Gabriel injury latest as Son and Kane haul in north London derby

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal in our Scout Notes summary.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-improving website, and our own Premium Members Area.

SPURS REIGNITE TOP FOUR PUSH

Two goals from Harry Kane (£12.4m) and a red card to Arsenal’s Rob Holding (£4.1m) put Tottenham in firm control of the north London derby, before Son Heung-min (£11.0m) added a third early in the second-half.

Spurs have now won five of their last six home league games, scoring at least three goals in each of those victories, with Burnley up next in Sunday’s Gameweek 37 opener.

The Clarets, meanwhile, could potentially be missing both of their first-choice centre-halves: James Tarkowski (£4.9m) exited last weekend’s game against Aston Villa in the early stages of the second half after feeling tightness in his hamstring, while Ben Mee (£4.6m) is out with a leg injury.

As for Son, the South Korean is now just one goal behind Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) in the Golden Boot race. The Liverpool man looked like he was going to run away with the award a few months back, but Son has hit 10 goals in his last eight league games to close within one of the Egyptian.

He wasn’t able to draw level with Salah on Thursday, however, with Antonio Conte withdrawing the player after 72 minutes, much to his frustration.

“Obviously I want to play always but what can I say? I have to accept it. We have a game on Sunday so that’s why. I am not angry just disappointed. I have to move on. I wanted to keep playing. We have an important game so I need to be ready, recover well and be fresh again.” – Son Heung-min on his withdrawal after 72 minutes

“I know Son Heung-min wanted to continue to play but I had to think not only about this game but to have fresh players. They spent a lot of energy. I made the decision to give them a bit of rest. He promised me on Sunday he will go to try to score.” – Antonio Conte on Son Heung-min

Son’s goal and assist means that he has now produced five double-figure hauls in his last eight matches and trails Salah by just 16 points at the top of the FPL standings.

On the injury front, Cristiano Romero (£4.8m) missed out due to a hip injury, which Conte touched on before kick-off.

“In the game against Liverpool he received a hit on his hip. After the game he had pain and is not right to recover.” – Antonio Conte on Cristian Romero

DEFENSIVE ISSUES AT ARSENAL

Despite tonight’s damaging defeat, Arsenal remain in the driving seat for a top-four spot with a one-point lead.

Despite that, there’s no room for any slip-ups against Newcastle United and Everton and they are struggling defensively: they have now gone eight league matches without a clean sheet since the 1-0 win at Aston Villa in Gameweek 30.

That’s coincided with injuries to Thomas Partey (£5.0m), Kieran Tierney (£4.9m) and more recently Ben White (£4.6m), although the latter did make the bench tonight.

However, it gets worse for Mikel Arteta, as they lost key centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.4m) to injury against Spurs, while Holding will serve his one-match ban at St James’ Park following his red card.

As for Gabriel, the 24-year-old went down feeling his hamstring and limped off shortly after, although Arteta did sound fairly upbeat in his post-match interview.

Gabi [Gabriel] is not normally a player who asks to be get off the pitch. He felt something but hopefully it’s not much. It’s a muscular problem and we’ll have to assess it” – Mikel Arteta

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris, Sanchez, Dier, Davies (Rodon 82), Royal, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Sessegnon, Kulusevski (Moura 72), Son (Bergwijn 72), Kane

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Cedric, Holding, Gabriel (Tavares 76), Tomiyasu, Elneny, Xhaka, Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli (Smith Rowe 64), Nketiah (Lacazette 73)

Very risky move but I think I might go without Liverpool attack.
Mané, Diaz & Jota could be rotated.
Would rather have De Bruyne & Son if you can't have Salah.

It's too risky choosing a LIV player that isn't Salah. Plus, Salah could be rested vs Saints if he plays 120 mins against Chelsea

Thinking same here too, the Liv guys can be rested these next two games, and we have amazing alternatives in Son and KDB. I need to compete against the free hitters this week, so may go Son Kane Kulu triple uo for the next two weeks.

Real madrid will win the final, Liverpool much better at anfield and more fragile defensively away, even Tottenham beat them on xg in that 2019 final.

Just curious, why are there so many FH drafts out there with double Villa and Everton defence, but also Zaha?

Surely if we think Villa and Everton will do well then Palace will struggle to score?

You’re getting 8 home games against ho-hum competition and the defenders people are getting can all return offensively.

          Makes a lot of sense.

It makes sense if you are hedging your bets as to nailing one of two outcomes: Zaha hauls, or your defense hauls. While both aren’t likely given they face each other, you cover both outcomes.

It’s not that simple. We’re not dealing with absolutes. No-one has double Villa and double Everton defence because they think there’s absolutely no way they concede a goal this week. Likewise no-one has Zaha because they think he’s absolutely going to score. They’re playing to percentages.

I thought about this and the conclusion I came to is that the extra game is good for both Everton and Villa so it makes sense.

Brentford at home is the sort of game Everton will be up for and I can see them keeping a CS in. Villa vs Burnley is even more of a banker.

Zaha can score against both teams and our defenders could still get good scores from the second game not to mention attacking returns if you pick Cash/Digne. Also, if Zaha/Palace blank in one, our defenders benefit.

Ideal scenario if we go the popular Pickford, Cash, Digne, Zaha combo... Palace keep a cleanie vs CPL. Everton keep a cleanie vs Brentford. Zaha scores a brace vs Everton.

Could end up with like Pickford 8, Cash 12, Digne 12, Zaha 17.

I see that 'ideal' outcome as not being that farfetched and that assumes the Villa defenders don't get any attacking returns.

Captained Salah having gone weeks without him being the main problem. Brought in KDB and Nketiah for Kane and Kulu though which at least worked out very well despite Kane’s points tonight

      Horrendous disaster of a week.

Had been planning Kane + Kulu > KdB + Nketiah the whole time. Decided last minute to get cute and bet on Mahrez + Richarlison (money ITB for Mahrez > Son in GW38) with Salah (c).

70 (-4) for the week and to make it worse my biggest rival who I had a 54 point lead on scored 157 on FH to overtake me.

        And Jesus for Sterling!!

        Rough.

Along with Salah, Saka and Coutinho in the midfield.

Smooth canceled BB which was Mateta 1 and Williams - 1 along with White and Guaita. Hardly an upside.

Kane helped too and defense scored some points.

      Rough
Salah(c), no KDB, no chips, Matip first on bench & played Robbo (actually it was between Matip and Coutinho for bench duties, but who would've thunk Matip would get attacking returns before Robbo)

      Smooth
115pts and a 5% green arrow, thanks to Foster, Cancelo, Laporte, Son, Maddison, Nketiah & Kane

Smooth: My transfers were Sterling and Watkins for KdB (C) and Richarlison. Also BB returned 30 points to give me the best GW Rank so far this season of about 9k and propelled me from 39k to about 9k.

All sorts of horrors have unfolded since GW30 (my last captain return) but this week:

      - BB got me 29 playing players.
      - I only had 6 returning players across those 29.

      Dropped from 25k to 45k

Smooth: 130(-4) on BB got me a green arrow back into top 10k. Laporte, Cancelo, Son, Nketiah and Foster of all people all with good hauls.

Rough was my transfers. Havertz, Broja and VVD out (not too bad) but brought in Mahrez, Tavares and Richarlison instead. Mahrez and Tavares got about 20mins between them lol.

      Also rough was captaining Salah.

      Exciting GW. Roll on 37.

      ROUGH!:

No one rougher than me this week! In 16 FPL seasons the other night was the worst experience of playing the game I’ve ever had! I had removed KdB(c) for Salah(c) for a hit bringing in Richarlison alongside! It unfolded like this. I’d removed Salah for Bruno(c) over the double, then held him an extra week for the double double. Then Werner came in which left me 0.1 shy of getting Salah back. So got KdB in last week instead who didn’t even play! We all know Salah has been useless since Afcon and I’d talked myself into just going with Trent & Robbo until all the EO chatter on Salah captaincy started and at 12.30 on Saturday I got cold feet on the idea! Never made such a bad call. 53 points down and dropped from 290k to 400k!

Smooth: Considered selling Kane and Barnes to get Salah back which would’ve been equally painful! Kane, Barnes, Kasper, Gordon, Kulu, Davies & Richarlison all chipped in ok. 72(-4) all out.

      Smooth
Got in Foster Holgate Alonso and Nkeitah
      For
      Dubravka, Schar White and Weghorst
      For a minus 8.
      Gain of 36
      Rough.
Captained Salah and didn't own Kdb.

      Schmeichel 8, James 13, Matip 11, Cancelo 14, KDB(C) 60, Mané 9, Son 20, Martinelli 7, Kane 15.
162pts total, my highest score of the season, with no chip.
