

We’re still waiting for details to emerge on Vicente Guaita’s (£4.6m) absence against Watford in Gameweek 36.

By the time Sunday’s deadline comes around we should know more, but for now, we’ll include reserve ‘keeper Jack Butland (£4.4m) in this section, just in case it proves to be a longer-term issue for the Spaniard.

With six clean sheets in their last 12 matches, Crystal Palace boast one of the division’s form defences.

The expansive style seems to have been reeled in slightly of late, which has in turn provided more defensive stability, although the potential loss of Marc Guehi (£4.5m) after he went off against Watford could cause a bit of disruption.

Now, with trips to Aston Villa and Everton in Double Gameweek 37, there is potential to do well: Steven Gerrard’s side have failed to find the net in three of their last five Villa Park outings, while Everton have managed just four goals in their last six home matches.

OTHERS TO CONSIDER…

Burnley's defence in superb form ahead of Double Gameweek 27

Burnley’s survival hopes took a blow on Saturday, with their defeat to Aston Villa compounded by an injury to centre-half James Tarkowski (£4.9m).

Already without their other first-choice centre-half, Ben Mee (£4.6m), the Clarets now face the prospect of fielding reserve stoppers Kevin Long (£4.0m) and Nathan Collins (£4.3m) together in Gameweek 37 if Tarkowski is ruled out.

As a result, spending £5.3m on Nick Pope may not be the best use of our funds, especially with away trips to Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in store.

Simply put, there are probably better options to target on a Free Hit this week, and even if you do fancy a Burnley clean sheet in one of those aforementioned fixtures, there are defenders available at a substantial saving.

Of the single Gameweek options, it’s likely that Jose Sa (£5.2m) carries the most potential, although if on a Free Hit, it surely makes sense to target one of the above who plays twice.

Usually, at the end of the season goals start flowing and we get some big scoring games. This is usually related to teams having little to play for and relaxing a bit.

PSG will never let him leave. They will lock him in a room and keep writing cheques until he blinks. They are not a football club, they are a state, and they cannot afford to lose their prize asset. They will effectively hold him hostage.

Are you happy with how you played your chips this season?

My First Wildcard in GW7 ruined my squad, and I was forced to play my Second Wildcard early (GW21) to get it back on track. If I had been able to hold on to it for longer then it could have come in very useful later on.
Nailed my Triple Captain in DGW26. Don't know why everyone didn't Triple Captain Salah then.
And happy with my First Free Hit in BGW27.
But I should have played my Bench Boost in DGW28 instead of DGW36.
And I should have played my Second Free Hit in BGW30 instead of GW37.

I'm advocating GW1 BB using a balanced squad with 2 premiums then mini WC GW3 as the cheaper players become clear.

Delighted. Played my 2nd WC early too to deal with the covid-distorted squad & prepare for doubles, hit some huge scores - 152 on TC26 & 147 on BB28 - & rocketed my rank from 819k to 169k in 6 weeks

1 shocking wild card in gw10, one okay in gw31.

TC fine like many, albeit the wild card in Salah dgw worked out well for some too.

I was a strong advocate of FH in bgw30, albeit i know many played it to good effect a few weeks before that with the Coutinho dgw that worked in gw28.

BB37 and FH38 here we come!

I'm not completely happy now but then that's hindsight. It's easy to know now what the best play would have been. I really don't like the chips in FPL. Kind of worries me that they may introduce more to play in each half of the season. They're a bit of a gimmick and can be very luck related.

Also just to note the TC Salah didn't gain as much as most think because a lot of people still captained him, then had another TC score.

Didn't really hear many alternative TC success stories on here. One genius (can't remember the name) TCed Bowen in the WH DGW but aside from that I don't recall any

Yeah I'm not saying Salah TC GW26 was bad lol. I'm saying it wasn't worth as many points as it feels some people suggest. It didn't gain 84 points in most cases - it was worth 28, minus what the managers other TC got.

Oh yeah. So no, I don't think anyone scored better than the 28 points Salah got that week. There was some who captained Salah a couple of weeks later where he got 10 points. So it was "only" 18 points difference for those who didn't TC in GW26.

I think really well generally - BB I only got 14 on but honestly I played it to get rid of it and feel I benefitted more as a result of doing so than if I’d held on to a week where I’d have got 20 or so.

TC was Salah in the obvious week. FH got me 20 plus (one to go next week). No complaints

First WC, FH, TC and BB we’re successes.

FH34 an unmitigated disaster the likes of which I’ve never experienced in FPL. Lost out on between 30-40 points on my original teams. Fell miles behind in ML and seriously contemplated quitting.

Son (c) in 35, plus a so far successful 36, has swung my mood again. Who knows what the last two game weeks have in store for me.

Happy overall, but can we not start out with at least one new chip next season - even switch all three to shake things up a bit?

The bench boost serves no other purpose but to frustrate, and triple cap only ever promises a 20(ish) point advantage, tops - which is easily reversed with just two lucky calls.

The chips aren't deadly enough, and since the extended coverage keeps pandering to the casuals these days there's little space for the rest of us to have fun - bright lads like myself who like to flaunt their success when a canny bit of advance thinking pays off.

I wouldn't want more or more deadly chips. Some of them just increase the luck factor at the expense of skill.

But if they do introduce a new chip, they should drop one of the current ones to make room for it.
I wouldn't mind losing the Bench Boost.
And hopefully there should only be one Free Hit next season.

            The sabotage chip!

You get to make a transfer to your nearest rivals team, and select their captain for 1 week. They don't see the result of this until after the game week has finished.

              Okay.

I was thinking more along the lines of 'All-Out-Unlimited-Defense' chip.

              10 wingbacks, 95k.

There were a bunch of new chips introduced into fantasy IPL this year - all along the lines of double pts for all your bowlers/batters/WKs etc. Different sport obv, but if based on transferable market research, we could see something along those lines - either dispensing with the limits on number of def/mid/fwds for one week and/or doubling their score..?

So the top 4 in the mini league can all sabotage the run away leader at various points they hit second.

Funny but wouldn't be that popular would it.

The amount of moans anyway when Sterling gets sold at the wrong time for the wrong Man City man for example.

We're good enough at sabotaging our own teams without needing mini league rivals to chip in!

Captain and Vice-captain's scores both doubled?
Your highest scoring player becomes captain?
An extra point for every goal, assist or clean sheet?

              Nice.

Defensive Mids: Extra two points for clean sheet.
Penalty goals: 1 point less than open.
              Straight Reds: Transfer freeze.
Captains (actual captains): Rewarded for team win.

Box to box chip. Only your 5 midfielders score, but they score double. Your captain gets 4 x GW score to make up for lack of keeper.

There may need to be an additional wildcard (or unlimited transfers, which is the same thing) next season. Reason being that there will be a 6-week gap between GW16 and GW17.

I have no opinion about what should be decided on but they will for sure do something. My guess is unlimited transfers between GW16 & GW17, so in effect a 3rd wildcard.

I think they should renew the chips a bit more often because they tend to draw patterns to how they are best played. If they appears only once or twice players must more quickly respond to them and play more intuitively.

      Tc Salah 84,
Wc was fine i think, both first and second.
First FH was correct choice but bad result, but still 15 points above my normal team.
BB now is 19 points from first game with all 4 still game left, but minus 12 to get there, so if i will get more than 20 net im happy.
Fh in 38 still to come. Already a success because my team in that week would be awful if i did not have a FH.

Yeah, i was a bit lucky that i was so bisy choppinh wood i forgot the deadline and my bench did awful that week. But it also made me forced to spend transfers on my bench so not sure how i would be if i had pressed the button then.
With my mykolenko and Pickford picks i guess i am fine with how it went.
With Fh in 38 i could go big from gw34 on Leicester, Everton and Villa without worry for 38. And last week so i think i just want to have fun. And with the team i have i must do awfully bad to not do better on a FH..

Generally yes I'm happy with how I played my chips.

WC8 - This is the best 'first' wildcard I think I've ever played. GW7,8,9 I'm convinced is the best time to play the first WC. Not too early that you get on the wrong bandwagons - Kane, Lukaku, Ronaldo strikeforce anyone? But also not too late that you don't t get the team value and fixture upswing from it. I was 11K OR in GW11 so a big win here.

      TC26 - no complaints there!

FH27 was a bit of a disappointment but I think it was still the right decision. I had 10 players and I bought triple Burnley and triple City against Everton. Bad outcome, good decision and I still did better than my original team at least.

BB33 - Strong on paper, but Livra and Broja were not the bench fillers to score well on a BB. Kind of regret this one. Would have preferred to save BB for 36.

WC34 - Good WC. I probably regret not doing it in GW28 instead though since the wildcard's benefits would have lasted longer.

FH37 - We will see how this works! But as a strat, I think WC28, FH33 would have been the best way to navigate this.

      Ideal line this season I think would have been: WC8, TC26, FH27, WC28, BB29
Second FH in either GW30, 33 or 37 depending on when your team needed it.

WC 1: gained almost a 100% rank gain, only to then have trebled my rank a few GWs later to 300k.
WC2 played last week more or less held my rank just outside 100k. Very hard to make ground on the template this season.

TC: Salah 84 points, has probably won me my ML as rival had played it earlier in the season.

FH1, GW19, gained around 50k, was thr start of the slow climb back

FH2 GW 25, another small jump, annoying left 18 points on the bench but scored 70 nonetheless.

BB this GW, currently on a huge 5 points

BB gw1, 11pts bench, 98pts overall, gw rank 510K not bad but i didn't have Bruno that week who scored a hatty which hurt

WC gw4, 77pts, gw rank 418k, and a big green arrow

FH, gw 21, 67pts, gw rank 1.2m and a big red arrow

      WC2, gw 22, 105pts, gw rank 8K, and a huge green arrow

TC Salah, gw26, 116pts, gw rank 1.7m, big red arrow (wish i used FH2)

FH2, gw 34, 77pts, gw rank, 470K and a decent sized green arrow

WC20 was successful I would say. By far the longest I've ever kept my WC and a few weeks after it I was up to 1k OR. TC26 Salah was great as I was glad to not have a TC blank ('ane' curse) like the last 4 seasons. FH27 was meh, got me a reasonable green arrow. I lost ground from GW28-30 so maybe should have used some more chips then. BB36 is a work in progress, 8 points so far with 4 to play. Will FH37 or 38.

So overall I'd say I'm quite happy with my chip usage.

If they were introducing a new chip, I'd like to see something that rewards long-term planners. Something like you play your 'Long-term hero' chip on a player that lasts on him for 10 weeks. For weeks 1-4 his points total is x1.25 or add 1pt, weeks 5-8 his score is x1.5, week 9 it's x1.75 and week 10 his score is doubled. Can't pick him as your captain in that time.

Fh not effective for me this season. TC chip surprisingly been the best. First time with a mega haul out of it, WC & BB been also pretty good.

I'm actually pretty happy with them. I used BB in GW26 and ended up just shy of 150pts which ended up being more / the same as most Salah(TC) that I saw around. TC on Kane in his double v MU+Brighton which I was happy with.

Really though my best chip usage was my second WC in GW25. It completely changed my season and set me up for what looks to be a good finish. I had been hovering around 750k or so for most of the season before that but I took a chance on a good few players that passed the eye-test for me then but that hadn't actually been picking up huge/many returns yet like Olise, Kane, Saka, Pope and got rid of players I thought were not exactly traps but that weren't going to perform as most expected, like Wolves defence. My moves immediately after that (which the WC put me in a good spot to make) helped shoot me up the ranks too (doubling up on Spurs with Son from GW27 onwards, punts on players like Elyounoussi and Burn, etc.). Before this week started I was at 130k (not spectacular compared to most here but good for me especially as I think I tend to go against the grain a bit) and am a bit higher for now (although I expect a drop with so many chips in play) but have my second FH for next week to hopefully keep the good finish going.

      GW12 - WC:
Changed big, scored high and increased TV alot during the international break.

      DGW26 - TC:
Anyone who missed out on those juicy 84 points must feel sorry.

      BGW30 - FH:
77 points and avoided playing with 6 players.

      GW35 - WC:
Preparation for BB, only 43 points.

      DGW36 - BB:
62 points and 15 more players to play. Pretty happy for now.

      DGW37 - FH:
      Aiming for top 50k!

Really happy with my chip strategy this season!

Why are Liverpool never in the running for these major signings like Haaland? Always effing Man City. Liverpool and City are widely regarded now to be the best 2 teams in European football so these players should want to go to Liverpool as well especially with their champions league pedigree but still these players only seem to be interested in Real Madrid, City and PSG and the latter 2 haven't once won the champions league!

Obviously money is a huge factor and City basically just buy the league. However I've read that they are paying only 63m for Haaland which doesn't seem much and surely Liverpool could afford that.

Liverpool now need to sign somebody as good as Haaland to keep up and that player is only really Mbappe but him going to Liverpool will probably never happen.

      Personality driven, IMO.

I call it the 'no ego' policy. Don't think Klopp likes buying players who have an ego and will disrupt team harmony / team working.

Liverpool also like buying PL experience (Salah, Mane, Henderson, Jota, Milner, Robertson, VVD, Ox, Wijnaldum) or players who have shown some potential at weaker clubs in the CL (Firmino, Diaz, Keita, Fabinho).

Man Utd are an example of 'ego' transfers - Pogba, Fernandes and Ronaldo.

It's the wages. He wants something like £500k pw and if Liverpool are too cheap to offer Salah £350k then they certainly won't pay Haaland £500k.

Strange that you focus on ancient European Cup wins. Liverpool have won the PL once in 30 years. Try starting with that.

      1. ZimZalabim

ok if you want to say that the 70s and 80s are "ancient" wins sure.

But 3 finals in the last 5 years or 5 finals in the last 17 years with 2 wins 2 losses and 1 to go, is far superior. Liverpool have gone through a fair amount of bad spells in the prem era and sure they only have 1 title.
City have come to any modicum of relevance only in the past 10-11 years, and thats only domestically they are yet to do anything expect have humiliating knock outs in Europe.

And yet, strangely enough, City & Liverpool are in joint 2nd place in the UEFA 5-year coefficient (Chelsea 4th) and both Chelsea & City are well ahead of Liverpool in the 10-year coefficient (4th, 8th and 14th). Which kind of dismisses your cherry-picking of what counts and what doesn't. 🙄

Two champions league titles were missing from your "ancient" analysis, which as far as English teams go is already tops nevermind that you are making this ridiculous argument just before we go for our third.

There are 3 successful teams in European terms. 1 Spanish, 1 Italian and 1 English. All the other "great" teams pale in comparison

Its been blatantly stated over and over again and I'm sure you are also well aware of why this is the case.

It is wages and wage structure, Liverpool cant afford to buy someone like Haaland, not because of the transfer fee but because of the wages, he is expected to get 375K per week right away which will only rise as the years go on, City have most of their squad on wages in the 250+ range and Liverpool highest current earner is VVD on 200 or 220 per week and are struggling with Salah renewal mostly on wages, they don't want to break their wage structure because it will mean more players asking for higher wages.

Signing someone like Mbappe would have meant something like 375-400K per week which Liverpool cant afford, so that was never going to happen.

Liverpool dont need to sign someone like Haaland to compete, they have slowly and steadily built up a great squad with well scouted buys that fit the style and have a good character to fit into the dressing room as well, they dont want overpaid divas that disrupt the team.

Liverpool have been competing just fine over the past 3-4 years, with last year being an outlier after losing all senior CBs which was obviously not something you would expect to happen, but not replacing Lovren early enough was a mistake but still overall I would say the model is working very well.

Ok thanks. Nice post and I consider myself educated. Wasnt thinking about the wages etc and the other points you have mentioned.

Its quite sad to think that there are neutrals out there who would prefer City to win over Liverpool when they have essentially bought their success unlike Liverpool.

Immense credit has to be given to Liverpool and Klopp for being able to compete with City over the last 4-5 seasons, winning the league, pushing them close in other seasons and bring more successful than them in the champions league on a much smaller budget.

As a neutral, I'd rather anyone won than Liverpool and hope Real Madrid stuff them in the final. Reason being that Liverpool's fans in general are absolutely insufferable when they get a touch of success and lack class and humility when they don't.

Because FPL flag for the next deadline, not anything else left in GW36. Now of course there's an argument to say that, until we see him on the pitch, he's also a doubt for GW37. But FPL prefer to go easy on the flags where they can. If Rodgers says he'll be out of the Norwich game in his presser tomorrow, you'll see a flag appear pretty soon. If he's only a doubt or "hopeful", the flag will appear only after the teamsheets are released on Wednesday and he's not on it. Believe me, I follow them closely...

Looks great. I'm also playing 451 I think. Everton's defending on Daka's goal, plus Mina injury, made me think twice about doubling up on their defence. But I like Cash & Digne have a good shot at the double CS, and Andersen is a strong possibility for me too. I'm a little wary on Mané if he starts at Villa, thinking Jota is a safe bet
