FPL

Which FPL assets played the most minutes in 2021/22?

While the Premier League Christmas schedule looks more forgiving in 2022/23, the autumn calendar appears more congested.

Between Gameweeks 4 and 15, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur will play Premier League and/or Champions League football twice a week, every week, except during the September international break.

Premier League managers will also be allowed to make five substitutions per game, two more than what we are used to seeing, which provides an added challenge for Fantasy bosses.

So, with rest and rotation perhaps biting harder and earlier in 2022/23, here we take a look at which players played the most minutes last season.

For only the third Premier League season ever, no outfield player managed to play every single minute of the 2021/22 campaign.

However, some came very close, as detailed below.

NameTeamMinutes
Matty CashAston Villa3378
Conor CoadyWolverhampton Wanderers3362
Pontus JanssonBrentford3321

Joao CanceloManchester City3227
Marc GuehiCrystal Palace3223
Moussa SissokoWatford3221
James Ward-ProwseSouthampton3215
Pierre-Emile HojbjergTottenham Hotspur3196

Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash only missed 42 minutes of Premier League action all season, while Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Conor Coady was just 58 minutes short.

In addition, the duo were the only outfield players to start all 38 Premier League matches.

Meanwhile, the ability of the big clubs to rotate their star-studded squads meant that only four players from the traditional ‘big six’ feature on the above lists – Harry Kane, Joao Cancelo, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Bukayo Saka – as they each racked up an impressive 36 Premier League starts.

A club-by-club breakdown is below, with the top few performers in each category included.

Liverpool and City both. My intension is to have 6 keepers, and focus on transfers for the rest of the squad.

6 is a bit excessive. You can normally get by with a cheap playing keeper and his backup as the bench option

      Depends greatly on price.

In the 6.5m range - Martinelli, Trossard, Wilson, Hwang something like that. We'll see.

Actually considering going against my norm and opting for VVD this year over TAA. Then opting for more nailed full backs for the other options I.e. cash and Cancelo

Maybe not the best choice of terminology, more the 5 subs coming into play, much more likely to effect TAA then VVD. If you look at last season there finished circa 20 points apart. Say the subs effect him by just 10 points, that makes it only a 10 point difference but costing a million

I think you'll likely be in the minority there, but if you can make the extra million count elsewhere then you could be on to a winner

I have VVD and TAA. It's Robbo who's more likely to suffer short minutes with Tsimikas a decent sub. I'm keeping TAA as I have an idea his crosses will be heaven for Nunez.
Cucurella - Pep usually takes his time inculcating new players on the training ground - I don't think Cancelo will lose time before the world cup pause.

I did a similar 'no transfer' draft to this:

        Sanchez (Steele)
        TAA/Robbo/VVD/Cancelo/Dias
        Saka/Raph/Odegaard/Kulu (DLuiz)
        (H)aaland (Gelhardt/Davis)

Will check back in to see how they're getting on when we break for the World Cup!

Nice team, but you come up 8mio short if the predicted prices are correct!

Is it possible to find the history of mini leagues? I know that it is possible to easily view the history of current mini leagues participants individual history, but through the years different people have paticipated and most of the info just forgotten. For example is it possible to find out in what leagues I played in 2013/14 and the tables of those leagues?

      Salah | Son | Eriksen | Bruno G
      Haaland | Solanke

      4.0 | Gelhardt | 4.5 mid | 4.0 def

How about the 8m midfield price point? Will be so many good options there this season I can see myself wanting: Bowen, Saka, Mount, Maddison, Kulu etc. If you already have that price point in your team they are much easier to get to. Just really not sure having the 3 premiums is worth it if you then have to include options like Solanke, Eriksen. Bruno G etc.

        4,5
        7,5 - 7 - 5 - 4,5
        13 - 12 - 6 - 6
        12 - 6
        4 - 4,5 - 4,5 - 4

100,5 I get with my math... So not possible?

Eriksen still unknown where he's going tho. And Solanke is Solanke. Unlikely he pulls a Bamford and scores heavily because Scott Parker is not gung ho attack attack like Bielsa and besides Bournemouth has horrible fixtures to start with. Doherty also risky considering Spurs are looking for a new RWB. U also said the other day u don't want Raya because of second season syndrome so why have Henry.

Good prices all round, my only gripe would be that strikers effectively start at 7.0 so you’re virtually forced into 3 up top, maybe 433 is optimal for FT this year?

Yep it's looking that way. Maybe one or two 4.0m defenders emerge to make that an even easier option.

A few 4.5 goalkeepers there seem decent options, Dubravka, Martinez...

Well done West Ham, but can't see why Everton or Villa fans would be paying up other than out of passion and loyalty.

Along with TV subscriptions and advertising it's the fans who pay a large chunk of the ridiculous wages players take and commissions agents rake.

Posted this to a comment on a different article earlier:

I think Bruno is going to have to alter his game quite a lot to settle into a position under ETH. I know he excels in transition with speculative passes/runs but naturally with that style, while he can create a lot of chances, he also gives the ball away a lot of times every game. ETH will want to focus on possession and building up attacks from deep with large numbers of players in attack. The rest of the team spending each game attempting to do that while Bruno blasts the ball back to the opposition leaving the team extremely vulnerable to counter-attacks just isn't going to work.

Saw today that now both Chelsea and Spurs are enquiring.
He wants Barca, they want him, but they also want Bernardo Silva who'd cost even more (and then there's Lewandowski with his wages). I reckon he could well stay in the Prem, but which London side? I don't think Chelsea would get both him and Sterling when they need defenders too. Will Spurs make a strong effort now they're not trying for Eriksen? Intriguing one, this.

          4.5
          TAA/Cancelo/5/4.5/4.5
          Salah/Son/6.5/6
          Haaland

          (4.0/4.5/4.5/4.5)

Even if we don't know yet who will be this season's Dennis/Broja/Nketiah do you think £5.5M will be enough for the first benched forward in a 451/541 formation?

Not saying I know what the [right] answer is, but you have to consider that Son will be a captaincy option about 75% of the time, while the 8m mids will be flyers at best for C on any given week

        Raya
        TAA - Cancelo - Tomiyasu
        Salah - Saka - Gray - Wissa

I think premium defenders you don't have from Liverpool and City will outscore Jimenez and Watkins, and equivalently-priced defenders will outscore Wissa and Gray.

I do also agree with Andy though.
If we assume Raga's prices are 'close as', then what we are faced with is a relative embarrassment of riches with our premium defenders.
I've drafted a bunch of squads in the last week or so, and I keep getting drawn back to 5 at the back. There's so much value back there.

It's not the 'fun' way of playing the game though is it!

I am drawn to a 5-4-1 as well. Either that or 4-5-1 will be my starring formation. Don't want anyone but Haaland in attack.

                    Exactly the same.
Watkins & Jesus have come in and out of my thinking, but then when compare against TAA, Robbo, VVD, Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, James, Chilwell, ‘the right Spurs wingback’ - they just don’t come close!

I've tweaked again today and gone for a very weird front 3. Haaland and 2 benchies of course, but they're now Gelhardt and Greenwood, i.e. a pair of Leeds kids. My thinking is Bamford will be carefully handled after his injuries so we can expect to see him subbed off regularly, but for whom? If I have both, there's a decent chance on stays safely on the bench and the other gets a cameo. I'm assuming 10m max will get me both here.

                        I like your logic.
Gelhardt is my pick of the 4.5s, and I’m just kind of hoping that another presents themselves in pre-season, or worst case GW1, and then that’ll be my first transfer.

I’m seriously considering setting up an XI that requires very little maintenance (then just look the other way in GW11 when my 5 City/Liverpool defenders tear chunks out of each other!)

Also, I’d be amazed if they come in at anything above 9.5 - and they really shouldn’t be above 9. But let’s see what FPL Towers is cooking up for us!

My punt is Gelhardt 5.0, Greenwood 4.5 - but they might be 0.5m more.
What I've currently set up is a back 7 (2 keepers and 5 defenders) as a set-and-forget, plus Haaland. That leaves my midfield to focus on for chopping and changing. It's the kind of bullet-proof plan that lasts until halfway through the first Saturday.

I think it's fun. Even though mathematically, premium defenders might make the most sense, many if not most FPLers will be stuck in their rigid old-think about three at the back.
Raga's prices don't have to be spot-on; I think the bigger picture is incontrovertible and was demonstrated last season - there is more value in defence than up top. Even if we accept that there will be more than one high-scoring premium striker this year, the premium defenders will still outscore their equivalent-priced mids and forwards.

It still leaves big decisions re. the big hitters though. Is it worth having 2 of Haaland/Nunez/Kane/Son/Jesus up top? If so, need to cut back on defence. What if KDB in midfield goes big? (and/or Son if he's still a mid). If you have Salah and Haaland, again you need to compromise on defence.

It's by no means cut-and-dried. Still fun!

If I could, I would play a 6-4-0 or 5-5-0 formation, with 100% wing backs and wingers. Those positions all play on the front line in today's game

Ah, but those players will also be the first to be subbed off with the 5-sub rule. I'm leaning towards the premium defenders who will play 38 games for 90mins, or as near as dammit. That means your VVDS, Dias/Laportes and outlier wingback, Matty Cash. He doesn't have the explosiveness of a Chelsea or Spurs wingback, but he won't be rotated. TAA and Cancelo also play big minutes.

My current thinking is a mix of ‘exciting wingback’ for the explosive nature, and nailed on 90 (or at the very least 60+) min CB.

FWIW; I’m not sure how much of a difference 5-subs will make.
We’ve seen Pep go whole games without making a single change. And there’s the element of ‘not wanting to unsettle’ a defence if a game is tight or in the balance.

Not a palace fan but that seems like what happened, in fact initially it was edouard fighting it out with benteke and the assumption was once edouard is settled he'd take over and get a good run but he was hit and miss, so they tried mateta and he did better than them both! They spent money on edouard so they won't just give up on him but don't be surprised if Mateta gets good minutes I think the cost of mateta was like 9 million and edouard was 14 million so not too much between them

That goal v Arsenal in the semi, though.

Any reason why there are so many Wolves defenders in people's drafts?

No CS in their last 9 games of the previous season which included games against Norwich, Burnley and Leeds.

Their early-season form wasn't much better either.

Price, mostly. Ragabolly has defenders at 4.5 and they have nice opening fixtures. I suspect few will be left in final drafts.

Yes the fixtures are kind, agreed.

Not sure I'd go near Ait-Nouri, especially with the 5 sub rule. I can see him getting taken off early, especially in games they're chasing. He was far from nailed last season too.

Coady will be 5.0m I expect. Not sure about Kilman price.

Good fixtures but I agree and am not convinced at all. They vastly outperformed their xGc in that good run (a lot of that thanks to Sa) but the second-half of the season was closer to what was expected. I think Lage did a good job with them but they need a fair few signings, not least a CM to replace Moutinho (and another if Neves leaves) and a striker unless Silva can get his shooting boots on. Although I actually was impressed by his general play when I saw him, but they need someone to score goals.

If they can start scoring, Neto and Podence could be good picks. I do expect Coady to be 5m. Kilman could be 4.5m - I put him in one draft but soon took him out again. I was looking at a rotation with a 4.5 Brentford defender but decided against it.

Neto is someone I'm keeping my eye on depending on how they look in preseason, only thing is I feel like he can be a bit streaky at times so it will be hard to justify a spot for him

For the wolves defence I'm monitoring CB Mosquera. He looked good last pre season, by was injured all of last. He'll be 4.5 and think he could be the one to replace Saiss

Manchester United hope to persuade Christian Eriksen to join them.

Eriksen / De Jong / Fernandes looks a seriously unbalanced midfield on paper. Can’t see how they’ll make that work.

Don’t understand why United aren’t after that solid CDM they’ve needed for years. Bissouma would have been ideal.

Yes, I'll probably go for Eriksen at Brentford, but not United.

Exactly. A surfeit of fancy-dan creatives, but still not the one they need!
